The Hills Have Eyes 2. No, not that one. That’s The Hills Have Eyes Part 2 and has one of the greatest things ever filmed where a dog, an actual dog, has a flashback and its just, muah, chef’s kiss. While I actually think that original 1985 sequel is way too much fun for its own good – it was written and directed by Craven, brings back Michael Berryman, has Harry Manfredini give us the score, and oh yeah, has a dog flashback. A Dog, Flashback – I’m not here to talk about that one that is probably so bad it’s good. I’m here to discuss the true black sheep of this inbred mountain family and give you all a look at the movie that is not a remake of the sequel but rather a sequel to the remake. The Hills Have Eyes 2 (watch it Here) is a...

The delights of genre cinema are born from human imagination. The stories are nurtured by individuals who optimistically hope and believe across the years of their lives that a single film will devour that their tales arrive at the intended destination – to discover and touch the sensibilities of the audience.
If films are born out of the imagination then so the same could be said for the festivals that showcase them – festivals such as FrightFest that are crafted according to an ethos shared by four men who genre cinema continues to owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude – “‘Run by fans for the fans”, to find those great new voices in genre and see what difference they can make, and to ensure the FrightFest spirit of community endures.
But those who champion and showcase films, supporting their endeavours to find an audience on their ongoing journey from the intimate confines of its maker’s world,...

Dark Skies looks like it will be an interesting blend of scary movie genres, mixing elements of both ghost stories and alien invasion stories. The official synopsis: "As husband and wife Daniel and Lacey Barret witness an escalating series of disturbing events involving their family, their safe and peaceful home quickly unravels. When it becomes clear that the Barret family is being targeted by an unimaginably terrifying and deadly force, Daniel and Lacey take matters in their own hands to solve the mystery of what is after their family."
Keri Russell (Grimm Love, Mission: Impossible III) and Josh Hamilton (J. Edgar) star in a film written and directed by Scott Stewart (Priest, Legion). Dark Skies lands in theaters February 22nd.

The low-budget horror team behind the likes of Paranormal Activity are showing no signs of slowing down as they keep finding other concepts to plumb. Producer Jason Bloom has already hired director Scott Stewart to handle new supernatural tale Dark Skies based on his own script and the duo just tracked down their first cast member, with Keri Russell signing on.Plot details are being kept mostly under wraps, though apparently it involves an alien sneakily disguised as a human and a boy tagged as a target for abduction. Could Russell play his mother?Stewart, who kicked off his career as a digital effects artist and producer, will have to work to restore his credibility a little after the double disappointments of Legion and Priest. Perhaps his latest stab at horror will provide just that opportunity.Russell is better known for the likes of Felicity on TV and Mission: Impossible III...

Hidden within an article a few weeks ago it was revealed that Legion and Priest director Scott Charles Stewart would be getting behind the camera for Dimension Films' Dark Skies, some sort of sci-fi horror that was being kept secret. That's never good enough for us here on Bloody Disgusting, which is why I put in a few calls and started digging. Being produced by Blumhouse and Alliance Films, we've exclusively learned that the horror flick focuses on a 6-year-old boy who's apparently been "marked" by an alien (living among us) for future abduction. It looks like it taps into some of the same themes of Fright Night, while also playing into child abuse (did the parents cause these marks on the child's body?) Keri Russell (Mission: Impossible III, Grimm Love) and Daniel Barrett are both in talks, Bd also discovered. They would play the young boys parents, who...

After a couple of light on horror weeks, we are finally treated to a bumper crop of new releases. Headlining the week is Frozen, which is just what we in Southern California need to stave off our current heat wave. A couple of oldies but goodies are out, too, as Madman celebrates its Happy 30th Birthday and the original King Kong comes to Blu-ray. Fangoria's eight FrightFest titles bow as well.
Frozen
Directed by Adam Green
In Frozen (review), Adam Green has crafted a potent combination of absolute terror and compelling human drama that will stick with you long after you've left the theatre or turned off the DVD. One thing's for sure: The next time your friends invite you on a ski weekend, odds are you'll try to convince them to head to the beach instead. Frozen stars Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell and Kevin Zegers.
Buy the Blu-ray or the regular DVD.

Edgar Allan Poe. His name isn’t just synonymous with horror; he’s one of the prized few who have given it artistic validity. And if you want to adapt any of his work, you damn well better do it right, or fear the wrath of his rabid fan base—always a tough crowd. Stepping up to the plate is The Tomb, a modern reimagining of Poe’s short story “Ligeia” and one of the films in the Fangoria FrightFest lineup (along with Pig Hunt, Fragile, Road Kill, Dark House, The Haunting, Grimm Love and Hunger), which are currently available exclusively through Blockbuster stores and Blockbuster By Mail, as well as digitally via Blockbuster On Demand.

Are they dropping the "part" from the title or are they simply calling it Hostel 3 ? While Sony determines that, the casting continues. Nip/Tuck 's John Hensley, Skyler Stone, Chris Coy and Thomas Kretschmann are the latest additions to the cast. The latter can now be seen in Grimm Love which just hit DVD. In the Scott Spiegel-directed follow-up, a bachelor party goes awry in Vegas. Sony's Stage 6 is producing.

Grimm Love Movie Still (Meiwes)Director: Martin Weisz.
Writers: T. S. Faull.
Grimm Love is a film which is being distributed by Lightning Entertainment on DVD next month. The film covers the murder case involving the real life characters Armin Meiwes and Bernd Jurgen Brandes. Meiwes ate the later in an instance of cannibalism. This subject matter has spawned the films The Man Who Ate His Lover and Cannibal. Non-fiction, very disturbing, and truly horrifying, Grimm Love is a homo-erotic love story involving grotesque acts of butchery.
This film was completed in 2006 and then released in Germany as Rohtenburg. There are numerous sources which cover this story in more depth, but centrally the film involves two very lonely and very twisted human beings. Both are homosexuals. One character (Brandes) is involved in a romantic relationship and the other (Meiwes) is slowly coming to terms with his homosexuality after the death of this overly protective mother.

Screamfest, Rachel Belofsky’s venerated Los Angeles horror film festival (now in its tenth year, running October 9th thru the 17th at Highland and Hollywood in Hollywood, CA), has historically been on the cutting edge of horror, having in the past introduced to the American public such disturbing and blogged-about features as The Human Centipede, Martyrs and Inside, just to name a few.

Possibly the grisliest entry in the eight-film Fangoria FrightFest lineup (available through Blockbuster stores and Blockbuster By Mail, as well as digitally via Blockbuster On Demand, beginning August 6) is the cannibal shocker Grimm Love. This twisted romance is based on the real-life case of cannibal Armin Meiwes, who gained worldwide notoriety when he ate Jurgen Brandes, a man who responded to an on-line ad Meiwes placed seeking someone who would allow themselves to be consumed.

She is doing her thesis on the murder of Simon Grombeck, who died at the hands of Oliver Hartwin, a man whom Grombeck met online in a cannibal chatroom. Synopsis:
Set and filmed on Britain’s Isle of Wight, the award-winning Fragile takes place in a children’s hospital that has been the scene of a railroad accident and is due to shut down after nearly a century of service. Calista Flockhart stars as Amy, an American nurse who is sent over from London to help out and discovers that the eight kids who still reside there believe something invisible — and menacing — is haunting the premises. Richard Roxburgh and Spanish actress Elena Anaya, both previously seen in Van Helsing, co-star.

- Remember when the U.S. Copyright Group launched thousands of law suits against people who had downloaded their clients' films? And no one really cared since the infringed titles included films like Uwe Boll's Far Cry? Well, now that Voltage Pictures has enlisted the group to sue thousands of people who downloaded The Hurt Locker, I have a feeling a few more people are going to be a little on edge by the time this sentence sinks in.

Both directors hail from Spain, a treasure trove of great horror films the last decade.
A similar deal was announced recently between After Dark Films, Lionsgate, and Syfy under the 'After Dark Originals' moniker (read 'Adf Ties Not With Lionsgate & Syfy'). Unfortunately,...

I'm really pulling for Fangoria Magazine these days. Chalk it up to childhood nostalgia if you want, but some of my earliest genre memories were peeling through the pages of Fango and being absolutely mesmerized by what I saw. Their new magazine layout is certainly a step in the right direction, and that's not all Fango has up its sleeve.

We have a real treat in store for today's One-Page Screenplay: Ts Faull is the screenwriter of Grimm Love -- an award-winning film based on the events of Germany's hugely notorious consensual cannibalism case, starring Thomas Kretschmann and Felicity herself, Keri Russell. The film was banned in Germany for three years after a judge ruled it infringed upon its real-life cannibal inspiration Armin Meiwes's rights, making Faull something of an indie film outlaw in those parts.
For us, Faull has birthed a minimalist masterpiece that pushes the hybrid subgenre of childbirth and body horror to disturbing new extremes. Ladies and gentlemen: Throat Babies.

Cologne, Germany -- A film loosely based on the life of infamous German cannibal Armin Meiwes has been cleared for release in Germany after a four-year legal battle.
Martin Weisz's "Rohtenburg" (Grimm Love), starring Keri Russell and Thomas Kretschmann, was a strong festival player, winning multiple awards at fantasy fests in Spain, Sweden, Luxembourg and South Korea. But German courts initially blocked its local release after Meiwes filed a suit claiming the film violated his rights.
The German Federal Court of Justice overturned that ruling Tuesday, saying that, in this case, artistic freedom trumps Meiwes' personal rights. It is expected that Senator Film, which co-produced "Rothenburg" with Marco Weber's Atlantic Streamline, will release the film in Germany.
Meiwes is serving a life sentence for killing and eating a man who answered a cannibalistic lonely hearts ad Meiwes put online.

The ban on the film based on the life of German cannibal Armin Meiwes has been lifted after a court ruled public interest outweighs complaints over the film.
Meiwes was convicted of murder in 2006 and is currently serving a life sentence for eating a willing victim.
"Rohtenburg" was released internationally in 2006 as "Grimm Love," starring Keri Russell as an American criminal psychology student in Germany who chooses the life of a notorious cannibal named Oliver Hartwin as the subject of her thesis.
The screenings of the film was banned in Germany in 2006 after a court ruled that it violated Meiwes' personal rights. However, a court in Karlsruhe said that public interest outweighs the complaint that it would cause him emotional damage. The court said that the producers' right to artistic freedom and Meiwes' own previous efforts at marketing his crime outweighed his personal rights, BBC reports.

Cannibal Film Ban Overturned

A ban on a gruesome German horror movie which chronicles a real-life cannibal act has been reversed in a Berlin court.
Convicted flesh eater Armin Meiwes sued to prevent the release of Martin Weisz's 2006 film Rohtenburg, claiming the movie violated his rights.
Meiwes was sentenced to life behind bars in 2006 after he confessed to killing and eating Bernd-Juergen Brandes, who asked the so-called Cannibal of Rothenburg to "obliterate" his life.
Weisz's film stars Keri Russell as an American student researching the infamous cannibal case.

Having just concluded their first annual Deep Red International Festival of Fantastic Film in Portland, Or, organizers Shade Rupe and Chris Bavota are now gearing up to repeat the chilling experience in Seattle. The event will take place Friday-Saturday, May 8-9 at the Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 Ne 50th Street).
“We had a great time in Portland!” Rupe tells Fango. “Plague Town’S David Gregory and Black Devil Doll’s Jonathan Lewis both showed up, and we met a bunch of Portland’s die-hard horror fans. The Alamo Drafthouse guys were in town for the two days before us, so it was almost like a four-day festival. It was a really cool time. People loved the films and the opportunity to see them.”
The Seattle edition of the Festival will welcome a couple of unique attractions not present in Portland. “T.S. Faull, the screenwriter of Grimm Love [directed by Martin Weisz] and a new film for Dimension,...

DVD Tuesday April 28th, 2009 Battle in Seattle, 2008 Loosely based on the Wto (World Trade Organization) Ministerial Conference of 1999, Battle in Seattle creates a multiple protagonist perspective during the five days of protest within the streets of Seattle. While making his directorial debut, Stuart Townsend (actor turned director) apparently had a lot to say about the events surrounding the Wto conference, as he not only directed this film, but also wrote and produced it. For a first time director, Townsend ultimately did a good job, as the films execution worked on multiple aspects in production: from writing to directing. In fact, I believe it is the writing of Battle in Seattle that truly captures the sentiment of the film. While the Wto protest actually took place in November of 1999, Townsend’s capability to create semi fictional, yet realistic characters around a true event brings extra vulnerability to audiences, as everyone is...

The Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival kicks off tomorrow with a screening of Ella Lemhagen’s Swedish comedy Patrik, Age 1.5, in which a gay couple discover that their newly adopted "baby" is actually a 15-year-old anti-gay juvenile delinquent. Among the other films scheduled at the festival, which runs until May 3, are: Yair Hochner’s quirky romantic comedy Antarctica (above, top photo), in which several gay men and a couple of lesbians try to sort out their entangled romantic lives in bustling Tel Aviv — all that while awaiting for aliens to land in the city. Valdis Óskarsdóttir’s Icelandic comedy Country Wedding (above, lower photo), about several individuals with various personal secrets who gather for an out-of-town wedding. Jacqui Morris‘ British romantic comedy Mr. Right, which follows three London gay couples and their emotional ups and downs.
