"Family Guy" has used this as a cutaway multiple times, and the show goes from animated to live action for a brief second. For Roy Orbison's only attempt at movie acting, he's in a live-action cartoon along with Sammy Jackson, and they provide some good songs but not much in the way of thespian skills. It's a goofy storyline involving Southern spies attempting to steal Northern gold towards the end of the Civil War, and they even have guitars that turn into rifles. The poor natives, led by Iron Eye Cody, find this out, and they only seem to be out to make some fun mischief when they go chase Orbison and his traveling medicine show filled with a bevy of beauties who are getting ready for a saloon show in San Francisco.
I found the native characters slightly amusing, about as realistic as the tribe in "F Troop", eye raising today with its stereotypical and degrading portrayals. The tide would turn in the presentation of minorities, and I didn't find anything two outrageous, although the chief is presented as a complete buffoon. Basically, kids were seeing the same kind of images on Saturday morning cartoons, especially on "Bugs Bunny", and I kept imagining various characters from this movie in animated form as this definitely covers the ground of Looney Tunes. It's easy to see why this MGM musical was not included in "That Entertainment!", but I can say that I definitely was entertained even with all the things that are oh so wrong.
