Acting is one of the highest-paying jobs in the film industry and when one is a star, they can command salaries in the millions. Many actors have increased their net worth to hundreds of millions due to their increased salaries. However, some have also fumbled and reduced their worth by spending lavishly.
From A-listers to reality TV stars, many have been vocal about their poor financial decisions, to the point where some have even declared bankruptcy. While some actors attributed it to spending more than their income, some just made poor spending decisions that ended up biting them back. Here are 10 Hollywood actors who went broke for dumb reasons.
1. Nicolas Cage

The 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel "It" may be best known for Tim Curry's performance as Pennywise, who made an entire generation seriously terrified of clowns, but it would be nothing without the heart and soul of the Loser's Club. In the 1950s, a group of misfit kids growing up in Derry, Maine are brought together, partially because they don't belong anywhere else, but also because they happen to be targeted by the malevolent force that haunts their town, stealing and murdering its local children. Together, they have to face off against Pennywise to stop the killing once and for all. That's what they think, anyway. But despite defeating Pennywise as children, they're forced to return to Derry as adults and once again confront the terrors of their youth.
As a result of this, "It" has an interesting casting dilemma of finding not only seven...

Jonathan Reynolds, a playwright and screenwriter whose string of film credits in the 1980s included the comedies Micki & Maude, Switching Channels, My Stepmother Is an Alien and the notorious flop Leonard Part 6, died Oct. 27 of organ failure at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, N.J. He was 79.
His death was announced by family to The New York Times.
A prolific Off Broadway playwright, Reynolds stage works included the acclaimed 1982 Hollywood satire Geniuses, produced by Playwrights Horizons and based on the journals Reynolds wrote during his three months on location in the Philippines to observe the infamously difficult filming of Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now.
An intended book about the making of the film never made it to print, but his satirical play was a hit with both audiences and critics. And Reynolds would have an even more lasting connection to Apocalypse Now: He contributed, uncredited, a line of...

Class of 88: When Willow Met Oz – A Look Back at the Lovable Sci-Fi Comedy My Stepmother Is An Alien
The ’80s genre film scene had been invaded by aliens. From sci-fi horror fare like the Alien franchise and The Thing to lighter family-friendly takes like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Batteries Not Included, aliens seemed to be hovering over movie theaters throughout the decade, and 1988 was no different. One of the more under-appreciated gems from the Class of ’88 was Richard Benjamin’s My Stepmother Is An Alien, starring Dan Aykroyd, Kim Basinger, Jon Lovitz, and Alyson Hannigan in her first major film role—a role that would lead to Hannigan meeting Seth Green for the very first time (a swoon-worthy trivia tidbit for Buffy geeks like myself).
But, back to aliens.
Basinger plays Celeste, a gorgeous extraterrestrial sent on a mission to Earth to find out the source of a radio wave that sent ripples throughout her home planet and disrupted its gravity. The source is, of course, Aykroyd’s Steven Mills,...

Few people left a mark on every facet of pop culture quite like Prince, the legendary artist who passed away today at age 57 of currently unknown causes. Most may think of him first and foremost as a musician, but some of our favorite movies simply would not be the same were it not for Prince. His iconic songs have infiltrated countless soundtracks since the early 1980s, from silly family movies like My Stepmother Is an Alien to romantic comedies like Pretty Woman and even modern action movies like The Equalizer. Tim Burton's Batman movie would not be quite as weird and quite as memorable were it not for Prince, whose music for Jack Nicholson's Joker often became the perfect, colorful bow that tied that character together on the big screen. And then of course...

Born on the 24th March 1974 (making her forty years old, can you believe that?!), in Washington D.C., Alyson Hannigan is the daughter (and only child) of Emilie Haas, a Jewish real estate agent, and Al Hannigan, a truck driver with Irish ancestry. Her parents divorced when she was just two years old and she was brought up by her mother in Atlanta, Georgia as a result.
Hannigan began performing very early – even as a baby she appeared in photoshoots and an instructional video for parenting – and started appearing in commercials when she was just four years old.
After a handful of minor television jobs, she made her first major film appearance in 1988’s My Stepmother Is An Alien, in which she starred alongside the likes of Kim Basinger, Dan Aykroyd and Seth Green – the latter whom played her boyfriend, just like he would go on to do...

We've got a delightful short animated trailer for you to check out today that was made to promote some of our favorite classic 1980s sci-fi films. It was created by Francesco Baiocchi for the European sci-fi cable channel Axn. It was done in the style of a '80s side-scrolling video game, and some of the films that are featured in the promo include Ghostbusters II, The NeverEnding Story, Short Circuit, and even My Stepmother Is an Alien. The result is pretty radical.
Remember the '80s? Remember those amazing Arcade video games? As we had to create a weekly stunt to promote different movies from the 80s' we decided to celebrate that fabulous decade using one of its most recognizable look and design.

Even though it makes up a major plot point (actually pretty much the plot) of Lucy, the myth that you only use 10 percent of your brain has been pretty thoroughly debunked.
But for whatever reason, mostly because Hollywood doesn’t really need to pay attention to science, this pseudo-science, with varying numbers tacked on, still appears throughout film and television. The possible outcomes of using the other 90 percent, however, differ between cases. There are the standard examples, like Lucy and Limitless, which promise intelligence-related superpowers. Others, like Seinfeld and Honey I Shrunk the Kids (the TV version, natch), just promise intelligence.

Scarlett Johansson gives a breathtaking performance as an alien femme fatale in Jonathan Glazer's mesmerising new movie Under the Skin.
Johansson's unnamed character inhabits the body of a young woman in order to lure male hitchhikers to their deaths, as she travels around Glasgow in her white transit van.
The silver screen has a long tradition of both spine-tingling and silly sci-fi seductresses, so prepare to be charmed by a few of our favourites below:

Shirley Kilpatrick played a beautiful yet highly-radioactive alien who lands on earth after accidentally crashing her spaceship. Unbeknownst to her, she's capable of killing with the touch of her delicate, bare hands, and begins stalking and unwittingly harming humans around her.

Though she's known these days as the sweet and innocent Lily on the CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother," Alyson Hannigan's biggest contribution to pop culture is indisputably her role as the sweet and not-so-innocent Michelle Flaherty in the "American Pie" franchise.
Her character's big reveal at the climax of the classic 1999 teen comedy, in which the audience's (and protagonist Jim's) perception of her goes from tame to over-the-top with one unforgettable "band camp" story, is a scene that has achieved near mythic status among millennial moviegoers, and we've all got a special place in our hearts for her because of it. However, Hannigan's very first starring role came more than a decade before she rocked Jason Biggs' world, in the sci-fi comedy "My Stepmother Is an Alien."

With "Midnight in Paris," Woody Allen's comic look at nostalgia and its limitations, having earned four Oscar nominations last week (including nods for Best Picture, Allen's direction and his original screenplay), it's a good time to take a look back at Allen's 1987 comedy "Radio Days." Another comic take on nostalgia, "Radio Days" is now officially a golden oldie itself, having been released exactly 25 years ago, on January 30, 1987. A fond look, filtered through memory, of a 1940s New York childhood, the radio broadcasts that captivated audiences back then, and the behind-the-scenes gossip about the performers who voiced them, "Radio Days" may be best known today for launching the career of Seth Green -- then a 12-year-old who played the Allen-like narrator as a boy. But there's also a wealth of little-known true stories behind the film, some of them from Allen's own life, some from classic radio lore, and some...

It feels like Dan Aykroyd hasn’t been around for a while, but that’s only because I refused to see Yogi Bear, barely noticed him as the Vice President in War, Inc. and refused (again) to see I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. So he hasn’t been retired or anything, but it’s sure felt like it. Nevertheless, he’ll be coming out of that non-retirement for Dog Fight, the political comedy starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as two South Carolinians who have their sights on the presidency. According to Movie Hole, the Oscar nominated actor is on board, but the role isn’t specified. Hopefully this won’t further delay that certain, ghost-bustin’ sequel Aykroyd has been steadily working on. I’m speaking, of course, about My Stepmother is an Alien 2. The capable Jay Roach is directing a script from Chris Henchy (The Other Guys, and...

The successful Twilight franchise begins its victory lap with the upcoming release of the first of two Breaking Dawn movies, and whether you love or hate these sparkly-boy-meets-lip-biting-girl romances, the idea of a human falling in love with a non-human creature has a rich and varied history at the movies. (Although with rare exceptions like My Stepmother is an Alien, such films are almost always about female homo sapiens falling for men of a completely different species, which is no doubt fodder for someone's doctoral thesis.) Here's a list of some classic movies about pretty ladies and the strange creatures who love them; tell us your favorite girl-and-ghoul flicks in the comments section.

Digging into Seth Green's past work is like chowing down on a cornucopia of awesomeness. Perhaps you remember him mocking Patrick Dempsey for his card nights of chips, dips and dorks in 'Can't Buy Me Love,' or how he loved the Willow well before Buffy in 'My Stepmother Is an Alien,' or maybe you fell for his ultra-sweet ultra-mullet as a fan of Happy Harry Hard On in 'Pump Up the Volume.'
Though Green started working in 1984 with a slew of bit parts, his big break didn't come until May of 1997 when he played Scott Evil in 'Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery' ... or so we thought. If you're familiar with the Rally's fast food chain, you know better.

He was one of George Lucas’s original team of F/X wizards who in 1978 took home an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects (which he shared with John Dykstra) for his work on R2-D2 and all those wonderful creatures from the 1977 Star Wars. (In addition to his work as chief modelmaker for the groundbreaking film, he also appeared as a Death Star Gunner.) Grant McCune died of complications from cancer on Monday. He was 67. Described as a "quiet but crucial" innovator who specialized in models and miniatures, Grant McCune was one of Hollywood's best known special and visual effects artists pumping out designs for over 100 films, spanning decades of sci-fi and action classics, from Star Trek: The Motion Picture to Ghostbusters II to Speed to Batman Forever to Spider-Man 2. McCune worked as miniature supervisor for Apogee Inc. on Star Trek: The Motion Picture and received an Academy...

Craig here with Take Three. Today: Kim Basinger
Bay•sing•er
I think it’s time again to give Kim Basinger (remember, it's Bay-singer, not Bah-sinjahr, folks) some major credit. The lady's due. She’s gone from supporting eighties female through a love-hate (but Oscar-nabbing) nineties to her current career bloom as a character actress of some depth. Ms Basinger has always quietly impressed me. Here are three reasons why.
Take One: She loooovves purple.
Basinger’s career was birthed alongside the eighties. Feisty ladies in adventurous circumstances were her trade back then. Although through either slip-ups or fate she was often eclipsed by her male co-stars. In Never Say Never Again, The Man Who Loved Women, The Natural, Fool for Love, 9½ Weeks, No Mercy, Blind Date and Nadine she played second-fiddle female to, respectively, Connery, Reynolds, Redford, Shepard, Rourke, Gere, Willis and Bridges. These regulars of male-patterned eighties flicks...

Scarlett Johansson ("The Island", "Iron Man 2") will star as an alien in the sci-fi feature "Under The Skin" for FilmNation according to Heat Vision Blog. Based on a novel by Michael Faber, Johansson plays an alien disguised as an aesthetically perfect woman who scours remote highways using her voracious sexuality to snare human prey. She soon begins to develop feelings of humanity which soon puts her in the firing line with her own people. Think "Species" meets "My Stepmother Is An Alien". Jonathan Glazer ("Sexy Beast") directs from a script he co-wrote with 'Walter Campbell. Nick Wechsler and James Wilson will produce, and shooting kicks off in the Spring....
