It's been five years since "Game of Thrones" ended, and the behemoth series still seems to be the touchstone HBO is obsessed with returning to. It makes sense that a network with a hit as big as the George R.R. Martin-inspired fantasy epic under its belt would want to replicate that series' success. "Game of Thrones" raked in more viewers than the prestige cable network had ever seen before, broke a Guinness World Record by airing in 173 countries simultaneously, and won a whopping 59 Emmys. Even with a marked quality drop in its later seasons, "Thrones" was still undoubtedly the biggest phenomenon on TV.
So why have the shows HBO has made since then, including the ones that have matched "Thrones" in ratings, failed to tap into the pop cultural zeitgeist in the same all-encompassing way? There are several factors worth considering here, from an oversaturated streaming market to a...

Like any streaming service worth its salt, Max updates its selection on a regular basis. On occasion, this provides it with platform-exclusive smash hits. Other times, however, Max introduces an older title that manages to resonate with the streaming-era audiences and rise to a hit status. This has happened to films that range from famous horror crossover movies like "Freddy vs. Jason" to the classic comedy "Christmas Vacation" (which showcases one of Johnny Galecki's earliest roles) -- and now, per FlixPatrol, a truly surprising fantasy title has cracked Max's Top 10 list.

The upcoming TV series It: Welcome to Derry, which will serve as a prequel to Warner Bros’ two-part adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel It (pick up a copy Here), was originally meant to be for the Max streaming service, but we recently learned that it will be airing on HBO as well. The show went into production in Port Hope, Ontario at the end of last year, aiming for a 2025 premiere, and wrapped in August after 237 shooting days. Bill Skarsgard came back to reprise the role of Pennywise, the evil clown – and during an interview with SFX magazine, Skarsgard discussed what it was like to play Pennywise again, hyping up the show a bit without revealing anything.

Jeffrey Wright began his distinguished career as a member of John Houseman‘s renowned Acting Company, touring the country performing Shakespeare and honing his craft. His stage breakthrough came with his co-starring role in the original production of “Angels in America” as the nurse Belize, a performance that won him a Tony Award and later an Emmy when Wright reprised it for the 2003 HBO miniseries adaptation.
That Tony win led to Wright starring in the title role of his first major film, “Basquiat,” directed by Julian Schnabel. His powerful performance led to a long and distinguished career as a character actor in film, where he worked with such acclaimed filmmakers as Wes Anderson, Jim Jarmusch and John Singleton. During that time, Wright balanced his career with TV and stage appearances as well, earning a second Tony nomination for 2002’s “Topdog/Underdog,” and three Emmy nominations for his co-starring role in...

The Last of Us may not return until 2025, but star Jeffrey Wright is opening up about joining the HBO series for its highly-anticipated second season. Wright’s connection to the show extends beyond its TV confines, having originated the role he’ll play as Isaac Dixon in the video game. “My son was a fan of the game and I met Neil Druckmann who’s the creator,” Wright recalls of his initial introduction to the world. Druckman, as Wright points out is also “behind the series.” HBO “He asked me if I wanted to be a part of the game,” Wright continues. “One of the writers from Westworld is a writer for the game and also for the series, Halley [Wegryn Gross],” the actor reveals. “And so, I asked my son, ‘What do you know about this thing, The Last of Us?’ And he was like, ‘What?!'” Wright says animatedly with a laugh.

Marilyn Manson is dropping a lawsuit against Evan Rachel Wood accusing her of manufacturing a conspiracy to portray him as a serial abuser who has sexually assaulted several women.
As part of the settlement, Manson will pay roughly $327,000 in legal fees to the Westworld star, according to court documents filed earlier this month.
At the center of the dispute were allegations that Wood and her friend Illma Gore lied to prospective accusers to encourage them to come forward with sexual assault allegations against the musician, namely by saying that he filmed the assault of a minor in a 1996 short film he made called Groupie.
Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, sued the pair in 2021 ahead of the premiere of HBO documentary Phoenix Rising, which explores sexual assault allegations against the musician and Wood’s efforts to pass legislation that extends the statute of limitations for domestic violence cases in California.

Marilyn Manson, whose legal name is Brian Warner, has settled his lawsuit against Evan Rachel Wood, in which the musician had alleged defamation a year after Wood came forward with sexual abuse allegations against him. As part of the agreement reached on Nov. 19, Manson will pay roughly $327,000 in attorneys’ fees for the “Westworld” star, according to legal documents obtained by Variety.
“Marilyn Manson — whose real name is Brian Warner — filed a lawsuit against Ms. Wood as a publicity stunt to try to undermine the credibility of his many accusers and revive his faltering career. But his attempt to silence and intimidate Ms. Wood failed,” Michael J. Kump, an attorney for Wood, wrote in a statement to press. “As the trial court correctly found, Warner’s claims were meritless. Warner’s decision to finally abandon his lawsuit and pay Ms. Wood her full fee award of almost $327,000 only confirms as much.

If you haven’t watched Interior Chinatown‘s 10 episodes on Hulu yet, you’re missing out on one of the year’s weirdest, wildest rides. Willis is also unknowingly (at first) a background character in cop procedural Black & White (a spoof on Law & Order and the like). With dreams of being a kung fu hero, Willis works his way from a background character into a lead, all while solving a years-in-the-making Chinatown-centric case under the guidance of glamorous transfer Detective Lana Lee. And it’s all seemingly connected to his long-missing older brother (played by Chris Pang). The story gets even weirder ...

It makes sense that Charles Yu’s acclaimed 2020 novel “Interior Chinatown” would eventually be adapted into a TV series. After all, its title is taken from a screenplay’s slugline, and the entire novel is written in a screenplay format. Further, Yu’s writing on “Westworld,” “Lodge 49,” and “Legion” suggests a writer interested in heady concepts and maximalist execution.

Charles Yu, the author of “Interior Chinatown” and showrunner of its Hulu TV adaptation, admitted he didn’t think his 2020 novel could be adapted to screen when he was first approached with the idea.
“Honestly, I did not really think that it would be adaptable, which is probably something I shouldn’t admit,” Yu told TheWrap. “But [Hulu] was interested … they approached me and acquired the rights of the book and I started to work on the script … It was really a big challenge, because I knew … what works well in the book won’t necessarily work in a TV show — It’s a completely different medium.”
As Yu adapted the novel — which centers on Chinatown restaurant worker Willis Wu (Jimmy O. Yang) who is stuck in the background of police procedural series — into a TV series, “Interior Chinatown” became even more meta. Yu, who has TV writing credits for a...

The Penguin‘s visionary lead director, Craig Zobel, has signed a new multi-year, first-look deal at HBO.
The Emmy nominee helmed the first three episodes of the Gothic crime drama, helping establish the visual language of the series, as well as serving as an executive producer.
The Penguin started strong out of the gate with an acclaimed pilot and gradually became one of the network’s biggest hits in years, with its series premiere having racked up a cumulative 18 million U.S. viewers.
Zobel previously told The Hollywood Reporter that he kicked off his relationship with the show by writing Reeves a fan letter about The Batman. “I happened to have his email,” he said. “So I reached out to say, ‘Hey, not for nothing, [The Batman] was the superhero movie I wanted to see right now. You killed it.’ That was my first time saying anything to Matt at all.

Willis Wu (Jimmy O. Yang) wants to be more than the background character in someone else’s story. Working as a waiter at his uncle’s Chinatown restaurant, the Golden Palace, he spends his days throwing out trash bags and dreaming of being a protagonist. Unfortunately for him, he’s a mere bit-player in the world of “Black & White”, a rote police procedural about two cops who always save the day. Things start to change, however, when he witnesses what seems to be a kidnapping by a local crime gang. Now, alongside Detective Lana Lee (Chloe Bennet), the only cop who seems to care about this side of town, Willis is ready to be a hero. Or, at the very least, a supporting player with a few good lines.

In 1953, Billy Wilder scored a critical and commercial success with his film adaptation of Donald Bevan and Edmund Trzcinski's stage play "Stalag 17" (one of his 14 best films according to /Film). Set in a World War II Pow camp behind Nazi enemy lines, the movie is a rambunctious account of how imprisoned soldiers misbehave and attempt to make their captors' lives miserable. They're also ever on the verge of hatching a new escape plan, though they wind up having a rat in their ranks who complicates their efforts.
Given that World War II was a desperately bloody affair on both the European and Pacific fronts as the Allies fought to save civilization from the clutches of genocidal vermin, you might not think it appropriate for artists to find humor anywhere within the conflict. But the ability to laugh when...

Here at JoBlo Horror Originals we talk a lot about gateway horror films. Depending on the generation you belong to, that can be a few different things. Kids of the 70s will always have Jaws as an introduction to horror and that movie is still a great way to introduce newer generations to the genre after almost 50 years. Two of my favorites from the 80’s, and two films that both my sons have seen, are The Gate and The Monster Squad. Again, both great and both still hold up as not only fun horror flicks but great ways to ease in the younger crowd. As a kid born in 1985, I am much more a child of the 90s so even if you hadn’t read the title of the video you clicked, you could probably guess that I saw Jurassic Park in theaters, it scared and enthralled me and made me want more.

In Hulu‘s Interior Chinatown, we meet Willis Wu (played expertly by Silicon Valley’s Jimmy O. Yang). And Willis… he’s stuck. A waiter at the Golden Palace and a background character in police procedural Black & White, Willis tends to his elderly parents and practices kung fu between shifts, while dreaming of being a hero like the TV cops he idolizes, cool Miles Turner and smart Sarah Green (Jury Duty‘s Lisa Gilroy). He gets his chance after witnessing an abduction and helping glamorous detective Lana Lee investigate a Chinatown mystery that might also relate to Willis’ long-missing older brother. Suddenly, he’s a lead on Black & White and his life is turned upside down. “It’s like the world’s strangest cop show that at its heart is a [show about family],” says series creator Charles Yu (Westworld), who ...

Microsoft’s Xbox division was under no pressure to turn its video game franchise “Fallout” into a TV series. That’s one of the main reasons why the adaptation that premiered earlier this year on Amazon Prime Video has worked well for viewers and for dedicated fans of the game.
Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, and Jonah Nolan, executive producer and showrunner of the “Fallout” TV series, gave the backstory of how the TV series came to be during a discussion this week held as part of the Paley Center for Media’s International Council Summit in New York. Spencer and Nolan discussed the growing convergence of gaming IP with TV, film and other forms of media.

Dune is one of the most celebrated franchises in all of science fiction, and director Denis Villeneuve breathed new life into it with a pair of big-screen blockbusters: 2021’s Dune and this year’s Dune: Part Two. Now HBO is trying to bring the epic grandeur of those movies to the small screen with a new spinoff, Dune: Prophecy, debuting this Sunday at 9/8c. (I’ve seen the first four episodes.) It certainly looks and feels like Dune — minus the big, spectacular set pieces — and it’s buoyed by a pair of sturdy lead performances. But the end result doesn...

Exclusive: Warner Bros TV this week filed to dismiss a lawsuit by Michael Crichton’s estate that alleged the studio cut the late ER creator out of a new series by changing the venue to an inner-city hospital in Pittsburgh called The Pitt. The new show has the same EP in John Wells, showrunner R. Scott Gemmill and star Noah Wyle who were part of the ER talks, with the Crichton estate left out. Some will always disagree, but fantasy TV has undeniably gone south. That’s not saying much since fantasy has never been a strong genre, with a few notable exceptions.
Everyone is trying to replicate the success and appeal of Game of Thrones, and no one is asking themselves: What made Game of Thrones so good to begin with?
Even the world’s on-and-off-again richest man, Jeff Bezos, expressed a desire for an Amazon series that can replicate Game of Thrones’ success.
(HBO)
Instead, we got Wheel of Time and The Rings of Power. The former is mediocre in terms of entertainment and viewership (though improving incrementally), and the latter is simply a disgrace to modern television.
Netflix gave us the promising Witcher series but took a steaming dump on it partway through season 2. Westworld collapsed, and His Dark Materials is merely watchable and soon drawing to a permanent close.

This upcoming Sunday, HBO will air the first episode of Dune: Prophecy, a new TV series set in Frank Herbert's Dune universe. But don't expect to see Paul Atreides anywhere; this show is set 10,000 years before the events of the first Dune book, adapted recently by director Denis Villeneuve for the big screen. Dune: Prophecy takes place in the shadow of the Machine Wars, where humanity fought against violent thinking machines and just barely won. Now, various schools are cropping up to teach human beings to do things that computers used to do. One of those schools is the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, where women are trained to be human lie detectors. Sisters are then placed in the halls of power alongside the leaders of the great houses. Are they serving truth, or are they subtly massaging events in the Sisterhoods' favor?

Clint Eastwood's breakout role was, of course, the Man with No Name in Sergio Leone's 1964 Western classic "A Fistful of Dollars." At the time the movie was released, 17-year-old bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger who had just started a competitive career in his native Austria, far from both Hollywood and Spain's Tabernas Desert where Leone's seminal Western was shot. But the movie, and specifically Eastwood's movie star magnetism, made a big impression on the young Schwarzenegger, who throughout the illustrious career that followed his early bodybuilding days has praised the Hollywood veteran as one of his idols. The "Terminator" star even modeled his post-Governator acting career on Eastwood, telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2011:

Written and directed by Michael Crichton, the sci-fi thriller Runaway had its thunder stolen by another killer robot movie in 1984: The Terminator.
It’s a wonder what author and filmmaker Michael Crichton must have thought when Orion Pictures released its moderately low-budget sci-fi thriller The Terminator in cinemas in October 1984. Not just because of its parallels between Crichton’s 1973 film Westworld – right down to Yul Brynner’s implacable, gun-toting robot cowboy, which Arnold Schwarzenegger later admitted had influenced his performance. Rather, because young upstart filmmaker James Cameron completely stole Crichton’s thunder.
Less than two months later, in December 1984, Crichton’s own killer robot movie emerged in cinemas. Called Runaway, it cost a little more to make than The Terminator (Cameron’s debut cost about $6.4m; Crichton’s film cost $8m). But unlike the former, Runaway was a box office disappointment. The Terminator made almost $80m in cinemas alone,...
