Alright kids, put down your TikToks and your Roblox and your [checks notes] Skibidi Toilets. It’s time for a history lesson, because “Moana 2” isn’t just a movie. It’s a throwback to a long-lost historical era when sequels usually sucked. Why we’d want to throw back to that I have no idea, but I guess everything old is new again and Disney is, if nothing else, a nostalgia factory.
There was a time when saying “sequels suck” wasn’t just pessimistic, it was stating a statistical average. There were always noteworthy exceptions but for most of the 20th century, follow-ups to great and/or popular movies were usually less great and less popular. Often they were just shameless excuses to crank a few extra dollars out of the audience, so they fell into obscurity quickly. “Three Men and a Little Lady” did not do justice to “Three Men and a Baby.

Before sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory and F.R.I.E.N.D.S ruled the airwaves, there was Cheers. The Ted Danson starrer centered around a former relief pitcher and bartender Sam Malone and the relationship he shares with the patrons and employees of his bar. The show was one of the highest-rated shows and its finale had record viewership at the time.
Danson earned big for his lead role in the series. The veteran star is now a lead in various series such as The Good Place, Becker, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Mr. Mayor. However, he hit his peak when he was starring in the sitcom and reportedly earns millions even now in residuals.

List of targets? Check. Bullets? Check. Diapers? Check? You heard me. Lionsgate is loading up on formula and onesies for the action comedy spec Three Hitmen and a Baby. The newly-announced project comes from Dave Matalon (Totally Killer) and Matt Altman (Red Widow). While the title is obviously a play on the 1987 comedy Three Men and Baby, plot details remain elusive. However, the talent behind the film is not. Kelly McCormack and David Leitch will produce through their 87North studio, which bodes well for this curious production.
In Three Men and a Baby, three bachelors have their worlds rocked when a mysterious baby arrives on their doorstep. With almost no experience, the trio must put their one-night-stand lifestyle on hold to ensure the child’s safety, learning valuable lessons about parenthood and themselves. The laugh-out-loud comedy got a sequel in 1990 called Three Men and a Little Lady, which finds the...

Exclusive: Lionsgate has snapped up rights to Three Hitmen and a Baby, an action comedy spec from Dave Matalon (Totally Killer) and Matt Altman (Red Widow), Deadline can exclusively reveal.
Pic’s logline is being kept under wraps, though its title clearly riffs on the classic 1987 comedy Three Men and a Baby, starring Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, and Ted Danson, about three bachelors whose lives change forever when a baby suddenly appears on their doorstep. Kelly McCormick and David Leitch will produce through their company 87North, for whom Max Jacoby is overseeing the project. Meredith Wieck and Jon Humphrey are overseeing for Lionsgate.
Screenwriter Matalon most recently co-wrote the slasher comedy Totally Killer! for Blumhouse and Amazon, which headlined Prime Video’s Halloween season last year. As we first reported, his sci-fi action script Level Up, also written with Altman, is in development with The Hideaway and Vandal Entertainment.

Everybody loves Ted Danson. Starting with Cheers, he’s been the star of about a dozen different hit shows, in which he’s almost always charming and lovable (even when he plays the devil). Pre-Cheers, however, Danson wasn’t always so likable. In fact, he was mostly the bad guy.
Here are four times Danson was the heel before he was Sam Malone…
4 ‘The Doctors’
Before moving into prime time, Danson spent several years acting in daytime soaps, including this role as a smug know-it-all psychiatrist on The Doctors. In the clip above, he comes off as a flirty creep even when he’s discussing the case of a traumatized kid.
3 ‘Magnum P.I.’
Before Danson and Tom Selleck played two-thirds of the dads in Three Men and a Baby, they squared off in an episode of Magnum P.I. In it, Danson plays a conman trying to bilk an old lady out of her savings.

Thanks to their fictional captain, the original crew of the Starship Enterprise almost didn't get a fond big-screen farewell.
Prior to 1989, the starcrossed "Star Trek" franchise had survived network cancellation and a box office/critical disappointment in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." As such, the brand was unexpectedly in terrific shape coming off three hits in a row in the 1980s with "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock," and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home." For once, it felt like the entire "Star Trek" team was playing with house money. Then William Shatner, having watched Leonard Nimoy take two turns at the helm, which earned him a hugely successful non-"Star Trek" directing effort in "Three Men and a Baby" (the highest grossing film of 1987), decided it was time to strut his stuff behind the camera.

Paul Mazursky's 1986 comedy "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" is a sharp indictment of ultra-moneyed yuppie culture, which was running rampant during the Reagan administration. Culturally speaking, the mid 1980s saw a redoubled effort to enrich the already-wealthy and encourage rich people to become obsessed with conspicuous consumption. Many, many films and TV shows about Beverly Hills were released at this time, delving deep into the cockroach nest where America's wealthy classes gathered and cannibalized each other.
Prominent among these was Mazursky's film about a rich family, the Whitemans, that recently became wealthy thanks to a wire hanger manufacturing empire. The family are all empty and unhappy. Matriarch Barbara (Bette Midler) is attempting to fill her emptiness with increasingly strange renditions of New Age spirituality, while patriarch Dave (Richard Dreyfuss) is filling his own emptiness by having an affair with the family's live-in maid, Carmen (Elizabeth Peña). I once thought the European mind couldn’t comprehend Dinner for Schmucks. I now know how wrong I was.
14 ‘Dinner for Schmucks’ (2010)
The 1998 French film Le Dîner de Cons (“dinner of fools”) won a ton of awards and sparked three different Indian adaptations: 2007’s Hindi-language Bheja Fry, 2008’s Kannada-language Mr. Garagasa and 2010’s Malayalam-language April Fool. The original film is based on a 1999 French play of the same name. When it was still a stage production, the title was often translated in English as The Prat’s Dinner or The Cunt’s Dinner.
13 ‘The Last House on the Left’ (2009)
The 2009 Wes Craven film is a remake of a 1972 Wes Craven film, which in turn was based on the 1960 Swedish film Jungfrukällan (“the virgin spring”). That film was actually based on a 13th-century Scandinavian ballad, “Töres döttrar i Wänge,” a real mindfreak about the tragic origin of a local Swedish church.

The only major film role actress Robin Curtis had before 1984's "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" was playing a minor role in John Irvin's 1981 horror film "Ghost Story." By a weird coincidence, "Ghost Story" also featured actress Alice Krige, who would play a prominent role in 1996's "Star Trek: First Contact." Curtis also appeared in an episode of "Knight Rider" in 1983, and in the salacious TV movies "In Love With an Older Woman" (can a 29-year-old possibly love a 43-year-old?) and "First Affair" (Oh no! I'm in love with my professor!).
So by "The Search for Spock," Curtis was already used to being on set and acting in high-profile studio productions. "Star Trek," however, was the largest project she had worked on yet. The Story: It is the future (like say – 1989). Robots are now commonplace, being used for everything from manual labor to childcare. But, robots go bad and when they do, the LAPD calls in Sgt. Jack R. Ramsay (Tom Selleck), an expert in so-called “Runaways”. When a madman (Gene Simmons) invents a microchip that turns all robots into runaways, Ramsay, and his new partner (Cynthia Rhodes) must put a stop to his evil plan – the fate of the world just may depend on it! Oh, and also Ramsay is afraid of heights. Trust me, that’s important.
The Players: Starring: Tom Selleck, Cynthia Rhodes, Kirstie Alley, G. W. Bailey and Gene Simmons. Written and directed by Michael Crichton.
The History: While most famous for his novels, Michael Crichton actually had a decent Hollywood career as a director, having a couple of solid hits under his belt by the time 1984 rolled around.

After defining goofy millennial aimlessness with her beloved sitcom Broad City, the writer-actor is facing up to motherhood with new film Babes. But don’t worry: she hasn’t grown up too much
Ilana Glazer is trying to think of films about pregnancy and early parenthood that aren’t told from a man’s perspective. “There’s Knocked Up, but that’s about Seth Rogen. And there’s Nine Months, but that’s about Hugh Grant. Three Men and a Baby cracks me up because it’s like, three?!” says the 37-year-old, with comically perfect levels of incredulity (cracking me up in the process).
Glazer – best known as co-creator of the seminal millennial sitcom Broad City – is making a serious point: there are outrageously few movies about birth and babies that centre on the female experience. The comedian’s attempt to rectify this, however, has taken the form of a distinctly unserious film: in fact,...

At the end of Nicholas Meyer's 1991 film "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," the U.S.S. Enterprise-a is ordered back to Starfleet headquarters ... to be decommissioned. This was, the crew finally realized, their final, final adventure as a crew, and the road had come to an end. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), however, gave the perfect response "If I were human," he said, "I believe my response would be: 'Go to Hell.'" He then added, hastily, "If I were human."
I can only hear Nimoy's reading of "Go to Hell" when thinking about his non-participation in "Star Trek: Generations" in 1994. "Generations," as most Trekkies might tell you, is a notably weak film, presenting a rushed jumble of ideas without much drama or profundity. The plot follows a free-floating space ribbon called the Nexus, which blows up starships but also sucks survivors essentially into Heaven, a parallel dimension of pure...

Leonard Nimoy is a legendary Hollywood actor who enjoyed a plethora of major roles in the industry during his career. However, not one of them comes close to his iconic rendition of Spock in the Star Trek saga.
Leonard Nimoy as Spock in the Star Trek franchise | Paramount Pictures
A role that he took up for the first time ever during the 1979 motion picture, Nimoy became synonymous with the half-human, half-Vulcan character with pointed years. At the same time, Spock had his fair share of naysayers when he was first sought to be introduced in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
So much so that Nimoy was told by network executives that they would either have to change the appearance of the character, or simply do away with him!

Actor Leonard Nimoy was known for his role as Spock in the original Star Trek. The actor played the role for three seasons in the show and even reprised his role for the original films featuring the same cast. He also had a cameo as Elder Spock in J.J. Abrams’ reboot Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness.
As a filmmaker, Nimoy is known for helming the classic Three Men and a Baby. However, he made his debut with the third Star Trek film The Search for Spock. While the actor’s new position made it awkward for the rest of the cast, Nimoy also reportedly respectfully insulted the directors of the first two films while pitching himself for the job.

We’re back to BOOsics on this week’s episode of Nightmare on Film Street, talking about horny ghosts, drunk vacationers, and Jennifer Tilly! Join your horror hosts Jon & Kim as they sit down for a sober discussion about the ins and outs of having sex with a ghost, as depicted in the unsurprisingly underseen 80s sex comedy High Spirits (1988).

Who is the greatest anime director of all time? One name that cinephiles won't let be forgotten (nor should they) is Satoshi Kon. A surrealist who always tied his imagination to a strong character or theme, only Kon could make the movies he chose to in the way he made them.
His "hyper-real" style of animation is the core of his filmmaking philosophy; animation can tell the same stories that live-action movies can, but shouldn't try to emulate how those movies tell them. He also understood how the greatest advantage animation has is editing; since the images are drawn, not blocked and framed, it's all the easier for scene after expressive scene to flow into one another.
Kon's influence on international filmmakers (particularly "Perfect Blue" obsessive Darren Aronofsky) is undeniable. Tragically, Kon died in 2010 at the age of 46, cutting that influence (and his in-development projects like "The Dream Machine") short.

One of the most legendary pieces of an iconic role almost going to a different actor is when Tom Selleck was initially offered the lead as Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. He famously nailed his audition (which you can watch here) and was offered the part. However, he had just shot the pilot for Magnum P.I. and when that show was picked up, his opportunity to play the whip-wielding archeologist slipped through his fingers. He eventually got to star in his own period adventure movie in 1983, High Road to China, which is a bit of an unseen gem.
Selleck, who’s never had particularly sour grapes over the casting, writes about his shot at playing Indy in detail in his new memoir, “You Never Know:, lavishing praise on Spielberg, Lucas, Ford, and overall proving to be a good sport about the whole affair. Yet, one thing...

Los Angeles, April 21 (Ians) Remember ladies going gaga over Tom Selleck’s signature moustache in ‘Friends’? Well, one day, the 79-year-old actor decided to bid farewell to his signature facial hair for his role in the show ‘Blue Bloods’.
The actor revealed that he initially chose to shave off his moustache to embody the character of police commissioner Frank Reagan on the show, which is currently airing its final season, reports ‘People’ magazine.
Talking about the role, Tom told ‘People’: “At the time, they had him as the New York City police chief. That’s not the boss in New York, the way it’s structured. And I said, ‘Well, I don’t think they can have moustaches, so I’ll shave off my moustache’. And (executive producer) Leonard (Goldberg) said, ‘Let me check with CBS’. And they said no.”

Paramount Pictures had good reason to believe Adrian Lyne's "Fatal Attraction" would be another box office smash for the hit-making studio (which had just dominated 1986 with five of the ten highest-grossing movies of that year — including the top two in "Top Gun" and "Crocodile Dundee"), but they couldn't have anticipated the film becoming a full-blown, adult-skewing blockbuster. Nevertheless, the erotic thriller about an extramarital fling that turns into a waking nightmare for the happily married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) outperformed such heavy hitters as "Beverly Hills Cop II," "The Untouchables," and "Lethal Weapon" to become the second highest-grossing film of 1987 (behind the four-quadrant behemoth "Three Men and a Baby").
Why was the film such a pop cultural sensation? Every single element clicked perfectly into place. Lyne brought the sensual heat, James Dearden's screenplay tightened the screws with nerve-jangling precision, and the stars absolutely smoldered. Douglas and Glenn Close...

Tom Selleck is one of the most well-known television actors in Hollywood at present. A decorated thespian, Selleck has an arms-length list of accolades to his name. He has appeared in several popular shows, such as the long-running Blue Bloods and Magnum, P.I., playing the titular character, for which he received several Emmy Award nominations. Given Selleck’s standing in the television industry, he is also one of the richest actors around.
Tom Selleck‘s acting genius is not just limited to television, though. He has also acted in movies, such as Three Men and a Baby (1987) and its sequel, Three Men and a Lady (1990), where he played the bachelor architect, Peter Mitchell. "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" is not everyone's favorite movie in the franchise, but it is an important one. Not only did it revive Spock after the events of the much-beloved "Wrath of Khan," but it also was an important first as Leonard Nimoy stepped behind the camera to direct the film as well. Before that, Nimoy had only directed select episodes of TV shows like "Night Gallery." But this was his feature directorial debut, and fittingly, it was within the franchise that made him famous. However, it did create a bit of awkward tension with his friend and co-star, William Shatner, who had starred as Captain Kirk since the beginning of the original series.
Nimoy and Shatner had worked together for nearly 20 years by the time the 1984 film rolled around. But with Nimoy behind the camera, the power dynamic was about to change in a meaningful way.

Speculation about a new movie titled Three Granddads and a Baby has gone viral, making some question if the film is real or fake.
It has been quite some time since fans heard from Disney's Three Men franchise, with the duo of Tom Selleck-led comedies (Three Men and a Baby and Three Men and a Little Lady) being remembered fondly nearly 40 years after their release.
There has been talk of a reboot in recent years, but nothing concrete has come of it as of yet.

Have we finally reached peak blockbuster running time? In the last year alone, the space has been flooded with kidney-testing lengths — “Killers of the Flower Moon” (206 minutes and no intermissions allowed!), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (192 minutes), “Oppenheimer” (180 minutes), “John Wick: Chapter 4” and “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (both 169 minutes), and “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1” (163 minutes) — but there are some signs that this particular worm has turned.
The most significant example is this week’s release of “The Marvels” (Disney), which is the shortest film in MCU history at “only” 105 minutes. “Avengers: Endgame,” MCU’s biggest hit, clocked in at 181 minutes. The four most recent MCU franchise entries were 126 minutes or fewer, with “Thor: Love and Thunder” under two hours. In all, eight MCU films were less than two hours, which makes the difference a matter of degree.

One of the coolest guys of the eighties was Tom Selleck, and everyone absolutely loved him playing the laid-back Thomas Magnum on the classic series Magnum, P.I. Running from 1980 to 1988; the show proved to be a mixed blessing for its star, as Selleck had auditioned to play Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark and was actually chosen to play the part. He had to pass because he had already shot the pilot for Magnum, P.I., and the network wouldn’t let him out of his contract.
While passing up the opportunity to play the whip-wielding archeologist must have stung, Magnum P.I. ran for eight years and was one of the biggest shows of the decade. Selleck became a household name and parlayed his success on the show into a series of film roles (including Best Movie You Never Saw fave Runaway), culminating with the release of Three Men and a Baby,...

In 1989, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier disappointed the box office. Reeling from bad reviews, the film only grossed $49 million domestically from a $33 million budget. That’s a worrying figure for a franchise considering that the previous movie, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, had made a huge $133 million. It likely eventually eked out a profit, but it did badly enough that the studio was looking to reboot the series without any of the original stars by making a Starlet Academy movie. Harve Bennett, the producer of all the films since Star Trek II, thought this would be the way to continue the crew’s big-screen adventures, but Paramount thought differently. With Star Trek: The Next Generation picking up momentum on TV, it became clear that Captain Picard and company would eventually move to the big screen, but, given that the franchise’s 25th anniversary was right around the corner,...

There’s this theory out there that annoys most Trekkies, being that, of the films, only the even-numbered entries are good. This stems mainly from the fact that everyone remembers Star Trek V: The Final Frontier as being the worst movie of the series and ignores that Star Trek: The Motion Picture – while divisive – was a hit, and so was The Search for Spock. However, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is indeed a bad Star Trek movie, and in this episode of Revisited, we’re going to look at exactly what went wrong with something that was clearly a passion project for its star and director, William Shatner.
Jump back to 1986, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was a significant hit. It was the highest-grossing movie in the franchise and earned critical raves. People that didn’t even like Star Trek were down with this earth-bound adventure of the crew of the U.
