Why isn’t “The Masked Singer” on tonight, Wednesday, November 24? Due to the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the Group A Finals will take place next week instead, on Wednesday, December 1. That’s when Bull and Skunk will compete against each other to win a spot in the Season 6 finale. (Fox’s “Alter Ego” is also delayed for one week.) Unlike past editions of “Tms,” this season’s two groups have been kept completely apart from each other, so much so that they won’t meet up until the final episode — that’s when the winner of the Group A Finals (Bull or Skunk) will compete against the winner of the Group B Finals (Queen of Hearts or Banana Split).

Somehow, People’s Sexiest Man Alive has remained safe from the onslaught of cancel culture, which is a little surprising given the internet’s penchant for complaining about almost everything that objectifies or ranks individuals based entirely on their aesthetic qualities. The prestigious honor has been bestowed on some of the biggest and obviously most attractive names in the business since Mel Gibson was named as the inaugural winner back in 1985, and this year’s title has been awarded to Michael B. Jordan.
The Black Panther and Creed star has followed in the illustrious footsteps of such luminaries as Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves, Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington, George Clooney, Harrison Ford, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Bradley Cooper and Idris Elba, but one of People’s former champions has refused to concede in what may or may not be a thinly-veiled jab at certain things that are happening in the world right now.

One of the best pictures to come out of Hollywood in the late 1960s, Sydney Pollack’s screen version of Horace McCoy’s hardboiled novel is a harrowing experience guaranteed to elicit extreme responses. Jane Fonda performs (!) at the top of an ensemble of stars suffering in a Depression-Era circle of Hell – it’s an Annihilating Drama with a high polish. And this CineSavant review ends with a fact-bomb that ought to start Barbara Steele fans off on a new vault search.

Turner Classic Movies continues with its Gay Hollywood presentations tonight and tomorrow morning, June 8–9. Seven movies will be shown about, featuring, directed, or produced by the following: Cole Porter, Lorenz Hart, Farley Granger, John Dall, Edmund Goulding, W. Somerset Maughan, Clifton Webb, Montgomery Clift, Raymond Burr, Charles Walters, DeWitt Bodeen, and Harriet Parsons. (One assumes that it's a mere coincidence that gay rumor subjects Cary Grant and Tyrone Power are also featured.) Night and Day (1946), which could also be considered part of TCM's homage to birthday girl Alexis Smith, who would have turned 96 today, is a Cole Porter biopic starring Cary Grant as a posh, heterosexualized version of Porter. As the warning goes, any similaries to real-life people and/or events found in Night and Day are a mere coincidence. The same goes for Words and Music (1948), a highly fictionalized version of the Richard Rodgers-Lorenz Hart musical partnership.

Remember the cheesy Sinbad the Sailor adventure films in which he encountered monsters? That's what Kong: Skull Island reminds me of minus the cheese. Kong: Skull Island is a throwback to those classic adventure films featuring hideous creatures from the unknown. However, the action in Kong is far superior, brutal and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts clearly was influenced by Apocalypse Now.

Comedian David Adkins, better known by his stage name Sinbad, has starred in many films in the 90s, including “Necessary Roughness,” “Houseguest” and even the Kenan & Kel vehicle “Good Burger.” But one movie he didn’t star in is “Shazaam,” about an incompetent genie who grants wishes to two children. However, that hasn’t stopped hundreds of people online from claiming that the film is real, believing that they saw it sometime in the 90s.

Emmy-award-winning TV director Miguel Sapochnik has signed on to make a Sinbad movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Unfortunately, that should not be misinterpreted as a cinematic vehicle for ’90s-era comedy genius David “Sinbad” Adkins. This will be a film adaptation of the 14th-century Middle Eastern story-cycle of Sinbad The Sailor. Which also has the potential to be pretty good, especially since Sapochnik really made a name for himself due to his work on Game Of Thrones.

EW reports Legend of the Seeker star, Craig Horner, will play the Count of Monte Cristo, in the upcoming sixth season of ABC's Once Upon a Time. The title character from the Alexandre Dumas novel, Edmond Dantès is an innocent man framed for and wrongfully accused of treason. Once he escapes an island fortress prison, Dantès is hellbent on revenge. The Revenge TV series, which was cancelled after four seasons on ABC was inspired by the book.EW says, "Horner will appear in at least one episode in season 6, though details on what he’ll be doing are being kept under wraps." Perhaps, but one of the aliases Dantès uses is Sinbad the Sailor. It seems at least likely Horner will play that previously announced...

The title Arabian Nights conjures up very specific images. Itself a collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian tales best known for stories like Aladdin’s Wonderful Lamp, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and The Seven Voyages Of Sinbad The Sailor (all of which were not a part of the original versions but added in later translations), the tales have been fodder for visual arts ranging from centuries old paintings to the very earliest efforts from the fathers of cinema, like George Melies. The inspiration for musical pieces coming as early as 1800 and helping inspire literature icons like Marcel Proust and James Joyce, these stories have become some of the most recognizable folk tales in all of world history. And yet, few adaptations have been quite like the loose one (if by loose one means connected almost in name only) director Miguel Gomes has given the world.

Douglas Fairbanks Jr. ca. 1935. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. was never as popular as his father, silent film superstar Douglas Fairbanks, who starred in one action-adventure blockbuster after another in the 1920s (The Mark of Zorro, Robin Hood, The Thief of Bagdad) and whose stardom dates back to the mid-1910s, when Fairbanks toplined a series of light, modern-day comedies in which he was cast as the embodiment of the enterprising, 20th century “all-American.” What this particular go-getter got was screen queen Mary Pickford as his wife and United Artists as his studio, which he co-founded with Pickford, D.W. Griffith, and Charles Chaplin. Now, although Jr. never had the following of Sr., he did enjoy a solid two-decade-plus movie career. In fact, he was one of the few children of major film stars – e.g., Jane Fonda, Liza Minnelli, Angelina Jolie, Michael Douglas, Jamie Lee Curtis – who had successful film careers of their own.

Here’s a solution for the indecisive moviegoers. Not sure if you’re in the mood for a drama or comedy or a thriller? Well, how about an anthology? It’s like a good short story collection, or you could call this type of flick a movie buffet or a cinema smorgasbord. Most of the time, these films, in their earlier incarnations, center around a setting (Grand Hotel), a gathering (Dinner At Eight), or an incident (the big cash winners in If I Had A Million). There are animation anthologies (the most famous may be Fantasia or Allegro Non Tropo) and musicals (Invitation To The Dance). The most prolific type may be those in the horror genre, beginning with 1945’s landmark Dead Of Night. In the 60’s and 70’s, Amicus Studios made their mark with Torture Garden and The House That Dripped Blood along with the EC Comics-inspired Tales From The Crypt...

Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired a ninety-page "script-ment" from new scribe David Weil which lays out plans for a seven-film franchise based on the inter-connected stories in the famed folk tale collection "One Thousand and One Nights".
The plan is to re-imagine these classic (and in the public domain) stories as period-set big-budget CGI fantasy adventure tentpoles with modern themes. The 'script-ment' itself is essentially a bible for a potentially long-running franchise which 3 Arts will produce.
A compilation of numerous folks stories from ancient Arabic, Persian, Indian, Egyptian and Mesopotamian folklore, the famed work includes such stories as Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp, The Fisherman and the Jinni and The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor.

Here’s something interesting we have just learned about director Zoya Akhtar. Did you know she picks her movie titles from songs and more specifically from Excel’s films’ songs? For example, the title of her 2011 super hit Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is one of the songs from Excel’s film Rock On!! Imagine it could have been called ‘Sinbad the Sailor’ instead of Znmd if she had picked another song from Rock On!! Apparently everyone around her has been saying that taking the title from a song has been extremely lucky for her. So, for her next film she is taking that same road. This time around the director has taken the title for her upcoming film Dil Dhadakne Do from the popular track from Znmd. Apparently about a dysfunctional Punjabi family, the highly anticipated film has a very exciting ensemble cast which includes Ranveer Singh, Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a two-night celebration of the life and career of legendary dancer, director and choreographer Gene Kelly on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Film clips, personal remembrances and an exploration of the technology Kelly used to change the look of dance on film will be featured on consecutive evenings: Thursday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, and Friday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. Both programs will be hosted by Kelly.s widow, film historian Patricia Ward Kelly.
Kelly is perhaps best known for his remarkable dancing, but his talents extended to many different aspects of filmmaking. His work behind the camera, as an innovative director and choreographer, has had a lasting influence on the way that dance is filmed.

After being exposed to the gateway drug known as That's Entertainment! as a young child, I spent much of my early film-geek years seeking out the great MGM musicals. But one I never managed to track down was Gene Kelly's Invitation to the Dance (now available from Warner Archive). Most film books I read dismissed it in passing as a pretentious experiment, so I was excited to finally see the film for myself on DVD. Alas, the critics were right all along.

Are you a fan of classic films? Do you wish that more classic films were made available in modern formats? Warner Brothers (and recently, Sony) feel your pain. They've been offering entries from the Warner Archive Collection (classic films and television series) as made-to-order DVDs for awhile now, and to help raise awareness for this service, we're giving away four DVDs from the WBShop. One lucky reader will win Little Nellie Kelly, Invitation to the Dance, Yolanda and the Thief, and Thoroughbreds Don't Cry. To find out how to enter, just keep reading!
In Invitation to the Dance, Academy Award® winner* Gene Kelly brings his remarkable talents as star, director and choreographer to this glittering gala of music, dance and pantomime – and the result is a lush, one-of-a-kind musical flight of fancy. Thoroughbreds Don't Cry, a horse-racing tale, marks the first of eight screen pairings (plus two variety-act films) of...

Cyd Charisse dies at 86
Cyd Charisse, the long-legged Texas beauty who danced with the Ballet Russe as a teenager and starred in MGM musicals with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, died Tuesday. She was 86.
Charisse was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Monday after suffering an apparent heart attack, said her publicist, Gene Schwam.
It was her uncredited turn opposite Astaire in Ziegfeld Follies in 1946 that won her a seven-year contract with MGM. Her moves with Astaire in Vincent Minnelli's Band Wagon were often described as "heavenly."
One of the greatest female dancers in the heyday of the Hollywood musical, she starred in such big-screen extravaganzas as Brigadoon (1954) and as a young Vicki Carr in The Silencers (1966). While she strutted her considerable stuff on the screen, her singing was invariably dubbed.
Though she didn't often spend much time on the screen, her scenes made dramatic impact. Outfitted in the most splendid costumes, she wowed audiences with her dance moves in such 1940s entertainments as The Harvey Girls, Three Wise Fools, Till the Clouds Roll By, Fiesta, The Unfinished Dance, Words and Music and The Kissing Bandit. Her final dancing turns were in the '50s in such films as Brigadoon, It's Always Fair Weather, Invitation to the Dance and Silk Stockings, a musical remake of Ninotchka that reteamed her with Astaire.
