Alex was born in London in 1974 and spent his early childhood in
Nigeria. He cut his teeth in journalism on the South China Morning Post
in Hong Kong and worked as a feature writer and commissioning editor on
the London Evening Standard before going freelance in 2003.
He has written about the death penalty, crime, harsh sentencing, religion, culture and human interest issues for publications including the Sunday Telegraph and Sunday Times magazines, The Guardian, GQ, Esquire, The Atlantic, The Nation and Texas Observer. He has reported from West Africa, Hong Kong, Guantanamo Bay and the U.S.
In 2012 Alex was awarded a Dart fellowship at Columbia University's school of journalism. He is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and Investigative Reporters & Editors and is a dual British / U.S. citizen.
