Turkey has ordered the arrest of one of its top pop singers for allegedly insulting the country’s Islamic high schools system, which was attended by president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Singer, songwriter and dancer Gulsen, 46, who is viewed by many as the Turkish Madonna, became the subject of an arrest order by an Istanbul court on Thursday 25 August, after a video clip of a comment she made about a band or crew member during a performance in April went viral on social media.
She was reportedly remanded to custody pending further investigation on a charge of "inciting people to hatred and hostility”, for saying of the band member: “He attended the Imam Hatip schools. That’s where the perversion comes from.”
Erdogan attended a religiously oriented Imam Hatip school, as did many of his associates and pillars of the country’s powerful business elite.

In December, Elliot Page announced to the world that they’re transgender and non-binary, which was met with overwhelming support by fans and celebrities alike. Ian McKellen, however, who previously worked with Page on X-Men: The Last Stand, has now admitted disappointment in himself for not realizing they were struggling with their identity at the time.
When speaking to LGBT-oriented culture magazine Attitude 101, McKellen recounted an interaction he had with Page during the filming of the superhero misfire that he now wishes he had navigated differently, saying:
“I remember Elliot Page, in one of the X-Men, sat as close as we are now. And I had to speak when they’d finished, and I couldn’t hear what they were saying. Nobody could hear what they were saying. So, I said, ‘Look, if you can’t speak up, would you mind when you’re finished speaking, just dropping your hand...

Although Twilight was thought to be over and done with for years, the recent release of Midnight Sun has put the saga back in the public consciousness. And while there are now few performers anyone could associate with the movies other than Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, they were far from author Stephanie Meyer’s first picks for the central roles of Bella and Edward.
The pair of actors Meyer saw bringing the young lovers to life were actually Henry Cavill and Emily Browning. Although it might be hard to imagine given that both are now into their thirties, bear in mind that this would have been back in 2007. At that time, instead of being known for dark and brooding lead roles in Man of Steel and The Witcher, Cavill was mostly recognized for pouty and brooding supporting parts in I Capture the Castle and The Count of Monte Cristo,...

What if Kevin James was cast as a neo-Nazi? That’s one of the many uninspired questions that Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s gruesome “Becky” answers in a movie driven by an increasingly boring set of narrative dares. Others include: What if the protagonist was a teenage girl so angry she could actually kill? What if there was a MacGuffin that was literally a key that didn’t open anything? Even as the movie The pair’s earlier film, “Cooties,” suffered from similar issues, attempting to build a thin idea (what if a zombie pandemic only turned little kids into monsters?) but at least it yielded more entertaining results.
“Becky” is as grim and gruesome as any horror movie in recent memory, but that alone can’t save this gross-out thriller. Still, the story opens with promise, through candy-colored title cards and fast cuts between Becky (the wonderful Lulu Wilson...

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

It seems like it’s the ’80s all over again what with Madonna sitting pretty atop the “Billboard” album chart with her ninth No. 1 album, “Madame X.” The Material Girl earned enough sales to keep a ’70s chart-topper from claiming the peak position — the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen, whose new release “Western Stars” is his 20th top 10 album after landing at No. 2.
The last and only time this superstar pair topped the album charts together was in 1985, when Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” and “Like a Virgin” held the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively, before they flipped positions later on.
Madonna’s June 14 release has collected the equal of 95,00 album units in the U.S. About 90,000 came from album sales, most of which went to those who bought tickets for her upcoming fall tour. Springsteen’s LP gathered 66,000 equivalent album units, with 62,000 being album sales.

The film is based on a novel of the same name by Sara Gran, and the story follows a “young architect who may be the victim of demonic possession or simply may be losing her mind.” It sounds like it will make for an interesting horror movie and here are some additional details thanks to the book description:

Amanda—a successful architect in a happy marriage—finds her life going off kilter by degrees. She starts smoking again, and one night for no reason, without even the knowledge that she's doing it, she burns her husband with a cigarette. The Umbrella Academy features a handful of very colorful villains. Here is how they differ from their comic counterparts.
The following contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy Season 1 on Netflix and The Umbrella Academy comic series.
The Umbrella Academy was always going to lose some stuff in translation from comic book to Netflix's servers. Luther's giant blue Martian gorilla body probably wasn't going to make it. But one thing that seemed for sure is the villain or villains of the piece would remain the same.
That ultimately wasn't the case as The Umbrella Academy did some re-imaginings and some moving around of the comic’s villains to better suit the TV show's needs. In the process, one villain remained almost exactly the same, one villain changed completely, and two other villains were bumped up from their scheduled appearance in what would have been The Umbrella Academy Season...

David Slade (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch) will direct the pilot and also serve as an executive producer on Barkskins, National Geographic’s upcoming scripted drama series based on the 2016 bestselling novel of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx, which traces the story of America’s deforestation. The announcement was made Sunday at TCA.
The 10-episode series hails from Elwood Reid, Fox 21 Television Studios and Scott Rudin Productions. Slade with work with showrunner Reid to set a visual template for the series.
Reid created Barkskins and will executive produce along with Slade, Rudin, Eli Bush and Garrett Basch. The series is slated to go into production in 2019 and will premiere on National Geographic globally in 172 countries.
Called “a towering work of environmental fiction” and “a spectacular survey of America’s forests dramatized by a cast of well-hewn characters” by the Washington Post, Proulx’s Barkskins spans over 300 years.

Taking aim at everyone from Trump to Tinseltown, Ellen Page has become one of Hollywood’s most outspoken gay actors. She tells Eva Wiseman how she found her voice
Ellen Page was standing in a car park in Brazil as a masked man explained why he murders gay people. It was 2015, and she was filming Gaycation, the documentary series she made with her best friend Ian Daniel after coming out on Valentine’s Day a year earlier. “I’m here today because I am gay and because maybe I can make a difference,” she’d said in a speech at a Human Rights Campaign conference that has since been shared many millions of times. “I suffered for years because I was scared to be out… And I’m standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain.”

How many critics groups are left? We honestly lose track!
Today we're looking at two more. First is the Austin Film Critics Association who were the only group brave enough in 2006 to step away from Helen Mirren's inexplicable steamroll for The Queen in a Best Actress year that was insane with great options (their iconoclastic choice that year: Ellen Page in Hard Candy). This year though they haven't strayed very far from consensus except that they gave Roma only one prize (!).
The Alliance of Women Film Journalists also announced their prizes which are an exact carbon copy, down the line, of critical consensus leaders, so it's a good thing they have several unusual categories, too. Here are the results...

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is the very first interactive movie for adults from Netflix and is directed by David Slade. As a part of the popular Netflix original series Black Mirror, this interactive movie lets viewers choose the path the main character takes during his mind-bending trip into madness. Starring Fionn Whitehead, Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry, Bandersnatch is a groundbreaking and daring work, that fits perfectly into the Black Mirror universe. But is the interactive journey just a gimmick, or does it add a little something special to the experience?

Relax, the frumious Bandersnatch is just a glitch in the system in Netflix's Black Mirror: Bandersnatch trailer.

Black Mirror fans now have more clarity on upcoming Netflix film, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. The streamer has dropped a trailer for the movie that releases tomorrow, December 28, with a synopsis that reads, “In 1984, a young programmer begins to question reality as he adapts a sprawling fantasy novel into a video game and soon faces a mind-mangling challenge. Welcome back.”
Charlie Brooker’s praised dark anthology series was renewed for a fifth season back in March, although Bandersnatch is not thought to be a part of that order with Season 5 still to come at a later date. The trailer calls it “A Black Mirror Event” and features Dunkirk’s Fionn Whitehead with Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry. The latter says, “We’re going to be a hit factory, like Motown, but for computer games.” Poulter’s character then tells Whitehead’s, “When it’s a concept piece, a bit of madness is what you need,...

“Black Mirror” Season 5 might not be debuting on Netflix before the end of 2018, but it’s become increasingly clear that “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” probably will, and it’s most likely happening on December 28. What is “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch”? A Netflix social media leak at the beginning of December suggested it could be the first episode of Seasn 5, but a new report from The Independent (via Esquire) reveals it’s a “Black Mirror” movie, which would be the first of its kind.
While Netflix will not confirm “Bandersnatch,” Esquire made note that an online Netflix page already exists for the title and labels it a “Netflix film.” Any Netflix subscriber can search for “Bandersnatch” on the streaming platform and be directed to this landing page, which confirms it’s not an episode but a film (see photo below). For Nightmare Cinema, five Masters of Horror have assembled to immerse fans in five tales of terror, all told within the confines of a haunted movie theatre inhabited by The Projectionist (Mickey Rourke), a mysterious entity who oversees the facility, showing those who dare enter its doors their deepest fears and darkest secrets. Nightmare Cinema directors include Mick Garris, Joe Dante, David Slade, Alejandro Brugués, and Ryûhei Kitamura, and it features performances from the likes of Richard Chamberlain, Elizabeth Reaser, Belinda Balaski, Patrick Wilson, and Annabeth Gish, to name a few.
The wraparound segment in Nightmare Cinema is called “The Projectionist,” and it acts as the glue that brings all these different stories and cinematic visions together through the Rialto Theatre. Released at festivals in 2017 as The Third Wave, David Freyne's first narrative feature (now released as The Cured) nabbed not just Ellen Page, who loved the script enough to sign on as both actor and producer, but terrific Irish actors Sam Keeley (In the Heart of the Sea) and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Peaky Blinders), as well. The film also sports a cool score, excellent cinematographry, and an interesting take on the tired zombie genre. You would think that all of the above would make The Cured a smash hit, but then you'd be wrong (or just have a differing opinion). There are so many elements of the film that alone, are great, but together, they simply don't gel, which is confusing. Is it...

The Cured, from director David Freyne, had its World Premiere last year. Now, this infectious styled thriller is set to release in the U.S., through IFC Films. The film takes place after a pandemic has swept the land. Some of the infected have been partially cured. Then, they are re-integrated into society, with deadly results. The Cured stars Ellen Page (Hard Candy, 2005), Sam Keeley (Anthropoid, 2016) and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor. A preview of the film's upcoming launch is hosted here. The trailer for The Cured is quite revealing. Senan is still a host to a strange infection. But, his violent tendencies have been thwarted. He is sent out into the community, to live with his sister-in-law. Here, he must face the results of his previous murderous actions. Then, as seen in the trailer, all hell breaks loose - across the city. IFC Films has set February 23rd as the release date.

Slade Signs As Eclipse Director
The cast of the Twilight franchise are in for a scary ride when filming starts on the vampire series' third outing Eclipse - horror moviemaker David Slade has been signed to the project.
Speculation over the director of the third bloodsucking movie has been rife over recent months, with Drew Barrymore and Juan Antonia Bayona both being linked to the coveted position.
Catherine Hardwicke broke records with her take on Twilight, while Chris Weitz is currently in charge of the forthcoming sequel New Moon.
But bosses at film studio Summit and author of the books from which the films are adapted, Stephenie Meyer, have given the green light for the third picture, Eclipse, to take a more sinister twist - by hiring scare master Slade.
The director is famous for his dark films, including Hard Candy in 2005, and has already worked with the vampire genre - directing 2007's critically acclaimed 30 Days Of Night.
And Meyer is adamant Slade is the right guy for the job: "I am thrilled that David Slade will be directing Eclipse. He's a visionary filmmaker who has so much to offer this franchise.
"From the beginning, we've been blessed with wonderful directorial talent for the Twilight Saga, and I'm so happy that Eclipse will be carrying on with that tradition."...

Focus gains Momentum for 'Hamlet 2'
BERLIN -- British entertainment shingle Momentum Pictures has acquired all U.K. rights to the hot Sundance title Hamlet 2, in one of the first big deals of the festival.
The agreement was completed with Universal-based Focus Features, which acquired worldwide rights to the film in January in Park City for a reported $10 million. Focus is selling the picture here in Berlin.
The high school satire centers on American drama teacher Dana Marszh (Steve Coogan), a guy who spends his time name-dropping about time spent on the Mrs. Doubtfire set in a desperate attempt to impress his students. Meanwhile, his marriage to wife, Brie (Catharine Keener), is crumbling away.
The film was directed by Andrew Fleming (Nancy Drew) and co-written by Fleming and Pam Brady, whose credits include South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut and Hot Rod. Momentum also has acquired Hard Candy helmer David Slade's Unthinkable from Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, which also concluded sales on the title to Russia's Top Films.
Unthinkable centers on the interrogation of a man who knows the location of three nuclear weapons set to detonate in the U.S.

Lions Gate pays pretty penny for 'Candy'
PARK CITY -- Angry teen revenge flick Hard Candy was sold late Monday night during the Sundance Film Festival in a $4 million deal that has a big potential upside for the indie filmmakers. Distributor Lions Gate Films purchased North American and worldwide rights, with the exception of the United Kingdom, Australia and Spain, for $2.25 million against 20% of the gross. The other three territories are being negotiated separately, with the United Kingdom likely to go to Red Bus, Aurum Films buying Spain and Mel Gibson's Icon Prods. purchasing Australian rights. Lions Gate won the bidding war against New Line Cinema. Focus Features dropped out of the deal before bidding got too hot. "What differentiates Lions Gate's offer is the gross corridor," said Rena Ronson, an agent with William Morris Independents who negotiated the deal along with her partner Cassian Elwes, Doug Stone and Rosanne Korenberg of Traction Media. "This is a very attractive deal for the filmmakers and the financiers."...
