CBS' "Family Affair" wasn't the biggest sitcom of its era, nor was it the most groundbreaking, but it popularized a found-family formula that would endure for decades after its original run. The series followed a lifelong bachelor, Bill (Brian Keith), whose lifestyle is interrupted by the sudden arrival of his three orphaned nieces and nephews. Clueless about parenthood yet suddenly the dad of three grieving kids, Bill recruited the help of several other characters throughout the series — most notably, his loyal British manservant, French (Sebastian Cabot).
"Family Affair" ran for five seasons on CBS beginning in 1966, and though it doesn't appear in syndication as often as other shows from its era, the series is still fondly remembered by those who saw it. Unfortunately, the show is also remembered for the unusual amount of tragedy that befell its stars. Child star Anissa Jones died of an overdose just five years after the show ended,...

Marty Krofft, one half of the legendary team behind H.R. Pufnstuf, Land of the Lost and so many more, has passed away at the age of 86. The cause of death was kidney failure.
Sid and Marty Krofft left an indelible mark on pop culture – despite their most famous works only really ever having a small selection of episodes to them: H.R. Pufnstuf had a mere 17, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters had 25 and Land of the Lost (a favorite here at JoBlo.com) had 43 across three seasons, their highest. Still, their works, which often felt like fever dreams and acid trips, remain some of the most visually arresting and – whether they ever fully realized or not – drug-friendly works of their generation. Sid and Marty Krofft, too, remained faithful to their creations as they were adapted for different generations, serving as producers on the Will Ferrell-starring Land of the Lost...

Marty Krofft, the savvy businessman who partnered with his older brother Sid to amass an entertainment empire fueled by such mind-blowing kids TV shows as The Banana Splits Adventure Hour, H.R. Pufnstuf and Land of the Lost, died Saturday. He was 86.
Eight years younger than Sid, Marty Krofft died Saturday in Los Angeles of kidney failure, his family announced.
“There’s nobody better on this planet,” Sid said of his brother in a 2000 interview for the Archive of American Television website. “I get a dream, and Marty gets it done.”
The pair already were well-known theatrical puppeteers when they were recruited in 1968 to design the costumes for the live-action portion of NBC’s The Banana Splits Adventure Hour.
Their four furry animal characters (Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snorky), members of a rock band, were an instant hit on the Saturday morning show, which ran from Sept. 7, 1968, to Sept. 5, 1970 (and in...

Marty Krofft, who with his brother Sid produced memorable kids shows “H.R. Pufnstuf” and “Land of the Lost” — as well as the 2009 feature based on the latter — has died. He was 86.

Often referred to as the King of Saturday Mornings, Krofft and his brother also produced a number of primetime variety shows, including “Donny and Marie” and “Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters.”
Sid and Marty Krofft began their careers producing children’s television with “H.R. Sid Krofft has had many milestones in his long career. He was the opening act for Judy Garland and Liberace, had his own theme park, joined the circus and appeared on Broadway.
Not to mention, he was the mastermind with brother Marty behind the TV and movies for H.R. Pufnstuf, Land of the Lost, Sigmund and the Sea Monster, Sideshow, and Middle Age Crazy. Most were so out there that the producers were accused of drug inspiration in their creation.
Now, at age 92 and after 82 years in show business, Krofft is about to hit another mark. Tomorrow, he’ll return to Instagram Live with the 75th episode of Sundays with Sid, an online variety show that has celebrity guests, live puppeteers, viewer “parties” and lots of reminiscing.
This Sunday’s guests include David Copperfield, Beverly D’Angelo, Paul Reubens, Debbie Allen and Donny Osmond.

A happy-go-lucky dragon with a yellow head who talks with a magic flute. Diminutive sea monsters frolicking with a pair of young boys. A world where lifesize hats run things. And presidents in a bar, laughing it up with Saddam Hussein and Barbara Walters. These are the worlds which have been the mainstay of Sid and Marty Krofft for over 50 years, and for which they are being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Feb.13.
The Kroffts’ craft developed out of several decades of marionette work, including their hugely successful “Les Poupées de Paris,” the first “adults only” puppet show, featuring naked marionettes, which opened in 1962. Its success drew the attention of Six Flags, who brought the brothers onboard as creative heads to install shows at all of their amusement parks.

Sid and Marty Krofft created memorable, magical Saturday morning live-action television shows including “H.R. Pufnstuf,” “Land of the Lost” and “Electra Woman and Dyna Girl,” but their success extends far beyond sea monsters, magic flutes and Vroom Brooms. They’ve entertained millions, employed thousands and inspired many of today’s content creators — they’re still in production today with “Mutt & Stuff,” which airs on Nickelodeon. Recently, a revival of “Sigmund and the Sea Monsters” appeared on Amazon. Now, the dynamic duo is being honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 45th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
“It’s not easy to be in the business with your relatives,” says Marty Krofft. “But we’ve lasted longer than most marriages in the world.”
“You just make it work,” says Sid Krofft. “We’ve been together professionally for 60 years. We argue, but that’s just part of being Sid and Marty Krofft.

While some directors learned their craft through thrift bare independent features, others came up through the TV divisions of studios; one such fellow, Steven Spielberg, would go on to have a fairly successful career with big screen projects. Before he would make that leap however, he started with episodic shows, and then onto TV films like Something Evil (1972), a fun ride that shows the kid knows his way around a camera. I’m glad things turned out okay for him.
Originally airing on January 21st as part of the CBS Friday Night Movies, Something Evil had the ABC Friday night juggernaut of The Odd Couple/Love, American Style to contend with, and posted Something Lesser in the ratings. Too bad, because even though Something Evil’s material, from the title on down, is paper thin, Spielberg whips up one hell of a wallpaper.

One of the best bonuses to come out of the original streaming explosion is the launch of tons of new content for kids and family, and that includes a few throwback titles, like Amazon‘s Sigmund and the Sea Monsters.
The original show first aired when I was about two, and was part of a larger Sid & Marty Krofft world that became an integral part of ’70s culture. While there is much to be said for both incarnations of the wacky, family adventure, the best recommendation you can probably give for either is that the spirit of the Krofft effort is fueled by such a childlike imagination that you’re going to end up with something fun. For good or ill, the new effort feels like transporting yourself back in time, not just because the production isn’t exactly updated, but also because the mindset behind the creation isn’t different.

Maybe God does give with both hands: Jon Hamm has been cast as an angel in Amazon’s upcoming Good Omens adaptation, the production announced Monday.
Hamm will play the angel Gabriel — aka God’s primary messenger — in the series, a role that is slight in Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s fantasy novel but which has been fleshed out for the six-part television show.
In a statement, Gaiman explained the change:
Once we had finished writing Good Omens, back in the dawn of prehistory, Terry Pratchett and I started plotting a sequel. There would have been a lot of angels in the sequel.

Amazon Prime customers will once again have a hand in deciding which of Amazon Video’s 2016 pilots get signed to full series. The streaming service’s new pilot season will debut two new hour-long dramas (“The Last Tycoon” and “The Interestings”) and six children’s programs, including the live-action “Sigmund and the Sea Monsters,” on June 17. Audiences are then invited to review the series and help decide which shows we’ll be seeing more of later this year—a focus group-like process that has helped sustain such award-winning shows as “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle.” “We’re focused on bringing customers compelling, must-see TV and we accomplish this by going directly to them for input,” Digital Video and Amazon Studios Vice President Roy Price said in a statement. “Their feedback has helped create series that have become fan favorites among critics and customers.” So get ready for the latest from Matt Bomer,...

Amazon has announced the lineup for its next pilot season with only two hourlong dramas making the cut, the rest being children's series.
The first is "The Interestings," an adaptation of Meg Wolitzer's bestselling novel. Lauren Ambrose leads the cast while Mike Newell directed the pilot about a group of artistic teenagers who meet at summer camp in 1974. As they transition into adulthood, their friendships are tested by tragedy, success, failure and secrecy. David Krumholtz, Jessica Pare, Matt Barr and Gabriel Ebert also star.
The other is "The Last Tycoon" from "Shattered Glass" writer/director Billy Ray. An adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's last work, Kelsey Grammer, Matt Bomer and Lily Collins star in the Depression-era story of a Hollywood Golden Boy who battles his mentor and boss for the soul of their studio.

As its existing original programs continue to draw viewers, accolades, and awards, Amazon is looking to add additional series to its library. Its next round of competing pilots will include adaptations of Meg Wolitzer’s acclaimed novel The Interestings and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s unfinished work The Last Tycoon, as well as six children’s programs.
The cast of Amazon’s adaptation of The Interestings will include Lauren Ambrose and David Krumholtz, with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire director Mike Newell helming the pilot. The project, based off Wolitzer’s 2013 book, will chronicles several decades in the life of a group of summer camp friends.
The Last Tycoon, which was published as an unfinished rough draft after Fitzgerald’s 1940 death, will feature its own crop of familiar faces, including Kelsey Grammer, who will portray one of the principal characters. The pilot will be Amazon’s second foray into the world of Fitzgerald.

If nothing else, Houdini and Doyle is a show put together by people who love watching television… and know where, and how, to borrow from the unusual things that seem to be working.
The danger involved here is that it will end up feeling too cobbled together. The obvious popularity of Sherlock, and other period mysteries doesn’t necessarily mix well with sci-fi/paranormal, even if such things are also gaining traction in the ratings. This one even throws in some of the goofy fun of Murdoch Mysteries, which is a great show, but sounds a little screwy on paper.
The long and short of it is that Houdini and Doyle has too many things going on to have much chance of success, and it has to also deal with the idea of keeping some semblance of the reality of two historical figures… plus ghosts.

Sid and Marty Krofft are no spring chickens, but they’re full of forward-thinking ideas, and as a result, their joint career is taking an interesting turn. Sid, 86, and Marty, 78, are best known for creating 70s television shows like H.R. Pufnstuf, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, and Electra Woman & Dyna Girl. In recent years, the Kroffts have ushered in several reboots and spin-offs of their existing shows, and their multi-platform approach provides a compelling case study for any traditional TV producers who are approaching new media.
The Kroffts have been producing shows together since the 50s, but the most relevant phase of their creative collaboration began in 1969, when they brought H.R. Pufnstuf to NBC. With its colorful puppets and unique characters, Pufnstuf has since endured as a cult favorite, as have several of the other children’s series the Kroffts premiered in the following years. In the late 60s and early 70s, the sibling team of Sid and Marty Krofft produced a number of strange yet imaginative children’s shows. These shows featured bizarre puppets and low-budget special effects. Their vivid and colorful programs (The Banana Splits, H.R. Pufnstuf and Land of the Lost) entertained young ones while at the same time, prompting parents to ask “Were the makers of these shows high when they made them?” Sigmund and the Sea Monsters is another fine example of the Krofft brothers’ zany style. The first season is now available on DVD and perhaps you too will ask that very same question.

Lidsville -Sid Krofft talked to me over the phone. That’s almost as wild and weird as the shows he created with his brother Marty that dominated the ’70s. Their live action Saturday morning series mixed puppets and people went perfect with the sugar rush from a fresh bowl of Count Chocula. This was like a weird childhood dream as I had so many questions that had puzzled me since childhood. Krofft was eager to give answers.
He was excited about Vivendi Entertainment’s recent release of H.R. Pufnstuf: The Complete Series Collector’s Edition. There’s also a normal H.R. Pufnstuf: The Complete Series. What’s the difference? A cool bobblehead of H.R. Pufnstuf. I’ve had little contact with the bobblehead since my two year-old has turned it into her new best friend. I told Sid Krofft how another generation has embraced the lizard hero of my youth.
