"I want to see the future..." "What's in the future...?" Another compelling short film to watch, with a bit of a sci-fi twist. Instant is a short film directed by Alex Albrecht, produced by Roddenberry Entertainment, lead by Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, who is the son of legendary Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett. After a desperate criminal takes a bar hostage, six people must face their demons - past and present - in order to survive. But one of them is keeping a big secret that could change everything in an instant. The film stars Tyler Hilton, Manu Intiraymi, Phil Morris, Emily Chang, Tony Janning, and Tara Perry. This short has a few strong performances, working with an intriguing script that explores some engaging ideas. I wish this was a bit shorter, might be more effective, but it's still a good short. Enjoy. Thanks to SyFy Wire for the tip on this.

One of the producers gives us the inside scoop on how the Defender of the Universe nearly returned to TV screens.
DreamWorks Voltron Legendary Defender was a smash hit. The Voltron fanbase exploded in size, we got a new toyline, and new comics. After such a long wait after Voltron Force ended in 2012, it was great to see the series return to TV.
But did you know we were close to getting a live action Voltron TV series? No no, not the long gestating movie fans have been hearing about for over ten years. A TV series.

While attending Power Morphicon in August of 2016, I was chatting with the executive producer of Power Rangers Spd, Greg Aronowitz. A longtime fan favorite, Aronowitz is well known for his production work and special effects. On Spd Aronowitz was an executive producer,...

As Comic-Con approaches, so does Nerdist's 'Course of the Force'. The charity run to San Diego will kick off in a few weeks, and Nerdist has announced the hosts and correspondents who will follow the event down the Pacific Coast. Tradition media personalities such as Carrie Keagan and Ashley Eckstein will be joined by several familiar new media faces, including Shira Lazar, Jessica Chobot, Alex Albrecht, Alison Haislip, and, of course, the Nerdist himself, Chris Hardwick. All of these contributors cater to the nerd crowd in some way. Keagan has been a guest host on Attack of the Show in the past, Eckstein voiced Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Chobot hosts several shows for IGN, Haislip and Albrecht co-host 4 Points on the Nerdist channel, and Lazar has interviewed tons of nerdy YouTubers. As for Hardwick, we know for a fact he's as good of a host as anyone.

Over the past few years, actor Michael Shannon has seen the critical acclaim for his performances rise sharply, following a career of supporting turns in movies such as Bad Boys II and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. One genre the actor has yet to explore since his rise, however, is comedy. However, a new video from Funny or Die proves that Shannon is well aware of how to channel his characteristic intensity to comedic effect as well, as the actor does a dramatic reading of the now-famous sorority email that made its way around the internet last week. The video can be seen below.
****
As an added bonus, here is Alison Haislip, from the now-cancelled Attack of the Show! and current co-host of the Nerdist webseries 4 points with Alex Albrecht, with her own rendition of the email.

It was the end of an era this week over on G4. Their Attack of the Show! series came to a close after more than 1,700 episodes on the air. The show's cancellation was announced late last year as part of the plan to rebrand G4 as the Esquire Channel, focusing on programming for "metrosexual viewers."
Back in March 2005, Attack of the Show! replaced The Screen Savers, a beloved computer and tech help show that started back when the channel was known as TechTV. Over its seven year run, the Screen Savers hosts included Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Kate Botello, Kevin Rose, Alex Albrecht, and Sarah Lane.
After it was announced that Attack of the Show! would be ending, producer Joshua Brentano contacted Laporte and Norton about filming a special sketch for the last episode.

Deadline are reporting that New Line Cinema have lined up former Totally Rad Show host Dan Trachtenberg to direct their adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s well-respected and award-winning comic Y: The Last Man. Besides hosting the long-running (and recently ended) Trs with Alex Albrecht and Jeff Cannata, Trachtenberg is well known online for his awesome short film Portal: No Escape, which you can watch below. Y: The Last Man would mark Trachtenberg’s feature-film debut.

As of April 2nd, inquiring fans of Nerdist Industries can finally find an answer to the age-old question, “Are Chris Hardwick and his motley group of teammates associated with things geek any good at bowling?” The Nerdist Channel on YouTube (which is part of the video sharing site’s $100 million Original Channels initiative) officially launched this week with a handful of the no less than 24 original web series announced as part of the programming slate at WonderCon. The shows to debut include bowling, simians, exploding puppies and a five-year-old boy that just happens to be the America’s number one action hero. First up, Chris Hardwick’s All Star Celebrity Bowling features the famous podcaster teaming up with Alex Albrecht (Diggnation), Kyle Clark (Nerdterns) and Steve Agee (The Sarah Silverman Program) for a celebrity bowling battle royale. The first opponent for Team Nerdist is a group of equally (not-so) adept...

Why Watch? It’s a shrewd move that director Alex Albrecht from “The Totally Rad Show” (a person that I, in the interest of full disclosure, am friendly acquaintances with) chose to create an atmospheric character study instead of an all-out action blitz for Voltron: The End which, yes, features a pilot stuck inside a Battle Lion. That man also happens to be played by Psych‘s Timothy Omundson (Lassie!). What could have been an overt outpouring of fan knowledge and callbacks to the show is, instead, a smart emotional journey with an outrageous beard and a hell of a last second reveal that’s only injured by the movie’s title. Seriously. It’s great for getting the word out, but how cool would it have been to watch a solid sci-fi piece only to have that giant familiar face hit you near the end? That aside, it’s a sharply written, nicely...

Brian Brushwood is the spikey haired lovechild of David Blaine and Mystery (that’s not Criss Angel) who first gained notoriety in 2000 when he took his Bizarre Magic Show on a full-time college tour, wowing fratacular audiences with crowd-pleasing escapes and mind-reading tricks. Since then, the American magician has showcased spectacles on The Tonight Show and Life Beyond Limits, authored three books (Cheats, Cons, Swindles & Tricks: 57 Ways to Scam a Free Drink, Pack the House: The Ultimate, Ever-Growing Guide to Increasing Attendance to Your Campus Events, and Professional’s Guide to Fire Eating) with a fourth one in the works (Scam School: Volume 1 is scheduled to debut March 14), and logged at least 205 episodes of his Revision3 original web series Scam School. The program first debuted in April 2008 and was one of the then uber-tech-centric online video network’s first forays into the kind of show that neither Alex Albrecht nor Kevin Rose could’ve hosted.

Based on the popular first-person shooter video game series, Halo: Helljumper premiered earlier this week. It’s a perfect example of quality fan-generated content. Director Dan Wang used his passion for the Halo universe and Tobias Buckell’s novella Dirt (which, for the neophytes in the room, is part of Halo: Evolutions, which is a collection of official Halo stories released in print and audiobook forms) as inspiration for creating the live-action series every Halo fan has been dying to watch. “I've wanted to do a Halo movie for the longest time” said Wang over email. “I began to read a lot about the universe through the books and Halo wikis. At the time, I had just started getting into film so I made it my goal to make a Halo movie.” The series follows the exploits of Gage (Bradley Rose), a dying solider who shares the exploits of his time fighting against the Covenant,...

The German Short Film. Nick Ryan‘s The German (2008) short film stars Toby Kebbell, Christian Brassington, Glenn Mullins, Gary Murphy, and David Ryan. The German‘s plot synopsis: “November 1940, during the greatest conflict man has ever known, an epic duel unfolds between two ace pilots, each willing to take the match to it’s ultimate conclusion. Unknown to the pilots is a fate neither has considered.”
This short film immediately reminded me of the Paths of Hate (2010) short film. Since The German came out before that short film, perhaps it inspired it. Paths of Hate is far better though in my opinion, but The German has a better ending.
The German is a testament to the level of work being done in the short film format these days.

Voltron is one of the projects that never really seems like it's going to get made, despite ambitious pitches and concept art and the like. Whether or not we’ll see an actual film from the series is unknown, but one amateur filmmaker, Alex Albrecht, got tired of waiting, and decided to make his own. Voltron – The End tells the story of a Voltron pilot trapped in his downed Red Lion, where he finds he only has a few minutes to live. It’s quite well done, and has...

The concept of a "Voltron" live action movie has been floating around Hollywood for years. First 20th Century Fox owned the project, then Relativity scooped it up with Max Makowski at the helm. That version went nowhere, and Atlas Entertainment scooped up another version, which also went nowhere. Then "Conan" scribes Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer started while some epic concept art was released, and a huge bidding war went on over the property earlier this year, but so far nothing has come of a "Voltron" film for the big screen.
That's why "The Totally Rad Show" podcast creator Alex Albrecht has taken matters into his own hands. Why wait for Hollywood to make a "Voltron" movie when he can do it himself, and probably do it better. Enter "Voltron: The End," the three-minute-long "Voltron" short film that proves that a blockbuster adaptation about the Voltron Force definitely should be done.

It came out at this past San Diego Comic-Con that Relativity Media and Atlas Entertainment are teaming up to bring the popular animated television show, 'Voltron: Defenders of the Universe' to the big screen as a live-action film. Since the announcement, things have been quiet. According to the New York Times, World Event Productions is at the New York Comic-Con, which runs from October 13-16. The organization is there to promote the television series, presumably sculptures, box sets and the like. Perhaps a blurb about the movie will come out. In the meantime while fans wait, you can view a short film based on the television series. Called 'Voltron: The End,' it comes from director Alex Albrecht. Actor Timothy Omundson stars. He had a minor role in 'Starship Troopers.' Was that enough to earn him his lion licence? Here's the brief synopsis of the short: "When a man...

Voltron: The End is the realization of a childhood dream - a live action Voltron movie. It's also an evil, downbeat tease in the best possible way. Fans of the property - which centers on a massive robot composed of five individual mechanical lions - have been given the run around for years. Scripts have [1] been leaked, concept art revealed [2] and bidding wars reportedly waged [3] but even with the success of robot fighting movies like Transformers and Real Steel, we're still not close to a live-action Voltron movie. It seems like a no-brainer. Maybe this will be the push Hollywood needs. Voltron: The End was directed by Alex Albrecht, best known for his work with Diggnation and the popular Totally Rad Show video podcast [4]. He now joins his co-host of that show - Dan Trachtenberg - in making an awesome short film from a geek property begging [5] for a blockbuster adaptation.

Today, he dropped a short film on YouTube titled Voltron: The End. The short features an older Lance (played by Timothy Omundson, who plays Detective Lassiter on the USA series Psych), pilot of the Red Lion, recovering from an accident. It is short, but sweet and a total treat for Voltron fans.

Until the live-action version of the classic superrobot series "Voltron" actually gets going, Voltronites should content themselves with this slick three-and-a-half minute alternative, a fan film directed by Diggnation co-host and World Of Warcraft expert Alex Albrecht. "Voltron: The End" stars Timothy Omundson ("Xena: Warrior Princess," "Psych") as the controller of the Red Lion. Controller Lance comes to in his sentient vehicle (voiced by Heather Stewart), only to realize "the unimaginable has happened." As the Red Lion's charge is the whole universe, this is not good at all.

The following live-action Voltron fan film was created by director Alex Albrecht and stars Timothy Omundson (“Psyche“) as the pilot of Red Lion and the apparent last survivor of the Voltron team after a horrific accident has occurred.
When a man regains consciousness in a Voltron battle lion after an “accident” he has to decide does he live a few more minutes or try to tell the world what happened… the end is only the beginning.
This makes us want a live-action Voltron feature to go into production now more than ever.

Check out the short "Voltron: The End"
“Voltron” was one of those 80s series that I could never get into. An anime series that features a team of young pilots, known as the Voltron Force. The team’s individual vehicles join together to form the giant super robot, with which they defend the galaxy from evil seemed a little too psychedelic for me. Still there has been talk of a Voltron film as of late perhaps this latest film will some an indication of the gloomy concept it might bear.
In the series the Voltron team of five young pilots commanded five robot lions which would be combined to form “Voltron: The Defendor of the Universe.” In this undefined future era, the Voltron Force was in charge of protecting the planet Arus (ruled by Princess Allura) from the evil King Zarkon (from planet Doom), his son Lotor, and the witch Haggar,...

The writing was really on the wall for over a year, as rumors began to circle last summer that Revision3′s longtime hosted buddy-tech flagship Diggnation was coming to an end. The show’s hosts, Alex Albrecht and Kevin Rose became the beer-loving laptop cowboy faces of the network, as it first staked its flag on the internet TV scene in in July of 2005. Now with 340 episodes, by the official count at least, Revision3 announced today that its Streamy-winning longest running show ever will be calling it quits this December with a final send-off. “After close to 7 years of sitting on a couch each week, drinking copious amounts of different types of beverages while discussing the top tech stories submitted to and voted on by the community at digg.com, Kevin and Alex have decided to retire their weekly series to focus on the next phase of their careers,” wrote...

Portal: No Escape Short Film. Dan Trachtenberg‘s Portal: No Escape (2011) short film stars Danielle Rayne. Portal: No Escape‘s plot synopsis: “Chell, a prisoner,… discovers an Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device (Portal gun) and uses it to try and escape imprisonment but all is not what is seems.”
This is a pretty cool science fiction short film but I enjoyed Dan Trachtenberg’s previous effort, the More than You Can Chew Short Film, far more. I also prefer the tech present in the Bionic short film. That being said, all the allusions to Danielle Rayne resembling Sarah Connor from Terminator: Judgement Day I can see but Lena Headey‘s Sarah Connor for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is the one that has left a lasting impression in my mind.
The people behind the Portal video game have got to be happy that their main concept is being used in a venue like this.

If you're a gamer in the slightest, you've probably played or at least heard of 'Portal,' and it's sequel, 'Portal 2.' Both games are from Valve Software. The first follows a young woman who finds herself in a very strange predicament. Here's the synopsis from Valve's official website: "Portal has been called one of the most innovative games of the decade. A hybrid of Fps style and a new genre of spatial brain teasers, Portal offers hours of totally unique gameplay. Set in the mysterious Aperture Science Laboratories, players must solve physical puzzles and challenges by opening portals, maneuvering objects, and moving themselves through space in ways that used to be impossible." The second game picks up right after the events of the first, give or take a couple of hundred years. Below, from director, Dan Trachtenberg is a short film which draws inspiration from both games titled 'Portal: No Escape.

[1] Portal: No Escape is a must see for everyone, but especially video game fans. The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg [2], who has been directing commercials for the last few years, slowly working towards his feature film directorial debut. In May, he directed a horror short film "More Than You Can Chew" [3] for Black Box TV, which got a bunch of people in Hollywood talking. Dan surprise premiered a new short film at Comic-Con, which was met with a standing ovation by the almost packed crowd. The film brings a grounded realism to this sci-fi concept, which is rarely seen in video game movie adaptations. Watch Portal: No Escape now embedded after the jump. Trivia: ?The movie stars Danielle Rayne, who has been working on tv for the last two decades, including a regular stint on All My Children. If the strong female action character reminds you of Sarah Conner,...

“Those guys scare me,” uttered Kevin Rose last night after Epic Meal Time’s “Muscles-Glasses” (Alex Perrault) wandered out on the House of Blues stage with a bag full of Big Macs just as one of their now-infamous live Diggnation shows was underway. Rose and co-host Alex Albrecht had, after all, just minutes before watched from back stage as their opening act for the evening, the breakout hit web series of the year Epic Meal Time and its madcap entourage of food pirates showered fans with bacon, Jack Daniels and a Big Mac-kebob-stuffed-pig-on-a-spit while dropping a non-stop battery of F-bombs. In many ways, Revision3′s live indoctrination of the Canadian food stars represent a passing of the baton for the network that once rested its hat on the tech-heavy musings of Digg. Now giving way to a newer flagship, whose unapologetically brash antics making Rose and Albrecht’s beer...

Though The Avengers, Batman and Superman are more than likely not going to be swinging into San Diego Comic-Con this year, Spider-Man will be out in force. The schedule for Friday July 22 has been released and the highlights include that Legendary Panel we wrote about a few days ago [1] (though it's not in Hall H), a panel on Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson's The Adventures of Tintin and a Sony Pictures panel that includes Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Total Recall and, yes, Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man. Check out a bunch of the highlights, with commentary, after the jump. (And don't forget about Thursday [2] where Peter will be on the Masters of the Web panel.) Vork was bound to get his own show. Well, by that I mean the web needed more of the cerebral deadpan comedy of The Guild star Jeff Lewis. Thankfully, Lewis had made a few friends who know a thing or two about shooting web series after four seasons on one of the most popular scripted comedies online. Teaming up with Guild director Sean Becker, Lewis birthed a series of sharp five-minute sketches that would feature a number of his comedy pals like Felicia Day, Alex Albrecht, Tom Konkle, Vince Caso, Robin Thorsen and Jamie Kaler. The Jeff Lewis 5-minute Comedy Hour debuted back in October of last year with Guild-cast-heavy “Tag” kicking off the season. To date, it’s still the most popular in terms of views, netting just under 80,000 so far on YouTube. Throughout the season, 5-minute would push the comedy lines into mature corners, often slapping an Nsfw...

Check-ins on Foursquare unlocked the "Valley Girl Margarita," a potent take on the Door's classic Mexican Martini. Free beer, great weather, and killer soft tacos made for a great evening enjoyed by all (free food Ftw). SXSW Keynote speaker Felicia Day stopped in along with new media uber-agent George Ruiz, Diggnation's Alex Albrecht and Zadi Diaz of Epic Fu.
