The Austin Film Festival has unveiled its 2022 lineup, which includes Bob Saget’s final movie, the Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek-starrer Sam & Kate, and a filmmaking honor for Darren Aronofsky, the director of the festival’s opening night film The Whale.

Exclusive: In a fitting piece of nominative determinism, punk-rock icon Iggy Pop has joined the cast of dark comedy Blue Iguana, currently filming in the Cayman Islands.

The Stooges frontman, whose first band was called The Iguanas, which led to his nickname Iggy, is taking on the supporting role of Edward, the wealthy patriarch whose death kicks off a chain of unfortunate events for son Daniel whose plan to reconnect with his siblings hits a snag when he discovers they all want to kill him for his inheritance.

Producers William G. Santor, CEO of Productivity Media, and Nicholas Tabarrok, president of Darius Films, have announced a three-film production pact.

All three features will shoot in the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean under a broad agreement with the Cayman Islands Film Commission, the Cayman’s ministry of international trade, investment, aviation and maritime affairs, and strrategic partner Dart Enterprises to shoot four films in the country.

This is the first time the Cayman Islands has entered into a multi-production deal as it seeks to grow its film industry. The territory adopts strict Covid-19 protocols.

Sound should be 50 percent of filmmaking, but too often, it’s not. This is doubly true of television, where the pre-planning required to fully incorporate sound design into the creator’s vision, and the time it takes to then execute, is incongruous with the assembly line schedule of producing episodes back-to-back, week in and week out. So how does a TV creator like Sam Esmail, for whom sound is actually 50 perfect of his storytelling, pull it off on “Mr. Robot” and “Homecoming”? The answer is supervising sound editor Kevin Buchholz. “There’s a deeper connection that you can [make] with sound,” Esmail said. “But for me to really get a handle, even if it’s just prepping and looking for locations, it really is about how can I also include this other 50 percent, the audio, in the final experience. So Kevin is there and very informative at every step along the way.

Mr. Robot Season 4 Episode 10

Last week, Mr. Robot gave us its best episode of the season – an intense and stressful hour that saw Elliot and Darlene finally triumph over Whiterose and the villainous Deus Group. That the series chooses to follow up that installment with a meandering character piece in which Elliot only appears for five minutes is a perfect example of both the best and worst of Mr. Robot season 4 all at once.

In a show like Mr. Robot, it’s easy to view Elliot Alderson as a hero. And in many ways, he is. After all, he’s battled against the oppressive forces of capitalism, exploitative corporations, and the shadowy elite cabals that dictate how the world works for the majority of its citizens. Next to all those evils, a hacker with a drug addiction and occasionally questionable morals pretty much looks like Superman. But it doesn’t mean that’s truly the case.

“Not Acceptable” is the first Mr. Robot installment in a long time that reminds us that Elliot’s mission can and does involve deeply questionable moral choices, and that his decisions often leave significant collateral damage in their wake.

Happy holidays from Mr. Robot, which seems as unconcerned as ever with actually wrapping up any aspect of its final season’s story. In place of the answers—or at the very least, minimal forward plot progression—we likely expected here, “Not Found” instead offers us a bizarre holiday tale, in which Elliot, Darlene, Dom and Tyrell face down some demons of both the literal and figurative variety on Christmas Eve.

It can be easy to forget quite how big a deal, in its early going, “Mr. Robot” was.

It eventually became, fairly enough, a hallmark for narrative and directorial excess. But the series, about Elliot, a hacker attempting to remake America, had the real-life effect of remaking the USA Network, shifting the cabler conclusively away from its previous model of sunny workplace dramedy. Its broader implications included the launches of executive producer Sam Esmail, with Amazon’s “Homecoming” and USA’s forthcoming “Briarpatch” to his credit, and star Rami Malek. And its conceit, that the world is governed by entities interested in seeding chaos for their own benefit, has seemed more urgent since the show’s 2015 premiere. The near-perfect first season had the right talent and the right timing.

Exclusive: Ashlie Atkinson (BlacKkKlansman) is set as a series regular opposite Rami Malek and Christian Slater on the upcoming fourth and final season of USA Network’s Mr. Robot, from creator Sam Esmail and Universal Content Prods.

Mr. Robot stars Oscar winner Malek as Elliot Alderson, a cyber-security engineer who becomes involved in the underground hacker group fsociety, after being recruited by its leader (Slater).

Atkinson will play Janice, a chatty taxidermist with a peculiar sense of humor.

The series co-stars Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin, Martin Wallström, Grace Gummer, Michael Cristofer and Bd Wong.

Aktinson last year starred in Spike Lee’s and Focus Features’ Oscar nominated film, BlacKkKlansman and also was recently seen in the Netflix film Juanita alongside Alfre Woodard. On the television side, Atkinson’s recent roles include Syfy’s Happy, FX’s Emmy-nominated series, Fosse/Verdon and CBS All Access’ One Dollar. USA Network has finally announced when “Mr. Robot” will return for its final season, and with the release date comes a trailer set to a very unsettling version of the Christmas classic, “Silent Night.”

The teaser for the USA Network show doesn’t shed much in the way of plot information, but the somber music and lighting certainly fit the series’ bleak tone. An unseen woman questions series protagonist Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek), asking him how many people he has hurt to get what he wants.

Alderson doesn’t answer, but there’s no doubt that many people have suffered over the last three twisty seasons of “Mr. Robot.” Malek plays a vigilante hacker with dissociative identity disorder and a host of other mental illnesses, and his efforts to free the American public from debt spirals into all sorts of chaos. Blumhouse Productions has set Sophia Takal to direct a remake of the 1974 slasher film Black Christmas with a script written by Takal & April Wolfe (Widower) wrote the script. Blumhouse is producing for Universal and shooting soon in New Zealand.

Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail unwrapped only one big reveal about the coming final season of his series, which is known for tense action and psychological twists and turns.

“Is anybody here a fan of British television?” he asked a packed Tribeca Talks crowd at the Tribeca Film Festival. He then offered a gift he hopes will keep on giving. “Typically how [British shows] wrap up series, like the British [version of The] Office, you tend to do a Christmas special. So the final season of Mr. Robot is one very long Christmas special that will last about a week over Christmas of 2015,” Esmail said.
