Exclusive: Jörg Winger and his Sam – A Saxon co-creator Tyron Ricketts believe the time is now right to tell the story of East Germany’s first Black policeman after a near-20-year period of shopping the project.

Disney+’s Sam – A Saxon, which was the streamer’s first German greenlight, spotlights Samuel Meffire, a former bricklayer who became the first elite East German policeman of African descent in the 1980s, where he went from diversity poster boy to being on the wrong side of the law. Ricketts first met Meffire in 2002 and began shopping the project – initially as a feature – with Deutschland 83 co-creator Winger in 2006, but the pair believe German audiences have only become ready for the story in the past couple of years.

The annual London TV Screenings distributor gathering has set dates, with 17 distributors joining founder members All3Media International, Banijay Rights, Entertainment One, Fremantle and ITV Studios from Monday 27 February to March 3. The third event gives numerous distributors the chance to showcase catalogs to buyers via a series of events a few weeks prior to Mip TV in Cannes. Ufa Fiction is partnering with actor-producer Tyron Ricketts and his Berlin-based Panthertainment to produce films and series for the global market focusing on stories from people of color.

Ufa Fiction producer Nataly Kudiabor will work with the Austrian-born Ricketts (right), one of Germany’s most successful black actors, on developing and overseeing projects Panthertainment acquires from directors and writers.

“Tyron and I have known each other for 20 years,” Kudiabor said. “As people of color, we have always dealt with the problem of on-screen representation. We want to give creative people – regardless of their origin or skin color – the opportunity to tell their own stories from their perspectives and we are convinced that we can reach a broad audience with them.”

ITV police drama The Bill is to join forces with its German cop show counterpart Soko Leipzig to mark the show's 25th anniversary. The shows' production houses - talkbackTHAMES and Ufa Fernsehproduktion - will co-produce the venture, creating footage for their respective programmes, while at the same time utilising characters from both. The storyline begins when an 18-year-old German girl called Charlotte (Anna-Maria Mühe) is kidnapped on British soil. Dci Jack Meadows (Simon Rouse) heads up the manhunt with his German equivalent - and godfather of the kidnap victim - Detective Chief Superintendent Hajo Trautzschke (Andreas Schmidt-Schaller).
