Coachella dropped its 2024 poster Tuesday night and there weren’t many big surprises when it came to the nightly headliners, which include Lana Del Rey; Tyler, the Creator; and Doja Cat. John Oates has issued a social media statement calling for empathy, but avoiding the main issue of the moment: why he and longtime collaborator Daryl Hall are engaged in litigation.
The 75-year-old posted a Thanksgiving selfie Thursday, offering a message calling for worldwide understanding.
“During this time of communal reflection and connection with loved ones, let’s not forget those experiencing challenges globally,” Oates wrote. He asked for a “more compassionate and supportive world.”
The 77-year-old Hall is suing Oates and has been granted a restraining order against his longtime bandmate. Although the legal documents are sealed, reports indicate their dispute is over which songs Oates will be allowed to sing during his solo appearances, an apparent sore point for Hall, who was the chief songwriter on most of the duo’s hits.

The tranquil world of Hall & Oates was rocked this week by news that the longtime duo are in the midst of a nasty legal battle. The exact details are sealed, but we do know that Daryl Hall was granted a temporary restraining order against John Oates. There’s also a trademark dispute of some sort. (Representatives for both artists have not returned e-mails from Rolling Stone seeking comment.)
This is shocking on several levels. Hall & Oates are one of the few duos in music history that seemingly always got along.

Daryl Hall has filed a restraining order against his former music partner, John Oates, amid a private legal battle between the Hall & Oates stars.
Based on public court records, Hall filed an undisclosed complaint against Oates on November 16 and a motion for a temporary restraining order. The order is set to begin on November 30.
The lawsuit was confirmed by the Nashville Chancery Court, who declined further comment due to the confidentiality of the case.
Hall and Oates met in 1967 and formed their band three years later. They have released 18 studio albums since their 1972 debut, “Whole Oats” and had six No. 1 singles, including “Rich Girl” and “Man Eater.”
Last year, Hall took aim at Oates on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast.
“You think John Oates is my partner?” he asked Maher. “He’s my business partner. He’s not my creative partner.”

From a certain perspective, monster movies might not seem to be as relevant during monstrous times. But in an age when our fears seem larger than life and the world constantly seems as though it’s on the brink of collapse, the best examples of the genre can almost assume a documentary-like authenticity, reflecting our reality as vividly as vérité ever could.

Small-time private detective Tommy Akhtar (Riz Ahmed) has all the swagger of a hard-boiled snoop: leather jacket on his shoulders and cigarette in his mouth, leaning against London architecture in the darkened night. His office resides above some shops, he makes friendly with local convenience store owner Mrs. Elbaz (Myriam Acharki), and asks new clients where they found him because he’s not advertising in the paper.

Wes Craven’s death is not something I can dwell upon here, yet it’s also not something I can ignore in writing about the finale of the first season of a show that wouldn’t be around without him. Indeed, in at least an indirect way, a lot of us wouldn’t be here--”here” being all about tropey, sometimes campy, classic horror--without Mr. Craven. Taylor Swift stepped in as advisor for the knockout rounds and Pharrell Williams and Adam Levine used up their steals on Monday night's episode of The Voice.
In the knockouts, contestants face off against another member of their team. Each performs a short solo, one after another, and then the coach declares a winner. Unlike the battles, these are not duets, and each coach only has one steal left.
Team Gwen: Sugar Joans vs. Bryana Salaz
Sugar Joans and Bryana Salaz of Team Gwen were the first knockout pair. Bryana chose to sing Demi Lovato’s “Heart Attack,” and Taylor and Gwen advised her to connect emotionally to the song.
Sugar decided to do Beyoncé’s “Love On Top,” and had some trouble in rehearsals over-doing her signature growl.

In the knockouts, contestants face off against another member of their team. Each performs a short solo, one after another, and then the coach declares a winner. Unlike the battles, these are not duets, and each coach only has one steal left.

The current, ubiquitous single by Taylor Swift, international music superstar and the best guest coach in The Voice‘s seven season history — gay blasphemy coming atcha in 5, 4, 3, 2… — by just a nose over Cher, champions the concept of “shaking it off.”
Heart-breakers gonna break, break, break, break, break/ And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake/ Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake/ I shake it off, I shake it off
It’s an excellent, albeit simplistically worded, life philosophy, and yet at this moment in my relationship with NBC’s reality singing competition, I just cahhhhhhn’t.

Washington, March 4: Gwen Stefani and Pink are in an apparent feud after Stefani rejected her former rival's invite for a playdate.
Sources told Radar Online that the pair's rivalry is "alive and well" and Pink had recently suggested that she and the 'Rich Girl' hitmaker bring their children together for a Beverly Hills playdate.
Insiders claimed that the 34-year-old singer was pretty upset when she got an email a couple of days later from Stefani saying that the playdate can't happen "not now and not ever".
Sources added that Pink wanted to bury the hatchet by having their children meet each other. (Ani)...

I hope you all survived the annual food carnage of Thanksgiving. There’s no time to mourn your skinny jeans, because we have only six contestants left on NBC’s “The Voice,” and they sang their hearts out for you this week. Each singer did a coach’s choice and a special dedication (of their own choosing). It’s a lot of music, so take some antacid and let’s chat about my highlights (and lowlights) from last night’s episode (in no particular order). 1. Merry early Christmas to me! Twelve performances is a lot for six people. It seemed tough on all of them, even the judges. Everyone had one song that was pretty wack; Xtina was drunk for the first time all year; Adam had petty jealousies that he set to the music of his life. Cole Vosbury, "Rich Girl" Cole did a fabulous job with this. He is like a machine that cannot fail. I might prefer the clear-eyed sincerity of the original Daryl performance, but Cole managed to sound both disinterested and amused in his rendition — no easy feat! Side note, they do not bleep out bitch anymore on prime-time television. I am sort of offended by that and I don’t know why.Tessanne Chin, "Redemption Song"This was just the weirdest. Tessanne originally wanted to sing “Redemption Song” in a perfectly normal way but then Adam was like, “No, you have to belt it...

Might there finally be a clear frontrunner on this season of The Voice? Because Cole Vosbury has had a pretty solid showing on the iTunes songs chart every week since viewer voting began (this week he's virtually neck and neck with Tessanne Chin, who's at the head of the class for the very first time). At the very least, he is the dark horse to keep an eye on – especially because he hails from three-time winner Blake Shelton's team. (Plus, there's the whole Duck Dynasty vibe he gives off with that broom-like beard.

The Top 6 contestants on The Voice performed two songs each last night – one chosen by their coaches and one chosen by themselves. Powerhouse Jacquie Lee of Team Christina Aguilera stole the show with her emotional performances.
The Voice Recap: Cole Vosbury Performances
Cole Vosbury, the last remaining contestant on Blake Shelton’s team, performed Hall & Oates’ “Rich Girl,” as chosen by his coach. Cee Lo Green, Vosbury’s former coach, told the singer he was still rooting for him, while Adam Levine praised his arrangement. Vosbury chose to sing James Morrison’s “A Better Man” and dedicated it to his first love. The emotional performance balanced out his fun performance from earlier.
Tessanne Chin Performances
Tessanne Chin, one of three contestants on Levine’s team, started with Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song.” While Chin was nervous because Marley is an important figure in her country, she slayed the song, as usual.

When it comes to warm fuzzies, good vibrations and positive feedback, The Voice has a coaching panel that’s second to none.
Nevertheless, if you listen verrrrry carefully, you can hear their withering subtext, their coded messages to the viewing public in favor of one contestant or in opposition to another.
Take Blake Shelton’s repeated mentions tonight that it’s not just about hitting big notes full-on (a subtle put-down of Jacquie Lee?) or Adam Levine essentially telling Matthew Schuler he peaked with his Top 12 week cover of “Hallelujah.”

With only two weeks until a winner is crowned, The Voice‘s final six singers came together in perfect discord Dec. 2, vying for a spot in the season’s final five. Each singer got to tackle two songs this week, giving fans a better idea what they’re voting — or in some cases not voting — for.
Round 1: Cole Vosbury Reminds Everyone How ‘Great’ He Is
Cole Vosbury got things started on a high note with his rendition of “Rich Girl” — the Hall & Oates version, not the Gwen Stefani one — and the coaches couldn’t have been more thrilled with his performance. Even Adam Levine had to admit that Cole’s voice is, simply put, “great.”

And then there were six. As Season 5 of "The Voice" enters its final month, the remaining contestants take the stage on Monday (Dec. 2) to fight of America's vote, tackling two songs each. (Gotta pad out those two hours somehow!) With coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera each responsible for choosing one song for each of their artists (while a team-less CeeLo Green twiddles his thumbs), the remaining Top 6 will get the chance to select their second song. Will they make the right choices and earn some love? Let's find out!
Up first tonight is Team Blake's last man standing, Cole Vosbury. After tackling country last week, his coach wants him to have a little fun and selects Hall & Oates' "Rich Girl" for his first song of the night. Cole sounds great on the song, which is to be expected, but could it be enough to keep Team Blake in the game?...

Getting into the Halloween spirit, Gwen Stefani got all gussied up and hit the sidewalk for some serious candy last night (October 31) in Beverly Hills.
The preggers “Rich Girl” songstress, clad in a beautiful white princess bride dress, escorted her sons Kingston and Zuma around the neighborhood with her husband Gavin Rossdale.
Earlier this month, Gwen indirectly confirmed her third pregnancy by holding her belly while out at a charity gala with her handsome hubby.
Then again, rumors of a bun in the oven have been swirling ever since Gwen and Gavin were overheard discussing the pregnancy in August while on holiday in the South of France.

Outside Lands day three: my legs are cramping, I can’t feel my feet, my face is sunburned and Hall and Oates are about to come on. Suddenly, I’m feeling good. Daryl Hall has noticeably aged looks-wise, but his voice is just as fresh as ever. The most notable songs before their encore were “Maneater” and “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” which included a long and satisfactory guitar breakdown by John Oates. Although their songs are mostly mellow, their energy on stage was captivating. At their encore “Rich Girl” sounded just like the 1977 album version. As Oates...

New Orleans — For more than two decades, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival has closed with a performance by the city's own Neville Brothers.
On Sunday, that tradition changed. Aaron Neville performed on a stage with his new band while young brass band frontman Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews closed the festival's biggest stage – where the Neville Brothers once held court the last day.
Andrews and his band, Orleans Avenue, entertained a jam-packed crowd as the festival ended its 2013 run. A sea of faces stretched to the track's back fence.
Neville said he views the closing lineup change as kind of a "passing of the guard.
"Trombone Slim, as I call him, will do a great job," Neville said of Andrews. "I remember when it was Professor Longhair out there and then we did it for a long time. It's time. Slim is a big musician and I'm proud of the way he's handled himself.

Simon Cowell might just be a genius. An hour into Wednesday night’s X Factor episode, all I could think was “Just an hour and change till the series premiere of Nashville!”
