With the Governors Awards just behind us, the Thanksgiving break right in front of us, every major awards hopeful having finally screened for pundits (the last one was unveiled on Wednesday evening) and the 97th Oscars exactly 100 days away, now seems as good a time as any to do a thorough temperature-check of the Oscar race.

The main headline, at this point, is that there is no clear frontrunner, unlike a year ago when Oppenheimer was clearly ahead of the pack. Rather, there are, in my estimation, six films that look all but assured of landing one of the category’s 10 slots. Alphabetically, they are: Neon’s Anora, A24’s The Brutalist, Focus’ Conclave, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, Paramount’s September 5 and Universal’s Wicked. Let’s discuss them one by one.

Karla Sofía Gascón is not happy with the dub for Emilia Pérez and has taken to social media to share her thoughts.
The Rebelde TV series alum urged her fans to watch a subtitled version of the film she stars in and opt out of watching the dubbed version.
“Please watch movies in the original version, at least the ones in which I appear,” the trans actress posted on X, the micro-blogging platform formerly known as Twitter.
In her statement, Gascón said, “Please, watch movies in their original version with subtitles, it’s not the same. It’s inevitable; the dubbing changes the acting. I love dubbing, but doing it myself, not watching dubbed movies.”
“They have given me an older woman’s voice imitating Mrs. Doubtfire,” Gascón continued. “It’s rare that they can find a voice that is similar to mine. In general, I feel that they are close with Manitas,...

The long-standing debate about what separates a lead from a supporting performance has resurfaced this awards season. Case in point: Netflix’s high-profile contender “Emilia Pérez.” The Spanish-language musical, directed by acclaimed French auteur Jacques Audiard, has already garnered enthusiastic reviews and is poised to be a significant player across multiple Oscar categories. But the studio’s decision to campaign Karla Sofía Gascón as best actress while positioning her co-star Zoe Saldaña as a supporting actress has sparked a heated discussion.
Saldaña’s role as Rita, a lawyer who aids the drug cartel boss Manitas in faking her death, undergoing gender-affirming surgery, and emerging as “Emilia Pérez,” propels the film’s narrative. Her extensive screen time supports this argument.
According to Matthew Stewart of Screen Time Central, Saldaña’s performance clocks in at 57 minutes and 50 seconds, representing 43.69% of the film’s runtime. It’s also slightly more than Gascón’s 52 minutes and 21 seconds (39.54%) on film.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit Best Supporting Actress, where a new contender is ascendant.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! I feel like this week’s column might be… popular. “Wicked” is out in theaters now, riding a wave of pre-release hype that hasn’t been seen in these parts since “Barbie.” Fans are fanning, stans are stanning, and I’ve got Ariana Grande winning Best Supporting Actress. We knew this would happen once you planted the seed, “Inception”-style, that typical Best Supporting Actress winners from musicals are more like Grande’s performance than what Zoe Saldaña does in “Emilia Pérez.” So, of course, I’ve made the swap — Ariana fans, tweet at me! — and while I’m always reactionary, it seems I’m not alone.

As of recent years, there has been a correlation with musical performances being recognized in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Oscars, with eight nominated since 2002, and half emerging victorious. This year, we have potentially three actresses from two movie musicals competing for the five slots: Ariana Grande for Universal Pictures’ “Wicked,” and Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez for Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez.” Let’s take a look back at the many scenarios where song-and-dance performers were cited for Best Supporting Actress and what that could mean for this year’s contenders.
There have been a myriad of supporting actresses recognized for film musicals at the Oscars predominantly during the inception of the genre, which include Jean Hagen for “Singin’ In The Rain” (1952), Peggy Wood for “The Sound of Music” (1965), and Kay Medford for “Funny Girl” (1968). But the first victory came for Rita Moreno for “West Side Story” (1961), who...

If you’re an awards watcher, you might have noticed that this year’s Oscar season discourse feels a bit more…rabid than usual. Stan accounts on Twitter getting involved, online back-and-forth about actresses’ work before their films have even been released, a general air of slavish devotion to projects that feels more than slightly cultish. What’s going on? Well, this is just what happens nowadays when two of the biggest pop stars on the planet are in the Oscars conversation. We can only imagine the response IndieWire will get for this list of the 10 best film performances by pop stars.

Selena Gomez keeps her identity a secret when auditioning for movie roles. The 32-year-old singer returned to the big screen with A24’s musical-thriller ‘Emilia Perez’, though Gomez has now revealed she and her agents have an unconventional method in landing her Hollywood roles as they try to hide her identity from casting directors to ensure her chances of getting film parts aren’t put in jeopardy.Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Gomez said: “If they think I’m too young for a part, or whatever the case may be, we use a tactic where we don’t tell them it’s me auditioning so that they just have to accept me auditioning. “Because sometimes even them just hearing that I want to audition, they’ll be like, ‘No, that’s not going to match for what we’re doing.’ Or it’s, ‘We’re going to hire people that nobody knows,...

Selena Gomez knows she isn’t the acting powerhouse that she once was. A star who was once at the pinnacle in the industry knows that her stocks have dwindled. But none of that can change the fact that she still is Selena Gomez.
Her name is still enough to turn heads in Hollywood. After all, everything that she has done for more than a decade can’t go away in a flash. But much to everyone’s surprise, her reputation has potentially cost her a few roles. Until she found the most ingenious technique to combat the situation.
Selena Gomez wants to do more movies and series in her career Selena Gomez has always loved being associated with movies and shows|| Netflix
Life has not been easy for Selena Gomez. Though the 32-year-old has quite the filmography to her name, that doesn’t do justice to the reputation she once enjoyed.

What makes a great musical? The immediate things that come to mind are obvious: singing and dancing. But the beauty of a well-choreographed ensemble number, or the power of a stunning duet don’t mean so much if the lighting is poor or the lensing isn’t up to snuff. That’s where the cinematographers come in. The musical films of this year show off the best versions of what the genre can be.
Wicked takes themes of light, dark and color to the extreme for a unique vision of Oz. Musical numbers take control of the images in Emilia Pérez. And anything goes in Joker: Folie à Deux, where fantasy and reality meet in the middle.

Ask Selena Gomez what she gets out of acting that music has not historically afforded her, and she replies in no uncertain terms: “Sanity.”
It’s an exceedingly honest answer, which is what you come to expect after spending any amount of time in Gomez’s company. The Only Murders in the Building producer and star has no patience for anything less than the unvarnished truth, messy as it often is. “She’s herself, always, and I think that’s part of why her fans love her so much,” says her Wizards of Waverly Place co-star David Henrie, who has routinely watched her open up on personal subjects, including her battle with lupus, struggles with depression and diagnosis of bipolar disorder. “They go, ‘Oh, I see myself in that.’ “
But for the foreseeable future, Gomez would rather get lost in someone else’s story, something that music has never allowed her to do.

How do the 2025 Oscars Best Picture contenders stack up on Rotten Tomatoes? And does the film with the highest freshness rating have a better shot at winning the big prize?
While critics’ scores don’t determine the Best Picture lineup (there are thousands of highly-rated movies each year), once the lineup is selected by AMPAS, there are at least a few tea leaves worth noting. For instance, the only film to win Best Picture in the last 10 years with a freshness rating lower than 90% is “Green Book,” which has a Tomatometer score of just 77%.
Last year’s winner, “Oppenheimer,” holds a formidable 93%, but it didn’t rank first among it’s competitors. That distinction went to “The Holdovers,” which has a rating of 97%. So, a movie doesn’t have to have the highest score, but it certainly helps its chances. And falling below 90% would put any movie at an extreme disadvantage,...

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, cinematographer Paul Guilhaume takes us through the climactic shootout in Jacques Audiard’s transgender crime musical Emilia Pérez. (Spoilers follow)
Karla Sofía Gascón as Pérez has been taken hostage by her former wife Jessi (Selena Gomez) and her new lover Gustavo (Edgar Ramírez), who don’t know Pérez’s true identity. When Rita (Zoe Saldana) arrives, with armed backup, for the ransom exchange, a shootout ensues and Emilia finally reveals her true identity to Jessi through a song. The scene encapsulates the film’s themes of identity, transformation, and the price of redemption. And, as Guilhaume tells it, it was among the most challenging to shoot. See the acclaimed Dp’s first-hand account of the sequence’s production journey below.

Of the many twists and surprises in Jacques Audiard’s audacious musical “Emilia Pérez,” the most startling comes during the film’s end credits, when one realizes that breakout performer Karla Sofía Gascón stars as the eponymous Emilia both pre- and post-gender-affirming surgery. Of course she’s the stunning Emilia, but she also plays evil cartel leader Manitas.
That’s a bold move, and no one involved in the transformation of Gascón into a male character took it lightly.
“I was scared for Karla when we had to talk about this part of the film,” co-head of makeup Julia Floch Carbonel told IndieWire. “I was scared to put her back somewhere that she, of course, had been really unhappy. But what we created, she was really joyful about it. Very enthusiastic all the time.”

After Allen’s ex-wife Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter Dylan Farrow wrote an opinion piece for the Los Angeles Times calling out actors who still collaborate with the alleged molester, Hall shared on Instagram in 2018 that she had second thoughts about starring in Allen’s “A Rainy Day in New York.” Hall had previously led Allen’s 2008 film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”

The 15th annual Governors Awards, hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, celebrated industry legends on Sunday night, most notably music and producing icon Quincy Jones, who died earlier this month at the age of 91.
The entire crowd was moved to tears when his daughter Rashida Jones, accompanied by three of her siblings, took the stage to speak about their legendary father. Rashida fought through emotions as she read parts of her father’s speech that he had intended to read on the night, and it was followed by an uplifting tribute by Jennifer Hudson, who was accompanied by a 12-member gospel choir. She performed “Maybe God Is Tryin’ to Tell You Something’,” a song from the 1985 film “The Color Purple.”

“It’s the Oscar for people who never made a movie good enough to win an Oscar.”
That’s how Governors Award recipient writer/director Richard Curtis jokingly described the Governors Awards — or at least, how he overheard his son describing it to son’s girlfriend.
In truth, the awards are bestowed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on a select group of industry standouts, whose career achievements merit singular recognition. Along with Curtis, who received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award (given to someone who has brought credit to the industry by promoting human welfare), this year’s honorees, as voted on by AMPAS’s Board of Governors, were Quincy Jones, Juliet Taylor, and producers Michael G. Hugh Grant called an Honorary Oscar winner an a–hole, studios spent big money to show off all their awards contenders and a posthumous tribute to Quincy Jones left everybody buzzing at the Academy’s 15th annual Governors Awards on Sunday night in Hollywood, turning a fraught time in the movie business into a satisfying celebration – and, of course, a prime campaign opportunity for everyone hoping to attract the attention of Oscar voters.
While the Governors Awards, the annual event at which honorary Academy Awards are given out, has become a reliably grand combination of cinematic cclebration and campaign event, two factors conspired to cast a shadow over Sunday’s ceremony, which took place at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland.
The first was the fact that Jones was announced as a winner of the Honorary Oscar back in June, but died on Nov. 3, two weeks before he was to receive the award.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored outstanding cinematic achievements at its annual Governors Awards, transforming the Ovation Hollywood ballroom into an emotional tribute to pioneering artists.
The evening’s most moving moment was the posthumous acknowledgment of music superstar Quincy Jones, who died just two weeks before the ceremony. His daughter, actress Rashida Jones, took the honorary Oscar and spoke a touching tribute. “His music has defined an entire century of culture,” she told the audience, underlining the love that permeated her father’s work.
Jennifer Hudson delivered a stunning musical performance during the tribute to Jones’ legacy, while Jamie Foxx provided a funny reminiscence. Jones had a seven-decade career in music and cinema and had already won seven Oscar nominations and a Humanitarian Award.

On Sunday night, per annual tradition, dozens of the current crop of top Oscar contenders — among them Maria lead actress Angelina Jolie, Gladiator II lead actor Paul Mescal, The Substance lead actress Demi Moore, The Brutalist lead actor Adrien Brody and Emilia Pérez supporting actress Selena Gomez — turned up at Ovation Hollywood for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Governors Awards ceremony, a black-tie dinner at which the organization presents special awards to industry legends.

The most moving part of the evening came toward the end, when Jones’ honorary Oscar statuette was accepted by his daughter, actress-writer Rashida Jones, who, flanked by some of her siblings, tearfully paid tribute to her father and read the speech that he had planned to give at the ceremony.
