This post contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Section 31."
It's been a while since "Star Trek" fans have gotten a new movie, and even longer since we've gotten a movie that doubles as an introduction to a new slate of characters. "Star Trek: Section 31" is full of surprises, from its surprisingly light tone to its subversive use of pre-existing cultural lore from the "Star Trek" universe. (A non-celibate Deltan! A laughing Vulcan!) One of its biggest surprises, though, is that despite having been refashioned from a TV show to a TV movie, "Star Trek: Section 31" signs off as if its newbies are going to stick around.
Given the final tease that sees the Section 31 team take on a new assignment from Control (played by Jamie Lee Curtis), this may not be the last we see of Chameloid Quasi (Sam Richardson), Augment Alok (Omari Hardwick), Deltan Melle (Humberly Gonzalez...

NCIS almost hit a dead end before it truly took off. And the reason was David McCallum’s Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard. Back in the early days, creator Donald Bellisario drew a hard line. McCallum’s casting as the quirky, bowtie-loving medical examiner was so essential that Bellisario threatened to pull the plug entirely if it didn’t happen.

For a show that became a procedural juggernaut, the stakes couldn’t have been higher. Ducky, after all, was the heartbeat Bellisario refused to compromise on.

Back in the early NCIS days, David McCallum’s Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard nearly didn’t make the cut. And creator Donald Bellisario was ready to cancel the entire show if McCallum didn’t get the role.

"Fantasy Island," Gene Levitt's ABC series that ran from 1977 to 1984, had a simple enough premise for it to be contained entirely within the show's title. An island where people come to live out their fantasies was enough of an idea to spawn two made-for-tv movies and seven seasons of fantasy drama, anchored by the great Ricardo Montalbán, who played the mysterious and distinguished Mr. Roarke. Roarke hosted the island's many guests and oversaw their fantasies coming to life, accompanied initially by his assistant Tattoo (Hervé Villechaize).
"Fantasy Island" became popular during its seven years on the air, and Tattoo's catchphrase "The plane, the plane," which he delivered at the top of every episode, was absorbed into the cultural lexicon. The show's popularity hasn't endured quite as well as some other series from the era, though, which is probably partly why Blumhouse's terrible horror getaway version of "Fantasy Island" failed...

The 1984-1996 crime drama sensation Murder, She Wrote is getting the motion-picture treatment, courtesy of Universal Pictures’ Amy Pascal-produced Murder, She Wrote movie. The original Murder, She Wrote TV show starred Angela Lansbury in an era-defining role as Jessica Fletcher — the sleuthing murder-solving mystery novelist, as she unearthed foul play in the Maine town of Cabot Cove. Murder, She Wrote was a huge success and influenced almost every crime drama that’s followed since, with Lansbury receiving an Emmy nomination for every season.
Despite the lasting legacy of Murder, She Wrote and how much Lansbury’s Jessica Fletcher is entrenched in the history of fictional detectives, there have been few attempts to reinvigorate the title (save for a canceled 2013 reboot). That all changed in 2023 when it was announced that Universal Pictures were forging ahead with the Murder, She Wrote movie. With Little Women and Spider-Man: Homecoming producer Amy Pascal...

Jamie Lee Curtis is looking likely to take over from the late Angela Lansbury in a new take on Murder, She Wrote. More here.
We’ve known for over a year now that a film version of the beloved 1980s TV series, Murder, She Wrote is heading our way courtesy of the writing team behind 2023’s Dumb Money.
The writers of the film, Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, revealed in September of that year that they were teaming with producer Amy Pascal to work on an adaptation of Murder, She Wrote, the classic 1980s US murder mystery show that made the late Angela Lansbury into a beloved star.
Of course, that announcement came at the very tail-end of the Hollywood writers’ strikes so just how quickly things got up and running, we can only guess, but accoring to Deadline, things are definitely moving. What’s more with none other...

Universal is looking to Jamie Lee Curtis to pick up where Angela Lansbury left off for the studio’s Murder, She Wrote movie. There’s no deal yet, but Curtis is the studio’s top choice to play Jessica Fletcher in a film based on the 12-season CBS series.
The script is by Dumb Money scribes Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, and Lord Miller and Amy Pascal are producing it. Plans to scope out a Murder, She Wrote film come at a time when whodunit stories are making a killer comeback. Rian Johnson’s Knives Out Mysteries series is a smash hit with audiences. Some of the best classic TV shows feature an incredibly cool female lead character. While many of the best TV shows of all time have diverse casts, with characters of varying genders, races, and sexualities, those with a female lead typically stand out. Representation in TV is unbelievably important, and many look up to these strong female characters, regardless of how they identify themselves.
The label cool can vary in definition, depending on who is watching. Many consider a cool character to be someone who is suave and lives an exciting life, and while this isn’t incorrect, others can be considered as such because they are relatable to audiences. These female leads are cool in several different ways, but ultimately, they are remembered for their unique personalities and being the face of their respective shows.

Despite the fact that he only tapes one show a week and is currently enjoying a hiatus that will last until early 2025, Bill Maher may still pack it in and quit his HBO series Real Time for good — meaning that Americans will have to find somewhere else to get vaccine misinformation from a former Murder, She Wrote guest star.
This marks the second time that Maher has publicly stated that he will be quitting one of his professional activities during a booze-fueled episode of his YouTube show. Back in May, Maher told Jerry Seinfeld that he was planning on retiring from stand-up comedy. Now, again on Club Random, Maher has said that he may walk away from Real Time. And his explanation was both lazy and self-aggrandizing.

Earl Holliman, an actor whose scores of credits spanning a half-century ranged from 1950s films Forbidden Planet and Giant to Police Woman and others popular ’70s and ’80s TV dramas and starred in the first episode of The Twilight Zone, died Monday in Los Angeles after a short illness. He was 96.
His niece, Theresa Mullins Harris, announced the news on social media, writing in part: “His dream at 5 years old of becoming a movie star came true, more than he ever could have imagined.”
Holliman got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame won a Supporting Actor Golden Globe for 1957’s The Rainmaker and was nominated for the short-lived early-’90s ABC sitcom Delta, starring Delta Burke. He was a series regular on the latter, playing the understanding owner of a bar where aspiring country singer Delta Bishop (Burke) worked while trying to make it.

Before Tom Cruise was driving motorcycles off cliffs, clinging to planes, and fighting bad guys atop moving trains in the name of "Mission: Impossible," the franchise had its humble beginnings in the form of a very '60s CBS series. The original "Mission: Impossible" was a spy series with a rotating cast of characters created by Bruce Gellar, who died in a plane crash just five years after the show ended. Several key cast members have passed away in the years since then, including Peter Graves, Greg Morris, Martin Landau, Steven Hill, and, of course, Leonard Nimoy.
"Mission: Impossible" was a huge success when it aired, winning 10 Emmys throughout its seven-season run and producing 171 episodes. The show inspired an '80s revival series, but "Mission: Impossible" really took off when Cruise (and Brian De Palma) got a hold of the franchise in 1996. Michael Moriarty remembered his exit from NBC’s Law & Order very differently from other accounts of Dick Wolf and other crew members. According to Moriarty, he rage-quit the series over then-Attorney General Janet Reno’s comments on the show’s violent content. However, Wolf later revealed that his firing did not have anything to do with Reno.

Moriarty claimed that NBC and Wolf tried to defame him by announcing that he was fired for misbehavior. He played Ben Stone for four seasons and 88 episodes before he quit the series in 1994. Moriarty since left the United States and moved to Canada, where he acted in a few projects before his retirement.

Decades before shows like "Search Party" took an ever-shifting approach to the comedic TV format, "Laverne & Shirley" was switching things up season after season. The "Happy Days" spinoff started with a pretty consistent premise in its early seasons, focusing on two zany roommates working at a Milwaukee bottling company. By season 5, though, tomboy Laverne (Penny Marshall) and optimist Shirley (Cindy Williams) ended up in the Army Reserves, and season 6 saw them move to Burbank and work as department store gift wrappers. By the final season, Shirley was gone, and Laverne was working in the aerospace industry.
As wild as the twists and turns of "Laverne & Shirley" were, the show had some constants across its eight seasons, including the presence of neighbors Lenny (Michael McKean) and Squiggy (David Lander), Laverne's dad Frank (Phil Foster), and Shirley's fame-hungry ex, Carmine (Eddie Mekka). A handful of engaging mystery shows are led by women working as smart and intuitive detectives. Classic mystery shows like Cagney & Lacey paved the way for women to be leading figures in TV roles that had previously been dominated by male actors. Women in these roles typically break down an assortment of barriers as they prove to be successful despite doubts surrounding them because of their trauma or age. While it's not necessary for women-led mystery shows to do so, most feature complex leading ladies who are dealing with a difficult personal life.
The traumatic experiences impacting Sharp Objects' Camille or Jessica Jones' titular character, for example, are presented as the characters are trying to help those around them. Women-led mystery shows open the door for more varied and elaborate leading characters in the genre. These characters weren't common on TV before shows like Murder, She Wrote, but have become increasingly more common,...

Nicholas Pryor, whose nearly seven-decade acting career included hundreds of episodes of soap operas, playing Tom Cruise’s dad in Risky Business and Kathleen Robertson’s dad on Beverly Hills, 90210, died October 7. He was 89.
Fellow actor Jon Lindstrom announced the news on social media, saying in part: “Nick was an Actor’s actor, and an exceptional friend. … He was a mentor, a sounding board, a trusted confidant, and even a father-figure beyond, yes, playing my own father on #Gh and #PortCharles.” See his full post below.
Pryor racked up nearly 175 screen credits and half-dozen more on Broadway. After getting his screen start guesting on such 1950s and early ’60s TV series as Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Doctors, he played Tom Baxter in more than 75 episodes of the NBC daytime drama Another World. That led to a starring role on The Nurses, a 1965-67 continuation of CBS’ The Nurses, which...

Image Source: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment By 1984, Angela Lansbury had already been on American screens for 40 years, having made her film debut in 1944’s Gaslight, a film for which she earned her first Oscar nomination. As her big screen output began to wane, Lansbury did a lot more theater work, and then started to consider television roles, appearing in several miniseries in the early ’80s. But 1984 brought her the opportunity to do something she’d never done before: take the lead role in a television series. And what a series that turned out to be! Murder, She Wrote ran for 12 seasons and more than 250 episodes, re-establishing Lansbury as a household name. Before she died a few years ago at the age of 96, we had spoken to Lansbury many times about her distinguished career, and she told us why she felt Murder, She Wrote was the perfect thing for her to do at the perfect time.

In the fall of 1984, CBS found a surprise hit with a show about a retired widow turned best-selling mystery novelist and amateur sleuth. On September 30, 1984, Angela Lansbury’s Jessica Fletcher began her reign as TV’s premier amateur detective, making “Murder, She Wrote” a top 10 show for much of its 12-year run. Created by Richard Levinson and William Link, the minds behind the successful “Columbo” series, and Peter S. Fischer, “Murder She Wrote” was both a throwback to popular whodunnit series of the past and a groundbreaking series that ushered in a new era of representation for middle-aged women on TV.
After Jean Stapleton declined the role, Lansbury signed on to play J.B. Fletcher, over a decade after playing Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple in “The Mirror Crack’d” (1980). A full-time TV series was new territory for the 58-year-old, a four-time Tony winner (at the time) and thrice-time Oscar-nominated veteran actress.

The late great Peter Falk was born on September 16, 1927, and his detective drama “Columbo” is as timeless as it is entertaining. In the whole of television history, few actors have been as identified with a single character than was Falk with Lieutenant Columbo, the eccentric, rumpled, cigar-chomping, trench coat-clad, implausibly wily Los Angeles Police Department homicide detective who always got his man. In the process, Falk and the producers revolutionized what a cop show could be.
It’s been more than a half-century since Falk began portraying the world’s favorite lieutenant as part of the rotating “NBC Mystery Movie” franchise on September 15, 1971. It would grow to become a global phenomenon originally across eight seasons (1971-78), then again sporadically from 1989 to 2003. The series itself would win 13 Emmys..

Elsbeth stands out because it is one of the only lighthearted mysteries on television, but it never used to be that way.
These types of mysteries were extremely popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Murder She Wrote, Diagnosis: Murder, and Matlock were all top-rated shows, and that trend continued into the early 2000s when Monk and Psych captivated viewers.
Modern television is more likely to feature realistic, gritty police procedurals than lighthearted mysteries, but Elsbeth’s success suggests the tide could be turning back again.

TV has always loved a murder mystery. From news headlines that preceded the true crime boom to the heydays of “Poirot” and “Murder, She Wrote,” audiences have always been drawn in by sinister theories — and the often squeamish truth. There’s a morbid fascination with the minds of criminals but also a basic human desire to answer questions, find logic, and make sense of a senseless world.

Over the course of a screen acting career that stretched across fifty years, Charles Cyphers racked up 100 credits, but he’s best known for his collaborations with John Carpenter, having appeared in the director’s Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, Someone’s Watching Me!, Elvis, The Fog, and Escape from New York. His most popular character was Sheriff Leigh Brackett from the 1978 Halloween, a role he reprised in 1981’s Halloween II and, after a forty year absence from the Halloween franchise, 2021’s Halloween Kills. Sadly, we’ve lost this great character actor, as Variety reports that Cyphers has passed away “from a brief illness” at the age of 85.
Cyphers’ manager Chris Roe confirmed his passing to Variety and provided the following statement: “Charles was a lovable and sensitive man. He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you. He was a close friend and...

There’s always been something about Only Murders in the Building that’s felt vaguely familiar — and not just because it stars the superior two-thirds of the Three Amigos.
This sounds kind of crazy, and it probably is, but the popular Hulu series isn’t so dissimilar from one of the beloved horror movie franchises of all-time: Scream, but repackaged as a cozy mystery show that plays well with Boomers who loved Murder, She Wrote and had never heard of Selena Gomez before.
Think about it: Both center around a trio of (eventual) friends who are tasked with solving whodunnits on a semi-regular basis. And the first season’s twist (spoiler alert) was not unlike the ending of the first Scream, revealing that the protagonist’s significant other was really the killer.
While that may be a pretty broad point of comparison, the varying settings of the ensuing seasons have...

Heartbreak comes frequently for Friday the 13th fans. The franchise has had a rough ride over the last couple decades, getting bogged down in legal issues and creative false stars. We get a video game, then the rug is pulled out from under it when it’s just getting started. A movie almost happens, then gets scrapped just weeks before filming was scheduled to begin. The Crystal Lake TV show was just a couple months from filming, then the showrunner gets fired. But worse than all of that is the fact that we’re in a time when actors from our beloved films are passing away very often. Just last month, we lost Erich Anderson, who was in the cast of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. Now Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI director Tom McLoughlin has broken the news that Whitney Rydbeck, who played the ill-fated paintball player Roy in his film,...

We’ve learned the sad news this week that actor Whitney Rydbeck, who played a brief but memorable role in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, has passed away at the age of 79.
Jason Lives director Tom McLoughlin said in a statement to Bloody Disgusting, “I’m heartbroken to share this past Monday night we lost the wonderfully talented physical comedian/actor Whitney Rydbeck. He played Roy the nerdy businessman/paintball player. His comic performance is still making audiences and fans laugh almost 40 years later.”
“I have worked with Whitney for over 53 years,” McLoughlin’s statement continues. “We’ve collaborated on so many projects together. Some as comic partners on stage and film, others on projects I wrote and directed. I specifically wrote the Roy part in Jason Lives for him knowing his unique talent. We also became close friends over these past decades.

Political films have been a staple of American entertainment since the very beginning. Our photo gallery features 15 of the best movies that have put a spotlight on candidates, elections and the process of voting.
The earliest film in our gallery is “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” the 1939 movie directed by Frank Capra. James Stewart starred as a newly-appointed U.S. Senator who is thought to be easily manipulated by the political bosses.
Long before her kindly role as mystery writer Jessica Fletcher on “Murder, She Wrote,” Angela Lansbury received an Oscar nomination for her role as an evil mother in “The Manchurian Candidate” (1962). She is a right-winger who allows her son to be brainwashed into becoming an assassin.
Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman have each appeared in two of the films in our gallery. They starred together as journalists taking down the White House in “All the President’s Men” (1976). Four years earlier,...

"Wkrp in Cincinnati" may not be easy to find on streaming these days, but it's still a highlight in sitcom history. The show about a failing radio station run by a groovy and eccentric team was a hit in the '70s, garnering 10 Emmy nominations and the coveted Humanitas Prize before signing off after four seasons. Unfortunately, the show's heavy emphasis on popular music has made it a rare quantity today: according to MTV, the show didn't make it to DVD until 2007 in part because it was tricky to secure the rights to all of the songs featured in its original run. It's currently only available digitally if you buy it on Apple TV, and versions of the show available today are still reportedly missing some songs, with stock music added in their place.
Still, the ultra-'70s show is worth seeking out for comedy fans and music fans alike,...

“I would say I wanted to do a gay version of Clue, but Clue is the gayest thing ever,” writer Ted Malawer jokes about his new scripted podcast Does This Murder Make Me Look Gay?! “So, I would just say a gayer, queerer version of Clue.”
Malawer, along with cast members Michael Urie, Cheyenne Jackson, Frankie Grande and Nathan Lee Graham, can’t contain their seemingly genuine love for the scripted podcast on a Monday afternoon Zoom.
Hailing from Ninth Planet Audio and iHeartMedia’s Outspoken Podcast Network, the podcast chronicles the life and death of a fictional D-list movie director Vandy Monroe III (Jonathan Freeman).

It's time to face the sad truth: Blue Bloods will end in December 2024.
I'll miss the Reagans terribly, almost as much as if my real family was moving away.
Still, there are eight episodes to go before we say our final goodbyes, and this Blue Bloods character and cast guide honors every member of this wonderful fictional family.
Family Is The Backbone of This Show
Blue Bloods stands out among the ridiculous number of police procedurals on air because of its unique emphasis on family.
That's what makes this series so popular, and millions of people are devastated that CBS won't renew it despite the huge backlash against its cancellation.
Every episode includes a scene at the Sunday dinner table full of laughter and conversation, sometimes beginning with the family saying Grace before the meal, and the Reagans often turn to each other throughout the episode for support.

Quite a few of your favorite television performers have plenty of Emmy Awards on their shelves… Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Allison Janney, Cloris Leachman, Tina Fey. He had a long successful career as an actor—he was on that old show “30 Something”; he was Felicity’s father on “Felicity”; he was killed in a basement in a Friday the 13th movie; he was on Star Trek and dozens of other shows.”
“He was a smart and funny guy, a fantastic cook; he wrote three great novels which you can find on Amazon,” O’Malley continues. “I’ll miss him but his ordeal is over.”
