Director Joshua John Miller’s “The Exorcism” opens nationwide June 21, but one theater showing it holds a particularly special place in his heart: Quentin Tarantino‘s Vista Theater in Hollywood. Not only will the Vista screen “The Exorcism” in 35mm, but Tarantino has programmed Russ Meyer‘s 1965 cult classic “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” as a midnight show following Miller’s film on June 21 and June 22. “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” stars Miller’s mother, Susan Bernard, who passed away five years ago, and “The Exorcism” is a film inspired by his father, Jason Miller, who played Father Karras in “The Exorcist” and ended up working in lower-budget horror films like “Mommy” and “The Eternal.”
In “The Exorcism,” Russell Crowe plays an actor with a troubled past who sees a shot at redemption in a new role as a priest in a remake of a famous horror film — unnamed in Miller and M.A. Fortin’s script,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Season 1 of “Lockwood & Co.,” now streaming on Netflix.
Ruby Stokes ain’t afraid of no ghosts — even in a world overrun by them.
On Netflix’s “Lockwood & Co.,” Stokes wields a rapier sword as Lucy Carlyle, who hunts down spirits in an alternative London where young adults have psychic abilities, and use them professionally to subdue ghosts.
Based on the books by Jonathan Stroud, and developed by Joe Cornish (“Attack the Block”), “Lockwood & Co.” has been a breakout for Netflix since its Jan. 27 premiere –– scaring away competitors from the streamer’s Top 10 list (which it’s reached in 74 countries).
Stokes herself is no stranger to a Netflix phenomenon, having played Francesca Bridgerton in the first two seasons of the Shondaland sensation “Bridgerton.” But to accommodate filming “Lockwood & Co.,” she appeared only a few times in Season 2, and eventually stepped away from the role,...

Film at Lincoln Center and The Museum of Modern Art has set Audrey Diwan’s Happening and The African Desperate by Martine Syms will bookend the 51st edition of their collaboration, New Directors/New Films running April 20–May 1 in NYC.
The festival will introduce 26 features and 11 shorts and total of 39 directors — 21 of which are women.
“Portraits of individuals and communities navigating uncertain and turbulent circumstances in pursuit of freedom, self-determination, and survival set a remarkably contemplative tone to the lineup,” said La Frances Hui, curator of MoMa’s film department and event co-char.
Happening (L’Événement), winner of the 2021 Venice International Film Festival’s Golden Lion, is the portrait of a young woman attempting to secure an illegal abortion in 1960s provincial France. It was acquired by IFC Films and will be released May 6.

If you know anything about the independent film world, it won’t be surprising to discover the project writer/director Justin McConnell is hoping to get off the ground at the start of Clapboard Jungle isn’t going to be much further along in its pre-production process four years later. That’s the nature of the beast. You’re going to have moments of elation when it appears that funds have come through and the inevitable spiral downward when those plans evaporate. You’re going to hit your head against a wall to draw blood from that stone until you realize stagnation isn’t doing anyone any favors when you have other ideas that may bear fruit quicker. Guess what, though? The next one probably won’t get made before the end of this journey either.
To see that adversity first-hand is what drives McConnell’s documentary about the industry...

It’s the stuff of movie dreams. At the tender age of 19, movie-obsessed Singaporean sound editor Ai-Ling Lee decamped for Hollywood, armed only with some audio engineering training and a handful of local commercial gigs, intent on breaking into the mostly male-dominated world of film sound work. She papered the town with letters to studio brass, asking for the chance to simply sit in during post-production, all the better to learn her chosen craft from the ground up.
Two decades, two Oscar nominations, and an enviable assortment of projects later, Lee’s persistence has paid off. With her Best Sound Editing nod for her work on “La La Land,” she became the only Asian woman (so far!) to be nominated in the category. Even sweeter: the nomination was in tandem with her frequent partner Mildred Iatrou Morgan, making the duo the only all-female team to ever snag a spot in the category.

Like Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, director Michael Almereyda (of The Eternal, Hamlet previously) is taking on a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's lesser known Cymbeline. After directing Ethan Hawke in a similar style adaptation of Hamlet, Almereyda reteams with the Training Day star to amp up the tale of Romans and Celtics going head to head, this time with the aid of automatic weapons, explosions and a gritty cast of characters played by Ed Harris, Milla Jovovich, Anton Yelchin, Dakota Johnson. Benaroya Pictures describes the film in the vein of "Sons of Anarchy" and this first trailer supports that. Here's the first trailer for Michael Almereyda's Cymbeline from Ontd (via The Playlist): Cymbeline is directed by Michael Almereyda (Hamlet), based on William Shakespeare's original text. Ethan Hawke (Training Day, The Purge) stars in the film which unfolds as an epic battle between dirty cops and a drug...

The amazingly versatile actor Jared Harris has signed to star in The Quiet Ones, the forthcoming supernatural thriller from famed British horror factory Hammer. Talk about appropriate casting...
Harris, the son of renowned Irish actor Richard Harris, has been quietly building a career as a first-rate character actor since the '80s, disappearing into roles ranging from Henry VIII and Andy Warhol to Professor Moriarty and John Lennon. Though he's received a fair amount of notice for his recent work on AMC's TV juggernaut Mad Men, he'll likely get more attention for his turn as Ulysses S. Grant in Lincoln, Stephen Spielberg's upcoming Abraham Lincoln biopic.
The Quiet Ones, to be directed by John Pogue (Quarantine 2) and written by Pogue and Tom DeVille (Lexx), is supposedly based on true events that occurred in 1974.
