"Das Veilchen" can be seen as a Stadtheimatfilm, where the city of Berlin is treated as any rural scene of the German genre "Heimatfilm". Home is represented as a small part of Berlin, one steps down to its ground and never gets out of it again. It's a cultural backwater, a cruel mixture of preussian dreams and ideas of the picturesque life of the poor. Main character is, beside the flower-seller Mariechen Bindedraht, an old horse. Its name is "Gravelotte" a dialectal version of a battlefield of World War One, and we get to know more about its glory past... Now the horse is threatened by the slaughter's knife, but thanks to Mariechen and her grandfather and all the other nice people of Berlin Gravelotte gets a medal and the chance to spend the rest of its days as a Horse of honour with special treatment in the army.
