Saturday Night Live has played host to some controversial music moments — Sinead O’Connor tearing up a picture of the pope, Elvis Costello’s rogue “Radio Radio” outburst, a legendarily destructive set by Fear — but only one still gets awkward laughs: that of Ashlee Simpson, whose 2004 SNL appearance found her stopping during her song and doing a jig that she described in the closing monologue as an impromptu hoedown after her band played the wrong number.
In a recently unearthed interview with Lorne Michaels from that same year, the SNL head remembered the complete shock — and nothingness — that was on stage that night from Ashlee Simpson. “I was in the control room going, well, I mean there’s just egg out there now. I mean there was nothing to watch.”
Michaels would add that Ashlee Simpson’s immediately infamous SNL appearance left him in a rare position: he had no control.

7th Heaven stars Beverley Mitchell, David Gallagher and Mackenzie Rosman — best known for their roles as Lucy, Simon and Ruthie Camden on the WB drama — are acknowledging the series’ tarnished legacy as it relates to TV dad Stephen Collins, who in 2014 admitted to inappropriate conduct with three minors between 1973 and 1994.
Nearly three months after the launch of the “Catching Up With the Camdens” podcast, the trio are about to embark on a rewatch of the 11-season drama, and they begin their most recent episode by addressing the elephant in the room.

Unearthed audio from the week of October 23, 2004 at Saturday Night Live was just released, and if you’re wondering why that week is significant…it’s when Ashlee Simpson performed.
While live on TV that Saturday night in 2004, Ashlee was found to be lip-syncing during her performance as musical guest.
Well, it just so happened that during that week on the show, 60 Minutes was doing interviews with the cast and crew, and they got SNL creator Lorne Michael‘s real-time reaction to what went down.
Keep reading to find out more…
The unearthed audio was released in the new episode of the “60 Minutes: A Second Look” podcast.
“Oh, I think accidents happen. I think that’s the nature of live television,” Lorne said at the time in reaction to the now-infamous incident,
60 Minutes journalist Lesley Stahl then said it’s his job to make sure that these kinds of accidents don’t happen.

As Saturday Night Live readies its 50th season, which launches Sept. 28, 60 Minutes is releasing never-heard-before audio from a 20-year-old interview with its famously private maestro Lorne Michaels and his talent from the period.
Running as part of the news magazine’s newly launched podcast series, 60 Minutes: A Second Look, the episode weaves together interviews that Lesley Stahl conducted in 2004, when the show was granted full access to a week at SNL — one that happened to coincide with the Ashlee Simpson lip-syncing fiasco — but only aired some three minutes of the interviews. Left on the cutting room floor was material from Michaels, who recently spoke to THR at length for a cover story, as well as former SNL writer Conan O’Brien and then cast members likes Seth Meyers, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Darrell Hammond.

He might voice a cop in the latest Disney-Pixar movie, but Flea is still a rebel at heart.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers rocker appeared to forget where he was for a moment as he posed with both middle fingers in the air on the purple carpet of Monday’s Inside Out 2 world premiere in Los Angeles.
It all appeared to be in good fun as he also busted out some dance moves for the cameras. Deadline has reached out to Flea’s reps for comment.
Despite the unexpected rockstar vibes, the event at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre drew plenty of families, including Ashlee Simpson, husband Evan Ross, and their brood.
Flea reprises his voice role as Mind Cop Worker Jake from the original 2015 film, which takes place inside a young girl’s mind, following the personifications of her changing emotions.

A revival of ’90s hit “Melrose Place” is in the works at CBS Studios, with original stars Heather Locklear, Daphne Zuniga and Laura Leighton set to return, TheWrap has learned.
The Darren Star-created night-time soap followed the complicated lives of several 20-somethings who lived in a Los Angeles apartment complex called Melrose Place, where the drama included a bombing, a drowning and a “Dynasty”-esque pool fight.
Locklear played advertising exec Amanda Woodward, whose addition to the show late in the first season helped boost ratings at the time. Zuniga played Jo Reynolds on the series from 1992 to 1999 while Leighton played Sydney Andrews, sister of Josie Bassett’s character Jane.
Lauren Gussis of “Dexter” and “Insatiable” fame is set to write and executive produce the revival, which would see the “Og residents” returning when one of their friends die. Per the logline, the reunion “uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances,...

When you think of Ashlee Simpson, there’s probably only one image that comes to mind: her lip-syncing snafu on SNL, in which she went to perform her second song of the night, only for the playback to trigger her first song, “Pieces of Me”. She had been caught going full Milli Vanilli. And to get herself out of the situation, Simpson basically la-la’d her way off stage while doing a jig, leaving her band behind to “play”. Twenty years after the incident, Simpson is remembering the moment as a life lesson. But this may not be the case for others who also made some serious bonehead moves on SNL…
It’s extremely rare for musical guests on SNL to go through gaffes of Ashlee Simpson’s magnitude: musicians like Elvis Costello would instead raise intentional hell by playing whatever song he wanted, while Sinead O’Connor used her moment to send a message.

Diana Ross is one of the industry greats, with an illustrious music and film career that spans six decades. To most of the world, she's an icon. But to her big, growing family, she's a loving mom and devoted grandmother who loses her fanny pack at Marshall's like anyone else.
We got a glimpse of Diana's huge brood at the American Music Awards in 2017, where three generations stepped out to support her lifetime achievement award, and again at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade a year later. In the years since, her kids have given many shout-outs in honor of their mom. Some of them have joined her on stage, while others have paid tribute in interviews and shown up to support her when she shared the stage with Beyoncé at the "Renaissance" tour in September.
All these outings have fueled interest in Diana's family life, and you might be...

Ashlee Simpson is still very much in touch with her teenage self. During an interview at Jbl Fest in Las Vegas, Simpson - who broke out in 2004 with the rock-edged "Autobiography" - happily confirms she's never stopped resonating with the bands that she loved back in the day.
"I still listen to Hole. I still listen to Garbage, Nirvana, the whole thing," she tells Popsugar. Of course, those bands never really lost their relevance, and like many other '90s trends, they're definitely having another moment in the sun. "It's so funny that it's even made another resurgence - it's one of those things where music cycles all around," she notes.
She can also definitely still relate to the emotions that animate that music. "For me, yes, I still resonate. I'm still a teen angsty mom," she says. "I'm like yes, Jagger, we're going to jump around and dance."

Jbl Fest came to Las Vegas for the first time this year, partnering with the music festival Life Is Beautiful to bring a blend of sound, festivity, and surprise to the strip. It was only my second time in Las Vegas and my first time at a music festival in many years, so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. But performances by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Killers, late-night appearances from Bruno Mars, and plenty of quirky touches created a nostalgia-fueled trip that simultaneously brought me back to the past and anchored me fully in the whirlwind present.
The festival was based at the Park MGM, a proudly eco-friendly hotel that charmed me from the get-go. After grabbing some snacks (and a complementary pair of bluetooth headphones) at Jbl's hospitality lounge, I spent the first afternoon of the two-day festival wandering around the spacious pool area and...

The turn of the new millennium marked a realignment in both global politics and pop culture. September 11th and the seemingly endless wars that followed obliterated the illusion of relative peace and prosperity that, in the late 20th century, lulled much of the Western world into a sense of complacency. The Chicks were blacklisted for speaking out against George W. Bush’s military adventures. And the music industry was on the brink of collapse, rocked by the rise of Napster and the ensuing digital revolution.
Amid all of it, the teen-pop bubble of the late 1990s finally popped. By 2003, artists like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake endeavored, with varying degrees of success, to break out of the Mouseketeer mold, while ostensibly edgier, more reputable young artists such as Avril Lavigne were packaged and sold as teen-pop with a Hot Topic twist. Lavigne’s success in particular had an audible influence,...

The snake-haired villainess performed a pitch-perfect rendition of “Happier Than Ever” during the season premiere and left the judges “speechless.” She returned in Episode 2 with “Dancing Queen” and won the crown yet again. Medusa then performed “New York, New York” in Episode 3, but lost the vote to California Roll, however she was saved by the “Ding Dong Keep It On” Bell and won the comeback competition. She then advanced from the quarter-finals and the semi-finals, which means she will appear in the season finale. Do You know who she is? Read on for the judges’ “The Masked Singer” Medusa guesses.

With a trace of terror in his eyes, Patrick Stump is reliving the ultimate punk rock dilemma. If your bandmate looks like he may have just died onstage, do you keep playing? “His head hit this thing hard, and he was out,” the Fall Out Boy singer says, recalling an early club gig during which bassist and lyricist Pete Wentz took a bad fall. “I was like ‘Is he actually dead, or is he gonna wake up and be p***ed off that we’ve stopped the song?’”
Wentz – provably alive and sporting a flowing dyed-blonde mane where he’d once modelled emo’s most swooned-over fin – laughs along, recalling other show misadventures. There was the night that the stage collapsed beneath them at Chicago’s Knights Of Columbus club. The time three people showed up to watch them play a pizza parlour. Or the riots that kicked off at...

For a live television show that is assembled on the fly over a six-day period, "Saturday Night Live" has suffered remarkably few on-air disasters. The f-bomb has been uttered more than a few times, Jimmy Fallon used to co-host the Weekend Update, and there was the whole Ashlee Simpson lip synching snafu. But SNL, overall, goes on as it must.

Pete Wentz is reflecting on a big time of change. In the latest edition of Nylon, the 43-year-old Fall Out Boy bassist looks back on his band taking a hiatus after “One Direction-level” of success, and his marriage to Ashlee Simpson ending, which happened at the same time.
“My life was just like… a bomb had gone off in it,” the “Dance, Dance” singer tells the magazine. “You’ve atrophied all of these life skills. I was like, ‘Oh. You have to figure out how to be happy as an adult.'”
Wentz and Simpson were together from 2008-2011, and they share a son, 14-year-old Bronx.
Since their split, Simpson has gone on to marry Evan Ross, and the couple are parents to Jagger, 7, and Ziggy, 2.
Wentz has also moved on. The musician has been with his longtime partner, Megan Camper, since 2011. Together, they share Marvel, 4, and Saint, 8.

Michael Jackson was scheduled to perform at the O2 Arena in 2009, although the event was later canceled. When Miley Cyrus headlined the same venue, she was sure to mention the “Thriller” singer in her own original song. Here’s what we know about this performance — and Cyrus’ thoughts on Jackson.

Cyrus has some impressive performances under her belt, recently hosting a New Year’s Eve Special with Dolly Parton and earning a Grammy nomination in the Best Pop Vocal Album category for Bangerz. In 2009, the singer headlined a concert at the O2 Arena in London.
This concert included songs from Cyrus’ Hannah Montana fame, like “The Climb,” “Spotlight,” and “Let’s Get Crazy.” There were some references to other artists in Cyrus’ setlist.

Snowstorm came out strong as a blizzard on the show, singing Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next.” The singer made her debut on “Comedy Roast Night” and got in some pretty good digs at host Nick Cannon, and how many kids he’s had.
