Since making his acting debut in a 1989 episode of the NBC cop drama "In the Heat of the Night," Walton Goggins has been a most welcome presence on screens big and small. He first popped as police detective Shane Vendrell in the electrifying FX series "The Shield," and won our hearts as the scarily charming criminal Boyd Crowder over six brilliant seasons of FX's "Justified." We also love him as Baby Billy Freeman on "The Righteous Gemstones," and were blown away by his portrayal of The Ghoul on "Fallout." Goggins has been in some bad movies over the years (e.g. "American Ultra" and "Cowboys & Aliens"), but he certainly wasn't bad in them. The man seems wholly incapable of giving a bum performance.
Given that Goggins has become a favorite of filmmaker Quentin Tarantino since appearing in "Django Unchained," is it too much to hope that, whenever the director...

Actor Harrison Ford has been pretty picky about his roles over the years, carefully choosing roles that suit his cocky charm, but he hasn't always made perfect choices. While the actor has dozens of truly great movies under his belt, he also has a few stinkers, like historical submarine thriller "K-19: The Widowmaker" and utopia-building drama "The Mosquito Coast," though Ford has rather thoroughly defended both. There's one box office bomb that he hasn't been as effusive about, however, in large part because he was admittedly never on the film's wavelength.
The 2011 sci-fi action western "Cowboys & Aliens" had all of the ingredients for major blockbuster box office success. Based on Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's 2006 Platinum Studios graphic novel of the same name, "Cowboys & Aliens" was directed by Jon Favreau, fresh off the success of the first two "Iron Man" films. Glen Powell has mastered the art of embodying the charming leading man. 2023's "Anyone But You" — a rom-com loosely based on William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" — was a surprise mega-hit that helped fast-track Powell and his co-star Sidney Sweeney's careers. Since then, Powell has co-written and starred in Richard Linklater's "Hit Man," where the actor showcased his magnetic star power in impressively entertaining vignettes. The more recent "Twisters," a sequel to the '90s blockbuster "Twister," also saw Powell playing the charismatic lead, in this case the meteorologist and storm chaser Tyler Owens (who's cheekily dubbed the Tornado Wrangler).
Even when Powell isn't donning the leading man suit, he is unforgettable, like in "Top Gun: Maverick," in which he played the skilled but cocky Hangman, a rival to Miles Teller's Rooster. A quick look at the actor's filmography makes it clear that his superstardom is hard-earned.

Hollywood star Olivia Wilde warns social media and the embrace of fame pose an existential threat to filmmaking as a storytelling art.
“Directors have to decide at a certain point do you want to be a celebrity or an artist. Because of social media, it’s becoming even more combined to something that is quite dangerous for the art form.,” Wilde said while taking part in an informal conversation at the Red Sea Film Festival on Saturday.
“When you conflate filmmaking or acting with large scale acceptance, you immediately cut off every opportunity to do any risky work. So it was important to me to never become overly focused on being accepted or loved,” she added.
To get away from the Hollywood bubble, the actor-turned-director told the Red Sea Film event she remains inspired by film from far-flung countries not dominated by social media and clichés. “I’m so interested...

Between movies and series episodes, I’ve probably seen a few thousand westerns. Some have crossed over with sci-fi and the supernatural, like Cowboys & Aliens, Jonah Hex or a number of totally forgettable flicks pitting cowpokes against vampires, zombies or other things that go bump in the night. This low-budget affair, The Ghosts Of Red Ridge, breaks a bit of new ground… more uniquely, perhaps, than laudably.
Red Ridge is a dusty, nowhere little town of dashed hopes. It was founded on the promise of a gold rush that never materialized, leaving a handful of bored residents with nowhere better to go. Even the local outlaw gang that harasses the folks can’t rustle up enough loot to make a decent living. The sheriff (Owen Williams) and his deputy (Trent Culkin – apparently no relation to the other...

The two most expensive Western movies ever made were also massive box office flops, and there's a fairly simple reason why. Low budgets are almost baked into the Western genre, all that a good Western needs is a few talented actors, natural scenery, intense gunfights, and a well-written story. Some of the best Western movies ever made were made on a shoestring budget. An entire subset of the genre - Spaghetti Westerns - was known for being extraordinarily cheap. Not all Westerns, however, have managed to keep costs down, and two of them got so expensive they were basically destined to flop.
Westerns are no strangers to failure at the box office, particularly after Westerns became unpopular after the 1970s. There's a long list of great Westerns that bombed at the box office, and a lot of Western flops have been a product of the genre's constantly changing popularity. The...

Glen Powell is aptly one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood today. While his debut came way back in Spy Kids in 2003, the 35-year-old has seen multiple successful roles come his way in the last few years. Now looking forward to the release of Twisters, Powell has appeared in movies such as Anyone But You and Top Gun: Maverick, and generally finds himself in high demand.
However, that did not seem true to the actor when during his years of struggle. Powell went to his fair share of failed auditions but has never been the kind of person who would take things negatively. The actor has been utterly professional right from the start, and spent years getting rejected for a plethora of major roles.

Comic Book creator Rob Liefeld is returning to Youngblood with Image Comics. The plan is to create new Youngblood media and merchandise, kicking off with a brand-new title written and illustrated by Liefeld, set to launch from Image Comics next year.
Liefeld will reteam with Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, who first launched Image Comics in April 1992.
Rosenberg is CEO of Platinum Studios Inc., which manages Youngblood for the property’s owner, Rip Media Inc.
Youngblood followed Liefeld’s break-out success at Marvel, where he created and established Deadpool, Cable, and X-Force as top-selling characters. Youngblood became the first independent non-Marvel, non-dc Comic title to chart at #1 and sell over 1M copies. The original Youngblood miniseries sold over 25M copies worldwide, and its publication history spans over 100 issues with featured contributions throughout its run from comic talents such as Robert Kirkman Alan Moore, and Mark Millar.
Says Liefeld, “It’s so great that I can run into the comfort of characters that I created, that launched a movement. They carry such history. I love Youngblood so much. These characters are my absolute passion.”
Rosenberg adds, “Rob and I are a fantastic team, and I’m as excited now for Youngblood’s relaunch as I was in 1992 for its initial launch. The team’s awesome characters have not only been in their own Youngblood comics, but also appeared in more than 100 million comic publications worldwide, including crossovers with Marvel and other Image comics. I’m excited to bring them to audiences old and new with their original creator, Rob Liefeld.”
“As our company’s very first comic, Youngblood set the course not just for Image Comics, but for creator-owned comics, so we couldn’t be more thrilled that Rob is returning to his signature creation,” said Image Comics Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Eric Stephenson. “Rob’s vision for these characters and this concept is what originally attracted me to Image Comics way back in the 1990s, so it’s especially exciting that the series that started it all is finally coming home!”
Liefeld and Rosenberg promise more details in the weeks ahead, but initial plans include a Youngblood Vault Edition representing high resolution scans of the original art from the first Youngblood series in a deluxe oversized hardcover, as well as a Facsimile Edition of Youngblood #1 to mark the title’s 33rd anniversary in April 2025, both to be published by Image Comics.

Despite the popularity of the genre of Western, not all its movies have succeeded, but one, in particular, stands out for being one of the most expensive Westerns ever and a huge critical and commercial failure. The Western genre is home to many classics, both in film and TV. On the big screen, the Western genre began in the 1890s with short single-reel silents, with the earliest known Western narrative movie being Kidnapping by Indians, in 1899. Since then, the Western genre has evolved a lot, even mixing with other genres, and it continues to be quite popular.
The Western genre has seen various classics, such as The Great Train Robbery, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, True Grit, and Dances with Wolves. However, like any other genre, the branch of Western has also been witness to some big failures, either due to their stories, performances, behind-the-scenes issues, or other controversies.

Harrison Ford turned down the role of Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, which ended up going to Sam Neill. The ensemble cast of Jurassic Park allowed the film's concept and dinosaurs to shine without being dominated by major blockbuster stars. Ford rejecting the role of Alan Grant allowed the Jurassic Park series to grow into a $6 billion franchise without being reliant on his continued presence.
If Harrison Ford had not turned down a major movie role, cinema may have been changed forever. The iconic actor has appeared in more than four dozen big screen roles over the course of his career. Harrison Ford shines as a villain in What Lies Beneath, showing his potential beyond heroic roles. Despite What Lies Beneath's mixed reviews, Ford's performance as the antagonist was chilling and memorable. Ford has not played a former villain since What Lies Beneath in 2000.
Over the course of his acting career, Harrison Ford has starred in numerous critically acclaimed movies and played many beloved characters, but there is one thing that has been sadly missing from his catalog. Ford's breakthrough in Hollywood came when he starred as Bob Falfa in George Lucas' American Graffiti. Although the 1973 comedy-drama certainly isn't what Ford is most known for, it helped build his relationship with Lucas. Consequently, American Grafitti was a key factor in Ford securing the role of Han Solo in Star Wars in 1977, which was when the actor truly rose to prominence.

Ford's action movies are iconic, filled with compelling stories, excellent villains, and heart-pumping action. The Devil's Own is a solid thriller, while Cowboys & Aliens offers a charming blend of Western and sci-fi elements. With stellar performances, Clear and Present Danger and The Fugitive stand out as searing thrillers with intense action.
Harrison Ford is a very special kind of Hollywood actor with incredible longevity. While he has been acting since the mid-1960s, it was his breakthrough role as Han Solo in Star Wars (1977) that launched Ford to international stardom. Since this point, Ford has had a spectacular career in the industry, finding particular success in his numerous starring roles in action movies. In February 2025, Ford will star in yet another action movie, as President Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross in the McU's Captain America: Brave New World.
Fords action movies are some of the best and most iconic Hollywood has ever produced.

In 1997, Platinum Studios co-founder and chairman Scott Mitchell Rosenberg came up with a unique genre-mash concept. What if classic Western tropes were infused with a gritty alien invasion storyline?
This idea birthed the graphic novel "Cowboys & Aliens," where gunslingers Zeke Jackson and Verity Jones witness the crash-landing of an alien spaceship during a caravan ambush. The aliens that disembark the ship are not the friendly, benevolent type -- this is a race bent on invading and conquering Earth by destroying everything they set their sights on. Now, it is up to the cowboys to work together with the local natives to defeat the aliens at all costs, even if it means adapting to their superior, futuristic weapons to nudge the odds in their favor.
Although the one-sheet for Rosenberg's graphic novel was always geared toward a big-budget film adaptation, it wasn't until 2011 that the Jon Favreau-helmed "Cowboys & Aliens" was released,...

Being an actor means losing out on many, many roles, especially when you are just starting out. Glen Powell knows this agonizing truth all too well. The actor was initially known for his role in Scream Queens (2015-2016), where he played Chad Radwell. However, he gained worldwide fame and recognition only after playing Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick (2022). He then went on to star in his own rom-com, Anyone but You (2023) opposite the gorgeous Sydney Sweeney.

Glen Powell said that he missed out on the role of Han Solo in "Solo: A Star Wars Story" due to a poor final audition. Powell could have used his trademark charisma and experience from similarly morally ambiguous roles to be a great Han Solo. Although Powell could have been a fitting Han Solo, Alden Ehrenreich gave a great performance in "Solo."
Glen Powell recently revealed that he tried out for the part of Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, but that he "blew" the audition. Powell has starred in several high-profile movies recently, such as Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, but his career hasn't only been successes. Glen Powell may be blowing up thanks to roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, but like any other actor, he struggled on his way to the top and lost out on some major roles, including Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
While chatting with GQ UK, Glen Powell spoke of coming “agonizingly” close to playing Han Solo, only to drop the ball at the last moment. “I can joke about it now,” he said, “[but] I blew that final audition.” The role ultimately went to Alden Ehrenreich, but with Powell’s charisma, you can see why Disney was interested in him in the first place. The actor also said he screwed up auditions for Captain America and Cowboys & Aliens over the years, but he’s accepted that it just wasn’t meant to be.

Despite having a presence in literature for over a century, the sci-fi western has remained a grossly overlooked genre. In recent years, except for the underrated Cowboys & Aliens, no other major venture has tried to take the risk of experimenting with the genre, which highlights its uniqueness of amalgamating the Wild West with the complexities of science fiction. Amazon Studios’ Outer Range, created by Brian Watkins, is a meticulously crafted thriller that highlights the genre’s untapped potential through a heady mix of murder mystery, family/social drama, and temporal shenanigans. The first season released a couple of years ago consisted of eight episodes, which had a lot to unpack, which is why, as the second season of Outer Range premieres this week, we would like to briefly discuss every key point viewers need to remember to get into the series with ease.

How do we live in a time where the Academy still hasn’t recognised Hollywood’s stunt community with an Oscar category? When films such as John Wick: Chapter 4 or Mad Max: Fury Road have pushed the boundaries of stunt excellence, it seems mystifying. Thankfully, David Leitch’s romcom/action blockbuster The Fall Guy — based on the 1980s TV series starring Lee Majors — is an apt reminder for its necessary inclusion. And it makes the case while having a lot of fun along the way.
Leitch, a former stunt performer, presents this as a movie-lover’s dream. It follows in the same self-referential footsteps as Bowfinger, Tropic Thunder and Babylon, a behind-the-scenes depiction of a Hollywood poking fun at itself. Almost every scene comes brilliantly infused with a tongue-in-cheek, meta in-joke about the filmmaking process. But you still feel a sense of warmth and affection in every frame. Each...

Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" films are an embarrassment of riches. With a strong ensemble cast, gorgeous visuals, an arresting story, and production design to die for, the filmmaker's take on Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi saga is firing on all cylinders. The movies also have fantastic effects makeup; a talented team is responsible for turning Austin Butler into a scowling, pale villain, etching runes onto the faces of the Bene Gesserit, and making everyone generally look both hot and windswept.
Oscar-nominated makeup artist Donald Mowat is credited as head of the makeup department on both 2021's "Dune" and "Dune: Part Two," but in 2020, he told Inside The Film Room that he nearly didn't get to work on the movies after all. Mowat previously collaborated extensively with Daniel Craig, doing his makeup on films like "Cowboys & Aliens" and "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" before joining the Bond franchise for "Skyfall" and Spectre.

A disaster from 2010, Noah Ringer’s The Last Airbender was a disappointing live adaptation of the much-adored source material, Avatar: The Last Airbender. The animated show was aired for the first time in 2005 and it instantly became a fan favorite, as fans adored the show for three seasons. While the film had a plethora of things wrong with it, one of the most visibly wrong things present in the film was the casting.

Some Westerns are objectively not the best movies, but so charming that they become genuinely entertaining watches. For example, Cowboys & Aliens blends science fiction and Western action, but lacks critical acclaim and a sequel. Bad Girls provides a unique perspective with an all-female Western cast, despite predictable plot points.
Although there are plenty of movies in the Western genre that aren't as great as others, they've still gone on to develop a strong following because of how charming and accessible they are to audiences. While some Westerns boast impressive visuals, there are others that are notable for the lackluster performances of their cast, weak direction, and writing that relies far too heavily on tired Western tropes. Nevertheless, some Westerns have developed a respectable reputation among audiences precisely for their negative traits.

Cowboys & Aliens missed the mark by taking itself too seriously instead of embracing the fun concept. Underwater was a disappointing survival thriller with rushed character development and predictable scares. In Time fumbled the execution of a compelling sci-fi premise, lacking depth in its social commentary.
While innovative and intriguing premises often fuel sci-fi movies, there are instances where the concept alone falls short of making the movie truly great. Science fiction as a genre frequently yields uniquely creative ideas and visions. When compelling sci-fi concepts are executed well into exceptional films, it makes for profoundly satisfying entertainment. However, the opposite also occurs with high-concept sci-fi premises squandered on lackluster final products that never fulfill their promise. This dichotomy speaks to the imprint of execution on even the most fertile creative groundwork. A brilliant idea alone cannot compensate for mediocre follow-through.

Warning: Major spoilers for Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 1 below!
Paul Dano's role in Mr. & Mrs. Smith uses his past villainous roles to make him the biggest suspect, but he's not a villain at all. Experimental Westerns often struggle with controversial endings that can undermine the initial theme or narrative coherence. Films like "El Topo" and "Heaven's Gate" take risks with their endings, resulting in disconcerting twists or unsatisfying conclusions. "Cowboys and Aliens" and "Paint Your Wagon" suffer from confusing or unexpected endings that detract from the overall story and themes.
Western films are one of the most beloved genres in American cinema, so naturally, there have been many iterations of the movies' tropes and plenty of endings that don't live up to the giants of the field. Great Westerns are known for their action, landscapes, and nuanced portrayals of the rugged individualism that has come to define the American West. Though not always, Westerns frequently include cowboys, saloon brawls, and shootouts as central tenants of their stories.

Cowboys & Aliens combines thrilling action and sci-fi adventure with comedic moments, making for an entertaining ride. Cowboys & Aliens was filmed in multiple locations to capture the spirit of both Western movies and science-fiction adventures. Albuquerque, New Mexico was chosen as the main setting for its desert landscapes that accurately reflected the world of the movie. Randsberg, California and Los Angeles were also used for certain shots, utilizing soundstages.
Cowboys & Aliens was released in 2011, and the movie was shot over a few different locations. Due to the film being a hybrid of the sci-fi and Western genres, locations for the movie needed to reflect the legacy of the latter. However, the science-fiction elements of Cowboys & Aliens couldn't be ignored, and certain sequences just wouldn't have been possible had the production not moved around. The medal is awarded annually “to an alumnus of either the AFI Conservatory or the [AFI Directing Workshop for Women] who best embodies the qualities of the late director: talent, taste, dedication and commitment to quality filmmaking.” Schaffner, who died in 1989, won a best director Oscar for Patton in 1970. Recipients of the Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal include David Lynch, Edward Zwick, Amy Heckerling, Terrence Malick, Darren Aronofsky, Patty Jenkins, Paul Schrader, Janusz Kamiński, Caleb Deschanel, Lesli Linka Glatter, Rachel Morrison, Melina Matsoukas, Siân Heder and others.

The World's End (2013): While not the most popular in the Cornetto Trilogy, it has a perfectly timed reveal of its alien antagonists and punchy action sequences. Signs (2002): Although the ending is a let-down, the richly drawn characters and excellent portrayal of the invasion make it a great addition to the genre. Cowboys & Aliens (2011): It may require a few leaps of faith, but the well-constructed Western with added UFOs creates a convincing narrative.
Sci-fi as a genre is very difficult to perfect, but some terrific movies have come close, only to be held back by one or two flaws. Sci-fi deals with big ideas on an epic scale, and it's not easy to come up with a concept that connects with an audience. Even if a sci-fi movie does find an intriguing premise, translating this into a compelling narrative can be a tough challenge. Sci-fi relies on tropes like any other genre,...

Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" and Louis Leterrier's "The Incredible Hulk" (both 2008) in many important ways weren't yet part of the then-nascent Marvel Cinematic Universe when they were first made. Favreau put in a post-credits stinger with Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury more as a wink to fans than as an announcement that larger film projects were afoot. Additionally, Downey's cameo in "Incredible" was treated equally casually, with the actors reportedly improvising their dialogue. It would only be until after Disney purchased the Marvel library in 2009 that plans for an MCU would be put into place in earnest. In many ways, then, it would be Favreau's "Iron Man 2" in 2010 that launched the MCU properly and put plans for an "Avengers" feature film into motion.
Of course, constructing a Marvel Cinematic Universe from the ground up required a new kind of filmmaking. Individual features now had to be...

Some movies just don't seem to age, and "Blade Runner" is one of them. Aside from the fact that the film is one of the most influential sci-fi flicks in cinema history, thanks to the efforts of director Ridley Scott and his production designer Lawrence G. Paull, the 1982 classic remains one of the most stunningly realized films ever made. The immersive world of Scott's dystopian sci-fi gave the impression, as Christopher Nolan once put it, of a "whole world outside the frame of the scene." That's made even more impressive when you consider the production team had a limited VFX budget and constructed most of the sets and visual effects practically.
In other words, "Blade Runner" doesn't look a tad dated even more than 40 years after its debut. Alas, the same can't be said for the cast. The sad truth is that, despite Joe Russo celebrating the inevitable rise of...

There's a reason why "Yellowstone" feels as authentic as it does. For all the backstabbing, fistfights, and unchecked greed on display that make the show seem so outlandish at times, the countless scenes showing everyday life on a fully functioning Montana cattle ranch are meticulously researched and crafted. There is some true cowboying on display and all of the actors have had to endure an outdoor boot camp before the start of each season. There are even a few real-life cowboys featured throughout the series, including actor and "Yellowstone" creator Taylor Sheridan who plays the recurring role of rodeo rider and horse trader Travis Wheatley. Actor Forrie J. Smith, who plays the handlebar mustache-sporting old-timer Lloyd Pierce, also grew up competing in rodeos before trying his hand at stunt work and horse wrangling for the movies.

Modern Westerns have reinvented the genre by doing away with harmful stereotypes and incorporating other genres like sci-fi and comedy. Movies like Cowboys & Aliens and Rango have combined the Old West with elements like aliens and anthropomorphic animals, adding a unique twist to the genre. Films like No Country for Old Men and Django Unchained have modernized the Western genre by incorporating crime and revenge storylines, creating compelling and gritty narratives.
Westerns have been around for over a century, yet many movies over the last few decades have reinvented the genre. The Great Train Robbery, released in 1903, is considered the start of the Western film genre. Since then, hundreds of different Westerns have graced the screen and many, like Unforgiven, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and Cimarron, have won major awards.

Harrison Ford once teamed up with James Bond star Daniel Craig for this 2011 sci-fi adventure. And although the movie was a return to form for the Indiana Jones actor, he initially was frustrated with reading the script.

Cowboys & Aliens was a Western directed by Iron Man filmmaker Jon Favreau. The title of the movie was exactly what it sounded, pitting cowboys and aliens against each other in old times. Favreau had been meaning to make a Western for some time after his 1996 hit Swingers. Adding aliens to the classic sub-genre helped Favreau expand it even more.
“The aliens give [Cowboys & Aliens] an opportunity to open it up and make it something that’s a little bit original, a little different, but we never wanted to give up that ground that was the Western tradition,...
