"It's the essence of flirting." So how do you refresh and revitalize the romantic comedy genre? That's what I was hoping to find out from Canadian director Michael Dowse, the man behind the excellent film What If. I first saw this film at last year's Tiff 2013, and loved it, ranking it as one of my 5 favorite films of that festival. It was known as The F Word back then (and still is in Canada) but was retitled to What If for its Us release, which is something I had to ask him about. What If stars Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan as a young couple perfect for each other–their chemistry was a topic, too. View the full video interview below. Michael Dowse is also the director of the films Fubar, Fubar: Balls to the Wall, It's All Gone Pete Tong and Goon with Seann William Scott. If you've seen any of those films,...

After 14 years reporting from the red carpet, our film diarist bids farewell with a selection of glilttering memories…
Best festival
Trash was born at Cannes in 1999, when the idea struck me that the best way to cover this polymorphously perverse festival was through a diary. So it's probably in that environment that my column has thrived most. It coincided with the rise of the "festival circuit", and I was fortunate to have the willing co-operation of the Observer and the festivals themselves in getting to cover so many of them.
I still recall the jolt of a morning vodka with Alan Parker in Moscow where, because his Pink Floyd film The Wall was the most famous bootleg of the Soviet era, he is some kind of deity. Marrakech is a wonderful setting for a film festival and I shall cherish an afternoon with Martin Scorsese there, even though he spilt...

Perhaps understandably, the news that Nicolas Winding Refn's much loved 1996 debut, Pusher, was getting a British remake caused a few fans' feathers to be ruffled – but this exclusive clip of Richard Coyle's take on Frank may change some of their minds.Bostered by the brand new Orbital soundtrack, it's a foot chase that sees the one-time Coupling/Prince Of Persia star hurtling through a London park with a bag of drugs that he doesn't want taken from him. brightcove.createExperiences();What he ends up doing with it you'll have to find out for yourself, but the shakey cam and impressive music should give you an idea of Spanish director Luis Prieto's take on the story of dealer vs. drug lord vs. the world. As you'll see from the trailer below, it also stars Paul Kaye (It's All Gone Pete Tong) Bronson Webb (Game Of Thrones) and supermodel Agyness Deyn as Flo,...

Canadians came out swinging at the box office this weekend, showing some serious love for the brawling hockey comedy Goon, starring Seann William Scott as the titular elbow-throwing enforcer in the R-rated flick co-starring, written and produced by homegrown talent Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg (Seth Rogen's bestie and go-to writing partner), based on the book "Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey."
The Alliance Films release beat out Hollywood competition in the form of Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston comedy Wanderlust, the Amanda Seyfried mystery Gone and Navy Seals actioner Act of Valor to score the number one spot over the weekend to the tune of $1.2 million, a rare boon for a Canadian movie.
Goon follows Doug, a bouncer who stumbles his way onto the ice when it becomes clear his size and force would make him a great enforcer. Directed by Michael Dowse (Fubar,...

Are you a fan of "Drive"? Well, if you are, and you haven't yet tracked down Nicolas Winding Refn's crackling debut "Pusher" (or its two sequels), then you probably should. At least before the remake hits. That's right, in case you forgot, Vertigo Films is doing an English language version of the movie, which is technically the second remake of the film following a Hindi iteration that was made a while ago. This time around the cast is led by model-turned-actress Agyness Deyn (she was Aphrodite in "Clash Of The Titans"), Richard Coyle ("Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time"), Bronson Webb ("Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides") and Paul Kaye ("It's All Gone Pete Tong") the story is pretty much a carbon copy of the first, except this time set in London. And lest you think this is some kind of unholy retread, Refn is actually one...

1996: Number 30 in our series of the 50 key events in the history of dance music
Being live, collective and usually drug-enhanced, the "rave" experience has never been easy to replicate on film. But wherever there's a ramshackle youth movement, there's a clueless cash-in and, as with 60s psychedelia, Hollywood got it entertainingly wrong more often than it got it right (two words: Matrix Reloaded). Two exceptions were Doug Liman's Go (featuring Katie Holmes, Sarah Polley and Scott Wolf), which had fun with the La warehouse party scene, and Blade, whose great bloody opening (to the Pump Panel Reconstruction Mix of New Order's Confusion, trackspotters) was the last word in clubbing exclusivity. For once, the Brits knew best.
Danny Boyle's Trainspotting was ostensibly the first rave generation film, in attitude at least, though apart from Underworld's Born Slippy, the soundtrack was pretty rock-based. Instead, prime contender for...

Piranha 3Dd has one more potential victim: Katrina Bowden, who plays the equally tiny, hot and self-absorbed assistant Cerie on 30 Rock, is now part of the cast. I don't think I need to run down all the obvious potential perks of this casting for fans of her character on that show. I mean, we don't need to get all lascivious here. But yes, she'll be better to look at than David Koechner. The film also features Gary Busey, Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, Meagan Tandy, Paul James Jordan, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Hector Jimenez, Adrian Martinez, and Clu Gulager, and is shooting now in North Carolina. Still waiting to hear about the porn starlets that will be cast; Piranha has a reputation to maintain, after all. After the break, the rather inexplicable remake of Nicolas Winding Refn's great crime movie Pusher gets a remake cast, and an endorsement from Mr Refn.

This Saturday night, February 19th, "Being Human" returns to BBC America with Episode 1 of season three, and if you just can't wait for its debut, here are the first five minutes during which Mitchell enters Purgatory to look for Annie but finds himself amidst the ruins of his own past sins...
Being Human, BBC America’s original hit supernatural series about a group of friends trying to live normal lives despite their unusual afflictions, is back – and, says creator and writer, Toby Whithouse, "It is, without doubt, our best season yet.”
“A third season is a unique opportunity because it allows you to take all the best bits of season one and season two," he says. "What we took from season one is the domestic element and very strong stories of the week with very strong guest characters. Season two had much more of an epic sweep and a breadth of ambition.

My two year wait to see Take Me Home Tonight(formerly known as Kids in America), the "night on the town" retro comedy, is nearly over as I'll be checking it out tomorrow afternoon. Starring Topher Grace, Anna Faris, and Dan Fogler, the film was directed by Michael Dowse(It's All Gone Pete Tong) and written by two of the writers of That 70s Show. We've had the trailer up on the site for awhile...

Our British brethren got some good news this week as BBC Three finally unveiled the release date for "Being Human" Series 3: Sunday 23rd January 2011. To celebrate, we have some new character photos along with a video of Sinead Keenan (Nina) providing a tour of "Honolulu Heights" - the quartet's new digs.
From the "Being Human" Blog: Mitchell, George, and Nina are all Back. And Annie... well, we can only hope.
This year's series is set to be better than ever, with the awesome foursome moving over the border to Wales in an effort to escape their past and start a new life. But things are never simple, and Mitchell's first job is to venture into purgatory and rescue Annie before she gets sent to hell.
But it's not just the amazing storylines we're looking forward to; there are also the guest stars to consider, including Lacey Turner (Eastenders), Robson Green...

Saregama Films announces an August 2011 release for their new motion picture "Soundtrack", the official remake of the award-winning, cult film 'It's All Gone Pete Tong'.
The film being directed by debutant Neerav Ghosh unites Rajeev Khandelwal and Soha Ali Khan for the first time, in what could be their most challenging roles ever.
The film also stars Mrinalini Sharma, Mohan Kapur, Yateen Karyekar, musicians Sidd Coutto, Ankur Tewari, and Anurag Kashyap in a very special role.
Soundtrack is an edgy, modern day portrayal spanning the life story of India's most prolific musician and DJ. It traces his alcohol, drug and sex fueled meteoric rise, as he battles his internal demons and a damaging handicap.
The film has already begun production and has completed its Bangkok schedule in December 2010.
Music for the film is scored by the 'Midival Punditz' & Karsh Kale musicians with a global following and huge worldwide appeal.

The Factory
Opens: 2011
Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger
Director: Morgan O'Neill
Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.
Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".
Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King...

So. Why the hell am I writing about a 1980's set romantic comedy starring Topher Grace and Anna Faris here in Twitch? Simple. Because Take Me Home Tonight happens to be directed by Michael Dowse, the man behind the camera for It's All Gone Pete Tong and the Fubar films. And in my not particularly humble opinion Dowse is one of the great underappreciated talents in the film world, a truly great comedy director who could probably be the next John Hughes if he wanted to and didn't have such an obstinate indie streak in him.
I like Michael Dowse.
And, for that matter, Topher Grace is a hell of a lot better than he usually gets credit for, too.
So, this is Dowse's kick at the big time, the most clearly commercial film he has ever been involved with. Will it bounce him up a notch on the food chain?...

Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Relativity Media's "Take Me Home Tonight" comedy opens on March 4th next year. The Michael Dowse ("It's All Gone Pete Tong") film stars Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler, Teresa Palmer, Michelle Trachtenberg, Michael Biehn, Lucy Punch and Nathalie Kelley. Jackie and Jeff Filgo penned the screenplay from the story by Grace and Gordon Kaywin. Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh produces alongside Ryan Kavanaugh, Jim Whitaker and Sarah Bowen. As the summer of 1988 winds down, three friends on the verge of adulthood attend an out-of-control party in celebration of their last night of unbridled youth. Starring Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler and Teresa Palmer, "Take Me Home Tonight" is a raunchy, romantic and ultimately touching blast from the past set to an awesome soundtrack of timeless rock and hip-hop hits.

[1] Relativity Media and Imagine Entertainment have finally released a movie trailer for the long-delayed dramedy Take Me Home Tonight (previously titled Kids in America). Directed by Michael Dowse (Goon, Fubar, It's All Gone Pete Tong), the story follows "an aimless college grad who pursues his dream girl at a wild Labor Day weekend party. He, his twin sister and their best friend struggle with their burgeoning adulthood over the course of the night." The movie's cast includes Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler, Teresa Palmer, MichelleTrachtenberg, Michael Biehn, Chris Pratt, Lucy Punch, Michael Ian Black, and Demetri Martin. The project shot in late 2006/early 2007, and has been completed for over three years now, sitting on the shelf. I usually am a sucker for teen comedy adventures which take place over the course of one night, but this seems a bit generic (or maybe just dated at this point?). Watch the...

Ah, Suncoast Video. The one-time suburban staple of home video rentals is no more, but it lives on in "Take Me Home Tonight" a 1988-set comedy that seems to giving a big, huge nod to the '80s films of John Hughes. Directed by Michael Dowse ("Fubar," "It's All Gone Pete Tong") the film chronicles the events of one crazy night in 1988 when Matt (Topher Grace) bluffs his way into a massive end-of-summer party where he hopes to impress his high school crush Tori (Teresa Palmer). It looks like it could be decent fun even if the premise seems like…...

Cinematical is happy to exclusively premiere the first poster for 'Take Me Home Tonight,' a new comedy from Canadian director Michael Dowse ('Fubar,' 'It's All Gone Pete Tong,' 'Fubar II: Gods of Blunder'). Previously titled 'Kids in America,' Dowse's film is a period piece comedy set in the '80s* starring Anna Faris, Topher Grace, Dan Fogler, Michelle Trachtenberg and Teresa Palmer as a gang of 20-somethings who have one last screw-everything party before the onset of adulthood in the '90s. That's just the short of it, though, here's the long, official synopsis:
