“Oh, shit!” Dave Bayley exclaims. His blue eyes are wide as he holds his head with both hands. The Glass Animals frontman has just heard some great news from his publicist, who confirms that the U.K. band’s hit song, “Heat Waves,” is officially RIAA diamond certified, representing 10 million sales and streaming units. Bayley blinks rapidly and sputters in disbelief, trying to think of what to say next in his Zoom with Rolling Stone. “I don’t quite know what to make of it!” he adds.

The Fantastic Four is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe films in years. With so many iconic heroes and villains in the roster to choose from, there’s so much potential. Now we know John Malkovich will be joining the cast.
Per Deadline, Malkovich has officially joined the cast of Marvel’s upcoming movie about the superpowered team. The Oscar-nominated actor gives us some hope that the much-anticipated MCU flick won’t be another dud.
So, what role will Malkovich play? We know it’s not Galactus. If we’re going strictly by looks, the versatile actor could easily bring the creepy Puppet Master to life.
We know The Fantastic Four will probably stay true to Marvel’s classic version of the family. So, bringing in a villain as whacky as a guy who can control others via puppets isn’t a stretch.

John Malkovich has joined Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four” in an undisclosed role, Variety has confirmed. The veteran actor joins Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Marvel’s First Family, along with Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal, a version of the Silver Surfer, and Paul Walter Hauser.
Malkovich has brought his uniquely off-kilter acting style to bear in a prolific career spanning costume drama (like 1988’s “Dangerous Liasons”), studio thrillers (1993’s “In the Line of Fire”), cutting edge indies (1999’s “Being John Malkovich”), wackadoo sci-fi comedies (2005’s “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”) and animated family films (2014’s “Penguins of Madagascar”). Most recently, he has appeared in the Apple TV+ series “The New Look” and the Netflix series “Ripley.”

The 90s has a not-entirely unearned reputation as a bit of a dead zone for television sci-fi outside of the USA – especially in the UK. However, the truth is that the 90s was actually something of a golden age. It’s just that in Britain, this golden age happened exclusively between 3:25 pm, when everyone got off school, and 5:30 pm, when everyone watched Neighbours. These homegrown and Australian shows ran the entire gamut of what science fiction could do, from hilarity to terror.
The budgets were low, the special effects had a short shelf life and most of them are now almost impossible to find outside of the memories of some nostalgic Millennials, but they introduced an entire generation to the sci-fi genre, as well as to some banging theme tunes.

Star Trek is one of best and most well-known science fiction franchises of all time, so it’s no surprise that it’s had a huge influence on the rest of the genre. From other space-faring adventures to distant worlds to straight up parodies of the Enterprise and its crew, there are plenty of shows and movies that owe a bit to Gene Roddenberry‘s creation.
This is not a list of every single show or film that has been inspired by Star Trek because that list would cover a pretty good proportion of sci-fi on screen since 1966. But if you want to watch something Star Trek-adjacent, we’ve picked out 10 of our favorite shows and movies that were, to a greater or lesser degree, inspired by Star Trek.

Back in 1998, BBC 2 ran a Red Dwarf Night featuring interviews with celebrity fans, one of whom was Patrick Stewart.

A micro-budget and scrappy energy add charm to this quirky sci-fi tale in which unremarkable people watch over their charges
Peter (Scott Haran) is a former child chess prodigy who these days excels at nothing much in particular, except perhaps his ability to blend into the background. A birthday card at his office is handed to him to sign – for his own birthday. None of his colleagues know who he is, and the card is crammed with polite, anodyne messages. But he discovers that there’s one arena in which his anonymity might be a boon rather than a liability: he is recruited into the world of Bystanding, a parallel universe filled with invisible guardian types whose job is to imperceptibly guide or nudge their charges into making better life choices. They are all, in their own ways, as unremarkable as Peter, hence their selection for bystander duty.

Isaac Asimov is considered one of the biggest science fiction minds of the 20th century, along with authors like Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote hundreds of books, including his highly influential "Robot" and "Foundation" series. These shaped many of the sci-fi stories of today, establishing familiar tropes like the galactic empire, and robots being programmed to be unable to harm humans.
Books like "Dune" and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" owe a lot to Asimov, as do movies like "Star Wars." And yet, Asimov wasn't exactly the biggest sci-fi fan out there, at least not in TV and film. In an interview with the L.A. Times in 1988, Asimov simply described the "Star Trek" films, "Planet of the Apes" and "Back to the Future" as "decent." Asimov even wrote an essay for TV Guide that criticized "Star Trek" and its take on science -- though he...

Paul Noble, the London-born executive who spent the past eight years with Sony Pictures Entertainment, the last three as the studio’s co-head of global theatrical marketing, has died. He was 51.
Noble died Sept. 9 at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles after a two-year battle with bulbar Als, an Spe spokesperson announced.
“Paul was a rare and marvelous human being, possessed with an abundance of positivity, warmth, humor and kindness,” Spe Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman wrote in a note to employees. “He faced his diagnosis with courage and grace and in doing so set a remarkable example for his family and, indeed, for all of us.
“To say he will be missed is, of course, an understatement. But his memory will surely be cherished by anyone lucky enough to have known him.”
In July 2019, Noble and Andre Caraco were promoted to co-presidents of global marketing at Sony.

Emily Deschanel and her sister, Zooey Deschanel, have been gracing our screens for years, but did you know that success in Hollywood has been in the family for generations?

Artificial Intelligence is a big sticking point in the current Hollywood strikes. Author and actor Stephen Fry understands why, as he’s been victimized by an AI version of his voice being used in a documentary without his participation.
Speaking at the CogX Festival in London on Thursday, Fry played a clip of an AI system mimicking his voice to narrate a historical documentary.
“I said not one word of that—it was a machine. Yes, it shocked me,” he said. “They used my reading of the seven volumes of the Harry Potter books, and from that dataset an AI of my voice was created and it made that new narration.”
Fry was the narrator on the Harry Potter books in the UK.

There were a lot of things about "Star Wars: Episode VI -- The Return of the Jedi" that gave fans closure for the trilogy. The second Death Star was blown up. The Emperor (Ian McDiarmid) was defeated. Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) finally admitted their feelings and kissed. We also found out that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Leia were siblings and saw Darth Vader redeemed and unmasked before his death. That last one might have been wonderful for fans, but for David Prowse, who did all the physical work for the role (with the voice of James Earl Jones replacing his own), it was a disappointment.
That is according to an interview with Prowse with Rock Cellar Magazine in 2012. The actor, who passed away at the age of 85 in 2020, had been a bodybuilder, helped train Christopher Reeve for his 1978 "Superman" role, and appeared in projects like "A Clockwork Orange,...

Zooey Deschanel has been in the public eye for nearly three decades, and she's accomplished quite a bit in her lifetime. She made her film debut in the 1999 film "Mumford," but arguably became well-known after starring in the beloved 2003 Christmas flick "Elf." Following her success from "Elf," Deschanel appeared in a number of popular movies throughout the remainder of the 2000s, including "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," "Yes Man," and the indie rom-com "500 Days of Summer" alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Film is not the only place Deschanel is popular, however. She is also well-known for her role as Jessica Day in the sitcom "New Girl" and for being one half of the music duo She & Him. Currently, she hosts a cooking show on Max called "What Am I Eating?" and stars as Kelly in the third season of AppleTV+'s "Physical."

He’d have some stories about the BBC’s The League of Gentlemen – perhaps letting us in on the secret of what exactly is Hilary Briss the butcher’s “special stuff” added ingredient. He could let you know what it’s like being Sherlock Holmes’ older brother Mycroft (and what their parents were thinking when they were dishing out forenames), after starring in and co-writing four series of Sherlock with Steven Moffat. Gatiss has also appeared in Game of Thrones and written and acted in multiple episodes of Doctor Who, playing...

One thing Douglas Adams taught us in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is this: Dolphins usually know what's up when it comes to visitors from outer space. They're ahead of the curve at the beginning of "Cocoon," too, which opens with the friendly marine mammals frolicking in a sunken city before witnessing strange lights beaming through the clouds.
Ron Howard's fourth feature shares similarities with "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," although the beats are different. Its focus is on a group of seniors hitching a ride with friendly aliens to avoid illness and mortality, rather than a guy who is quite happy leaving his kids behind for a fantastic UFO journey. It's one of that '80s micro-genre of sci-fi movies centering around elderly actors, which Steven Spielberg had a big hand in. "Kick the Can," his segment in "Twilight Zone: The Movie," followed a group of...

"Mrs. Davis," the new Peacock series by Damon Lindelof ("Lost") and Tara Hernandez ("The Big Bang Theory"), starts off like the kind of dream you couldn't explain even if you tried. First, there's an order of nuns in the year 1307, locked in a bloody battle with men on the hunt for the Holy Grail. Then, a man on a desert island is rescued, only to be told a rather maternal-sounding algorithm has taken over the world. Next, another weird and bloody scene plays out on the Nevada freeway, only to be interrupted by Simone (Betty Gilpin), a modern-day nun with a penchant for magic tricks. All of this unfolds in the first few minutes of the pilot episode — before we even know who our protagonist is.
The show eventually finds its own absurd inner logic, but its sweeping, funny, deeply strange story never quite shakes the quality of a vivid and endless dream.

The late author Douglas Adams succinctly wrote in his 1979 novel "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," that, "Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space." Adams wrote science fiction stories with the vastness of time and the cosmos in mind, albeit for a comedic effect. In one of his novels, characters could travel forward in time to the very end of the universe and find that a restaurant had opened near the point of universal collapse so that the wealthy could witness it as part of an evening's light dinner entertainment (repeat visits were possible through a complicated temporal something-or-other). For Adams, the infinity of time and space was fodder for humor, as he would insert the mundane into any potential moments of awe.

In space, no one can hear you grumble about your s****y job. The title sequence for "Red Dwarf" opens with a guy in a grubby spacesuit, miserably daubing paint on the exterior of the eponymous mining vessel. When the camera pulls back we can see why he's unhappy; he is working on the "F" of the ship's name which must be about 80 feet high.
It could be a scene from "Dark Star" or "Alien," two movies that showed us that space travel will be pretty boring and arduous for the regular Joes who keep the lights on during long hauls between the stars. Those films provided inspiration for "Red Dwarf" writers Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, who set their cult British show on a spaceship three million years in the future. Only one of its characters is a living human, but that doesn't stop them from following the classic...

It's never a bad time to remember the late, great Alan Rickman. After all, films like "Dogma," "Galaxy Quest," and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" are excellent movie night picks all year round. However, it's especially hard not to think about the actor around the holiday season as he stars in two fan-favorite Christmas staples: "Die Hard" and "Love Actually." With the latter celebrating a milestone anniversary this year, it's the perfect time to revisit Richard Curtis' beloved British ensemble picture that reminds us that love is all around us.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of the classic holiday rom-com, ABC News put together a special titled "The Laughter & Secrets of Love Actually: 20 Years Later." Diane Sawyer sits down with members of the cast and crew to reminisce, revealing some untold stories from the film. And when it comes to discussing Rickman's role in the story, the writer...

The so-called Hunters discover that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials are living in the United States and are conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in America. The Nazi hunters, led by Pacino, will embark on a bloody quest to bring the Nazis to justice and thwart their genocidal plans. Alan Rickman's iconic performance as Severus Snape is a highlight of the Harry Potter movies, and it's difficult to imagine the role without the late actor. But new excerpts from his journals published in The Guardian on Sept. 24 reveal that he nearly left the series due to health concerns.
In 2005, just before the beginning of production on the fifth movie, "The Order of the Phoenix," Rickman was diagnosed with prostrate cancer and began treatment. Eventually, his entire prostate was removed. After his release, Rickman wrote in his journal that he had been going back and forth on whether to return to the screen as the misanthropic potions professor. "Finally, yes to Hp 5," he wrote. "The sensation is neither up nor down. The argument that wins is the one that says: 'See it through. It's your story.'"

Excerpts from Alan Rickman’s diaries published by The Guardian offer a glimpse into the late actor’s decade-long journey through the “Harry Potter” franchise, with insight into why he decided to continue playing the role of Severus Snape across all eight films.
Prior to production beginning on the series’ fifth entry “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” Rickman was forced to confront health issues. The actor was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer in 2005 and began to receive treatment. Doctors later decided to remove his entire prostate, with surgery occurring at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. in January of the following year.
Weeks after he was released from the hospital, Rickman wrote an entry in his journal revealing his decision to stay on as the notorious gloomy potions professor.

This The Sandman review contains No Spoilers and is based on all 10 episodes of the first season of the show.
After decades of failed or blocked film adaptations of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, Netflix has finally broken through with a new 10-episode series, released on Aug. 5.
And it was all worth the wait. The Sandman is spectacular.
The series, adapted for television by Allan Heinberg, David Goyer, and Gaiman himself, follows Dream of the Endless as he is captured by a human warlock and held in captivity for 100 years. He escapes captivity and returns to his realm, The Dreaming, to rebuild and reorient himself, and that process leads to personal growth and deeper relationships with his subjects and his siblings.
Adapting a comic as visually striking and inventive as The Sandman was always going to be complicated. The list of artists who worked on the comics is a laundry...

Good news for all you Brolin-heads! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by one very intriguing TV project starring Thanos himself.

Also on the TV side of things this month is season 2 of the beautifully rotoscoped series Undone on April 29. Rosa Salazar returns as Alma, a woman who may have become unstuck in time to help save her scientist father’s life. Before that, the British TV series The Outlaws makes its debut...

Yasiin Bey, the musician formerly known as Mos Def, will portray jazz piano legend Thelonious Monk in the biopic “Thelonious,” which is slated to begin production in the summer of 2022. The project is being brought to the screen by Jupiter Rising Film and its co-founders, Alberto Marzan and Peter Lord Moreland.
Moreland will also write the screenplay for the film, which “will center around [Monk’s] struggles for musical success, mental illness and the spiritual love triangle between his wife Nellie and one of the world’s richest women, Nica Rothschild,” according to a statement.
“This role is one that requires great depth and a unique understanding of who and what Thelonious Monk was and how his lasting impact can still be heard throughout the music world today,” said Marzan. “The moment I met Yasiin, I knew we found our Thelonious. It’s an honor to be the first to tell this...

“I had a writers’ room in L.A., so the first and third week of the month I was Zooming into it already from here.” His 500-square-foot bungalow, built separately from his house, is where he wrote “probably all of [‘Fargo’] Season 4,” as well as his upcoming novel “Anthem.”
He also has an editing bay in the space. When the pandemic hit, he realized he’d be taking meetings and attending virtual events and award shows, in addition to working on the show there, so he spruced things up a little bit.
