Let's be honest, I'm writing this comment mainly to say that the other reviewer is completely wrong about the characters being like "harlots". I don't know what kind of "harlots" he or she has seen, but the girls in the Dead or Alive game series are nothing like them.
I'll admit, the characters Tina and Lisa could very well be thought of as "harlots" (sorry, I think it's funny that that word is used.) These are the worst two characters in the series, period. They don't fit into the game at all (luckily Lisa is only in the volleyball game.) I would agree that some might be inclined to think that they're slutty, because I'll be honest, they are. I've always assumed that Tina's and now Lisa's sole purpose is to attract a dumb American male audience. This fact, however, should not lead you to the conclusion that they are all like that.
Let's get back to the rest of the characters. Yes, they are curvy and fairly unrealistically shaped, but they are not prostitutes. They wear cute and stylish clothing, even the darker characters. What's, you say? There are dark characters? There's a plot?
Yes, there is quite a plot running throughout the games, which I won't get into. Soul Caliber can not match it. Soul Caliber also can not match the likability of the DOA characters (honestly, I don't think any part of Soul Caliber can come close to the DOA games.) The things the female characters in Soul Caliber wear are just awful.
The volleyball game is for fans of the DOA fighting series who have come to know and like the characters, and probably have a favorite, who they will enjoy playing as in a non-fighting setting. I feel that the other review is very unfair and should not be used as the only basis on which to make your opinion about the game if you don't know anything about it.
If you liked the DOA fighting games at all you owe it to yourself to at least rent this game, and build your own opinion about the characters. It's a lot of fun, and a good break from other more intense games you probably play, without being easy at all. And it's not just for guys who want to look at girls on the screen. Girls will definitely like it too.
In the end, it's a light-hearted game that will provide fun and enjoyment if you let it, especially if you already like the characters from the fighting games in the series.
As an ending note: if the characters from DOA really were put in a Grand Theft Auto sort of environment, they'd destroy everybody that got in their way.
