When you think about TV in February, it’s usually: Super Bowl and the Oscars. But there’s plenty going in between the universe’s last two monocultural events: Showtime brings a pair of inimitable personalities to late night; IFC panders to the documentary geeks with a new season of a certified cult hit; and HBO takes a long, hard look at prison life in America. Meanwhile, ABC and NBC will compete for a slice of the action procedural pie, and Elvis Presley will receive a reverent tribute from the...

Life Coach: Mills’ Debut a Showcase for Own Multi-talents
Toronto based filmmaker Pat Mills makes his directorial debut with Guidance, a dark hearted comedy that gets a lot of traction from exaggerated, inappropriate behavior draping its endearing core. Aping the hook of Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2003), Mills manages to surpass David Spade’s limitations with a basic premise that has a myriad of possibilities, and, as far as comedies hinged on adults behaving badly goes, Mills’ film works on a variety of entertaining levels. Director, screenwriter, and star, his strongest asset happens to be himself in an entertaining performance that is as unabashedly off-putting as it is strangely empathetic. His onscreen persona manages to help us overlook some of the film’s minor sleights to the development of supporting characters necessary for the attempted third act pathos. Nevertheless, this is an impressionable first feature, one deserving of attention as...

While Chandra Wilson might be in limbo for the next season of Grey's Anatomy, she's not going anywhere out of the spotlight. Starting today, she'll be playing Matron Mama Morton on the Broadway production of Chicago, a role made famous in the film version by Queen Latifah.
Wilson recently spoke to The Advocate about her new role and what could be coming up for Callie and Arizona on Grey's:
On Mama Morton's butch qualities:
When someone new takes over a role, the company doesn't change anything from the script, but they do lay it all out there and let people take from it what they take from it. So sometimes, depending on who's playing Mama, it might sound crazy calling Mama butch. I decided that I'll give Mama her look, her walk, and her demeanor, and then I'll let the words fall where they fall.

Country songs sure can tell stories. Now TV production company Granada America wants to make some of those stories into a series of one-hour TV dramas.
The film-producing duo of Mark Roberts and Lorena David ("Strangers With Candy," "Extreme Dating") pitched the project to Granada and will executive produce it with veteran music supervisor Joel C. High of Creative Control Entertainment. Dubbed "American Storytellers," the series will have access to least seven songs from Sony/Atv Music Publishing as well as works by other publishers to be named.
"We have worked with them for upwards of two years to find the right songs for the project," Sony/Atv Nashville president Troy Tomlinson said. "The music was to be the driving force behind the series."
The music publisher boasts a formidable country catalog that includes classics by Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and Roger Miller as well as recent hits by Taylor Swift,...

Warner Indpendent Pictures sweet on 'Candy'
PARK CITY -- Warner Independent Pictures acquired its second film of the 2005 Sundance Film Festival on Thursday as it picked up Strangers With Candy, starring comedian Amy Sedaris. The film, in which Sedaris plays an ex-con who returns to high school after 32 years in jail, couldn't be more different from WIP's first acquisition, the penguin documentary The Emperor's Journey. In other acquisitions action late Thursday, Samuel Goldwyn Films and Roadside Attractions acquired domestic rights to the provocative high school comedy Pretty Persuasion, starring Evan Rachel Wood and James Woods, for something less than $1 million. WIP purchased North American rights to Strangers, produced by David Letterman's Worldwide Pants production company and Lorena David and Mark Roberts of Roberts/David Films. The brainchild of Sedaris, Paul Dinello and Stephen Colbert, Strangers With Candy began as a cult television show on Comedy Central. Dinello directed the feature film.

The Vine: Broderick, Parker sweet on 'Candy'
Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker aren't afraid of Strangers With Candy. The couple have agreed to star in a feature film based on the Comedy Central series, their respective reps have confirmed. Their attachment comes as a result of a close friendship with Amy Sedaris, the co-creator and star of the cult series. There is no formal deal for Broderick and Parker, and it is still unclear what characters they will be playing. Filming of the project, which is being produced by Mark Roberts and Lorena David, is set to start in June in New York City. The Strangers With Candy show starred Sedaris alongside fellow co-creators Paul Dinello and Stephen Colbert and aired for three seasons on Comedy Central beginning in 1999. It is a dark satire of moralistic afterschool specials starring Sedaris as Jerri, a frumpy and unattractive outcast who returned to high school after 30 years of hard living on the streets and in prison. However, the rough times don't end at school as, while trying to shed her immoral past, she's forced to mix and mingle with kids who are hipper, more beautiful and more popular than she is. Sedaris, Dinello and Colbert are writing the script with a director to be announced shortly. Sedaris previously teamed with Parker on Sex and the City, playing Carrie Bradshaw's editor. Broderick is repped by CAA and 3 Arts Entertainment. Parker is repped by CAA.
