"Where were you on November 13?" An official French trailer (with English subtitles included) has debuted for the film Novembre, also known as just November, a reference to the November 13th, 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris. The film premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival playing Out of Competition, the latest from French director Cédric Jimenez. The intense thriller follows the Anti-Terrorism unit's attempt to hunt down anyone involved in the attacks in the days following the terror. The film stars Jean Dujardin as the leader of the police division, with an ensemble cast featuring Anaïs Demoustier, Sandrine Kiberlain, Jérémie Renier, Lyna Khoudri, Cédric Kahn, Sofian Khammes, Sami Outalbali, Stéphane Bak, Annabelle Lengronne, and Raphaël Quenard. This isn't the most impressive trailer overall, but it does have an intense build up as they send more police out to arrest and interrogate. Will they find all the guys? ›››

A gentle thrum of eroticism vibrates beneath this warm and unusual take on will they/won’t they romance from Leyla Bouzid right from the film’s opening moments when the camera gracefully but intently observes the naked form of Ahmed (Sami Outalbali) as he takes a shower. Although he is nude, this is shot in such a way that it seems sweet rather than intrusive by cinematographer Sébastien Goepfert, which sets the tone for a film that celebrates the joy and fears associated with youthful lust, while exploring ideas of internal cultural conflict, without making it feel tacky or like a diatribe.
Ahmed is first-generation French, the son of Algerian immigrants, and about to swap the working-class neighbourhood where he lives with his mum, dad and sister for the unfamiliar halls of the Sorbonne. Shy, in general, and even more so in the new environment, his first day in lectures on erotic Arabic.

Update: Xavier Giannoli’s Illusions Perdues (Lost Illusions) leads nominations for the 2022 César Awards, France’s equivalent to the Oscar. The Venice premiere scored 15 mentions, followed by Leos Carax’s Annette, which opened the Cannes Film Festival last year and has 11 nominations. They are followed by Valérie Lemercier’s Aline, the musical dramedy inspired by the life of Céline Dion which also debuted in Cannes and has 10 nods. (Scroll down for the full list of nominations.)
Interestingly, the three films that France shortlisted for the International Feature Academy Award race came in on the lower end. Cédric Jiminez’s Bac Nord (The Stronghold) took seven nominations, while Audrey Diwan’s Venice Golden Lion winner Happening settles for four, tying Cannes Palme d’Or winner Titane.
The latter was France’s eventual entry to the Oscars, but did not make the shortlist. It was also shut out of the Best Film category at the Césars today.

The first experience of lust often forms the basis of a coming-of-age story. Given that it’s a subgenre that is hardly underpopulated, in any given year, we tend to see quite a few of those awkward first fumblings, those early embarrassments, those clumsy hormonal attempts at seduction. But rarely are they outlined with the same sincerity and sweetness as in as the cooling influence of his reserve and cultural values meets the incoming weather front of a hot new passion.
The first thunderclap happens the moment Ahmed (“Sex Education’s” Sami Outalbali in a beautifully soulful performance) lays eyes on Farah (Zbeida Belhajamor) in the halls of the Sorbonne, where both are taking a course in comparative literature. It doesn’t help that the reading for the class, taught by Professor Morel (Aurélia Petit), is almost exclusively early Arabic erotic poetry, in which Ahmed, the French-born son of Algerian immigrants,...

“A Tale of Love and Desire” is the story of a young Arab man in Paris whose first love is accompanied by the discovery of a very different Arab culture than the one he knows, one that is sensual and liberating.
The film screens as part of the Zurich Film Festival’s New World View section, which this year is celebrating a new generation of Tunisian filmmakers.
In making her sophomore feature, Leyla Bouzid says she wanted to tell the story of a young man experiencing his first love and first sexual experience. The idea, she says, was “to propose another vision of masculinity, another kind of story that has not been presented in other films. It’s something that is absent from our cinema.”
Simply broaching the subject is difficult due to modern social customs. “Filming the body of a young Arab man, even if he’s French, how that is seen by others,...

On Tuesday, Netflix unveiled the trailer for “Sex Education” Season 3, which will premiere Friday, September 17. Created by Laurie Nunn, the hourlong series hasn’t released a new episode since January 2020 (due to pandemic-related production delays); the wait, as they say, makes the anticipation for the new season all the more intense.
The series’ Season 3 synopsis reads:
It’s a new year, Otis (Asa Butterfield) is having casual sex, Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and Adam (Connor Swindells) are official, and Jean (Gillian Anderson) has a baby on the way. Meanwhile, new headteacher Hope (Jemima Kirke) tries to return Moordale to a pillar of excellence, Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood) discovers feminism, Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling) gets a crush, and a lost voicemail still looms. Prepare for commitment animals, alien phenomena, vulva cupcakes, and much more of Madam Groff.

A new two-hour documentary about Janet Jackson, simply titled “Janet,” will premiere in January 2022 on Lifetime and A&e in celebration of the star’s 40th anniversary of her debut album.
Jackson released a teaser for the documentary, in which fellow musicians such as Mariah Carey and Paula Abdul speak about their relationship with the singer. The good days at Moordale High appear to be well and truly in the past.
Netflix has dropped the full-length trailer for Sex Education Season 3, and the new headmaster (played by Jemima Kirke) appears to be all about embracing change.
She's clearly been given the job of clearing up the school's image after it being declared "Sex School" following a string of very public controversies.
Hope sets out to change quite a bit about the school, including giving the students uniforms, painting over lockers, and among other wild things.
There's even a woman in one of the classes yelling at the students that sex is bad. Make of that what you will.
We also delve deeper into the complicated relationship between Otis and Maeve, who has clearly not been around each other since the whole deleted voicemail at the end of the second season.
Speaking of Maeve, it looks like...

Sex Education returns to Netflix later this year, and there will be some big changes.
Netflix unveiled a promotional video for Moordale High, which shows the students promoting the school under the order of the new headmistress.
Hope's plan is to get the school back on track, and it's clear that some of the students are struggling with a camera on them.
One of the most surprising moments shows Jackson putting his hand on Hope's shoulder, possibly teasing him having a crush on the new headmistress.
The purpose of the clip is to get people to "Choose Moordale!"
But, will the school be able to bounce back?

Netflix has released a new trailer for Season 3 of Sex Education, parodying an ad for Moordale Secondary School. The series returns September 17th.
Introducing the school’s new headmistress, Hope (Jemina Kirke), who replaced Mr. Groff (Alistair Petrie) when he was put on administrative leave, the ad encourages prospective students to “choose Moordale,” albeit with more than a few hiccups. There’s quite a bit of cheap green screen, and several Moordale students who clearly were not briefed on what to say before appearing in the ad.

Cedric Jimenez, the French director of “The Connection,” the Rosamund Pike-starrer “HHhH” and “Bac Nord,” will next be directing “November,” an action-packed thriller set against the backdrop of the Paris terror attacks of 2015 with a prestigious cast led by Oscar-winning Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”), Anais Demoustier (“Alice and The Mayor”) and Sandrine Kiberlain (“In Safe Hands”).
Written by Olivier Demangel, the screenwriter of Mati Diop’s “Atlantics,” “November” unfolds during the five days following the attacks which shook Paris, and revolves around the sprawling investigation carried on by a highly-secretive police brigade called Sdat (anti-terrorist sub-directorate) to track down the terrorists – including the two masterminds — behind the attacks.
Budgeted at $20 million, “November” is produced by Hugo Selignac at Chi-Fou-Mi Films, who had teamed with Jimenez on “Bac Nord,” and Mathias Rubin at Recifilms. Studiocanal is co-producing and is handling French distribution, as well as international sales on the film,...

The second season of Sex Education premiered on Jan. 17 and, just like the first, nothing is off limits. The Netflix series tackles topics relating to sexuality and identity that are often watered down for television or ignored entirely, and uses honesty and humor to thrust them into the spotlight. From sexual assault, to anal douching, asexuality, and how religion relates to the Lgbtq+ experience, all topics are approached thoughtfully, and in a way that's not often shown on screen.
Unlike many TV shows in the dramedy genre, Sex Education never box ticks for the sake of it, yet the show is unquestionably inclusive. The show's creator and writer, Laurie Nunn, crafted an ensemble of characters that are layered and intersectional, and most importantly believable. One character this is especially true for, is Eric (Ncuti Gatwa).
This season, Eric dates the new boy at school, Rahim, but at the same time they're falling in love,...

Netflix's Sex Education season 2 is a funny, raunchy and inclusive lesson in love.
Warning: contains mild spoilers for season two of Sex Education, as well as, by necessity, lots of references to sex, sexuality and sexual acts from the start.
Opening with an extended montage of our hero Otis (Asa Butterfield)—formerly unable to masturbate—joyfully wanking in an array of different places, to a choral rendition of The Divinyls "I Touch Myself" (sung by Belgian women’s choir Scala & Kolacny Brothers), Sex Education season 2 sets out its stall from the start. No shame, no euphemism, no topic out of bounds, the second outing of this John Hughes-style comedy series set in a rural British high school will tackle sexuality in all its forms with a bravery, intelligence, lightness and humor that no other current show achieves quite as well. It’s groundbreaking—but also sweet and funny.

Editor’s Note: The following review contains minor spoilers for Season 2 of “Sex Education.”
Premiering last January amidst the relative dead zone for TV, “Sex Education,” the sweet sex-positive comedy about a sensitive teenage boy and his sex therapist mom, instantly soared its way into our hearts. Otis (Asa Butterfield) proved a charming enough protagonist, but it was the eclectic ensemble of lovable characters surrounding him that made “Sex Education” the best teen comedy the U.K. has produced since “Skins.” As Otis’s mother, Jean, Gillian Anderson reminded us that she can do more with a strategically raised eyebrow than most actors do with an entire monologue. As “Skins” did for Nicholas Hoult, Dev Patel, and Hannah Murray, “Sex Education” introduced exciting new talents in Ncuti Gatwa, whose dazzling smile and infectious laugh made Eric one of the best gay characters on TV, as well as the darkly captivating...
