Hard to believe, but golf’s final major tournament of 2024 is upon us. The Open Championship (or the British Open as we’ve traditionally called it in the States) takes place at Royal Troon in Scotland for its 152nd edition July 18-21. Top contenders include current Masters champion Scottie Scheffler (pictured above) Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay, 2024 PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele, 2024 U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, Wyndham Clark, Viktor Hovland, Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa and Swedish sensation Ludvig Äberg. Last year, Brian Harman of the U.S. won his first career major championship and claimed the famed Claret Jug with a six-stroke victory. USA Network and NBC air The Open on TV beginning early Thursday (late night Wednesday), with streaming coverage available on Peacock, NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app. Peacock’s daily coverage includes four featured groups and featured hole coverage of the Par-3 “Postage Stamp” 8th Hole.

The year’s second major, the PGA Championship, takes place at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, May 16-19. Defending champion Brooks Koepka (pictured above) aims for his fourth PGA Championship title. He’ll face tough competition in Masters champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark. After a disappointing performance at the Masters, Tiger Woods hopes to show some improvement in his game. “I think every one of the majors he plays he’s got a better chance,” says ESPN analyst and reporter Andy North. “I think they all become easier walks for him as we get into the season. But I think he’s played well at Valhalla. He’s got some great memories there. He’s got a lot of great shots he can step up on tees and remember hitting. I think that’s really important.

Amen Corner. Butler Cabin. The azaleas. The green jacket. “A tradition unlike any other.” Golf’s first major of 2024, the 88th Masters Tournament, tees off at hallowed Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia with the first round on Thursday, April 11. Jon Rahm (pictured) faces Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffele and more of the world’s best as he aims to become the first repeat champion since Tiger Woods in 2001-02. While the Masters is steeped in tradition, Augusta National isn’t afraid to tinker with the course layout to keep pace with today’s longer hitters. This year, the par-5 second hole (“Pink Dogwood”) has been lengthened by 10 yards. The first and second rounds are on ESPN (streaming on the ESPN App), and the third and final rounds are on CBS (...

Is the Saudi-Hollywood love affair back on?
Judging by the third edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival, which wrapped on Dec. 9, the answer is yes. A parade of stars including Will Smith, Michelle Williams, Chris Hemsworth, Johnny Depp and Halle Berry made the pilgrimage to Jeddah even as the Israel-Hamas conflict raged just 700 miles north.
This year’s guest list signals a dramatic reversal in relations from five years ago, when Hollywood’s outrage campaign was in full swing following the murder of The Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi at the hands of Saudi government agents. In the aftermath, WME’s Ari Emanuel cut ties with the kingdom, returning its $400 million investment just six months after courting Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during his visit to Los Angeles.

Hilton Head Island (USA), April 17 (Ians) England’s Matt Fitzpatrick halted defending champion Jordan Spieth’s attempt to successfully defend the Rbc Heritage title on the third playoff hole and pick his first victory since the U.S. Open last June.
Fitzpatrick trailed Spieth by two with five holes to play but made birdies on the 15th and 16th holes to tie for the lead at 17-under.
On the third playoff hole, Fitzpatrick hit his 9-iron to within 1 foot on the closing lighthouse hole to set up the winning birdie.
American Indian Sahith Theegala, fresh from his Top-10 finish at the Masters, where he was ninth, shot 65 and was tied fifth with Hayden Buckley.
Fitzpatrick thus won on the Pete Dye course he used to play on as a child on vacation.

Hilton Head Island (USA), April 14 (Ians) South Korean golfer Sungjae Im found his touch just in time in the opening round of the US$20 million Rbc Heritage championship, a key event on the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour.

Augusta, April 9 (Ians) Brooks Koepka added one more birdie to his total to get to 13-under, even as his closest rival, Jon Rahm, slipped from 10-under to nine-under and the lead had swelled to four shots at the 87th Masters.
The play was suspended just as the lead trio approached the seventh green, which itself had a lot of water. That means the lead group, Koepka, Rahm and amateur Sam Bennett will need to play almost 30 holes on Sunday.
Augusta National officials announced that play will resume on Sunday at 8.30 am and the final round with players starting from first and tenth is expected to begin at 12.30 pm.
By the time play was called off, Koepka with a customary birdie on the Par-5 second — his seventh on a Par-5 apart from one eagle — had moved to 13-under, while Rahm, who started the third round at 10-under, picked a shot on...

Augusta, April 8 (Ians) Korea’s Kh Lee brilliantly carded the joint low score of the day with a 5-under 67 on Friday to make the weekend rounds of the weather-hit Masters Tournament and was joined by countrymen Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim.
The year’s opening major was disrupted by inclement weather twice in the afternoon before play was suspended for the day, but well before American Brooks Koepka signed for a bogey-free 67 and 12-under 132 total, tied for third lowest in the tournament history, to seize the clubhouse lead at Augusta National.
World No. 3 Jon Rahm of Spain was sitting on 9-under through nine holes of his second round before being called off the golf course while amateur Sam Bennett delivered a second straight 68 to sit in solo third on 8-under.

Augusta, April 7 (Ians) The Augusta National Golf Club seemed to have kept its sharp bite for the latter stages of the tournament as it threw up low scores on the first day of the 87th Masters. A benign course with soft greens meant three players shared the lead with 65 each and there were 42 scores of par or better.
There was a three-way tie at the top with Viktor Hovland rising to the occasion in Tiger Woods’ company and Jon Rahm showing he is a fighter to the core and Brookes Koepka once again emphasising his focus at the Majors. They shot 65 each on the first day of the 87th Masters.
However, at Augusta, the greens always become drier, faster and tougher as the week progresses. The weather is also expected to be rough over the next three days, as rains are expected in the second half of the second day.

Golf’s first major of the year, the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, is shaping up to be a showdown between the world’s three elite players: Scottie Scheffler (pictured), Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm. Since winning the Masters in 2022, Scheffler tied for second at the U.S. Open in June and claimed the Wm Phoenix Open title in February. Red-hot Rahm is reigning U.S. Open champion and won three of the first six tournaments he played in 2023. FedExCup champ McIlroy had a top-10 finish in all four majors last year and won the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January. Of course, there’s always the chance a Max Homa, Kurt Kitayama or Chris Kirk could sneak up and seize Masters glory. Maybe more Masters magic is in store for Tiger Woods, who admits his days as a competitor at Augusta are running short. Despite the media’s...

Father’s Day 2021 is one that new dad and U.S. Open winner Jon Rahm will never forget. NBC was also pretty pleased with the golf tournament’s initial ratings results. Rahm, who was leading golf’s Memorial tournament mere weeks ago before having to bow out due to a positive Covid-19 test, came from behind Sunday to finish birdie-birdie and win the major tournament. As far as golf goes, it was pretty bonkers. NBC followed up the golf with more U.S. Olympics Trials. Those are worked pretty well for a few weeks now, and Sunday’s track & field was no exception. Fox and The CW both averaged fewer than half-a-million total viewers last night, when CBS settled for a 0.1 rating among adults 18-49. NBC was first in ratings with a 0.9 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 4.6 million, according to preliminary numbers.

This was an extraordinary moment of live television. As CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz was wrapping up the network’s coverage of the Memorial golf tournament’s third round, saying that “tomorrow will be fun folks,” viewers could see defending champion Jon Rahm, leader by six heading into the final round, double over during a conversation with two men, visibly upset.
As the group headed to the clubhouse, with Rahm wiping off tears and his caddy turning away the camera that followed them, Nantz, clearly stunned by what was unfolding, addressed viewers.
“What’s going on here?,” he said. “Somebody gave Jon some news. This is not good.” (Watch the video below.)
It turned out the news the tournament officials delivered to Rahm after the final hole was that he had tested positive for Covid-19 and had to withdraw from the event he was so close to winning again. It was a major blow to Rahm,...

“What’s going on here?,” he said. “Somebody gave Jon some news. This is not good.” (Watch the video below.)

San Diego (California), Jan 26 (Ians) Given that there is already an array of incentives -- for instance, a $7.5 million purse, a potential winning prize of $1.35 million, and a swanky and eclectic oceanfront locale in Southern California -- one wouldn't think that talented professional golfers would find anything else to prompt them to enter the Farmers Insurance Open golf this week.
Yet that is the case with the annual tournament in San Diego, set for January 28 to 31. This PGA Tour stop -- where Marc Leishman of Australia arrives as defending champion -- never struggles to attract a stellar field, but this year the star power is even more excessive and the stage, Torrey Pines' South Course, is a big reason why.
The beefy, 7,765-yard golf course that sits high atop majestic cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean maintains such a persona that it is worthy of two top-billings in 2021. First, as site...

La Quinta (USA) Jan 22 (Ians) India's Anirban Lahiri got off a fine start with a four-under 68 and was lying tied-15th after the first round of the American Express golf on Thursday.
Lahiri opened with a bogey, but steadied himself to pick five birdies and finish with a solid round on a course that is more difficult of the two on which the PGA Tour tournament is being played.
Lahiri, 33, got off to a shaky start due to a few average shots.
"I did hit a few iron shots that kind of finished right where I wanted to hit them. But I kind of got it back later in the round," he said.
"I hit a lot of good shots but didn't really make a lot of birdie putt and then I got a couple of bonuses. I missed a really short foot on 14 and on 13 where I hit a...

Looks like we spoke (published) too soon. On Sunday, this TV editor and golf fan rushed to his computer to share Dustin Johnson’s remarkable putt at the BMW Championship’s 18th hole, forcing a sudden-death playoff with Jon Rahm. But then Rahm Immediately upstaged D.J.
Johnson had virtually no chance to force a playoff with the tournament’s leader Rahm, especially after D.J.’s tee shot at 18 found the rough.
But then, a miracle happened on NBC. And then another.

First, Johnson needed a birdie at the tournament’s final hole (in regulation) to tie Rahm, who was in the clubhouse with the lead.
From a precarious position, Dustin Johnson hit a very good second shot, but a hard bounce left him pretty far from — and well above — the hole. Any...

Broadcast viewers had barely any original programming to watch on Sunday night, as the major networks aired reruns left, right and center.
ABC technically won the night, with a “Celebrity Family Feud” replay leading the way at a 0.6 rating among adults 18-49 and 4.1 million total viewers. “America’s Funniest Home Videos” came second with a 0.5 and around 4.3 million viewers. Replays of “Press Your Luck” and “Match Game” both mustered up a 0.4 rating. 2.9 million pairs of eyeballs tuned in to the former, 2.8 million to the latter.
CBS was the only network which didn’t air entirely reruns, with its coverage of the finale day of the Memorial golf tournament hitting the fairway at a 0.5 rating and 5.3 million total viewers. Spaniard Jon Rahm came away a worthy winner of the tournament, snatching a spot at the top of the world golf rankings in the process. “60 Minutes” was delayed slightly by the golf,...

A polite ovation of golf claps is in order as the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament, which won a quiet Sunday night in the ratings. The tournament, which aired on CBS, delivered a 0.5 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 5.25 million viewers. The numbers, as with all live events, will likely be adjusted in the final numbers later today.
The tournament, won by Jon Rahm to give him the world’s No. 1 ranking, was followed by the only other bit of original programming on the night, a fresh episode of 60 Minutes (0.3, 3.73M). It took a two-tenths hit from last week. CBS ended the night with repeats of Tough As Nails and NCIS: Los Angeles.
Reruns, repeats and encores populated the rest of the networks, with ABC winning the night averaging a 0.5 in the demo with second helpings of America’s Funniest Home Videos, Celebrity Family Feud, Press Your Luck and Match Game.
