Although Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa is best known for his horror films like Cure and Pulse, recent years have seen him operate in more dramatic territory. Kurosawa’s latest outing, Cloud, sees the filmmaker both return to form and push himself in exciting new ways, resulting in one of the most gripping thrillers of the year.
Cloud Review
Cloud follows a young man who makes a living reselling goods online — sometimes not in the most ethical ways — as he finds himself fighting for his life after a series of mysterious events occur. Although this seems like a simple premise, Kurosawa makes the most of it, adding plenty of intrigue to the movie in its just-over-two-hour runtime.

Exclusive: As Deadline reported exclusively in February, the upcoming sixth season of Netflix’s Virgin River, which focuses on Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack’s (Martin Henderson) nuptials, will also feature Mel’s late mother Sarah and biological father, Everett, in flashbacks. We can now reveal that Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr have been cast in the roles and offer first-look images of them as Sarah and Everett in Season 6.
The recurring characters are being introduced as Netflix is exploring an expansion of the Virgin River universe with a prequel following Sarah and Everett’s origin story.
Seen in flashbacks mostly set in or around 1972, Sarah (Rothe) is a witty, free spirit from the big city with an ardent passion for activism, and trying to avoid the conventional/traditional life of a young woman in the ’70s. Always up for an adventure,...

From Italy to Canada and Colorado, the fall festivals unleashed a firehose of new films on the international landscape — the majority of which, as is ever thus, are still looking for buyers.
The Venice, Toronto, and Telluride film festivals all hosted plenty of splashy world premieres that attracted early or quick-to-respond buyers, like A24 with “Queer,” “The Brutalist,” and “Friendship,” TIFF opener “Nutcrackers” (Hulu), “Maria” (Netflix), and “September 5” (Paramount). But there are smaller films — and even some bigger, starrier ones from Naomi Watts in “The Friend” to Jude Law and Ana de Armas in “Eden” — still on the hook for stateside distribution.
While there are still plenty of industry-friendly festivals ahead to help locate buyers, like NYFF and AFI Fest, IndieWire rounds up the best films we saw at the fall fests so far that deserve distribution. Somebody, do something about these 22 titles!

The Criterion Channel’s at its best when October rolls around, consistently engaging in the strongest horror line-ups of any streamer. 2024 will bring more than a few iterations of their spooky programming: “Horror F/X” highlights the best effects-based scares through the likes of Romero, Cronenberg, Lynch, Tobe Hooper, James Whale; “Witches” does what it says on the tin (and inside the tin is the underrated Italian anthology film featuring Clint Eastwood cuckolded by Batman); “Japanese Horror” runs the gamut of classics; a Stephen King series puts John Carpenter and The Lawnmower Man on equal playing ground; October’s Criterion Editions are Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Hunter, Häxan; a made-for-tv duo includes Carpenter’s underrated Someone’s Watching Me!; meanwhile, The Wailing and The Babadook stream alongside a collection of Cronenberg and Stephanie Rothman titles.
Otherwise, Winona Ryder and Raúl Juliá are given retrospectives, as are filmmakers Arthur J. Bressan Jr. and Lionel Rogosin.

Erratic, prolific Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa has, at his best, a peculiar genius for finding strangeness — often malevolence — gathering like dust in the shadowy corners of banal modern life. With “Cloud,” which has just been announced as Japan’s International Oscar submission, the filmmaker gives that impulse a compellingly enigmatic update, turning in an offbeat internet-age drama that devolves into a vengeance actioner so deconstructed it’s almost existentially abstract: Beckett giving it both barrels.
The hinge between the film’s two modes is Yoshii (a terrifically watchable Masaki Suda) who also operates in a double register. In real life a competent, if disengaged menial worker in a clothing factory, online, he goes by the handle “Ratel” and runs a shady reselling racket that is his real focus and his real moneymaker. As “Cloud” begins, Yoshii is inspecting a consignment of “therapy machines” up for quick sale by their desperate manufacturer.

Kurosawa Kiyoshi is a master of sustaining an ineffable kind of eeriness, especially when mounting horror films. His recent Chime, which is only available as a digital token, was so uncommonly disturbing in part for its long and flowing and tightly coiled shots that appeared to explicate everything in the physical space while revealing little emotional or spiritual about the characters. Kurosawa is an empathetic but unsentimental poet of the modern void.
Like Pulse and Chime, Cloud is obsessed with media-stoked alienation, and it benefits mightily from Kurosawa’s formal mastery. For half the film’s runtime, Kurosawa twists one up in dread, with menacing long shots and pregnant pauses that seem to express wells of bitterness. Said dread is intensified by the tricky and digressive narrative. There’s a tension here, consciously stoked, that’s spurred by the question of where the hell this thing is going.

Throughout the years, and at least to the people who do not deal extensively with Vietnamese cinema, the local movie industry was almost exclusively represented by Tran Anh Hung, whose films like “Cyclo”, “The Scent of Green Papaya” and “Vertical Ray of the Sun” are the first that come to the mind of any cinephile. However, the Camera D’or for best first feature film Pham Tien An won at the 76th Cannes Film Festival for “Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell” showed that there might be more to local cinema than the aforementioned director, who did won Best Director for “The Taste of Things”, in a production though, that is exclusively French.
Furthermore as Le Chou wrote in an article published last year in Asian Movie Pulse, “For the first time in modern Vietnam cinema since the establishment of its box office tracking, six local films topped the Vietnam box...

Becoming trapped in a nightmare is the worst. I’m reasonably adept at controlling my dreams, but now and again, the slumber is too strong to shake the dark visions from my mind’s eye. Jessica Rother and Joseph Cross are about to find out what that’s all about when they star in BT Meza’s directorial debut for the sci-fi thriller Affection. Julianna Layne co-stars.
Meza directs Affection from his script. According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Affection tells the story of “Ellie (Rothe), who is stuck in a cyclical nightmare. Grappling with a condition that erratically resets her memory, she’s left unable to remember her husband (Cross) or daughter (Julianna Layne). Each reset leaves her disoriented and haunted with vivid memories of a life she’s never lived.”
Horror fans know Jessica Rothe as Tree Gelbman Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2 U.

Japanese filmmaker Kôji Shiraishi knows his way around a haunt, having established a reputation for scare crafting with documentary-style horror movies Noroi: The Curse, Occult, and A Record of Sweet Murder. The director occasionally showcased his sense of humor, dialing up the camp factor in commercial films like Sadako vs. Kayako. Kôji Shiraishi’s latest, House of Sayuri, splits the difference between serious scares and irreverent horror-comedy. A vengeful ghost doles out shocking violence in this haunted house, with a comically combative grandma standing in its way, making for a tonally disjointed effort as bizarre as that setup suggests.
After a cold open that establishes the haunting’s inciting event, House of Sayuri cuts to the present to introduce the Kamiki family, a tight-knit and cheerful group of seven who’ve just moved into the home, blissfully unaware of its history. The new home comes after years of blood, sweat,...

Editor’s Note: The following story contains spoilers for “Longlegs” and “Cure.”
The oozy, hypnotic dread of “Longlegs” may be scaring up dreams of “Seven” and “The Silence of the Lambs” as a mid-‘90s-set thriller about the games between a serial killer and an FBI agent. But there’s another movie Osgood Perkins’ Nicolas Cage-starrer (now a record-smashing box office hit for Neon) shares a darker kinship with.
That’s Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Cure” from 1997, a gruesome serial killer tour de force the Japanese director himself was inspired by David Fincher’s “Seven” to make. “Cure,” a dripping-with-atmosphere philosophical crime thriller also about a seemingly psychic (and in this case amnesiac) killer a la Cage’s title character in “Longlegs,” stars the great Koji Yakusho as a Tokyo Metropolitan Police detective on the trail of a string of bizarre slayings that defy explanation. Each crime scene finds the killer close by,...

Director Fede Alvarez has said on multiple occasions that Alien: Romulus is a movie that borrows heavily from Alien and Aliens, but that doesn't mean he won't be bringing his own ideas to the table.
During a recent conversation with Total Film (via SFFGazette.com), the filmmaker explained how nature documentaries factored into how he directed the puppeteers responsible for breathing life into the Xenomorphs and, more specifically, the Chestbursters.
"It is done almost like a nature documentary," Alvarez tells the site. "While we were seeing it on set we were joking, [like] 'The creature is coming out slow. It's looking for the scent of the mother...' The creature's not trying to be scary."
"The creature is trying to get the fuck out of that cocoon, that happens to be a person. It's almost like this is more realistic in a way, but without betraying all the beautiful things of the original designs.

Netflix has unveiled the expansion of its Netflix Studios Albuquerque production facility in the southwestern US state of New Mexico.
The expansion adds four new soundstages, three mills, one production office, two stage support buildings and two dedicated backlot areas across 108 acres to the facility, which Netflix acquired in 2018.
The global streamer said the facility also now incorporates several features geared towards sustainability, including on-site solar and battery storage systems, geothermal heating and cooling, all-electric appliances and 50 electric vehicle fast chargers.

Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos cut the ribbon on a major expansion of Netflix Studios Albuquerque and said the facility has racked up nearly $900 million in total investment in New Mexico production since 2019.
The company launched the hub in 2018, marking its first purchase of a production studio complex. This one included eight sound stages on 28 acres with productions that included The Avengers, Breaking Bad, and Sicario. It’s the only complex Netflix owns outside one currently being developed in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.

Updated with exec comments. Blake Chandlee, President, Global Business Solutions at ByteDance / TikTok, kicked off the company’s NewFronts presentation in New York with a thank-you to advertisers and push-back against government critics.
“I want you to know, we are not backing down,” he said. He noted at the outset that he felt it was appropriate to start the event by acknowledging the company’s recent friction with lawmakers and regulators in Washington and elsewhere.
He called a national security bill signed into law last month by President Biden, which includes a stupulation that TikTok to be sold to a U.S.-based owner or face a ban “unconstitutional,” vowing that the company “will challenge it in court.” The remarks echoed those of CEO Shou Chew. In a video posted after the bill was signed, Chew called it “a disappointing moment,” but also affirming, “Rest assured, we are not going anywhere.

Amidst political turmoil in the U.S. and abroad, TikTok addressed brand and agency representatives at the 2024 NewFronts. The ByteDance-owned app delivered a pitch that focused on several of its ad products. It is rolling out new options for its premium Pulse Premiere tier and introducing audience measurement solutions from Nielson One Ads and iSpot.tv.
TikTok’s presentation included new details about Pulse, the ad program it revealed at its NewFronts pitch two years ago. Pulse, which resembles YouTube’s Select program, offers roped-off ad inventory next to a selection of top-performing channels. TikTok’s Pulse partners include prominent creators and publishers, and the app is adding some more notable names to that list. New Pulse signees like Paramount Global and the NHL are joining existing partners like Buzzfeed, Conde Nast, and the NFL.

It’s always fun to discuss horror novels that Aren’T Stephen King. No knock on the monster from Maine, he’s the master of horror novels over the last, oh I don’t know, 50 years, for a reason but its nice to not have the show be solely dedicated to his adapted works. He says knowing that he makes the schedule and decides what books to cover. See you in May, Mr. King! Funnily enough, the man actually loved today’s subject to the degree that he called it one of 2006’s best horror novels, but more on that in a little bit. The Ruins (watch it Here) was one of those hot properties by an author whose previous work was an instant success with critics, fans, and studio executives that put it to celluloid. The book came out and just two years later we were given a movie...

Hayao Miyazaki stands as a luminary in the anime and animation realm, wielding multiple roles – director, producer, scriptwriter, animator, author, manga artist, and Studio Ghibli's co-owner. Reshaping the landscape, he was one of the pioneers of elevating anime beyond teenage audiences. His magnum opus, “Spirited Away,” broke records and became the first anime to win an Oscar. In 2014, he earned an Honorary Academy Award, a testament to his cinematic impact. A prolific storyteller since 1972, Miyazaki, continues to come up with titles that top the category, although his latest one, “The Boy and the Heron” could possibly be his last.

The film that helped birth the Resident Evil franchise, the 1989 Japanese horror Sweet Home is now watch online for free – in 4K. Hurrah!
Most readers will have heard of the Resident Evil videogame franchise or its – shall we say – uneven movie adaptations. Before those, though, there was Sweet Home, a 1989 horror film directed by cult Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa.
Around the time of Sweet Home’s initial release, Capcom made a tie-in videogame – a top-down RPG which contained several of the survival horror elements we associate with the genre today. The makers of that game were none other than Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara – respectively, its director and producer – the pair that would go on to create the original Resident Evil in 1996.
In fact, Resident Evil itself began life as a Sweet Home game before Capcom decided to turn it into an unrelated game instead.

There is no denying that Martin Scorsese stands with some of the finest filmmakers that Hollywood has to offer. With films like The Wolf of Wall Street and Gangs of New York, the Oscar-winning director has been ruling over the hearts of film fanatics since time immemorial. However, despite having uncountable projects to his name, Martin Scorsese has barely touched the Horror genre with his films.
A still from Martin Scorsese’s Bring Out the Dead
Sure, he has touched the subject a few times with Shutter Island, Cape Fear, and Bringing Out the Dead, but Martin Scorsese has never made a full-blown horror movie. Now this doesn’t mean that the filmmaker is not into the genre. In fact, there is one film out there that was so full of dread that it became one of Martin Scorsese’s favorites in the genre.

A deep darkness inhabits Kiyoshi Kurosawa's “Cure”, on a philosophical and literal level. It's a serial killer psychological horror that puts forward the idea that our collective social psyche is susceptible to extreme persuasion, with anyone from the most ordinary person to those with a duty of care to the public being capable of clinical, repetitive, removed violence. It follows Detective Kenichi Takabe (Koji Yakusho) through an incomprehensible mystery where a strange epidemic of hypnosis is convincing unconnected people to attack others and slaughter them by carving a large X from their neck to their chest. At the centre of it is the manipulative, enigmatic Kunio Mamiya (Masato Hagiwara), a drop-out university student with apparent amnesia and a trusty lighter that inexplicably casts a spell on whoever looks into the flame. The case is not open and shut; how the phenomenon began remains mostly a mystery, despite the efforts...

Our Submit Your Film Initiative has been a huge success since its conception back in 2019, with over 400 movies having been submitted and reviewed in Asian Movie Pulse, occasionally featuring in our YouTube channel, either through trailers or even as full movies. A number of films featuring were then picked by festivals or by streaming platforms, cementing the fact that the whole industry is actually following Asian Movie Pulse, particularly for lesser known titles.
In the same path, and in an effort to help the filmmakers that send us their titles even more, we have formed agreements with a number of streaming services around the world, in order to suggest titles that come to us for them to potentially include in their catalogues. Along with our continuing collaboration with Oscar-nominating Vienna Shorts, where we also suggest movies to be picked for the festival, we feel we offer all the creators that...

Horror is iterative, but it just as regularly moves through the same cycles decade after decade, ostensibly breaking new ground, when in reality, the genre is simply doing what is has always done. Today's horror landscape, for as remarkable and diverse as it is, is principally a landscape of legacy sequels. The horror of yesterday is new again, and commonly, old faces and names are dredged up to headline the latest nostalgic bloodbath. Reasonably, the present iteration could be decried as Hollywood's lack of originality, though seasoned horror veterans have seen this cycle before.
The early aughts were replete with imported horrors. Hollywood studios regularly borrowed transnational scares, repackaged them, and presented them as the next big thing. They were successful, too. Gore Verbinski's "The Ring," a remake of Hideo Nakata's "Ring," grossed nearly $250 million when released in 2002. Hollywood studios also remade the likes of "A Tale of Two Sisters,...
