More than a quarter of a century after its release, Galaxy Questremains among the gold standards in space sci-fi parody films. Starring Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, and Sigourney Weaver, the movie that follows the cast of a 1970s space TV show who become heroes of the galaxy, is by some considered a bit of a love letter to the Star Trekfranchise.
During a panel at the Indiana Comic Convention, Collider’s Steve Weintraub asked some Star Trek: The Next Generation alums what they thought of 1999’s Galaxy Quest.
“It’s perfect. It perfectly captures the essence (of Star Trek) with love and humor and intelligence…it’s so well-crafted,” said Denise Crosby, who played Lieutenant Tasha Yar in the first season of Tng and the Season 3 episode, “Yesterday’s Enterprise.”

When it comes to authors who have had their works adapted into major feature films, Stephen King has few equals. 1976's Carrie from director Brian De Palma marks the first of the author's works to get the big-screen treatment, and it paved the way for dozens more in the decades that followed. Stanbley Kubrick's The Shining was released in 1980 and now stands as one of the most iconic and beloved adaptations of King's work, even if the author himself infamously doesn't care for it.
Rob Reiner's Stand By Me hit theaters in 1986, marking the first non-horror King adaptation. It would ultimately be followed by movies like The Running Man (1987), Misery (1990), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), and The Green Mile (1999). More than two decades later, new King movies continue to release at a regular cadence, including titles like Gerald's Game (2017), Pet Sematary (2019), Mr. Harrigan's Phone (2022), The Boogeyman (2023), and Salem's Lot (2024). Most filmgoers recognize big cities like Miami, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles in their favorite motion pictures. Sure enough, those locals provide the backdrop to several classic pictures from Michael Bay's "Bad Boys" to "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "King Kong" and Michael Mann's "Heat." However, another prominent locale exists in the film world, a place you've likely seen more often than not, even if it didn't immediately stand out. We're talking, of course, about the state of Maine.
Uniquely, many stories take place in the Pine Tree State. Its lush scenery and coastal views make for stunning cinematography, while the colder elements provide the necessary bleakness for heavier dramas. Here, family friendly fare like "Casper" and "Pete's Dragon" took flight, while more intense films such as the alligator thriller "Lake Placid" and the Stephen King horror tale "Pet Sematary" found unique ways to scare the bejesus out of audiences.

In 1982, Stephen King published Different Seasons, an anthology of brooding dramas that explored humanity's darker impulses — and the most disturbing of the four is Apt Pupil. This late-1970s story of an American teenager's involvement with a Nazi war criminal hit the big screen in 1998, but both versions strangely forecast the dark cultural changes inaugurated by the Columbine shooting in 1999.
The protagonist of Apt Pupil is a seemingly wholesome teen whose fascist fantasies turn him into a killer. The written story concludes with a crime that has become sadly common in recent years; the film's ending is less violent, but in some ways much darker. Both versions are strangely prescient about far-right trends in modern youth culture, and even fans familiar with Stephen King's novella may find that the story has a very different impact today.

Arrow has revealed an electrifying new slate of films for March, delivering a mix of cult horror, psychological terror, and classic genre cinema. Films include chilling haunted house tales to a remastered giallo masterpiece, this month’s collection promises an unmissable selection for horror and cult film devotees.
The month kicks off on 3 March with Play It Cool, a long-lost Japanese drama that delves into the seedy underworld of Tokyo’s nightclub culture. Directed by Yasuz? Masumura, the film is a bold and stylish exploration of power, gender, and survival in a world dominated by men.
Following that, on 10 March, I Will Never Leave You Alone makes its exclusive debut on Arrow. This eerie, psychological horror from Dw Medoff offers a fresh take on the haunted house formula, weaving supernatural terror with a deeply unsettling sense of psychological unease. A descent into trauma and paranoia, the film has been described...

When it comes to modern horror, few creators compare to Stephen King. As one of the most frequently-adapted authors in history, his popular stories have been transformed into some of the most successful genre films out there. However, they can't all be masterpieces, and many of them don't live up to their strong starts. This list contains ten of the best Stephen King films that just couldn't stick the landing.
Each of these famous adaptations, sequels, prequels, and remakes has something to offer, but their conclusions hold them back from greatness. Sometimes it's the filmmaker's mistake, some endings have just aged poorly, and sometimes fans must accept that even Stephen King is fallible. This list of flawed but fascinating films helps illuminate what makes a great story, and how easy it is to fall short of perfection — even for the master.

Let’s be honest Longlegs was a disappointment. Although it did contain a great central performance from Maika Monroe, it’s supernatural storyline owed much too much to many far better films. Added to this, the marketing campaign – which hyped it beyond belief – set audience expectations far higher than anyone could achieve.
That said, the film did extremely well at cinemas across the land, propelling its writer and director into the limelight and as my review said “all we can hope is going forwards, Osgood Perkins uses the new found fame and commercial footing to indulge his more interesting and unconventional horror ideas.”
On the face of it, adapting a Stephen King story is neither interesting nor unconventional. With a career spanning over 50 years, King’s works have been remade by multiple directors inciting fear on screens large and small for centuries, from Carrie to Misery, The Lawnmower Man to The Shawshank Redemption,...

Spoilers for "The Monkey" follow.
"Longlegs" director Osgood Perkins is back with "The Monkey" (you can read our review of the film right here), a blood-soaked horror-comedy based on a short story by the king of horror himself, Stephen King. King is one of our most prolific writers, and a huge chunk of his bibliography has been adapted to the screen. Some of these adaptations, like 1989's "Pet Sematary," which has a screenplay by King himself, remain fairly true to the source material. Then you have takes that veer off into their own directions. King has gone on record as saying he's not particularly upset when film adaptations of his work change things up, telling Vulture: "My idea is, 'If you're going to make changes, hopefully they'll work.'" At the same time, King isn't shy about voicing his displeasure when he feels changes don't work. After all, he's...

Famed horror author Stephen King has returned to X, formerly known as Twitter. The renowned writer was known for taking to the social media site to share his views about everything, from movies and books to current affairs and politics. “Bring Her Back” is almost here.
The sophomore feature from YouTube creators-turned-filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou arrives in theaters this summer courtesy of A24. And the brothers’ follow-up to 2023’s “Talk to Me” looks every bit as blood curdling as their debut. Watch the brand-new trailer below.
The official synopsis reads, simply, “A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.” The brother and sister are played by Billy Barratt and Sora Wong, with the foster mother played by the one and only Sally Hawkins. Other cast members include Jonah Wren Phillips, Sally-Anne Upton, Stephen Phillips and Mischa Heywood.
“Bring Her Back” was written by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman and produced by Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton.
It seems to capture all of the things that made “Talk to Me” so special – the mixture of modernity and ancient evil, from the fresh point-of-view of young people.

The Final Destination franchise has had some ups and downs, and after several sequels of diminishing returns, it looks like the new movie, Final Destination: Bloodlines, will be taking things in a new direction – as a prequel movie partly set in the 1960s. The movie, which is the second horror franchise to use the Bloodlines subtitle after 2024’s Pet Sematary prequel, is preparing to release its first trailer, which makes sense considering the film’s planned release date of May 16, 2025.
An official synopsis of the new movie (via Feature First) suggests a dual timeline story, which could end up having several ties to the original Final Destination movie. The description reads:
“In the 1960s, a grandmother predicts the collapse of a building and saves a group of people from death. Decades later, her granddaughter also begins to have visions of the death of her family members and later begins to...

Since the publication of "Carrie" in 1974, Stephen King has knocked out over 60 books (which have been turned into 59 movies). That's better than a book-per-year pace, which is doubly impressive considering that he's still, at the age of 77, the United States' most prominent author of fiction. Every book isn't necessarily a winner, but he delivers the spine-tingling goods frequently enough to keep his massive fanbase happy.
Though he's still regularly acquiring new fans thanks in large part to the timelessness of novels like "The Shining," "It," and "Pet Sematary," his longtime readers are, in some cases, more than just fans. They're collectors. And they guard their early purchases fiercely due to a combination of sentimental value and actual monetary value — because depending on how early you started buying King's books, you might have some immensely valuable volumes resting on your shelf or stashed away in storage. Stephen King, the famed horror author behind works like Pet Sematary, The Shining and It, has revealed what happened to the rumored adaptation of his bookThe Talisman that Steven Spielberg always pushed for. A lot of time has passed since then, but it seems King justifies the project drowning in development hell because of his substance abuse and Spielberg's "status" in the 1980s.
The Talisman was co-written between Peter Straub and King and published in 1984. It remains one of the few bestselling books by King that hasn't been adapted to the big or small screen. At some point during the 1980s, Spielberg wanted to bring the fantasy book to the big screen, but nothing happened beyond the negotiations.
Per ScreenRant's report, King appeared on the Kingcast podcast recently, and he recalled the power struggle that he went through back then. Decades have passed, but the author still remembers...

Stephen King’s The Monkey trailer was so excessive, it was banned from TV (Photo Credit – Instagram)
A new Stephen King adaptation has taken the horror genre to an entirely new level, with a trailer so shockingly violent that it was outright banned from airing on TV.
King’s adaptations, which are well known for pushing boundaries, are never short on controversy, whether it’s the chilling child murders in ‘It,’ the disturbing scenes in ‘Gerald’s Game’ that caused viewers to pass out, or the intense moments from ‘Pet Sematary.’ But the trailer for ‘The Monkey,’ directed by Osgood Perkins, has managed to top them all.

One of the greatest horror authors ever is Stephen King. There isn't a catalog of work quite like King's, where he continues to push the imagination to new limits with each and every book he writes. In the middle of all his classic horror stories is also one of the best science fiction/fantasy book series ever, The Dark Tower. Stephen King is truly a master storyteller, and he continues to entertain his readers still to this day. For over fifty years now, King has brought new ideas to the horror genre.
When considering what his best works are, it becomes difficult to determine. For die-hard fans of the author's work, there are times when some books are higher on the list than others. The titles can be very interchangeable depending on what kind of mood the reader might be in. However, many of King's works are classics like The Stand and Carrie,...

Buckle up for a modern cult classic that I think many horror fans have yet to see. Now on Screambox is Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund’s Wither, an extremely bloody scary tale of demonic possession that plays as a Swedish tribute to Sam Raimi’s horror classic, Evil Dead.
In the film, a couple set off to a cabin in the vast Swedish woodlands to have a fun holiday with their friends… but under the floorboards awaits an evil from Sweden’s dark past.
“The dazed young men and women soon mount their attack that includes decapitations, dismemberment, spurting blood, flailing axes and the kind of gore one does associate with Swedish cinema!”
Check out Wither, which Meagan Navarro calls “gloriously gory”, right now on Screambox alongside Herschell Gordon Lewis’s Blood Feast (and its remake), the Pet Sematary-inspired Lizzie Lazarus, several Giallo movies, the newly added and incredibly timely Street Trash remake,...

Stephen King is renowned as a horror author whose works—novels and screen adaptations—have terrified many fans of all generations. We’re familiar with Carrie, Salem’s Lot, The Shining, and Pet Sematary, but many are probably unaware of what influenced him to write these books.

When Jack Nicholson starred in Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of "The Shining," the horror stigma surrounding Stephen King temporarily disappeared in Hollywood. Though he tended to write pulpy, gory fictions, if the A-list team of Kubrick and Nicholson deemed his material worthy of a major motion picture, perhaps there was box office and awards glory to be mined from his other books (which the prolific author was pumping out at an astonishing pace).
This notion would be challenged something fierce throughout the 1980s. While esteemed directors like David Cronenberg and Rob Reiner earned favorable reviews for, respectively, "The Dead Zone" and "Stand by Me," critics had little use for "Cujo," "Firestarter," "Children of the Corn," "Silver Bullet," "Pet Sematary," and the King-directed "Maximum Overdrive." Really, if not for Reiner's "Stand by Me," the prestige-picture potential of a King tale might've been blotted out completely.

From Babe to Pet Sematary to Toy Story, the same furious yowl crops up in film after film. So who was the cat and who made the recording? We solve the enigma of the ‘Wilhelm Miaow’
There is a movie star you’ve never heard of, but whom you’ve almost certainly heard. She’s in Toy Story and Babe, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Home Alone 3. You can catch her in Les Misérables. And if you’re a fan of being frightened, she’s also in End of Days and Pet Sematary. Once you’re familiar with her work, you start to hear her everywhere. Picture the scene: a frustrated character flings something, possibly a boot, off-camera. Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Evil Dead Trap
Mix up your January Giallo viewing with Evil Dead Trap. Although its title invokes Evil Dead – and there’s a bit of Sam Raimi-esque kineticism in the camerawork – the 1988 Japanese film shares more in common with the lurid Italian thrillers: a mysterious killer, elaborate murder set pieces, gruesome violence, stylish cinematography, a dreamlike atmosphere, and an infectious synth score.
Upon receiving a graphic snuff film, a late-night TV host (Miyuki Ono) rallies a small production crew to investigate its origins at an abandoned military base. The story plays out in a manner that could be considered a slasher, but...

Stephen King is best known for his incredible books. He is an extremely prolific author, who has hundreds of short stories, novels, and novellas. All the while, he has worked tirelessly to continue thrilling audiences with original stories and downright fascinating wordplay. He has written in a variety of genres, including fantasy, suspense, and science fiction. Horror, however, has always been his biggest draw. His descriptions are extraordinary, his characters feel grounded and realistic, and every scenario touches on the heart of the human condition. His first major work, Carrie, for example, saw him showcasing the core of teenage isolation and rebellion.
The author is not just known for his books, of course. Many of his works have been adapted on-screen or through various other mediums.

In 1974—the year Richard Nixon resigned in the wake of Watergate, and just one year after the United States withdrew from the Vietnam War, having wasted 19 years, five months, four weeks, one day, and nearly 60,000 American lives—confidence in and trust of the United States government was in a shambles.

Horror legend Stephen King has written a fair few books over the years. Ever since he burst on the scene with "Carrie" in 1974, he's given fans at least one book nearly every year. Since most of his work has been extremely popular, he's also established himself as a bit of an authority on the horror front -- and isn't shy about commenting about either the genre or his craft as a writer.
Thanks to King's status as a horror luminary and extensive work in many other genres, we've analyzed his work many times before. You may have seen us discuss why King's endings have a reputation for being disappointing, look into his biggest career regret involving (of all things) a forgotten TV commercial, and examine the one Stephen King book that will never get a film adaption due to the author voluntarily scrubbing it from his catalog.

Hulu is moving forward with a new limited series inspired by the real-life story of convicted killer Alex Murdaugh. It's now been revealed who will be playing Murdaugh in the show, and it's one of the stars of the Terminator franchise who more recently appeared in Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer.
Per Deadline, it's been reported that Jason Clarke will portray Murdaugh in the untitled series. Clarke is one of a handful of actors to play the key role of John Connor, taking on the part in 2015's Terminator Genisys. His other big film roles include Zerk Dark Thirty, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, First Man, Pet Sematary, and The Devil All the Time. More recently, Clarke starred as former L.A. Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) was more than just a horror film; it was a cinematic primal scream that reverberated across post-Vietnam America’s culture. Hooper’s film, released amid a decade when mid-century America’s glossy optimism had given way to disillusionment, depicted a world that felt literally slaughtered.
A new kind of horror was born due to the movie’s dirty atmosphere and unrelenting tension; it didn’t rely on supernatural specters or gothic castles but rather on the terrifyingly banal. Its villains were not Dracula or Frankenstein’s monster, but rather a family of blue-collar sadists who lived in the decaying carcass of the American Dream. Fifty years later, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is still a genre-defining classic and a frightening reminder of the cultural decay it depicts.
It’s appropriate, then, that Alexandre O. Philippe’s Chain Reactions (2024) isn’t concerned with...

John Lithgow has been a staple in Hollywood movies and TV shows for decades now. Though he has played a handful of leading roles, Lithgow is best known for his memorable supporting characters and villains. He played villains in Cliffhanger (1993), Dexter, and Shrek (2001), and appeared in a supporting capacity in titles like The Crown, Perry Mason, Pet Sematary (2019), Interstellar (2014), and How I Met Your Mother.
At 79 years old, Lithgow continues to stay busy in the world of entertainment, and 2024 has been a standout year for him. He appears, for example, in the acclaimed Conclave, which is a buzzy title in terms of awards potential, in addition to appearing in Cabrini, The Rule of Jenny Pen, and The Old Man season 2. Author Stephen King is one of the most recognized and prolific authors of this era. Best known as a horror writer, King began his work as a published author through 1974's Carrie, which earned him massive acclaim. He has since gone on to publish The Shining (1977), Firestarter (1980), Pet Sematary (1983), and countless other legendary works. Throughout his career, he has released dozens of books and hundreds of short stories.
Unsurprisingly, having so much attention on King's works brought Hollywood to his doorstep. The renowned author has seen numerous adaptations. Children of the Corn (1984), Misery (1990), It (2017), and Kubrick's The Shining (1980) were all inspired by his stories. While some of his movies have failed, King's name generally serves as a boon for any project that bears it. There are, however, some works that have not seen success. One of them is now coming to a new streaming home.

Longlegs director Osgood Perkins says his new Stephen King movie is a "soulful comedy" with "Itchy & Scratchy" level violence. Stephen King adaptations have been a mainstay in cinema since 1976 when Brian De Palma's Carrie, based on King's first published novel, set a high standard for adaptations of his work. King adaptations flourished in the 1980s with Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, Cujo, Christine, and Pet Sematary. They extended beyond horror, too, with King's shorter stories, Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption, serving as the basis for acclaimed adaptations.
In recent years, Stephen King adaptations have surged in popularity, with It and It Chapter Two bringing the author's iconic tale of fear and friendship to a new generation, the former becoming the highest-grossing horror film ever. Filmmaker Mike Flanagan has become one of the most acclaimed adapters of his work, with Doctor Sleep skillfully connecting King's novel and Kubrick's interpretation of The Shining.

In movies, novels, television, comics, and just about everything aside from real life, death is not the end. Through a variety of dramatic devices, individuals can return -- for legitimate emotional/narrative reasons, be it to spackle over cracks in the plot or to generate some wholly unearned sentimentality. From Hamlet's dad popping up in Act I, Scene IV of Shakespeare's classic tragedy to trainer Mickey Goldmill appearing out of the Philadelphia heavens to exhort his pupil to fight one more round in "Rocky V," the dead are useful to the most skilled of storytellers. They're also helpful to paycheck-chasing actors cast as slashers in horror movies or boyfriends in soap operas.

If there's one thing Stephen King knows pretty well, it's villains. The prolific horror author has been writing basically nonstop since he released "Carrie," his debut novel, back in 1974, and his work has been endlessly adapted for both the big and small screen. In 2009, he even compiled a list of his favorite villains that he didn't create, and it's a pretty solid rundown — which certainly isn't surprising.
From literary icons to on-screen favorites to a villain with a confusingly familiar name — I'll clarify that whole thing when we arrive at that point — here are Stephen King's top ten villains of all time, whom he ranked for Entertainment Weekly at the close of the aughts. King ranked his top 10 from "least villainous" to "most villainous," apparently, so we've preserved that order here.

We live in an era where film studios are scared to produce original content due to perceived risk. With marketing budgets ballooning, and with new content being thrown at viewers at a rampant pace, cutting through the noise has never been more important. So the question is always: what horror movie will be franchised next? And the easy answer tends to be the latest horror success. Terrifier (despite what its creator claims) will surely go on for many more entries as it’s hard to cut off that supply of money while the fans demand it. But what other newer series could become a franchise? All signs point to Parker Finn’s Smile.
And I suppose the argument could be made that Paramount already made the decision to franchise Smile after the first. We did get a second entry after all. But as someone from a bygone era, I’m...

Stephen King is one of the most prolific writers of our time and the second author with many film and television adaptations of his novels, after William Shakespeare. With many titles under his belt, some of his most popular work has been adapted not just once.
On Nov. 12, the 2022 Firestarter will be heading to Peacock. The movie adapts the 1980 sci-fi horror thriller, and it's a remake of the 1984 film starring a young Drew Barrymore. It follows a girl, Charlie, who has the ability of pyrokinesis, and she is on the run from an organization trying to use her power for its own interest. The new adaptation had many famous names, including Zac Efron as the girl's father, but it was not successful.

After 35 years, Teen Witch star Robyn Lively‘s biggest fan might just be her little sister.
Marking the cult teen fantasy comedy’s milestone anniversary, the actress recalled how sister Blake Lively “would fan-girl over me” when Teen Witch premiered in 1989, and she continues to be a “massive” fan of the Dorian Walker-helmed film.
“It’s a family favorite, but not among my immediate family,” Robyn told Jezebel. “My kids love it, but it’s different. For my younger siblings… Blake was — and is — a massive Teen Witch fan. Like, she would fan-girl over me.”
In true stan fashion, Blake and husband Ryan Reynolds even recreated the film’s ‘Final Hour’ dance sequence for their 2012 wedding.
Teen Witch stars Robyn as high school nerd Louise Miller (Zelda Rubinstein), who learns from psychic Madame Serena that she possesses magical abilities, which kick in when she turns 16. With her newfound powers,...
