The commercials featured the character Macgruber (renamed as "Pepsuber) from Saturday Night Live (1975), where Taccone also directed the MacGruber skits. The commercials were made by the show for Pepsi as ads for the Super Bowl. But as Super Bowl Sunday approached, NBC didn't get any feedback from Pepsi whether the Pepsuber spots would actually air during breaks of the big sports event. NBC then feared the spots would never make it to the public. They then decided to air the three spots during the commercial breaks of the Saturday Night Live (1975) broadcast the Saturday before the Super Bowl on Sunday.
