Hollywood has boasted of many incredible on-screen pairs but Julia Roberts and Richard Gere are definitely near the top. The duo starred in two rom-coms in the ‘90s and became international sensations due to their chemistry. While 1999’s Runaway Bride was a moderate success, their first collaboration in Pretty Woman is a modern-day classic.
The film, which follows the blossoming love story between a business tycoon and a pr*stitute became a global success and a pop culture staple. Owing to the brilliant chemistry between the lead pair, the film was a box-office success. Gere mentioned that Roberts convinced him to come on board with just three words.

Long before Julia Roberts embodied the role of Maggie Carpenter in the 1999 romantic comedy, she famously got the tag of the “runaway bride” following her canceled wedding to Emmy-winning actor Kiefer Sutherland. The two met on the set of the horror film Flatliners, quickly forming a bond that led to an engagement announcement.

And they also had plans to walk down the aisle on 14 June 1991, but fate intervened, and the wedding was called off. Shortly after, Roberts flew off with Sutherland’s best friend, actor Jason Patric. Despite the media frenzy that followed, the Stand By Me star acknowledged the heartbreak of the situation with a resigned yet mature outlook.

In 1999, Julia Roberts played the role of Anna Scott in Notting Hill, a romantic comedy written by the one and only Richard Curtis. While the film was as adorable as it gets, it turns out Richard Curtis was pretty terrified of the actress on set. Well, does it have something to do with her setting boundaries after a series of bad experiences?

No one seems as sorted as Julia Roberts, in Hollywood, considering how the actress neither fumbles with her choice of project, nor with her life decisions. So here’s a throwback to when the Runaway Bride actress actually turned her own wedding into the film’s plot. Dumping her fiancée Kiefer Sutherland three days before the wedding, Roberts went her own way in life.

Now, people might assume that actor Kiefer Sutherland must have felt heartbroken and possibly cursed Julia Roberts. But surprisingly, the actor praised his ex-fiancée for her bravery. Implying that everyone gets cold feet before their wedding, but only a few hold the guts to call off the event, Sutherland shockingly embraced Roberts’ courage.

The tragedy of being the most successful person on a job is that all eyes are trained on the star. For celebrities and filmmakers, that attention and scrutiny increases tenfold due to the nature of their profession. When it comes to Hollywood in the 1990s, Julia Roberts happened to be the most in-demand A-lister after the actress’s interminable acclaim after Pretty Woman.

Soon after, Roberts’ magical reputation spread like wildfire across Hollywood with filmmakers wanting to work with her in every upcoming project. Fortunately for her, the release of Pretty Woman in 1990 was immediately followed by a role opening up in Steven Spielberg’s Disney fantasy adventure film, Hook. ‘If you see one movie this summer, see Star Wars. If you see a second, see Austin Powers.’ Thus spake trailer-man, in the teaser for Mike Myers’s upcoming comedy sequel, and to a great extent, that’s exactly what happened in the summer of 1999. Well, almost.
The 20th century was running out of time and that summer was impatiently filled with as many tantalising prospects as any big movie season in recent memory. It appeared to be the summer of comebacks. Following Terrence Malick’s long-awaited return to directing in the recently-released The Thin Red Line, Summer ’99 would see not only George Lucas but Stanley Kubrick making their much-delayed encores – though we knew by then that this was actually Kubrick’s swan song.
An exercise in peak-nostalgia seemed inevitable, but the season proved to be full of surprises. None more so than the success of that second Austin Powers film,...

Hannah Brown knows a thing or two about love.
After appearing on season 23 of The Bachelor, the former Miss Alabama USA went on to became a fan favorite which led her to lead season 15 of The Bachelorette. Each week audiences watched Brown try to find love as she shared her vulnerability, humor and candidness (hint: who knew a windmill would become simpatico with the long-running ABC show). Despite that journey ending in heartbreak, Brown eventually found love and is now engaged. Now she’s also ready to embark on a new love story — or, better yet, write one with her debut romance novel, Mistakes We Never Made.
The novel, publishing Tuesday from Forever, an imprint of Hachette Books, centers on protagonists Emma Townsend and Finn Hughes who after almost dating in high school and reuniting in the following years after, don’t necessarily like each other. But when one of...

Actor Julia Roberts has starred in a variety of romance films over the years. Some of her most popular features were a part of the genre. But eventually, Roberts reached a certain age where she felt romance couldn’t be a thing for her.

It’s hard not to think about romantic comedies when Roberts comes to mind. Movies like Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride had been Roberts’ bread and butter for years. But as she’d gotten older, Roberts felt that her time doing romcoms was ending. As she entered her 40s, she didn’t think the scenarios often presented in romcom movies would be believable for someone her age.

Julia Roberts has a confession – another confession. More than 25 years after its release, Roberts has said that My Best Friend’s Wedding is the one movie of hers that she wouldn’t mind revisiting. She even has a vague idea of what audiences could see.

Actor Emma Roberts made a name for herself by starring in projects like Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story. She also shares her last name, and her blood, with another superstar in Julia Roberts. But how are the two connected?
What is Emma Roberts’ relation to Julia Roberts Julia Roberts | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Emma Roberts actually shares a very close connection to the Oscar-winner. Her father is Julia’s brother Eric Roberts, who’s also a prolific actor himself. Both Roberts’ father and aunt inspired her to pursue an acting career. Roberts once recalled being on the set of her aunt’s Erin Brockovich film, and how that grew her passions even further.
“I’d run and hide in her makeup trailer and hear, ‘Where’s Emma? It’s time for bed! She has to go home,'” Roberts once recalled to Allure. “I remember it feeling like summer camp,...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
There are some Cinderella stories in the history of the box office. We can look at something like the ultra-low-budget "Skinamarink" earlier this year, which made more than $2 million after it became a genuine viral conversation starter online. Produced for just $15,000, it's a nice little success story for director Kyle Edward Ball. Such things happen from time to time in defiance of the industry norms. But the biggest Cinderella story of all time, in every sense, happened in 2002 when "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" had a run for the ages on its way to becoming the biggest rom-com ever. Take that, "Runaway Bride."
Even for those who have absolutely no interest in this particular genre, the journey of this movie is unquestionably fascinating.

Stuart McDonald deeply admires Netflix’s first interactive movie Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. He describes the film as a dark journey wherein a viewer’s decisions in a gamer nerd’s life could lead to acid trips, existential torment, suicide, stuffed bunnies, and decapitated heads. But McDonald knows audiences will have a different reaction to the streaming behemoth’s first interactive romantic comedy, which he directed. In Choose Love, audiences wander into the pages of a fan fiction to decide which suitor is best for the film’s career-driven protagonist, Cami...

Back in 2018 with “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,” Netflix introduced interactive features as a way for viewers to take charge of a movie, using a controller to select diverse story paths. The filmmakers offered choices branching off from pivotal points within the narrative that led to a range of conclusions that either worked, eventually triggering the end credits, or didn’t, propelling the viewer back to an earlier point to try again. More programming utilizing this style shortly followed in other genres: the scripted comedy “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend,” the animated special “We Lost Our Human,” and the reality series “Ranveer vs. Wild with Bear Grylls.”
This innovative concept is now applied to the streamer’s growing stable of saccharine-but-sentimental romantic comedy features with “Choose Love.” Director Stuart McDonald (“A Perfect Pairing”) and writer-producer Josann McGibbon (“Runaway Bride”) center their tale on an indecisive career-driven woman who must choose...

It was a magnificent movie weekend. Barbie, Oppenheimer, Sound of Freedom. All hits, a blowout!
So what else have you got?
The question sounds obnoxious, like its near-cousin, the always infuriating: “What have you done for me lately?”
But it’s an honest query, and an important one for a strike-bound, streaming-bent, pandemic-emergent industry that is still in need of revival.
The record-breaking weekend is a wonderful tonic, a welcome reminder that the audience, given half a chance, is still willing. But one weekend, even with the anticipated hold-over business from its hits, doesn’t mean a return to health.
That requires yet more watchable movies, lots of them, preferably offered in quick succession, while the viewers are showing an appetite. And those won’t be easy to come by in a Hollywood that has been shut down by dual strikes — raising the prospect of potential scheduling delays — and is...

Had Katniss Everdeen and the “X-Men” series never gotten in the way — or, had we still lived in an era when superheroes or fantasy franchises were not seen as status symbols on the resume of a young superstar — Jennifer Lawrence would have already starred in numerous rom-coms by now, à la the Julia Roberts of the 90s. Especially after winning the Oscar for one a decade ago, with David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook.”
But better late than never says Gene Stupnitsky’s “No Hard Feelings,” a genuinely witty and somewhat clumsy romantic comedy, that feels more like an honest-to-god movie than many of the rushed and straight-to-streaming examples of the genre we’ve seen in the recent years.
Written by Stupnitsky (of the heartily funny “Good Boys”) and John Phillips, this light pick-me-up of a flick is as eager to please as Lawrence is to show off her luminous physical comedy skills,...

Exclusive: Wheel Of Time execs Ted Field and Rick Selvage are among producers of feature biopic Les Indépendants about American impressionist Mary Cassatt and her relationship with French painter Edgar Degas.
French filmmaker Anaïs Tellenne (From the Big Fire Only the Embers Remain) has been attached to direct. Diah Wymont (costumer on Dick Tracy), inspired by the story of Cassatt forging her own path in the 19th century art world, makes her screenwriting debut after a long career as a costume designer.
The film will chart the story of Cassatt as a young woman with talent and an adventurous spirit striving to make it in Paris where she confronts chauvinism, elitism, art world misogyny, and the ravages of war. She falls in love with renowned artist Edgar Degas [in real life the artistic collaborators were not lovers] and their love and talent challenge the establishment as their fame grows. Ultimately, Cassatt must choose between Degas’ love and her own artistic path.

Before Seinfeld, Jason Alexander had another major claim to fame. He was in the blockbuster movie Pretty Woman. Alexander played Richard Gere’s lawyer. If you didn’t get that he’s sleazy by this point in the movie, he famously slaps Julia Roberts. When it came to the Seinfeld audition, Alexander thought he would lose the role of George Costanza to another Pretty Woman star.

A film about the brutal 1955 racist attack on Emmett Till has been a long time coming. Its director talks about overcoming Hollywood’s reluctance, on-set therapy and her ‘non-negotiables’
In the late 1990s, when the idea of a film about the lynching of Emmett Till was first floated, the woman who would eventually direct it was in high school. Chinonye Chukwu was a depressed, daylight-deprived Alaskan teenager obsessed with Julia Roberts romcoms.
“Obsessed. She had the back-to-back trifecta: Runaway Bride, Notting Hill, My Best Friend’s Wedding,” says the 37-year-old, as she pours herself a cup of herbal tea in her London hotel room. “I would rewrite the film’s story in my journal, and either make myself the protagonist, or somebody else who looked like me … It was my escape, y’know?”...

“Ticket to Paradise,” a romantic comedy that reunites long-time friends and co-stars Julia Roberts and George Clooney, could defy box office odds.
Admittedly, it seems strange to suggest a movie with megawatt talent like Roberts and Clooney could be anything other than a massive triumph. But even in pre-pandemic times, romantic comedies were challenged at the box office. It’s been especially stark in the Covid era; although “The Lost City” with Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum beat expectations with 190 million globally, Billy Eichner’s “Bros” has faced an uphill battle to reach 10.8 million worldwide.
But there’s reason to believe that “Ticket to Paradise” — which lands in North America on Oct. 21 — could be another reminder that romantic comedies haven’t entirely fallen out of favor at the movies. Based on early estimates, the film is expected to debut to roughly 15 million. That’s a respectable start, one that falls...

There are times when Hulu’s 8-episode series “Wedding Season,” premiering on September 8th, plays like a relatively straightforward romantic comedy about two beautiful people who end up crossing paths during a crowded Scottish season of nuptials among mutual friends. However, it’s also a vicious thriller with a pretty high body count that has the tendency to explode in action sequences like it’s suddenly shifted into spy movie territory. The elevator pitch could be “Runaway Bride” meets “The Bourne Legacy” and the ability of creator Oliver Lyttleton and his writers to balance the extreme tones of “Wedding Season” is its greatest accomplishment.

In the summer of 1989, Touchstone Pictures — a subsidiary of Disney — began filming what would go on to become the biggest romantic comedy hit of all-time (at least by total number of tickets sold). It was also the third-highest grossing film of 1990 and catapulted eventual Oscar nominee Julia Roberts to global fame.
The film was, of course, “Pretty Woman,” a formerly dark and gritty tale about a down-and-out sex worker and the rich businessman who hires her for a week.
More than thirty years later, the film remains a high point of both ’90s-era studio filmmaking in general (it’s difficult to picture Disney taking a Sundance Labs script and turning it into a broadly-appealing story about “a hooker with a heart of gold” ever again) and the romantic comedy in particular. It not only established Roberts as a star, but the very concept that — even in a story that hinges on two people mixing,...

Longtime friends and frequent co-stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts toss back shots and break out funky dance moves in “Ticket to Paradise,” a romantic comedy in which they play hostile exes.
Universal Pictures brought a sneak peak of the film — which opens in theaters on Oct. 21 — to CinemaCon, the annual exhibition trade show currently underway in Las Vegas.
The two A-list stars were not on hand at Caesars Palace to promote “Ticket to Paradise,” but movie theater owners in the audience still appeared to be entertained by their on-screen reunion.
Clooney and Roberts play a divorced couple who fly to Bali to stop their lovestruck daughter (played by Kaitlyn Dever) from marrying a man she barely knows. The trailer, which hasn’t been released yet to the public, showcases several funny moments, including Clooney’s character drinking everyone on the island under the table and playing beer pong, which...

Netflix is expanding its interactive content offerings, with the streamer ordering the interactive romantic comedy film “Choose Love” from Josann McGibbon.
The cast includes Laura Marano (“The Royal Treatment”), Avan Jogia (“Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City”), Scott Michael Foster (“You”), and Jordi Webber (“Head High”). McGibbon is the writer and executive producer on the film, with Stuart McDonald directing. Robyn Snyder, Deborah Evans, Mel Turner, Axel Paton serve as producers.
In the film, Cami Conway (Marano) has it all. She’s got the job she wants as a recording engineer and is headed towards engagement, marriage and kids with her wonderful boyfriend, Paul (Foster). And yet, she feels something is missing. Is it just Fomo and the fear of commitment that goes with it? Or is she actually missing out on an even better career, perhaps the long abandoned singing career she once dreamed of? And is Paul the love of her life?...

As viewership of YouTube in the living room continues to grow, the company is getting into the ad-supported longform game, adding 4,000 library TV episodes and 1,500 movies.
The move will give the Google-owned video power more of a profile in the burgeoning AVOD marketplace. Fox, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Disney and WarnerMedia have all either acquired major AVOD services or launched their own, doing battle with Roku, Crackle and a number of others in the space. The focus has come as cord-cutting and smart-tv adoption both continue to shape the entertainment sector.
Advertising has long been the lifeblood of YouTube and its parent company, Alphabet, and the wind has recently been at the company’s back. In the fourth quarter, YouTube reported a 25% year-over-year increase in ad revenue, to $8.6 billion.
Series included in the new set of offerings include Hell’s Kitchen, Andromeda and Heartland. Movies drawn from the libraries of studios like Disney,...
