For the bulk of his career, Leslie Nielsen was best known for his stern, dramatic roles. His tall stature and low voice had casting directors offering him parts as commanders, leaders, and even heavies. Many might recall Nielsen's stone-faced turn in 1956's "Forbidden Planet" as the captain in "The Poseidon Adventure," or playing a cop in the 1972 cop drama "The Bold Ones: The Protectors." In 1977's "Day of the Animals" he plays a manly outdoorsman who loses his mind and, quite darkly, declares insane dominion over animals and women. Some might recall that he can hold his breath a long time, as he declared in "Creepshow." Many will be shocked to witness Nielsen beat and assault Barbra Streisand in the 1987 drama "Nuts."
However, Nielsen did appear in a handful of comedies, most notably, playing Dr. Rumack in the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker farce "Airplane!" The parody proved that he had a talent for deadpan comedy,...

Either because of their catchy rhythm, the popularity of the artist, or a viral dance on social platforms, some anime opening songs have achieved such international popularity that even those who aren't fans of these series can easily recognize its music. The most recent proof of this is found in Google Trends, which revealed its data for 2024 and where anime music wasn't left behind. Because of this, even though fans often debate about the best song of the year’s anime releases, the most popular opening of 2024 already has a clear winner.
Google has compiled a list of the most-searched terms for 2024. In the category of trending songs in search and hum to search, both worldwide and in Japan, an anime song has placed in the top three, beating fan-favorite series like Dandadan and Oshi no Ko, and it is from none other than the hilarious revelation from the Shōnen Jump,...

Creepy Nuts has demonstrated its remarkable ability to elevate anime through its exceptional music, especially its exciting opening tunes. Its contribution to Mashle: Magic and Muscles pushed the anime to the top of Google’s Year in Search 2024. Creepy Nuts consists of a hip-hop duo that has made music for various anime and live series.
Mash in Mashle: Magic and Muscles
Being on the top of the search list is a matter of pride for both Mashle and Creepy Nuts. Not just that, the anime itself secured its spot as the most-searched anime in Japan, and its opening theme, “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born,” played a significant role in this achievement.
The track’s dynamic rhythm and infectious energy have been extremely popular and feel like a perfectly complemented opening for Mashle’s comedic and action-driven story. The song resonated deeply with audiences both in Japan and across the world.

Spotify today released various rankings looking back at 2024 based on this year's listening data, including music and podcasts. For the rankings in Japan this year , Creepy Nuts ' “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born,” featured as the opening theme for the TV anime Mashle: Magic And Muscles The Divine Visionary Candidate Arc, was the most played song in the country. It previously became the fastest song ever by Japanese artists to reach 100 million, 200 million and 300 million streams on the platform, as well as being #1 on Spotify Japan's daily charts for 125 consecutive days from January 18 to May 21, 2024. “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” was also the most-played song by a Japanese artist overseas this year, making it the first song in Spotify history to become the winner in both categories in Japan. As noted in the press release, the song became a viral hit after its debut — particularly in the United States, Central and South America and Spainish-speaking Europe — and reached...

From Nuts in May to Vera Drake and the forthcoming Hard Truths, Leigh’s unique creative process gives us perfectly crafted dramas and characters who feel real
A few years ago I went on a pilgrimage to West Lulworth in Dorset. My wife, Linda, came with me. I stood on the shore beside the geographically fascinating Stair Hole and shouted: “Candice Marie, you are standing on sedimentary limestone!” To which Linda, who had walked up to the top of the cliff, duly replied: “I can’t hear you, Keith.” After which we went to Corfe Castle and had a theatrical row about who got to hold the guidebook before going in search of the dungeons.
To be clear, this was no marital tiff – rather, it was a reenactment of one of our favourite movies, Mike Leigh’s Nuts in May (Internet Archive). The story of a would-be idyllic camping holiday...

It's no surprise that fans adore Dan Da Dan's anime as it has dominated otaku discourse in social media circles due to Science Saru's breathtaking adaptation, but it's also climbing the charts in terms of viewership. On top of the series featuring numerous new additions to Crunchyroll's Fall 2024 anime season, Dan Da Dan is also simulcasting to Netflix weekly, meaning access for viewers across the world's largest paid streaming service. FlixPatrol shows that Dan Da Dan has broken into the #7 spot among Netflix's top 10 most popular TV shows as of October 14, 2024.
This is a major coup for Netflix as it expands its anime presence. With another delightful Fall 2024 Weekly Shonen Jump adaptation, Blue Box, Dan Da Dan shows how seriously impressive and globally popular anime can become. While Crunchyroll remains uncontested as the most popular dedicated anime subscription service, Netflix is paying attention to what the viewers want and reaping the benefits.

We often talk about how the internet has revealed our infinite capacity for cruelty; less discussed is how it’s shown us the limits of our goodness along the way. The human brain evolved in a way that compels us to care about the other people in our villages and tribes for our own survival, but modern technology has transformed the entire planet into an interconnected world town faster than our physiology could ever hope to keep up.
While our hearts might be able to bleed for billions of strangers at a time, our heads are often preoccupied with more local problems, and the 21st century has exacerbated that dissonance to the point that we’re all locked in a near-constant negotiation between empathy and self-concern. You can hardly look at your phone without being confronted by a vast constellation of joy and suffering, as historical atrocities and everyday hardships alike are sandwiched between shitposts,...

Adam West's campy humor remains iconic with "Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb!" Michael Keaton's unhinged delivery with, "You Wanna Get Nuts? C'mon! Let's Get Nuts!" Robert Pattinson's aggressive debut sets the tone with "I'm Vengeance!"

Rumors suggest a new Banjo-Kazooie game may be in the works, potentially announced soon at an Xbox showcase. Leaks from reputable sources hint at a possible return for the iconic duo, sparking excitement among fans. With Microsoft's recent partnership with Toys for Bob, a Banjo-Kazooie reboot or remake could be on the horizon.
Banjo-Kazooie, an iconic video game of yesteryear, may finally be primed to make a grand return as rumors allege a new game in the long-dormant franchise may be in development. The previous installment in the franchise, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, is 16 years old in 2024 and while Rare's beloved collectathon series has inspired numerous spiritual successors since then, there's been no effort to continue the adventures of Banjo and his sidekick. Fortunately, with Microsoft looking to draw players back to Xbox after a tumultuous few months, now might be the perfect time to resurrect the duo.

This past weekend, The Cabot theater in Beverly, Massachusetts hosted an event that was billed as An Evening With Richard Dreyfuss + Jaws Screening – but attendees did not expect what they got from legendary actor Richard Dreyfuss when he took the stage. Most of them probably expected the moderator to lead Dreyfuss on an overview of his amazing career, allowing him to discuss not only Jaws (and set the record straight about whether or not he was a jerk on set) but also films like American Graffiti, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Stand by Me, Stakeout, What About Bob?, or the two that earned him recognition from the Academy: Mr. Holland’s Opus (he earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his performance in the film) and The Goodbye Girl (he won the Best Actor Oscar for that one). In a time when any comment can be taken as being offensive, every public figure has to be careful. Whether you agree with that or not, the situation is like that, and one has to be careful what comes out of their mouth. In light of that, there is a profound confusion when public figures come out and openly do something stupid. And we’re not referring to situations that can be misinterpreted, that can go either way, but about situations when a public figure openly says stupid things and offensive things. How can this happen? Having an opinion is one thing, but being blatantly offensive towards others and slandering them based on their race, gender, religion… why? How?

Barbra Streisand is looking to make the final scene in The Tattooist of Auschwitz memorable and poignant as the credits roll after recording a new song, “Love Will Survive,” for the Peacock and Sky original drama.
Marking her first ever recording for a TV series, Streisand has performed the end title anthem for the series about two young Jewish prisoners in the Nazi concentration camp who fall in love and commit themselves to survive the Holocaust together.
Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve composed the original song for the limited series that stars Harvey Keitel, Melanie Lynskey, Jonah Hauer-King, Anna Próchniak and Jonas Nay, and which Streisand recorded to in part recall the memory of the Holocaust and the specter of antisemitism resurfacing again.

Jump back to 1980. Leslie Nielsen was a character actor known for playing deadpan, ultra-serious roles. He was typically the bad guy of the week on TV shows and TV movies, and his biggest claim to fame was playing the captain in 1956s Forbidden Planet. His career was middling; David Zucker, Jim Abrams and Jerry Zucker, aka Zaz – Zucker-Abrams-Zucker – wanted to cast him in their movie Airplane. He would play the third lead, a deadpan doctor who would perfectly ape similar roles he played in movies like The Poseidon Adventure. While the studio initially balked,...

“Lotería Loca” keeps on bringing the heat with a new “loca” challenge on the CBS game show.
In an exclusive clip of this Monday’s episode shared with TheWrap, host Jaime Camil walks contestant April through selecting a number on the lotería board that will help her chances to score a lotería, while avoiding helping her opponent get the chance to win the $1 million prize.
“Alright April, your turn to give me a number — think about a good number that will give you that car — el coche — because that will give you, April, your first Lotería,” Camil said in the clip. “However, you need to stay away from el arcoiris — the rainbow — because that will give Sairy her second lotería and she will move on to play for $1 million.”

Plot: Dolores Roach is released after an unjust 16-year prison sentence, and she returns to a now-gentrified Washington Heights neighborhood. She reunites with an old stoner friend, Luis, who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is threatened, she must go to extremes to survive.
Review: It is tough to say whether the golden age of television is thriving or ending. With the streaming wars imploding, the depth and breadth of content on the small screen has never been bigger. But, with dozens upon dozens of series, many’s quality seems questionable. The latest series to debut is The Horror of Dolores Roach. A co-production between Amazon Studios and Blumhouse, The Horror of Dolores Roach is an adaptation of the hit podcast of the same name, which, in turn, was an adaptation of a stage play.

Ana Bárbara is celebrating her three decade-long career with her “Bandidos” tour. On Tuesday, the singer announced that she’ll be heading on a tour across the United States, and adding stops in Mexico City and the Dominican Republic.
“This is such a miracle and the exact right time we needed to start the tour,” Bárbara said about heading on the road. “To see young people listening to music, it’s a privilege because it’s the new generations are what are going to support the career of an artist.

Investigating the nature of altruism, director Penny Lane turns the camera on herself in Confessions of a Good Samaritan, showing her process as an organ donor navigating the uncomfortable space of “gifting” a part of your body to a stranger. Single, in her early 40s, and financially secure after a decade of building her career, she decides its time to give back to the universe as a way of saying thank you for life ultimately working out.
For Lane, this is a rare work to proceed in a fairly straightforward manner. Extensive self-interviews frame her donation, which was made before Covid disrupted every industry, and Confessions unpacks the history of donations, including a 1984 decree that outlawed the exchange of money or anything of value for a body part. Though most donations are made to family members in need, online exchanges––similar to a dating website––are an option for those...

Ask the British national treasure – star of Mike Leigh films aplenty, as well as countless TV and stage roles – about any of her brilliant performances by 6pm Sunday
How long can you be a national treasure for? Alison Steadman arguably holds some sort of record: ever since her breakthrough performance in the TV version of Abigail’s Party, back in 1977, she’s been a brilliant, comforting, spiky staple of British screen and stage.
Her collaborations with ex-husband Mike Leigh (she was pregnant with their first son shooting Abigail’s Party) are what defined her early career in the public consciousness. Life is Sweet, Hard Labour, Nuts in May; later the likes of Topsy-Turvy.

Danny Dyer has discussed his controversial column in Zoo magazine, in which he gave such abhorrent dating advice that he was fired from his role as agony uncle.
In 2010, the former EastEnders star was sacked from the publication – which closed in 2015 – for advising a man who couldn’t get over his ex-girlfriend to “cut his ex’s face, then no one will want her”.
There was uproar over the piece at the time, which was ghost-written by a journalist who Dyer was dictating to over the phone, and it has tarnished Dyer’s reputation.
Speaking in a new interview with The Times Magazine, Dyer said: “People still hate me for that.”
He continued: “The line is a quote from a film I’d done, but the idea I would advise someone to do it repulsed me. It was a joke. I don’t know why the editor or sub-editor thought it Ok to print that.

Her government name is Julia Cavazos, and she’s of Puerto Rican and Mexican descent on her father’s side. And on her new single, “Only One” — a breezy...

RespectAbility will have a heavy presence at Sundance this year, with a lineup of virtual panels and discussions, all on digital Main Street.
The disability advocacy group is presenting five conversations under the umbrella title the Accessibility & Inclusion Lab; two of the events are in collaboration with Film Independent.
A goal is to encourage authentic representation of disabled people on screen, and to help change how audiences view people with disabilities. Another goal is to give filmmakers the tools to make films more accessible, both for disabled crew members and for audiences.
According to Nielsen, the disability market influences more than a trillion dollars in disposable income. However, with one-in-five people in the U.S. having a disability, there is a startling lack of representation – just 2.3% of characters in the 100 top-grossing films of 2019 and 8% in family films.
