Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat breaks down why he feels the modern era of the sci-fi series has seen many of its companions face tragic but definitive endings. The writer first joined production on the television series with season 1 of the revival, and would take over from initial showrunner Russell T Davies in helming the show in 2010 until 2017. Moffat returned to writing for Doctor Who upon Davies returning to the role of showrunner, penning "Boom" for Doctor Who season 14 and the 2024 Christmas special "Joy to the World".
With another Moffat-penned Doctor Who adventure concluding with a bittersweet self-sacrifice from Nicola Coughlan's Joy, RadioTimes reports that the writer explained why so many companions face a tragic fate in the series. According to Moffat, he and Davies felt that they should offer a definitive reason to explain why anyone would decide to leave the Tardis:

Doctor Who's 2024 Christmas Special included a reference to a former companion, and highlights just how underused she was during her time on the show. Doctor Who may have started back in 1963, but the modern version of the show has only been on the air since 2005. In that time, the show has seen six different actors play the role of the Doctor manning the Tardis, with several companions joining them for adventures through time and space.
While many of these companions left lasting impressions on the Doctor, and became like family to him during their travels, some companions became much more. For Rose Tyler, she became one of the only companions to genuinely form a romantic connection with the Doctor, for Donna Noble, she became the Doctor's best friend, and for others like Amy Pond and Rory Williams, they became literal family. But not every companion got such a fond send-off or warm welcome.

Doctor Who's "Joy to the World" belongs to a specific group of Christmas specials for an unfortunate reason, but the festive installment in 2025 can easily break away from the predictable trend. All the Doctor Who Christmas specials (and New Year specials under Chris Chibnall's reign) hold an interesting place in the show's timeline. Because they're one-off installments, they need to include high-paced action while also maintaining the spirit of the holidays. However, there's often a behind-the-scenes hurdle that needs to be overcome at the same time.
Although Doctor Who's classic era rarely acknowledged Christmas, the festival specials have been a big hallmark of the show since its 2005 revival. Doctor Who's modern era has taken the Doctor through several holiday tropes to varying degrees of success, but the person by his side can often be an unfamiliar face. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it does...

Warning: spoilers ahead for Doctor Who's "Joy to the World."
Ruby Sunday's brief return to Doctor Who gives an idea of what the future has in store for Millie Gibson's character. Debuting in 2023's Christmas special, "The Church on Ruby Road," Ruby Sunday served as the sole companion opposite Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor throughout Doctor Who season 14. Given how much mystery was woven around the identity of Ruby Sunday's mother, Doctor Who looked deeply invested in its new companion, but surprise reports later claimed Gibson would be replaced by Varada Sethu for Doctor Who season 15.
Sure enough, Doctor Who season 14 ended with Ruby exiting the Tardis after reuniting with her long-lost mother. 2024's Christmas special, "Joy to the World," finds the Fifteenth Doctor operating alone, solemnly preoccupied with thoughts of Ruby - making two drinks instead of one, staring longingly at the telephone, etc. - throughout the episode.

Austin Butler has been actively working in front of the camera since 2005, but his breakout role did not come until 2022. The early days of his acting career happened while he was still a teenager and he did a lot of background work in school scenes for Nickelodeon programming originally before becoming a staple in children’s sitcoms like Zoey 101, iCarly, Hannah Montana, and Wizards of Waverly Place. Getting to work on some of the most popular children’s programs of all time helped to build a foundation for the skills he continues to use as an adult.
Butler’s breakout role, despite his steady stream of work (including a 2018 Broadway debut) for nearly 20 years, happened in 2022’s Elvis. That is likely the role he will be known for in years to come other than a certain generation that will recognize him from family movies like Aliens in the Attic or...

Martha Jones is one of Doctor Who’s most polarizing companions, but one change could have made all of the difference. Introduced during the Tenth Doctor’s tenure, Martha's intelligence, bravery, and resourcefulness were on full display throughout her time in the Tardis. She was a medical student who brought a fresh perspective and a strong moral compass to the Doctor’s adventures.
However, despite all her incredible qualities and Freema Agyeman's many talents, Martha never quite gained the recognition that Doctor Who companions like Rose Tyler or Donna Noble did. There’s one primary reason why — and fixing it might have cemented Martha Jones as one of Doctor Who’s all-time greats.

Some of the highest-rated TV episodes from a show chronicle stories that de-center the main character. Sometimes, these narratives are bottle episodes, but they don't necessarily have to fall into this format for them to focus on secondary characters. Some TV show's bottle episodes are pointless, and these detract from the overall quality of the series. However, spending time away from the protagonists and getting to know other characters can help the worldbuilding of the show and make the audience more invested in the overarching plot. Additionally, these episodes can save money and time for showrunners and producers.
There are creative ways to work around the main character's arc, and these storylines demonstrate how creative the writers of a TV series are.

For now at least, we’re celebrating only the Nu-Who main companions who had their own proper stint travelling in the Tardis, or any of the many wonderful actors who preceded them in the classic era.

Martha Jones' return to an upcoming Doctor Who spinoff show is unlikely due to casting choices announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. Martha's character, underrated as a companion, may not make a comeback due to one specific reason. There may be canonical issues if Martha and a new character interact in The War Between the Land and Sea.
Doctor Who has officially announced its upcoming spinoff show at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, and while I'm excited for The War Between the Land and Sea, one casting choice essentially eliminates the possible return of a companion I've wanted to make a comeback for quite some time. Russell T Davies expands the Whoniverse with a long-awaited spin-off focusing on the Sea Devils at San Diego Comic-Con. The series reunites familiar faces like Kate Stewart and introduces new characters played by Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. The Sea Devil's emergence triggers an international crisis that involves Unit in The War Between The Land and The Sea.
Terrifying old foes and familiar faces collide, as the first spin-off of Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who era is confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con with The War Between The Land And The Sea. Gatwa took on the role of the Time Lord following David Tennant's brief return for 2023's 60th-anniversary specials. Despite representing a whole new era of the show, returning showrunner Russell T Davies has long wanted to see the Whoniverse grow, revisiting familiar companions on their own journeys and taking advantage of the full scope of the universe.

Doctor Who Season 15 should avoid big canon changes like the Timeless Child and focus on characters. Season 15 needs the Doctor to play a prominent role in most episodes for better engagement. The upcoming season should resolve mysteries from Season 14 and bring back classic villains for continuity.
Doctor Who Season 14 had some highs and lows, but unfortunately, the latest revival of the show by Russell T Davies had a few too many flaws to easily overlook, which need to be corrected in season 15. The show has a long histroy on TV, dating back to 1963, which actually makes Doctor Who the longest running sci-fi show of all time. However, Doctor Who has always had to adapt and change over time to connect to new audiences and remain contemporary.
In 2005, the show had its biggest revival to date, after a long hiatus of over a decade, with only a TV movie released in that considerable gap.

It follows the doctors at New Amsterdam Hospital, a fictional hospital inspired by Bellevue Hospital in New York City, New York, with Dr. Max Goodwin, played by Ryan Eggold in the New Amsterdam cast, as the show's main character.
New Amsterdam is available to stream on Netflix or Peacock.

The sci-fi genre has always been one of the most beloved among cinephiles as it gives us a new look at a particular technology or our world. There was a time when Max (formerly known as HBO Max) was the place for peak sci-fi shows but after taking off Westworld and Raised by Wolves from the service, and since then it has been lacking a bit regarding sci-fi shows. But still, we picked the seven best sci-fi shows that we could find on Max.

There’s been a lot of heat around London’s new Romeo & Juliet, understandably so given its pairing of director Jamie Lloyd (Betrayal, A Doll’s House), known for his radical remodeling of classics, usually around A-list actors, with young global superstar Tom Holland. The latter is returning to the stage for the first time since Billy Elliot: The Musical at the very start of his career, his name causing tickets to sell out in just two hours.
It’s ironic, then, that one thing this production itself lacks is heat — romantic, dramatic, tragic heat. There is much to commend, but it suffers from a single, strategic mistake on the director’s part, to mute the action, quite literally, since much of it is played in whispers and mumbles; even miked, at times the actors are barely audible. The result is that this tale of violent family rivalry and courageous...

Not sure that I would equate Tom Holland and Zendaya with the same level of triple-a star firepower as Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, but the last time I witnessed sheer frenzied pandemonium outside the Duke of York’s Theatre was when Taylor went to see Burton read excerpts from Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood in February 1982.
It was bonkers, with onlookers five deep on both sides of the street waiting for a glimpse of the superstar much-married Hollywood lovers.
Four decades on, I found myself at the same theatre that has stood on the site in St. Martin’s Lane since 1892.
This time it was the occasion of the official opening night for Jamie Lloyd’s stark, modern-dress production of Shakespeare’s The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo & Juliet, to give its full title, starring Holland and Francesca Amewudah-Rivers as the tragic star-crossed lovers.

Back in 2012, Doctor Who fans freaked out. We’d been told in advance that Clara (Jenna Coleman) would eventually replace Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) as the next companion of the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) in series 7 of the show. But fans weren’t prepared for just how soon Coleman would make her Doctor Who debut. Although she wouldn’t officially join Matt Smith in the Tardis until a few episodes later, Coleman first appeared in the series 7 premiere “Asylum of the Daleks” as a seemingly different character named Oswin, who, although she met a tragic end, encouraged the Doctor to remember her.
And now, 12 years later, it looks like Who history is repeating itself. In the absolutely wonderful Steven Moffat-penned episode, “Boom,” the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) encounters a host of new allies, including a marine named Mundy. For fans of Star Wars: Andor,...

Warning: spoilers ahead for Doctor Who season 14, episode 3, "Boom."
Doctor Who season 15 will feature a new companion played by Varada Sethu, who debuts in season 14's "Boom." The visual similarities between Sethu's characters in different seasons cannot be ignored by the show. Past seasons of Doctor Who provided canon explanations for recast actors, setting a precedent to do the same with Sethu.
Doctor Who season 15 faces a dilemma as a new companion is set to join the Doctor and Ruby as a permanent member of the Tardis. It's Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson leading the Doctor Who cast in season 14, but the dynamic duo will become a tenacious trio soon enough. Despite widespread reports that Gibson would not continue as a full-time companion, an official announcement later confirmed Doctor Who season 15 will partner the Doctor and Ruby with an as-yet-unnamed companion played by Andor actor Varada Sethu.

A new chapter in Doctor Who canon history began with the first full episode of the Fifteenth Doctor’s adventures “The Church on Ruby Road.” Series 14 opener “Space Babies” takes the Doctor and Ruby’s travels to the distant future. The adventures that follow will also feature trips to the Swinging ’60s, to the Regency Era, and to faraway planets.
While there will be moments of dancing, sightseeing, and meeting new people and beings, there will also be moments of danger. Whether from villains upset that their plans for domination are being challenged, or from extremes in the environment, there are plenty of things to trigger the Doctor and Ruby Sunday’s fight-or-flight instinct.
Den of Geek interviewed Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson about their character traits, what the Doctor and companion Ruby are most afraid of this season, and the importance of opening the Tardis door to everyone.

It has been known for a while that the new West End production of William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, will be returning to the Duke of York’s Theatre from May 11 through August 3, with Jamie Lloyd directing. But, more importantly for some fans, it has been confirmed that Spider-Man star Tom Holland will be playing Romeo in the play, with Bad Education star Francesca Amewudah-Rivers co-starring as Juliet. And while all of this seems fine and dandy to us, some people are dissatisfied with the fact that Juliet will be played by a black actress and have taken to the Internet to express their anger in the most deplorable way.
The young actress has, thus, been the target of significant racial slander and abuse recently, which is an act that has to be condemned immediately. The producers, as well as some of Rivers’ colleagues, were quick to react,...

Freema Agyeman was the first Black companion on Doctor Who, playing Martha Jones who went on to work for Unit and Torchwood. Agyeman's success as Martha came after impressing producers and demonstrating her versatility and skills through auditions. Agyeman is one of the few actors in Doctor Who's history to play multiple characters, with Martha being a significant role.
Freema Agyeman played Martha Jones, the first Black companion in the history of Doctor Who. Martha was the second companion to join the Doctor after the 2005 reboot. She had big shoes to fill, as she was replacing Billie Piper's popular Rose Tyler. Her interest in medical science made her a natural fit for both the Doctor and Captain Jack Harkness, which led to her working first for Unit and then for Torchwood after she left Doctor Who. Her presence at Unit offered the new series the opportunity to explain Unit's history with the Doctor.

The New Amsterdam universe could expand; this time, a familiar face will be at the wheel.
Deadline reports that a sequel series has entered development at NBC, a year after the original series wrapped its five-season run.
The project would center on Dr. Max Goodwin’s (Ryan Eggold) daughter, Luna Goodwin.
At the time of the series finale in January 2023, there were no plans to keep the franchise alive. Still, the episode did introduce a tag for a sequel in the form of an adult Luna (Molly Griggs) taking over her father’s role as Medical Director of New Amsterdam Hospital.
Now, it seems NBC is interested in making New Amsterdam: Tomorrow a reality. The key difference from the original is that it would be set in the future.

Ncuti Gatwa subtly responds to reports of Millie Gibson leaving Doctor Who with a heartwarming Instagram post. Millie Gibson's departure from the show after season 14 has been reported, with Varada Sethu set to replace her. Gibson's exit is not uncommon for Doctor Who companions, suggesting it may have been planned as a shorter story arc.
Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa breaks his silence over reports that his co-star Millie Gibson is leaving the show. Gatwa made his debut in the 60th-anniversary special as the Fifteenth Doctor, while Gibson appeared in the 2023 Christmas special as Ruby Sunday. The latter episode set up Ruby to become the Fifteenth Doctor's first companion. She will be his main companion in season 14, which has already finished filming. It was believed the pair were filming season 15 together beginning in October 2023, making the news that Gibson was being written out of the series quite surprising.

Warning: contains Spoilers for Doctor Who episode “The Star Beast” and several modern Doctor Who episodes
The internet is still whirring after that explosive first episode of the three Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials, with the return of David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor and his beloved ex-companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate).
There was certainly a lot to take in: “The Star Beast” saw an alien spaceship crash-landing in London, the arrival of the adorably fluffy Meep and sinister, bug-eyed Wrarth Warriors, the return of Unit (the international intelligence taskforce that investigates alien activity), and the very real threat that if Donna remembers who The Doctor is, she’ll die.
We also met Donna’s family, including her husband Shaun and daughter Rose, whom we eventually learn has genetically absorbed some of the metacrisis that threatened Donna’s life, subconsciously giving her some of The Doctor and Donna’s memories.

Doctor Who's 60th-anniversary specials offer the perfect opportunity to bring back beloved characters and ignite nostalgia for fans of the show. The return of iconic duos like Rose Tyler and the Meta-Crisis Doctor, Martha Jones and Mickey Smith, and Susan Foreman and David Campbell would be thrilling to see. The potential reunions of characters like River Song and Jack Harkness, Amy Pond and Rory Williams, and Clara Oswald and the Twelfth Doctor would melt fans' hearts and make for a truly wholesome cameo experience.
Doctor Who's 60th anniversary is fast approaching, and while there's plenty of information regarding the cast, there's still hope for the return of more former stars. Catherine Tate as Donna Noble and David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor are reprising their roles for the series' three-special celebration, and they are far from being the only actors honoring Doctor Who's legacy on its big day.

Warning: contains minor Spoilers for Doctor Who episode “Wild Blue Yonder”
We’ve been speculating about the 60th anniversary Doctor Who specials for well over a year now, with one detail after another being drip-fed to fans via announcements and trailers, and episode one “The Star Beast” having recently had a starry premiere screening, but with mere weeks to go we still know next to nothing about the second episode, “Wild Blue Yonder”.
This was a deliberate choice by showrunner Russell T Davies. Speaking in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Davies revealed his dream that the second special would air with no previews whatsoever:
“This is the secret one,” Davies explained, “I wanted to take one of the Specials and say ‘Let’s protect this one. Let’s try to reveal nothing about it’”.
While the magazine’s preview feature for “Wild Blue Yonder” keeps the cards firmly close to its chest,...

Tales of the Tardis opens up exciting possibilities for future episodes, with various Doctor and companion pairings to explore. Reuniting characters like Jenny and the Tenth Doctor could provide closure and new storylines for Doctor Who fans. Bringing back Martha Jones and the Master would offer more insight into Martha's side of the story from when Harold Saxon took over the world.
Tales of the Tardis opens a whole new universe of Doctor Who, with many tantalizing pairings now possible should future episodes happen. In preparation for Doctor Who's 60th anniversary special, the BBC has released Tales Of The Tardis. The show follows pairings of classic Doctor Who Doctors and companions, and not only involves the actors reprising their roles, but also combines individual older episodes to create new anthology stories.

Back before Season 3 and during Season 4, something seemed to be bringing the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) together. It all made sense in the two-part Season 4 finale. Now, for Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary in November, with Tennant (now the Fourteenth Doctor) and Tate back, destiny is coming for Donna and bringing them together once more. Ahead of the three special episodes, below is what you need to know about Donna Noble, as well as why Tennant returning as the Fourteenth, not Tenth, Doctor shouldn’t have been too much of a surprise. How the Doctor and Donna Met At the end of “Doomsday,” after the Tenth Doctor said goodbye to Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) in a parallel world, Donna, in her wedding dress, suddenly appeared on the Tardis. But it wasn’t until after another companion’s (Freema Agyeman‘s Martha Jones) adventures with the...
