Stars: Naomi Scott, Rosemarie DeWitt, Ray Nicholson, Dylan Gelula, Lukas Gage, Raúl Castillo | Written and Directed by Parker Finn
The original Smile became a sleeper hit for writer/director Parker Finn in 2022, so it’s no surprise that the film has generated a sequel just two years later, especially given its obvious franchise potential. It’s particularly gratifying to find Finn back in both the writer’s and the director’s chairs, because he’s surely one of the finest jump scare orchestrators in the business.
Smile 2 picks up six days after the events of the first movie, as desperate cop Joel (a briefly returning Kyle Gallner) tries and fails to get rid of the cursed entity that infects each host and makes them see grotesquely grinning figures, before eventually killing themselves, while also wearing a monstrous smile.

Although Smile 2’s ending should have been exceptionally obvious, the horror sequel managed to make the twist feel like a genuine surprise thanks to some incredibly clever misdirections. Director Parker Finn’s sequel Smile 2 builds on the world established by 2022’s sleeper hit Smile from its opening scene onward. The bravura opening sequence sees Smile’s doomed antihero Joel venture into the trap house of some drug dealers so he can pass the curse onto them, only for him to accidentally also implicate Lukas Gage’s luckless small-time drug dealer Lewis. This bodes badly for Naomi Scott’s Skye.
A traumatized pop star, Skye Riley suffers from chronic pain and Ptsd after a car crash that killed her boyfriend, Paul Hudson. Skye relies on Lewis to provide her with Vicodin, but gets much more than she bargained for when he takes his own life in front of her...

Cameron Diaz is possibly looking for another good time with The Mask.
The actress, who just made her onscreen return in Netflix’s Back in Action following a 10-year hiatus, recently told Access Hollywood that she would be open to reprising her role in a sequel to 1994’s The Mask, starring Jim Carrey.
“If Jim’s on board, I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one,” she said of a potential sequel.
Diaz played Tina Carlyle in The Mask, which followed bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey), who transforms into a manic superhero, called The Mask, when he wears a mysterious green mask. The film was directed by Chuck Russell.
Last month, Carrey also shared that he would be down to put on the iconic green mask once again for a sequel.
“Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea,” he told Comicbook.com at the time.

After being announced in the late 2010s and then filmed in 2020, the majority of the world still hasn't seen Distant, and many are wondering where they can legally watch the movie.
Starring Anthony Ramos (set to share the screen with one of 17 MCU heroes being brought back in 2025), Naomi Scott, and Zachary Quinto, Distant is an American sci-fi film that follows an asteroid miner as he gets stranded on an alien planet and has to try to save his crew member.
The flick was produced by DreamWorks Pictures and distributed by Universal, but its release has gone through some issues, to say the least.

Naomi Scott recently starred in the horror sequel, Smile 2, and this successful outing has been a long time coming for the actress, who made her breakout five whole years ago. Smile 2 is the sequel to the 2022 horror hit, Smile. The franchise centers on a demonic force called The Entity, which plagues its victims with horrifying hallucinations of people smiling creepily. After witnessing the tragic demise of Rose at the end of Smile, Smile 2 focuses on a new protagonist, pop star, Skye Riley. Skye is played by English actress, Scott.
Scott may be somewhat unfamiliar to audiences, but she has actually been in the acting business for quite a while. Scott's first major role was in the 2011 Disney Channel original film, Lemonade Mouth, where she was part of a high school band. After that, Scott collected a number of small TV roles until she appeared in 2017's Power Rangers.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2024, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
When reflecting on any year in movies, the theatrical experience rings most memorable. From driving across the border to Ohio with friends to watch No Country for Old Men in 2007, to a 35mm screening of Stalker at the Wexner Center for the Arts in 2011, with so rapt an audience I was terrified to swallow for fear it would disrupt their experience—each year holds it own special memories and 2024 was no different. There was a lively afternoon matinee of Between the Temples in which I was the youngest present by about 25 years, and a sold-out Wednesday screening of Showgirls at the Academy Museum with Elizabeth Berkley in person. But judging from reactions on X.com, I’m not alone in my favorite 2024 theatrical screening being witnessing Interstellar in 70mm IMAX.

Did You Know Tara Sutaria Nearly Bagged A Key Role In Disney’s Will Smith-Starrer Aladdin? (Photo Credit – Instagram/Facebook)
Actress Tara Sutaria has been a prominent name in Bollywood for over half a decade. She has won hearts with her talent and versatility and carved her own unique path. However, unlike many of her contemporaries, Sutaria’s career began not with modeling or commercials but with a strong foundation in singing and theater, setting her quite apart from her peers and giving her a solid background before her meteoric rise in the film industry.
Sutaria made her silver screen debut in 2019 with Student of the Year 2, starring alongside Tiger Shroff and fellow debutant Ananya Panday. While she gained fame for her beauty and talent, many fans are unaware she nearly bypassed Bollywood to debut directly in Hollywood — as a leading lady. The Marjaavaan actress came closer to...

Gold House has unveiled its fifth annual Gold List with “Wicked” and “Moana 2” among the films being honored.
The list spotlights the most exceptional achievements in film by Asian Pacific creatives over the past year. It also serves as a guide for awards voters and celebrates a monumental year for Asian Pacific representation in cinema.
Since its launch five years ago, the Gold List has celebrated an emerging tide of increasing representation in film by honoring over 200 Asian Pacific films and creatives, with many proceeding to receive Academy Awards. Among those films are “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Minari,” “Rrr,” “Parasite,” “The Boy and the Heron” and “The Elephant Whisperer.”
In a year when Asian Pacific creativity dominated the box office —”Moana 2″ and Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” alone grossed over $1.2 billion globally — the Gold List celebrates these blockbusters alongside “All We Imagine As Light,” “Dìdi” and “Monkey Man.

2024 is nearly over, and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year, I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out, it all felt wrong. Wishing all of our Daily Dead readers a very Happy New Year celebration and the absolute best in 2025! Prepping for my year-end list, I read through our Daily Dead archives and couldn’t believe that our “Favorites” series has been going strong since 2013. Time is funny, especially since the pandemic, and everything feels both “not too long ago” and “ages ago” at the same time.
The past few years have had their share of ups and downs, including some significant family loss, but the winter of 2023 was especially challenging, and it marked the first year I didn’t put together my favorites, but I’m thrilled to be back with my favorites this year. Although 2024 presented its own set of challenges, I’m feeling more energized and hopeful than I have in a while as I close out this year and look toward 2025.

Yesterday, we shared a rumour claiming that Hasbro is moving forward with a new live-action Power Rangers movie and an animated TV series. The update came after the company's deal with Netflix fell apart, robbing fans of a slate of streaming projects featuring the iconic team of heroes.
X's @Jinsakuu has proven to be a reliable source for Power Rangers scoops and leaks in recent years. Today, he's shared several exciting updates about what's happening with the franchise.
He starts by revealing that the movie has nothing to do with what Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World) was planning for Netflix. It appears talks between Hasbro and Paramount Pictures have gained traction, with at least some chatter about a buyout which could see Power Rangers permanently fall under the latter studio's umbrella.

This article contains spoilers for several of 2024's biggest movesAs with any year, there’s been a wide variety of movies in 2024 that left a huge impact on audiences. Whether these were big-screen blockbusters or low-budget dramas, the year has been filled with interesting movies that have left their mark - and one of the biggest ways to leave an impression on the audience is by killing off a beloved character. Deaths are a major part of any story, and often the moments that are remembered long after the credits roll. The most heartbreaking movie deaths are the ones that viewers never see coming, and 2024 had plenty of those.
However, a well-executed movie death isn’t just one that shocks and upsets the audience - it’s also got to have a very specific purpose that makes the film better through its inclusion. Even movie villain deaths can be great,...

A couple of weeks ago, it was announced Adam Scott (Severance) and Danielle Deadwyler (The Harder They Fall) have the lead roles in the darkly comedic thriller The Saviors, which is currently filming in Los Angeles. Kevin Hamedani, who previously directed Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction and Junk, is directing the film from a script he co-wrote with Travis Betz. When Power Rangers hit theaters in 2017, the hopes of fans were as high as a kite. Fans were pumped, expecting a grand revival of the colorful team of teens who fight evil with the power of the Power Zords. The film earned a respectable $142 million at the global box office. This article contains spoilers for Smile and Smile 2
This article contains topics of murder, drug use, and self-harm.
Smile 2 hit theaters this past October, two years after the release of the original Smile. Though it may be a sequel, Smile 2 was an instant box-office success, earning over $60,000,000 at domestic box offices alone (box office mojo). The film follows troubled pop star Skye Riley (Naomi Scott), who is infected by the smile entity just as she is about to go on a world tour that will redeem her career.
Smile 2 teaches the audience much more about the Smile Curse itself, and how it works to infect the host’s mind. However, much is still left to mystery or unclear by the film's end. Much of this can be attributed to the film coming from the perspective of Skye, whose reality becomes increasingly warped as the entity infects her mind.

Alrighty, the 2025 Golden Globes nominations are in, so, let’s talk snubs. While some films and performances got the love they deserved, there are a bunch of amazing ones that were totally left out. Honestly, it’s like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had their own agenda and just decided to pretend some of these flicks didn’t exist. How can we overlook movies like Smile 2 or It Ends With Us? These films were truly buzzing all year, with top-notch performances, unique storytelling, and killer direction, but nothing. Nada.
And we don’t even want to get started with Nosferatu. It’s a literal chilling masterpiece that practically reinvented the gothic horror. No love? Really, rude. Then there’s Heretic, which apparently had audiences questioning with its mind-bending plot. Meanwhile, We Live In Time brought heartfelt drama and stunning performances, and somehow still flew under the radar. Really, it...

Smile concluded by revealing the monstrous Entity, only for this year's Smile 2 to up the ante in an unforgettable final scene. During Skye Riley's final performance, the creature showed its true face before infecting her and exposing the "Smile" curse to the thousands in attendance.
That's going to make Smile 3 an even bigger movie than its predecessors, though Paramount Pictures has yet to announce threequel plans. In the meantime, concept artist Vincent Proce has just dropped some of his terrifying designs for the Entity (via FearHQ.com).
Many of his pieces are sketched in pencil, though we also have a fully illustrated final design that highlights every grotesque detail on a monster that we still know very little about; worryingly, it also appears to be damn near unstoppable from what we've seen thus far.
We recently spoke to Smile and Smile 2 director Finn Parker and asked about the Entity's role in the latter movie.

Our top pick this week, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” may not seem like an Academy Awards contender at first glance, but our predictions indicate it’s likely to earn a nomination for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. It’s quite an achievement turning Michael Keaton into the freaky “bio-exorcist” Betelgeuse.
Tim Burton returns to direct this nearly 40-years-in-the-making sequel, which reunites original film stars Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara and adds Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Burton’s “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega. This time, Lydia (Ryder) agrees to marry Betelegeuse in order to enter the Netherworld and save her daughter Astrid (Ortega). It’s a darkly whimsical sequel that’s Burton’s best film in a decade, and it’s now available on Max.
Here are some other movies to stream this weekend:

Smile 2’s theatrical run was a successful one, and though the sequel couldn’t match the box office numbers of the first movie, it’s still a massive success. 2024 was a big year for the horror genre, and one of the most anticipated horror movies was Smile 2, the sequel to one of 2022’s biggest and most surprising hits. Directed once again by Parker Finn, Smile 2 takes place six days after the ending of Smile, and begins with Joel (Kyle Gallner) passing the Smile curse onto another person, who later passes it on to pop star Skye Riley (Naomi Scott).
Skye is recovering from substance-use disorder and a car accident in which her boyfriend died. In addition to that, to revive her career, she’s also preparing for a new world tour, but to make it all more complicated, she becomes the new host of the Smile Entity.

Adam Scott (Severance) and Danielle Deadwyler (The Harder They Fall) have the lead roles in the darkly comedic thriller The Saviors, which is currently filming in Los Angeles. Kevin Hamedani, who previously directed Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction and Junk, is directing the film from a script he co-wrote with Travis Betz. This one was was featured on the Blacklist way back in 2018, so it’s good to see it finally going into production.
The story centers on a suburban couple whose life spirals out of control when they rent their garage to mysterious tenants.
Matt Smith and Dan Gedman are financing and producing The Saviors under their new shingle of Highway 10. Adam Scott and Naomi Scott are producing for Great Scott Productions, while Nicholas Weinstock and Divya D’Souza do the same for Invention Studios, and Bradley Gallo and Michael Helfant produce for Amasia Entertainment. Although Smile 2 couldn’t quite outdo its predecessor Smile at the box office, the critically acclaimed hit was still one of 2024’s best horror movies. 2024 has been a great year for horror. From indie efforts like I Saw The TV Glow to franchise installments like Alien: Romulus, the genre has managed to impress critics while also excelling at the box office. After 2022’s sleeper hit Smile bowled over both critics and audiences alike with its massive $217 million box office payday, the pressure was well and truly on for director Parker Finn’s sequel.

Despite premiering two years after the first movie, Smile 2 picks up just a week after the events of Smile, and quickly shows how the franchise's horrific Entity traveled from Rose to Smile 2's protagonist, Skye Riley. The Smile movies are a recent horror franchise directed by relative newcomer, Parker Finn. So far, the movies have revolved around an invisible force called the Entity, which possesses unassuming victims and terrorizes them with visions of people smiling. Although Smile 2 follows some of the same beats as Smile, the movie successfully raises the stakes and expands the world of the franchise.
Though it would have been easy to make Smile 2 a completely separate story from the 2022 movie, the sequel includes various connections to the original film. These ties showcase how exactly the events of Smile lead into the events of Smile 2. The most obvious correlation between the movies is the opening scene,...

Smile 2 led moviegoers all over the world, and even the film's main character, to question whether vomit has DNA in it. The sequel begins days after the ending of the first Smile film and sees Joel (Kyle Gallner) pass the Smile Curse onto Lewis (Lukas Gage) before being run over by a truck and killed. Lewis then passes the Curse onto Skye (Naomi Scott), the main character of the movie and a world-famous pop star. In addition to Scott, the cast of Smile 2 includes Dylan Gelula, Rosemary DeWitt, and Peter Jacobson.
Smile 2 significantly raises the stakes of the first film, as it follows Skye dealing with hallucinations caused by the Smile Entity as she is preparing to begin a tour. After days of trying to get rid of the Smile Curse, Skye eventually takes her own life on stage in front of thousands of fans at the end of Smile 2.

When it came to casting the new character, Finn was looking for some very particular attributes. After all, if she was going to be a pop star, he wanted an actress with specific talents, including dancing and singing, along with the charisma, that “X factor” the most popular singers seem to possess. In Naomi Scott, Finn said he got exactly what he wanted. (Click on the media below to hear Parker Finn) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Parker_Finn_Namoi_Scott_.mp...

“Smile 2” is a horror movie starring Naomi Scott. It is directed by Parker Finn.
As he did in the first installment, Parker Finn once again takes on the roles of both writer and director for this film. Though it shows improvements in both direction and script, it loses a significant amount of the surprise element that made the original so unique. By playing with the boundary between reality and fiction, “Smile 2” emerges as a strong horror film, particularly notable for its visual aspects and meticulous production and cinematography. A key factor in its success is the performance of Naomi Scott, who carries the film from start to finish. Without her, the movie might have been just another sequel.
