At the time, this film was the most expensive animated production in Germany.
During the film's release in German theaters, director Michael Schoemann stated that the reason this film doesn't tell the real story about the discovery of the New World is because he wanted to create a film from a more satirical view in order to differentiate ourselves clearly from the lofty views of history, so we can present Columbus as a lovable, charming, and befuddled scholar, rather than having him portrayed as a greedy explorer as depicted in history books.
The film was widely panned by critics and audiences, being criticized for its poor animation quality, fairy tale plot, nonsense voice acting, and poorly written script.
During the "Fella Like You" musical number in the city streets near the beginning of the film, a brief shot of the townspeople shows a group lined up in rainbow colors: (from left) a man in blue, a woman in green, a man in yellow, a partially obstructed figure in orange, a woman in red, and a woman in pink/violet.
One of several films about Christopher Columbus released in 1992 to coincide with the 500th anniversary of his voyage, including: Christopher Columbus: The Discovery (1992), 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992), and Carry on Columbus (1992).
