Dark Nature begins with a much different, and more realistic horror than what follows. Joy is busy in the kitchen making dinner when Derek gets home. It’s obvious he’s not happy and from the way both Joy and the dog react we know that is a very bad thing. She barely escapes, the dog isn’t so lucky.
Six months later Joy is still trying to get past this trauma and her friend Carmen thinks she has the solution. She convinces her to join her, Tara (Helen Belay; Abracadavers), Shaina and some others on a camping trip/therapy session with the somewhat controversial Dr. Dunnely, “You guys talk about her like you’re in a cult”.

Dark Nature
Beginning with mundane but no less disturbing domestic horrors and moving on to a survival situation in a remote part of the Canadian Rockies, Berkley Brady’s Dark Nature is one of those films which evidently has as much story behind its development as it puts up onscreen. It played as part of 2022’s Fantasia International Film Festival, and it follows a troubled woman, Joy (Hannah Emily Anderson), as she tries to get over an abusive relationship by going on a hiking trip with a therapist and a group of women who have all experienced traumas of their own. I met up with Berkley early on in the festival and asked her about the origins of the story.
“I was definitely always interested in the dynamics between people, and dynamics between women,” she says. “And, I think, the role of friendship and being in the wilderness. I've had a.

The logline for writer/director Berkley Brady’s directorial feature debut Dark Nature describes it as “the story of a therapy group that is forced to confront the monsters of their past when an isolated weekend retreat tests their emotional resilience and ability to survive.” That’s pretty apt, albeit with one small issue: the Canadian film – […]

There’s risk dealing with a therapy group like that at the center of Berkley Brady’s directorial debut Dark Nature: the narrative quite often needs to turn into a “Trauma Olympics” if it’ll progress. She knows this and even includes the sentiments as a joke early on when one of Dr. Dunnley’s (Kyra Harper) usual patients Shaina (Roseanne Supernault) speaks about why she’s attending this woodland retreat in the Treaty 7 territory of northern Alberta (Brady is a Métis filmmaker) before trivializing those of newcomer Joy (Hannah Emily Anderson). It’s an important moment, reminding us the potency of trauma isn’t about some objective scale of relativity. Whether war (Shaina) or domestic abuse (Joy), the resulting suffering these women face is what matters.
It can be difficult to separate, especially when the correlation aligns for some. While the psychological horrors Joy faces appear stronger than Shaina...

Berkley Brady's feature film debut, the horror-thriller Dark Nature, will premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in one week, on July 18th. An exclusive clip was dropped today, check it out below. It appears the clip happens very early on in the film. Joy and her friend, Carmen, trail the therapy group as they enter into a gulch. While the other members of the group marvel at the countours of the carved stone Joy's trauma begins to act up. Dark Nature was originally presented as Dark Woods, part of the Our Dark Side program at Frontieres last year. Calgary-based filmmaker Berkley Brady is working on an adaptation of Metis author Maria Campbell’s memoir “Halfbreed.” The book, published in the 1970s, recounts a life of difficulty, struggle and discrimination, but it’s also a testament to the woman who ended up as a “pillar of her indigenous community,” points out Brady.
“We are looking at developing it as a series as well, depending on the interest,” she says.
“My great-uncle, who was an activist, is mentioned in her book. He was her hero. Now, she is mine. That’s why I came back to this part of Canada: I wanted to tell stories locally. It feels like the first time in history I am able to do so, so I am just trying to make the most of the moment.”

Canada’s Fantasia International Film Festival will close its 26th edition with a screening of July Jung’s “Next Sohee,” an interesting take on exploitation starring the Wachowski siblings’ regular collaborator, South Korean actress Bae Doona.
The film, which premiered at Cannes Critics’ Week, won’t be the only title to discover on the closing night, however, with a special screening of A24’s horror comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies” also planned. Directed by Halina Reijn and featuring Amandla Stenberg, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” breakout Maria Bakalova and Pete Davidson, the film shows a party game that leads to murder, all the while maintaining “a taut balance of uneasy tension and wicked humor,” teased the festival organizers.
The announcement came alongside Fantasia’s third wave of titles, finally rounding up this year’s varied selection. Among the world premieres, Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez will bring “The Elderly,” Shuichi Okita “The Fish Tale,...
