Anyone who’s ever been skeptical about the safety of capitalizing on cryptocurrency will have their worst suspicions confirmed by “Cold Wallet,” a shrewd and suspenseful thriller about three would-be working-class vigilantes determined to retrieve their investments from an amoral scammer. Right from the start, director Cutter Hodierne develops a rooting interest in his self-styled avengers, even as (also right from the start) it’s clear that they are in way, way over their heads and sinking lower as the plot progresses.
We’re introduced to Billy (Raúl Castillo), an underemployed screw-up, while he loudly proclaims to other customers in a Berkshires karaoke bar that he’s been “following crypto since that Game Stop thing,” and brags that his investment in a currency called Tulip is going nowhere but up. But it really isn’t, much to his shock after he promises his young daughter (Joanna Sylvie Weinig) that he...

As far as horror directors go, they don’t get much more influential than Sam Raimi. If he’d only made The Evil Dead trilogy, his place in the pantheon would be guaranteed, but he also made two kick-ass thrillers, A Simple Plan and The Gift, and – oh yeah – the original Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. After a brief return to superhero movie directing with Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness (which made just under a billion dollars worldwide), Raimi is set for a return to horror with Send Help, which now has a January 30th, 2026 release date.
His first legit horror flick since 2009’s underrated Drag Me to Hell, Raimi’s Doctor Strange co-star Rachel McAdams takes the lead in what’s being called a survival thriller/horror film. Initial reports called it “Misery meets Cast Away,” with it said to be a two-hander. Film scooper Daniel Richtman...

Image Source: Paramount Pictures When it comes to awards, Billy Bob Thornton is best known for 1996’s Sling Blade, which accounted for two of his three Oscar nominations: one for Best Actor, and one for Best Adapted Screenplay, which he won. But most people would be hard pressed to come up with the film that earned Thornton his third nomination. While A Simple Plan won plenty of critical acclaim, it never found its audience in the theaters, grossing just $16 million during its theatrical run. Through home video and streaming, though, more people have become aware of the film and Thornton’s Oscar-nominated performance. When we spoke to Thornton about the movie during its initial run, he told us that it took him a long time to become aware of the movie, too — he’d had the script for months before original director John Boorman (who later gave way to Sam Raimi...

Billy Bob Thornton explains why he didn't take villainous roles in Spider-Man and Mission Impossible 3, saying "audiences remember it forever." Since the late 1990s, the actor has been known for portraying complex, often flawed, and gritty characters in films and TV shows, ranging from intense dramas like Sling Blade to dark comedies like Bad Santa. However, there are some massive movies that he turned down. Thornton currently stars in Taylor Sheridan's new Paramount+ series Landman as Tommy Norris, the titular landman at an oil company.
In an episode of The Playlist's Bingeworthy podcast, Billy Bob Thornton talked about why he turned down villainous roles as Green Goblin in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and as Owen Davian in Mission Impossible 3. For Spider-Man, he simply didn't want to get up early and go through "five or six hours of makeup." For Mission Impossible, he "didn’t want to be the...

Billy Bob Thornton’s dark Christmas comedy franchise is making the holidays a little more twisted, as it climbs up the streaming charts. The multi-talented performer broke through in 1996 with the disturbing drama Sling Blade, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, and winning the award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Thornton in 1998 picked up another nomination for playing a tortured character in a decidedly dark movie, getting a Best Supporting Actor nod for Sam Raimi’s thriller A Simple Plan.
Thornton’s most noteworthy early roles indeed placed him on a darkly dramatic path. The star soon veered into the comedy realm, however, with roles that showed his inherently edgy and brooding qualities being adapted to funny material. Thornton went for offbeat chuckles in the black comedy Pushing Tin, the dramedy Bandits and the Coen Brothers’ romantic farce Intolerable Cruelty. He also went for somewhat more broadly-appealing guffaws in the...

Picture this: you’ve introduced the world to a revolutionary horror-comedy franchise but still haven’t quite cracked the mainstream. Then along comes Sharon Stone – and we’re talking 1990s Sharon Stone – who is such a fan of your oddball movies that she personally approves you as director for a western starring herself and Leonardo DiCaprio. You’d think you’d be grateful for being ushered into the scene, but according to Sharon Stone, Sam Raimi – director of The Quick and the Dead – has never acknowledged the help.
Sharon Stone, who also served as producer of The Quick and the Dead, is taking credit for putting Sam Raimi on the map. “I had my great Italian cinematographer Dante Spinotti, and I was very blessed to produce [The Quick and the Dead] and to have the opportunity to cast this film. A Keanu Reeves crime thriller has become a streaming success six years later. Reeves is a divisive actor who achieved success after his breakthrough role in the 1989 time travel comedy Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and became a superstar after leading the Wachowskis' 1999 sci-fi blockbuster The Matrix. His performance style has been divisive, as he has earned nine Razzie award nominations, followed by a Razzie Redeemer Award nomination and a spot at No. 4 on the New York Times' list of the greatest actors of the 21st century.
While he is best known for his action roles in titles such as Speed, the Matrix franchise, and the John Wick franchise, Keanu Reeves movies have taken on a huge variety of genres. This includes starring opposite his Speed co-star Sandra Bullock in the time travel romance The Lake House, playing Jonathan Harker in the Francis Ford Coppola horror movie Bram Stoker's Dracula,...

The Oscar-winning actor, writer, director, musician and star of Bad Santa, Armageddon and The Man Who Wasn’t There is ready to answer your questions
What is Billy Bob Thornton’s most iconic role? Some may say the taciturn barber in the Coen brothers’ The Man Who Wasn’t There, others might contend it’s the learning disabled killer in his early film Sling Blade. But we all know the truth: it’s the sex-addicted alcoholic Father Christmas in Bad Santa who is obsessed with the “three Bs”.
Be that as it may, Thornton has had a stellar Hollywood career since emerging in the mid-90s. Sling Blade, the independent 1996 film he wrote, directed and starred, won him a best adapted screenplay Oscar – though his directing career went into hibernation after a difficult time adapting Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses a few years later. One would think the good people at Lionsgate might be trying to hide Greedy People by quietly announcing its release in theaters this month, just last week. The Lily James and Joseph Gordon-Levitt vehicle came out on August 23rd with very little fanfare. Not to mention, August (and January) are known as the dumping grounds for films studios are ashamed of.
However, I am relieved to set the record straight: Greedy People is a bloody good time. The film is full of quirky characters, ominous motivations, and moral ambiguity, exploring how ordinary people can be driven to acts of money lust and even murder—all while maintaining the core value of these types of films, where almost no one gets away clean.

Billy Bob Thornton has always blended his career with film and television roles. His most recent starring role was on the Amazon legal drama “Goliath,” for which he Thornton won the Golden Globe as Best TV Drama Actor.
Although Thornton’s television work has been limited, he is no stranger to TV awards, having won another Golden Globe for his work in FX’s limited series “Fargo,” as well as an Emmy nom and a nomination from the Screen Actors Guild.

When TCM channel host Dave Karger used to be a writer for Entertainment Weekly in his early days as a print journalist, he would focus a great deal on interviewing the big pop stars of the day, along with his duties on the film beat. But little did very many people suspect then that what he really wanted to be writing about was “Laura”… not Branigan, but David Raksin’s music for the classic 1945 noir. That was the film that really prompted Karger’s lifelong love of movie scoring.
“His score for ‘Laura’ really turned me on to classic film music, and film scores in general,” says Karger. “And then you go back and you learn that in 1945, there were 20 Oscar nominees that year in the category of best score for a non-musical film — and David Raksin wasn’t even one of the 20 nominees. It’s always fun to discuss horror novels that Aren’T Stephen King. No knock on the monster from Maine, he’s the master of horror novels over the last, oh I don’t know, 50 years, for a reason but its nice to not have the show be solely dedicated to his adapted works. Landman: Production begins on the Paramount+ series from Taylor Sheridan starring Billy Bob Thornton

Just as Yellowstone will end with the hit drama’s fifth season, Taylor Sheridan is teaming up with Billy Bob Thornton for Landman, an original drama series created by Sheridan and Christian Wallace. Paramount+ announced today that production for Landman is officially underway with a new photo from the set.

There was a time, in the ’90s, when indie film noir thought it was being hip by imitating the trappings of ’40s thrillers — the dark shadows, Venetian blinds, and “slinky” femme fatales. But a true noir never really looks back; it’s always pushing forward, toward fresh new varieties of desire and dread. “Love Lies Bleeding” is like that. It’s the second feature directed by Rose Glass, the British director of “Saint Maud” (2019), and though it’s made with a powerful sense of style, there’s nothing retro or mannered about it. It’s set in a small desert town in rural grunge New Mexico in 1989, and from the opening moments, which unfold at the warehouse workout gym where Lou (Kristen Stewart) toils away as a manager, the movie lets you taste the scuzzy deadbeat Western sleaze as surely as Mailer’s “The Executioner’s Song” did.

December 2003. Twenty years ago. It was a special time for moviegoers. That’s because it was the first holiday season in which “Love Actually” could actually be part of one’s Christmas time festivities. (Richard Curtis‘ ensemble romantic comedy was still playing to healthy crowds in cinemas.)
While the film would not figure into that year’s Academy Awards race, the cast did feature a handful of past Oscar contenders — and a few winners. Sho which “Love Actually” cast member will be next to earn an Oscar nomination?
The most noticeable of those winners was Emma Thompson, 1992’s Best Actress for “Howards End.” She tried (unsuccessfully) for acting awards three more times, including for 1995’s “Sense and Sensibility.” For penning that script, she accepted the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for superbly adapting the classic novel by Jane Austen.

Emma Thompson holds a distinct Oscars record. She is the only person in the history of the Academy Awards to win for both acting and writing. She took home the Best Actress trophy in 1993 for “Howard’s End.” Three years later, she collected an Oscar bookend with her Best Adapted Screenplay win for bringing Jane Austen‘s 1811 novel “Sense and Sensibility” to the screen.
Prior to Thompson’s double wins, several others contended for both acting and writing. Orson Welles won Best Original Screenplay in 1942 with Herman J. Mankiewicz for “Citizen Kane.” He also picked up a Best Actor nomination for the same film. Warren Beatty has a rich history in both acting and writing awards. He was nominated for Best Actor in 1968 for “Bonnie & Clyde,” in 1979 for “Heaven Can Wait, in 1982 for “Reds,” and in 1992″ for “Bugsy.” He picked up Original Screenplay bids in 1976 for “Shampoo” (shared with...

The Peripheral won’t be seeing a second season after all. Prime Video has cancelled the sci-fi series, TVLine has confirmed, despite previously announcing its renewal back in February.
‘Un-Renewed’ TV Shows: Stumptown, People of Earth, Why Women Kill, Glow and 20+ Others With Reversed Renewals View List
According to Deadline, the decision was made because of extended production delays due to the concurrent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Deadline also reports that The Peripheral may be one of several freshmen Prime Video series whose renewals will be rescinded.

Prime Video has canceled “The Peripheral,” despite the Chloë Grace Moretz-led sci-fi series receiving a renewal for a second season in February.
An individual with knowledge of the matter tells TheWrap that the cancelation stems from delays caused by the ongoing Writers’ Guild of America strike, which began on May 2, and SAG-AFTRA strike, which began on July 14. The individual noted that the series was originally intended to go into production this year for a release in 2024.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by William Gibson, the series hailed from “Westworld” creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s Kilter Films banner, who are under an overall deal at Amazon Studios. “The Peripheral” follows Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. BET+’s new darkly comic thriller Average Joe may or may not be better than Netflix’s Ozark — I never loved Ozark, but maybe you did and so be it — but the gap between the two shows isn’t as great as the inevitable gap in coverage would seem to suggest.
Average Joe and Ozark are both highly derivative pieces of violent, ethically twisty pulp made somewhat distinctive by their regional specificity, irritatingly washed-out cinematography and sitcom-honed leading men repressing their natural timing to play a tamped-down everyman.
Though it doesn’t yet realize aspirations that could generously be described as Jim Thompson meets August Wilson — that’s a show I would very much watch — Average Joe has the feeling of a potential breakout for BET+, though it’s impossible to know what a “breakout for BET+” would mean in this landscape.

Director Rod Blackhurst’s stark crime flick Blood for Dust is nothing new under the sun — or, more accurately, the frigid sun of Wyoming and Montana, where the story takes place. But with an array of burnished, lived-in performances from a strong cast and an underlying level of suspense punctuated by a few gnarly action scenes, it’s certainly a watchable little genre venture that could find an audience, especially on streaming.
Fargo (both the movie and the TV series) immediately comes to mind in this early 90s-set thriller that feels very much like a product of the early 90s, with lots of caustic dialogue and outbursts of gory violence against a backdrop of Western American desolation. Now, as Evil Dead Rise hits the big screen – with Raimi as producer, bringing director Lee Cronin into the undead fold – Empire presents a ranking of Raimi’s ten best films. Make way for killer carnage, heartfelt heroes, doomed protagonists, and Deadites galore.

Nearly everyone he spoke to said his script wouldn’t work: you couldn’t just dive into the blood and guts without setting it up, they said.

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the directors of this weekend’s dinosaur thriller 65, and the film’s producer Sam Raimi recently sat down to answer fan questions during a Reddit Ama session, and some interesting information came out of that series of Qs and As. For example, Beck and Woods revealed that a sequel to their 2019 slasher Haunt is in the works, and Raimi mentioned that members of his Ghost House Pictures production team are trying to come up with a story for a sequel to his 2009 film Drag Me to Hell. During the session, Raimi also named his personal favorite Sam Raimi movie – and let fans know he has a couple options to choose from when the time comes for him to direct his next movie.

Drag Me to Hell could be getting a sequel, Sam Raimi has teased. The film, which was originally released in 2009, was the Evil Dead director's return to the horror genre after leaving it behind to helm films like the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy, A Simple Plan, and For the Love of the Game. It followed a young banker (Alison Lohman) who is cursed by an old woman (Lorna Raver) when she refuses to offer her an extension on her mortgage. While she attempts to learn how to reverse the curse, she is haunted by a demon known as the Lamia.
Raimi recently participated in a Reddit Ama while promoting the new Adam Driver sci-fi film 65, which he produced.

Despite being a horror vet, Sam Raimi reveals his favorite movie of his own is that of A Simple Plan rather than The Evil Dead franchise. Raimi got his start with the latter movies centered on a group of college friends coming under attack from demonic forces at a cabin in the woods. The years since have seen him venture into a variety of other genres, most notably that of the superhero world with Darkman, the Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man trilogy and the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

"Army of Darkness" turns 30 this week and enjoys a well-earned reputation as a horror-comedy classic. Indeed, the influence of Sam Raimi's filmmaking stretches beyond the Pacific Ocean. Kentaro Miura, the late, legendary manga artist responsible for "Berserk," named Raimi and Tim Burton as his favorite filmmakers. In an interview (transcribed into English), Miura praised these directors as "offbeat," noting, "it's strange that a person can be that offbeat and big at the same time."
Miura would know; "Berserk" is one of the bleakest, most violent stories you'll ever read. Some of its splash pages are less action spreads and more ethereal tableaus. However, it's often cited as the crown jewel of fantasy manga. He and Raimi were so alike, in fact, that Miura started to get concerns about copyright. He recounted:
"Back then [the late 1980s] I was still in college, it was the day I finished the first episode of 'Berserk,...

The "Evil Dead" trilogy is definitive proof that director/actor duo Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are a match made in bloody heaven. The original film of the franchise, 1981's "The Evil Dead" was Raimi's directorial feature film debut that was shot on a measly 375,000 budget, but would quickly earn itself cult status through its Nc-17 rating and oppressive, nihilistic atmosphere. The film's premise was simple, following five college students who unleash something demonic and malicious during their stay in their isolated cabin in the woods. Once all hell breaks loose, Ashley "Ash" Williams (Campbell) is the last man standing amongst the wrath of the Deadites.
Years later, Raimi would return with "Evil Dead II," which centers the series once again on our survivor Ash, but also most notably brought the camp factor that the series would become known for. It's the fan-favorite of the entire franchise — delivering an over-the-top,...

In the early 1990s, Sam Raimi was a low-budget horror maestro who'd made the leap to studio filmmaking without sacrificing his gonzo visual style. Riding high off the commercial success of 1990's "Darkman," a deliriously fun and funky comic-book riff that still stands as one of the best superhero movies ever made, Raimi could pretty much call his shot. So he did. And that's how Universal Pictures bankrolled the third installment of a horror series that most people had never heard of, let alone seen.
The ending of "Evil Dead 2," which dropped the modern-day hero of the first two, tenuously linked movies, in the Middle Ages was an unexpected howler of a punchline. Under no circumstances did I expect Raimi would actually make a third movie set in medieval times. That would be expensive. And silly. But if you could suddenly afford to make an expensively silly movie, would you not?...

(For the 30th anniversary of Sam Raimi's "Army of Darkness," we're looking back at some scary and funny anecdotes about the movie this week).
Both "Evil Dead II" and "Army of Darkness" open with recaps, explaining the story of Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) up to where the previous film left off. This is a necessity since both "The Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead II" end with cliffhangers; in the first, Ash is ambushed by an Unseen Force, while in the second he's sent back to medieval times. This mandated an explanation in each subsequent movie for viewers unacquainted with the series. But there's a catch to this: The story is never quite the same in any of the three films.

The history of video game cinema is littered with fascinating what-ifs when it comes to the movies that were never made. George A. Romero's "Resident Evil" and Gore Verbinski's "Bioshock" are the stuff of legend, while David O. Russell's vision for "Uncharted" — which was put into development back when Russell's name wasn't mud — was certainly a far cry from the final version of the film. If nothing else, it would have featured a whole lot less parkour.

If you remember “Project Popcorn” – the strategy that saw all 2021 Warner Bros. movies stream on HBO Max the same day they hit theaters – then “Mortal Kombat” and “Those Who Wish Me Dead” will sound familiar. The martial arts reboot and Taylor Sheridan thriller, respectively, will be leaving the streaming service this month.
It’s also final call for Martin Scorsese’s “Bringing Out the Dead,” the extended version of Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor” and Edgar Wright’s terrific sci-fi action-comedy “The World’s End” if auteurs are your thing. “Planet Earth” and “Planet Earth II” are also leaving the streaming service soon.
Here’s the full list of what’s leaving HBO Max in December 2022.

It’s almost the end of another year…another grueling, relentless, shuffle around the pitiless sun. But before that: more content! HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2022 is filled with a handful of exciting original TV series.
December 2022 truly is TV’s time to shine on HBO Max. Things get started on day one with the release of Gossip Girl season 2 (Dec. 1). That will be followed by His Dark Materials on Dec. 5. Adapting The Amber Spyglass, this season promises to be the most action-packed yet for the BBC/HBO fantasy collaboration. December 8 sees the arrival of Doom Patrol season 4. This DC comic property doesn’t have the cultural cache of some of its CW contemporaries but when it’s rolling, it might be one of the best comic series around.
Now that Warner has mostly scuttled its simultaneous streaming/theatrical release strategy, there aren’t many big original movies to speak of.

30 years ago, Army of Darkness, the third and final installment in director Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy, premiered at the Sitges Film Festival and would later be released by Universal Pictures in 1993. Army of Darkness follows hapless S-Mart employee Ash (Bruce Campbell) as he fights against the titular army of bloodthirsty Deadites in the Middle Ages to return to his own time.
It’s my favorite film of the Evil Dead trilogy and one of Raimi’s finest hours as a director. I first discovered the film through a mixture of television and YouTube videos about the grander Evil Dead trilogy by James Rolfe of Angry Video Game Nerd fame. Army of Darkness instantly made me obsessed with the entire franchise. I read Bruce Campbell’s first autobiography, If Chins Could Kill, in the lead-up to Fede Alvarez’ Evil Dead remake’s release in 2013. I even made Ash’s...
