Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day – the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. The film made its way over to the United States in December… and it became the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in North America even before a black and white version was released under the title Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color. Director Takashi Yamazaki has let it be known that he’s interested in making a sequel, and during a new interview with Empire magazine he revealed that he would like to feature some “kaiju vs. kaiju” action in the follow-up, if Toho lets him make it!

The film has now crossed over $55 Million in total U.S. box office, making it the #3 Highest Grossing Foreign Language Film in U.S. history!!

Godzilla Minus One passed Hero ($53.7 million) and Parasite ($53.3) to claim that honor. The critically acclaimed film’s worldwide total currently stands at a massive $102.6 million.

The only international films ahead of Godzilla Minus One at the U.S. box office are:

#1 – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – $128.5 million (U.S.) #2 – Life Is Beautiful – $57.5 million (U.S.)

Godzilla Minus One is currently just $2.5 million shy of Life Is Beautiful‘s U.S. box office total, which would put it in the #2 spot for international films at the U.

The 66th edition of the Blue Ribbon Awards, presented by the Association of Tokyo Film Journalists, has announced its winners on January 24, 2024. The nominees are selected from movies released in 2023. The trifecta wins for “Godzilla Minus One” come as no surprise, sweeping the Best Film, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories. The official website for the Japan Academy Film Prize announced the 2023 winners of each category for the 47th edition on January 24. Films eligible for the prize included those released in Japan between January 1 and December 31, 2023 (which included 149 Japanese films and 221 foreign films), selected by a vote of the 3,950 Japan Academy Prize Society members. While the winners are usually announced at a press conference, the announcement was released in writing this year due to the Noto Peninsula Earthquake. The organizers announced that a portion of the proceeds from the awards ceremony will be donated as relief funds. The winners in each category, including the Best Animation of the Year, will be announced at the awards ceremony at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa, Tokyo, on March 8. The five films selected for the Excellent Animation of the Year are listed below. One of these works will be chosen as the Best Animation of the Year.

In the wake of Godzilla Minus One becoming the first-ever Godzilla movie to get an Academy Awards nomination – it’s up for the “Visual Effects” Oscar – we’ve learned that Toho’s smash hit monster movie has also been nominated for 12 awards at the Japanese Academy Awards.

And unlike the American Oscars, Godzilla Minus One is nominated for “Best Picture” over in Japan, a nomination many felt the movie should’ve received here in the United States.

Ahead of Toho’s Godzilla Minus One coming back to U.S. theaters in black & white on January 26 – for one week only – the film just became an Oscar nominee this morning!

Godzilla Minus One has scored an Academy Awards nomination for Best Visual Effects, and it’ll be competing with The Creator, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Society of the Snow, and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. Takashi Yamakazi, Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi, and Tatsuji Nojima are the listed nominees for Godzilla Minus One.

This makes Godzilla Minus One the First Ever Godzilla movie to be nominated for an Oscar, yet another feather in the cap for one of the best Godzilla movies ever made.

On that note, the film is roaring its way to $100 million at the worldwide box office.

Toho’s Godzilla Minus One has been a monster-sized success in U.S. theaters, scaring up over $50 million domestically with a worldwide total of just under $100 million.

As we recently learned, Toho is celebrating with a brand new black & white version of the movie, titled Godzilla Minus One Minus Color. It was released in theaters over in Japan earlier this month, but when will you be able to see the “minus color” version in the United States?

According to a listing on the official AMC Theatres website, Godzilla Minus One Minus Color will be getting a theatrical release here in the States on Friday, January 26, 2024!

One thing that Japanese cinema seems to lack particularly lately is tension, with the majority of movies going out of the country following the calm and smooth road the festival-darling directors have paved for the most part. As such, it is always a pleasure to watch movies that do bring much tension in the narrative, with Masato Harada proving once more, after “Hell Dogs” and “Sekigahara”, that knows how to handle the particular aspect. "Monster", directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, is one of the most acclaimed movies of 2023 that you probably haven't heard of yet.

Set in Japan, the film follows three people: the single mother Saori Mugino (Sakura Andō), her young son Minato (Sōya Kurokawa), and Minato's teacher Michitoshi Hori (Eita Nagayama). Saori begins to suspect that Hori is abusing her son, while Hori suspects that there's something sinister in the boy's head. The truth, which I'll leave unspoiled, is a lot sadder. The film is told from their three perspectives. Seeing the same sequence of events three times highlights how hard it is to truly understand someone by looking at them from the outside.

"Monster" enjoyed a film festival run, taking home the Queer Palm (bestowed to Kore-eda) and Best Screenplay (to Yuji Sakamoto) awards at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May...

Rotten Tomatoes and the Academy Awards don’t often go hand in hand. In fact, the Rt scores of Best Picture nominees/winners are a mixed bag. “Parasite” won Best Picture with a Rt score of 99% while “Green Book” emerged victorious with a score of just 77%. The site dishes out percentage scores to movie’s based on the film’s collection of critical reviews. The higher the score, the better the movie. Supposedly.

But, that’s not how it always work in tandem with the Oscars. For instance, “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” and “Roma” all scored 96% but lost Best Picture to “Green Book.” Perhaps, if the Oscars listened to Rotten Tomatoes more, things would go a little more smoothly? Let’s face it, Godzilla was never much of a looker.

But 70 years and dozens of films later, Japan’s favorite kaiju is roaring louder than ever in his latest big-screen incarnation, which may be one of the best Godzilla films ever. Arriving seven years after Shin Godzilla, the Japanese-made Godzilla Minus One puts the American efforts of recent years to shame (I’m looking at you, 1998’s Godzilla) with its combination of spectacular monster movie thrills and genuine emotion. This may be the only Godzilla movie that will make you feel verklempt by the time it concludes.

Toho International released the final trailer for Godzilla Minus One just as the massive creature stomps its way into theaters. The PG-13 sci-fi action thriller currently sits at 96% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics describing it as a “refreshingly humanist and nostalgic reboot” and “nothing short of magical”.

Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the film stars Ranman co-stars Ryunosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima and Minami Hamabe as Noriko Oishi. Yuki Yamada plays Shiro Mizushima, Munetaka Aoki is Sosaku Tachibana, Hidetaka Yoshioka is Kenji Noda, Sakura Ando is Sumiko Ota, and Kuranosuke Sasaki is Seiji Akitsu.

“The film takes place just after the war, when Japan has no self-defense force or no armaments,” reads Toho’s synopsis. “The starting point is what happens if Godzilla comes to Japan while it is completely disarmed.”

Shot in Japan from March to June 2022, Gmo marks the first domestic Japanese Godzilla film since 2016’s Shin Godzilla.

Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day – the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla film. Today, December 1st, is the film’s official U.S. release date (although there have been Early Access Fan Event Screenings in premium large format theaters since Wednesday), and to mark the occasion the final trailer for Godzilla Minus One has arrived online. After countless variations and sequels, plus major studio Hollywood versions, Toho is back in the driver’s seat for the first time since 2016 with a new take on the 70-year-old Godzilla franchise, a consistent run far longer than Bond and just about anything else. The very good news here is that just when you thought there was nothing new to do with the giant lizard who enjoys stomping on cities and all their inhabitants, along comes what might be called the first Godzilla art film — or at least one where the humans actually are three-dimensional and recognizable.

In writer-director and VFX supervisor Takashi Yamazaki’s (The Eternal Zero) hands, Godzilla’s screen time adds up to more of a supporting turn to the humans whose lives are deeply affected by his re-emergence. And unlike any previous film, including Ishiro Honda’s irresistible 1954 original, this one isn’t dubbed into English.

Godzilla Minus One, the 37th film in Japan’s long-running giant monster movie franchise, marches into U.S. theaters on Friday — and the early reaction from critics is ecstatic.

Amsterdam-based Piece Of Magic Entertainment (Pom) has secured European distribution rights to monster feature Godzilla Minus One from Japanese studio Toho and will release theatrically from December 1.

Pom have acquired rights to the film in 38 territories including France, Italy, Spain, Benelux, the Nordics, and Poland. It will be exhibited in Imax and 4Dx in select territories. The deal does not include the UK and Ireland, where distribution will be handled by Anime Ltd, or German-speaking territories.

Exclusive: UTA has signed Hirokazu Kore-eda, the internationally celebrated Japanese filmmaker known for titles like Monster and Shoplifters, for representation in all areas.

The deal is particularly significant, Deadline hears, as the agency continues to expand its presence in Japan, and throughout Asia more broadly. Kore-eda will work closely going forward with UTA’s Asia Business Development division, which looks to amplify Asian and Asian-American voices by creating and curating a diverse array of opportunities, between Hollywood and Asia, for clients, partner companies, and brands.
