From the time he stepped in as chairman of Sony’s Motion Picture Group in 2015, Tom Rothman has heard the rumors that Sony would eventually sell because it didn’t have a streaming service or the scale to compete with its behemoth rivals. When you’re a streaming service, there’s only one way to celebrate the New Year. And that’s by IP mining to bring back a franchise that had no business in coming back!

With its list of new releases for January 2022, Hulu is raiding CBS’s closet and premiering How I Met Your Father, a continuation of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Complaints about unnecessary rebooting aside, perhaps its worth giving the Hillary Duff starring series a chance. If nothing else, telling a story about 2022 from a future perspective might play well.

Aside from Himyf, there aren’t any other Hulu original series to speak of. Instead, Hulu is opting to once again beef up its film library. Exclusive: Chris Mulkey (On the Basis of Sex, Captain Phillips) has signed on to a starring role in The Redeemer, the indie Western from writer-director Myles Clohessy, which is heading into production in Montana later this month.

The fact-based story about former U.S. Army sergeant Charles Robert Jenkins’ four decades of living in North Korea is to be produced as an English-language limited TV series.

Peter Landesman will direct the series for South Korean financing and production company Moving Pictures Company.

Writer Nick Osborne, who most recently adapted the “Last of the Mohicans” series for HBO Max, is adapting the non-fiction book “The Reluctant Communist: My Desertion, Court-Martial, and Forty-Year Imprisonment in North Korea,” co-written by Jenkins and Time journalist Jim Frederick.

Events began in 1965, some 13 years after the end of the inter-Korean war, when Jenkins abandoned his post in South Korea and walked across the militarized border into North Korea. He believed his action would get him back to the U.S. and earn him a short jail sentence. Instead, he found himself in another sort of prison, living for 40 years under a repressive Communist autocracy.

Exclusive: 1883, the origin story of how Yellowstone‘s Dutton Family came to own the largest ranch in Montana, began production yesterday in Fort Worth, TX. Taylor Sheridan, who wrote all 10 of Season 1’s episodes, is directing the pilot. He has added to the principal cast Isabel May (Alexa and Katie) who’ll play Elsa, the eldest daughter of John and Margaret Dutton (played by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill). Through her eyes will come much of the perspective of the family’s struggle when they up and leave Texas aboard a wagon train caravan into hostile territory toward a better life in Montana, where the fictional Duttons reside in the present. Lamonica Garrett (The Terminal List) has also joined the main cast as the right hand of Pinkerton agent Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott), who hitches a ride with the Duttons and many others who’ll fill the 30 actual wagon trains...

Sugar23, a Los Angeles media company founded by Academy Award-winning producer Michael Sugar (“Spotlight”), has raised $30 million and added key executives to oversee new areas of management, content creation, production and branding, the company said Wednesday.

The funding, led by SWaN & Legend Venture Partners and MRC, goes toward company development beyond Sugar23’s multiyear movie production deal with Netflix and aids in company expansion into podcasting and book publishing.

Sugar23 also announced it has acquired the rights to the New York City luxury retailer Bonwit Teller and that it is developing plans to relaunch the brand and has partnered with experiential agency Blue Revolver to bring to market new virtual-event technology.

“I wanted the infrastructure in place to be able to uniquely and completely service artists,” Sugar told TheWrap. “I have lived my entire career in the service of storytellers. … This company was designed not to leave any stones unturned anymore.

Michael Sugar has positioned his Sugar23 management/production business to become the next company to raise new coin to grow and diversify its business. Sugar23 has raised $30 million in funding earmarked to venture beyond its core production business beyond production and into myriad other businesses.

Sugar, who came up in management and production and whose credits include Best Picture-winner Spotlight, signaled some of the changes earlier this week when Meredith Wechter exited as WME partner and agent of such clients as Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa and Keanu Reeves, with rumors that she will join Sugar as partner in the management ranks of Sugar23. They are figuring out how her clients will intersperse into Sugar23. Sugar’s own clients include Steven Soderbergh, Josh Singer, Allan Loeb, Leslye Headland, Cary Fukunaga, Alena Smith, Jack Amiel & Michael Begler, Carl Bernstein, Greg Poirier and Dan Patrick.

A new year has arrived but Amazon Prime is looking to the past.

That’s not a bad thing mind you, as for its list of new releases in January 2021, Amazon is bringing back some classic movies and TV shows for its host of subscribers. Jan. 1 marks the arrival of all eight seasons of Dexter…roughly four and a half of which are great! Dexter will be receiving its own Michael C. Hall-approved revival later this year and thanks to Amazon you can catch up with the first run again. Speaking of show’s with disappointing conclusions, all nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother will come to Amazon on Jan. 19. It’s 2021 in just a couple of weeks, so now’s the time for out with the old and in with the new. And in streaming terms, that means get ready for a load of fresh titles to celebrate the New Year in style.

Rob Allyn penned the script and produced the period adventure film alongside sons and partners Conor and Jake Allyn via their production company, Margate House Films, alongside Ho and Conroy Chan for 852 Films.

Helmed by Sundance and Venice alum Michael Haussman, Rajah is the real-life story of Sir James Brooke, the swashbuckling English adventurer who in part inspired The Man Who Would Be King, Lord Jim and Apocalypse Now.

Brooke fought pirates and slavery to rule a kingdom larger than England in the jungles of Borneo, where the period epic was filmed with support from the Sarawak Tourism Board and Malaysia’s federal Fimi film rebate.

November can be a slow month for streaming services. Amazon, however, is entering into 2020’s penultimate month with some steam.

Amazon is really beefing up its TV library in November 2020. Both Community (which arrives on Nov. 8) and Scrubs (Nov. 14) will be added to Amazon Prime this month and in the process complete the streaming trifecta: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. That’s pretty impressive stuff for both shows. And then on the film side of things, November 1 sees the arrival of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Twilight, and the Underworld franchise. Somebody didn’t tell Amazon Spooky Season was over and bless them for it.

As for the originals, Alex Rider is the most intriguing TV series here. That is based on the British spy novel series and premieres on Nov. 13 on IMDb TV (which is available to all Prime subscribers). That will be followed by Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series on Nov.

Amazon Prime Video has a whole load of new content coming this November, and the best thing about the large haul is that all tastes are accounted for, so whatever you’re in the mood for, you’ll have a lot of options. From Christmas flicks to action films to some classic sci-fi and horror, subscribers will find much to enjoy from what’s hitting Prime next month.

In the social distancing era of Covid-19, Fantasia International Film Festival is coming online with a virtual edition taking place August 20th–September 2nd, and the first wave of programming has been revealed, including Neil Marshall’s The Reckoning, Brea Grant's 12 Hour Shift, Lars Damoiseaux's Yummy, and Tezuka's Barbara from Makoto Tezuka.

The recent Chattanooga Film Festival was a very well-received online experience, and we're excited to see what Fantasia has in store for attendees enjoying the fest from home.

Paramount Television Studios and Anonymous Content have decided to end their first-look TV pact.

The first-look and co-financing deal between the two companies expired at the end of 2019. Although the two chose not to renew their deal, they will still be involved in their current co-productions and series in development, including the recently-announced “Last of the Mohicans” project from Cary Joji Fukunaga.

“Anonymous Content and Paramount Television Studios have mutually agreed not to renew their first look deal, but look forward to continued collaboration on shared current and future projects,” the two companies said in a statement.

Paramount Television originally signed a first-look pact with Anonymous Content in 2014, before extending it through 2019 three years later. The second deal added the co-financing element.

Cary Joji Fukunaga’s “Last of the Mohicans” TV series has found a home at WarnerMedia’s HBO Max.

The Paramount Television-produced project — which is written by Emmy winner Fukunaga and Nick Osbourne, with “Watchmen’s” Nicole Kassell on board to direct — has been handed a script order from the forthcoming streaming service, a spokesperson for HBO Max tells TheWrap.

The project, which went into development at Paramount last April, is a retelling of James Fenimore Cooper’s novel about the French and Indian War that re-centers the classic tale on the unlikely romance between Uncas, a young Mohican, and Cora, the mixed-race daughter of a British colonel.

Fukunaga’s Parliament of Owls will produce the series along with Paramount and Anonymous Content.

FX network ("Sons Of Anarchy") is developing a new TV series adapting author James Fenimore Cooper’s classic novel "The Last of the Mohicans".

The new series, set in 1757, will follow the story of America’s beginnings as a nation "...as told through the eyes of Cooper’s classic characters from the historical novel..."

Published in 1826, the story was adapted for the 1950's Canadian TV series "Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans", starring Lon Chaney Jr.

Chris Crowe, who co-wrote director Michael Mann's 1992 feature film adaptation, will write the script for the new series with Kerry McCluggage and Steve Beck.
