It was announced at the start of the year that Robert Eggers will be following up Nosferatu with Werwulf for Focus Features, which has already been dated for release in 2026.
Set in the 13th century and being described as a medieval horror movie, Robert Eggers’ Werwulf will howl its way into theaters from Focus Features on Christmas Day 2026.
On stage at a recent event, Eggers promised – or warned, perhaps – that Werwulf is shaping up to be the darkest horror movie he’s ever made – and that’s saying something!
Eggers teases, “It’s a medieval werewolf movie. And it’s also the darkest thing I’ve ever written. By far.”
The filmmaker co-wrote the screenplay for Werwulf alongside Sjón, the Icelandic poet and novelist who previously co-wrote the Viking movie The Northman with Eggers. Sjón has also been announced as the co-writer for a new Labyrinth movie being directed by Eggers.

Is there anyone as disappointed in their adaptations as master of horror Clive Barker? Okay, part time Wizard and full-time curmudgeon Alan Moore is probably the most upset at his work being adapted but Clive is a close second. The sad part is that while he has had fewer of his novels or short stories adapted than someone like Stephen King, he has played a part in more of them and been let down more often than not. He also didn’t have a great beginning with film as his first screenplay Transmutations or Underworld he ended up hating. He first adapted his own work with Rawhead Rex in 1986 and hated the end product there too. Other than 1987’s Hellraiser which he wrote and directed, there hasn’t been something that he was disappointed in or was butchered by the studio and he has become a bit jaded. His films...

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a chilling horror film that delivers a uniquely atmospheric take on the classic Dracula mythos. Directed by André Øvredal, the movie adapts a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula—the doomed voyage of the Demeter, a Russian schooner transporting a mysterious cargo from Carpathia to England. This narrative decision to focus on a small portion of the novel allows the film to dive deep into the slow-building dread and claustrophobia of being trapped at sea with an unspeakable horror.
The film begins with the Demeter’s crew discovering that they have been tasked with transporting a set of crates, each filled with soil from Transylvania. They are unaware that...

Over the last 15 years, director André Øvredal has brought us the likes of Troll Hunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Mortal, and The Last Voyage of the Demeter. He missed out on the Stephen King / Richard Bachman adaptation The Long Walk and has said that not making that movie is one of the big regrets of his life… but he’s not letting that missed opportunity slow him down. Deadline reports that Øvredal is teaming up with Paramount and Walter Hamada’s 18hz on a new horror project – and while we don’t know the title yet, we do know that the the film’s cast includes Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys: Ride or Die), and Lou Llobell (Foundation)!

If it’s Christmas, it must be… Robert Eggers? Fresh off directing Nosferatu for Focus Features, released on Christmas Day, THR reports that Eggers is re-teaming with Focus on Werwulf, a 13th century werewolf horror movie that Eggers co-wrote and will be directing.
Focus Features has already dated Werwulf for theatrical release on Christmas Day 2026.
The Hollywood Reporter details, “Eggers wrote Werwulf with Sjón, who co-wrote heady Viking saga The Northman with the filmmaker. While details are scarce, sources say the story is set in 13th century England. The script also features dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English.”
“Initially, Eggers was planning on shooting the feature in black and white, but that is no longer the case,” THR’s exclusive report also notes. “Suffice to say that considering the setting and the dialect, Eggers is promising another deep dive into a muddy,...

It’s no secret that Universal has been having a tough time bringing their classic Universal Monsters back to the big screen for a new generation in recent years, with films including Renfield, The Last Voyage of the Demeter and Abigail failing to turn a profit at the box office. The sole success story of the bunch was Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man, a bold take on the classic monster tale that scared up $144 million on a Blumhouse budget of just $7 million.
Whannell is back at the box office with Wolf Man for Blumhouse and Universal, another fresh take on a legendary monster from the Universal catalogue. The new movie’s production budget is a reported $25 million, quite a bit higher than the cost of The Invisible Man back in 2020. That means it’ll have to make more to become profitable, and it’s not off to a great start so far.

Since his directorial debut over two decades ago, André Øvredal has steadily built an impressive filmography, mostly working within the horror genre. After his first feature film, Future Murder, in 2000, the Norwegian filmmaker built a name for himself over a decade later, eventually directing popular films like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and The Last Voyage of the Demeter, with the latter hoping to find a place among the best Dracula movies of all time.
Despite working his way up to Hollywood productions, Øvredal is not yet a household name, but the signs of him becoming one are there, especially with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 in the works. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is by far his most famous film, earning over $104 million worldwide when it was released in 2019 (via Box Office Mojo), and the sequel has the potential to earn even more.

Stories mutate over time, adapting to both storytellers and their audience in often unpredictable ways. This is precisely why folks will still flock to creature features about monsters they’ve seen a million times before, as it’s always fun to find out how filmmakers have managed to update the source material. And when it comes to classic monsters that have gone through cinematic makeovers, it’s hard to compete with the good-old vampire.
From foreign sex symbols to zombie-like hordes and even mindless bat-monsters, vampires have proven to be an oddly versatile creature for filmmakers of every disposition. And in honor of Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu remake revamping one of the most iconic depictions of blood-sucking ghouls in cinema history, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest vampire designs in horror!

In the wake of the 1928 animated short Steamboat Willie entering the public domain, horror movie Screamboat is headed our way to twist the tale into a horror movie nightmare, with David Howard Thornton (Terrifier franchise’s Art the Clown) playing the killer Steamboat Willie.
Iconic Events Releasing is bringing Screamboat to the big screen in April 2025, and Variety shares the very first image of David Howard Thornton as Steamboat Willie today (above).
“I’m so excited to share our mischievous monster mouse with the world. Screamboat is my way of paying homage to Disney while putting a sinister, yet comedic twist on the classic,” writer-director Steven Lamorte said in a statement to the outlet. “Watching David Howard Thornton bring Steamboat Willie to life with the magicians at Quantum Creation FX has been nothing short of amazing — he’s hilarious and murderously entertaining. Michael B. Jordan is armed and ready for action in a new image from director Ryan Coogler's Sinners. Jordan leads the Sinners cast in dual-roles as twin brothers Elijah and Elias Smoke, with Hailee Steinfeld and Jack O'Connell also starring. As was teased in the first trailer, the movie follows Elijah and Elias as they return to their hometown, only to find themselves facing off against a terrifying evil. It has been theorized that this evil is vampires, but no such creature has actually been shown in any marketing materials, keeping the threat shrouded in mystery.
A new 2025 movie preview from USA Today includes a new image from Sinners, and several clues in the image reinforce the idea that Jordan will be facing off against vampires. The image features Jordan holding a sharpened wooden stick and a pistol while covered in blood, and wooden stakes are, according to folklore,...

With Christmas firmly in the rearview mirror, 2024 is nearly in the books. But this year's holiday frame was particularly good for the box office, as both "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" and "Mufasa: The Lion King" continued their big runs atop the charts. More importantly, several new releases also found their footing to help close out the year on a high note, with director Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu," in particular, having a stellar opening. The long-awaited new take on the vampire classic absolutely blew by expectations, delivering a big win for horror as the new year approaches.
"Nosferatu" pulled in $21.1 million over the weekend, but since the movie hit theaters on Wednesday to get in on the Christmas action, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Eggers' latest pulled in a whopping $40.3 million across the full holiday stretch, which was good enough for third on the charts. Even against a sizable $50 million budget,...

Nosferatu director Robert Eggers addresses Count Orlok drinking blood from the chest and not from the neck in his new horror movie. After The Northman (2022), Eggers returns to horror with his upcoming adaptation of the 1922 German film of the same name. Bill Skarsgård leads the Nosferatu cast as the villainous Orlok, a vampire who becomes transfixed with a local, haunted young woman, and the movie features some key differences from more traditional vampire stories, including how the monster drains blood from his victims.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Eggers explains why Count Orlok drinks blood from his victims' chests in Nosferatu, explaining that it was all about leaning more into a folkloric take on a vampire. According to the director, the old folk tales he drew from describe victims feeling vampire attacks in their chests rather than their necks. Check out Eggers' explanation below:

In 2024, we have no need to try and make vampires happen. They have already happened for at least a century, and they're very much still happening: stories about vampires have saturated just about every medium there is. Weirdly, though, we may have to work a little harder to make the vampire happen again — as in the most legendary bloodsucker of all: Dracula.
In fairness, it may not be Dracula himself whose popularity is waning, but rather movies about him. Ever since his screen debut in the lost film "Dracula's Death" in 1921, barely a decade has gone by without some iteration of the Count turning up in cinemas, which is partially why the character has undergone so many various iterations. Like all fictional creations who've been built to last, Dracula endures by embracing change. Yet there can always been too much of a good thing; the last several films to prominently...

Robert Eggers bought himself instant star status in the horror world with his feature debut "The Witch" in 2016. Now, after taking a detour into the realm of big-budget, historical epic action with "The Northman," the acclaimed director is back with a new horror movie in the form of "Nosferatu," Eggers' long-awaited fresh take on F.W. Murnau's 1922 vampire classic. The question is, can this gothic vampire tale take a big enough bite out of the Christmas box office?
Focus Features' "Nosferatu" is currently eyeing an opening weekend between $12 and $16 million, per Box Office Theory. But that's only part of the equation here. The film is hitting theaters on Christmas Day, which falls on a Wednesday this year. Much like "Moana 2" did over its record-breaking five-day run over Thanksgiving, Eggers' latest will have a long holiday weekend to make its money. So, if we assume the film performs similarly well on Wednesday and Thursday,...

Maika Monroe (Longlegs) and director Chloe Okuno (V/H/S/94: Storm Drain, Watcher) will reteam for the upcoming horror movie Brides, and Longlegs distributor Neon has officially announced this morning that they’ve boarded the project. It’s “coming soon.”
Neon has picked up North American rights to the upcoming Brides of Dracula-inspired vampire film. Deadline notes in an exclusive report, “Neon will release the film theatrically.”
Here’s the synopsis: “Set in 1960s Italy, Sally Bishop (Maika Monroe) and her husband travel to a remote villa in the wake of Sally’s nervous breakdown. The villa’s owner, a mysterious count, takes a peculiar interest in Sally. But he gets far more than he anticipated when Sally’s feminist chaos is added to his perfect, violent Eden of vampire brides.”

In 1922, German film director F. W. Murnau premiered his silent expressionist vampire film, Nosferatu, based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic horror novel, Dracula. Since then, several iterations have come and gone with varying degrees of faithfulness to the source material. An announcement 93 years later would see Robert Eggers writing and directing another remake. Yet, with several scheduling conflicts and unforeseen challenges, the film would not begin production for another eight years. Be that as it may, Eggers’ long-awaited adaptation is here. Nosferatu is a stunning gothic horror remake that puts terror back into vampire lore.

The runtime for Robert Eggers' 2024 Nosferatu remake is revealed, and it sets a record for the horror franchise. Eggers established himself as a premiere horror director with his acclaimed film The Witch (2016). He later veered into dark fantasy with The Lighthouse (2019), while maintaining his sure hand at portraying psychological disintegration. After venturing into epic historical fiction with The Northman (2022), Eggers is back in the horror game with his upcoming Nosferatu remake, starring Bill Skarsgrd as an otherworldly bloodsucker.
With the film set to unleash its gothic horror goodies on Christmas Day, the runtime for Eggers take on Nosferatu has now been revealed (via Fandango), and at 2 hours and 12 minutes, its longer than either previous Nosferatu movie by a considerable margin.
What This Means For Eggers Nosferatu Murnau Needed Less Than 90 Minutes
F.W. Murnau crafted the original Nosferatu, a loose adaptation of Bram Stokers Dracula, with the monster renamed for legal reasons.

Filming has wrapped on a horror thriller called The Cure, and Deadline reports that the film stars Ashley Greene of the Twilight franchise and genre regular David Dastmalchian, who was recently seen in the likes of Late Night with the Devil, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Afraid, and The Boogeyman. Newcomer Samantha Cochran also has a lead role.
Nancy Leopardi, who previously directed Nanny Cam and Lethal Seduction, was at the helm of this one, working from a screenplay by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, the writing duo behind Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane. The story they crafted for The Cure centers on Cochran’s character, Ally Braun, an adopted 16-year-old with a mysterious illness who learns her bio-tech billionaire parents (Dastmalchian and Greene) are harvesting her blood for nefarious purposes.
Sydney Taylor (American Born Chinese), Tyler Lawrence Gray (Wolfpack), and Dylan Flashner (Running on Empty) round out the cast.

In-demand actor David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil) will star in the upcoming sci-fi horror movie The Cure alongside Ashley Greene (Twilight) and newcomer Samantha Cochran, Deadline reports today.
The Cure is directed by Nancy Leopardi and written by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer (Unsane).
The horror movie follows “Cochran’s Ally Braun, an adopted 16-year-old with a mysterious illness who learns her bio-tech billionaire parents (Dastmalchian and Greene) are harvesting her blood for nefarious purposes.”
Leopardi called the film “a satirical take on the modern billionaire class cloaked in a crowd-pleasing thriller,” telling Deadline, “The Cure is made in the tradition of classic horror and sci-fi films that are inspired by terrifying socio-political realities and advances in bio-technology. Like Ex-Machina, A.I., and Videodrome I believe we are on the cusp of a revolution in science and the big question is – who will benefit?”

Earlier this year, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman) went into production, with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Now, cast member Judy Greer (the Halloween and Ant-Man franchises) has said that the film Lawrence has made out of King’s story is beautiful and dark.
An adaptation of The Long Walk has been trudging through development hell for decades. At one point, the rights were in the hands of Frank Darabont, who made the King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist. Then the rights passed over to New Line Cinema, where...

Nosferatu (2024) director Robert Eggers shares new teases about Count Orlok's appearance in the upcoming film, explaining why audiences have never seen anything like it in a Dracula movie before. Loosely based on Bram Stoker's Dracula and serving as an adaptation of the 1922 German film of the same name, Nosferatu's story follows Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp), a haunted young woman, as she finds herself the object of a terrifying vampire's infatuation. Bill Skarsgrd plays Count Orlok, the vampire, in the film, and marketing materials have thus far kept his appearance hidden.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Eggers provides the best idea yet of what Count Orlok will actually look like in Nosferatu, teasing that he approached the vampire in a way that all previous Dracula films did not. The director calls Orlok "more of a folk vampire," meaning that he looks like an actual corpse rather than a more traditional movie vampire.

Horror enthusiasts have something to look forward to as Kate Siegel (Hush) and David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil) will be starring together in the upcoming zombie film Epilogue, which will be produced by one of the kings of horror, Mike Flanagan. Below, we shared all there is to know about this movie so far.
Described as an action-horror flick, Epilogue will be directed by Michael Fimognari. Fimognari is known for directing episodes of the Netflix horror series The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher. He will be helming this movie from a script co-written by Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason.
The story takes place a year after the zombie apocalypse is believed to have ended, and follows a desperate couple searching for a cure for their infected daughter. Although Siegel and Dastmalchian's roles in the film haven't been revealed, our guess is that they'll play the couple.

Mike Flanagan and David Dastmalchian are both prominent figures in the horror world, so it’s somewhat surprising that their first collaboration came not on a horror project, but on Flanagan’s upcoming movie The Life of Chuck – which, despite being a Stephen King adaptation, is a drama. Today, Deadline has announced that Flanagan and Dastmalchian are set to work together again… and this time the project is a horror film. Flanagan will be producing Epilogue, which Dastmalchian will star in alongside Flanagan’s wife and frequent collaborator Kate Siegel. Michael Fimognari, who worked as cinematographer on most of Flanagan’s work and directed episodes of The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher (not to mention the films To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You and To All the Boys: Always and Forever), will be directing, working from a screenplay by Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason.

Mike Flanagan is producing a new zombie movie featuring familiar stars from previous horror projects. The best known Mike Flanagan movies and TV shows are all part of the horror genre, including the Stephen King adaptations Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep. He also created quite a few popular Netflix horror miniseries including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher.
Per Deadline, the upcoming zombie action-horror movie Epilogue has cast Kate Siegel and David Dastmalchian in the lead roles. The movie will be produced by Mike Flanagan and directed by The Fall of the House of Usher's Michael Fimognari from a screenplay by Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason, who previously collaborated as co-stars on the Barnett-penned 2020 comedy Faith Based. Spooky season is here, which means it’s time for movies featuring all manner of ghouls, creeps, and monsters. And there may be no monster more famous than Count Dracula, the blood-sucking vampire introduced in Bram Stoker’s gothic horror novel Dracula. He’s appeared onscreen countless times in various iterations – far too many to list here. But here are a few notable Dracula adaptations to sink your teeth into this Halloween.
‘Nosferatu’ Max Schreck as Count Orlok in ‘Nosferatu’ | Frederic Lewis/Hulton Archive/Getty Images
Vampires have fascinated filmmakers since the early days of cinema. Director F.W. Murnau’s 1922 Nosferatu is an unauthorized adaptation of Dracula. The movie was nearly lost to history when all copies were ordered destroyed after Stoker’s widow sued for copyright infringement. But a print survived, and the movie has gone on to become an influential classic. (The Witch director Robert Eggers’ remake is due out later this year.

2023 had two movies inspired by Bram Stokers Dracula, and between the two, Renfield was the less faithful yet more enjoyable movie to watch. The Last Voyage of the Demeter was the other 2023 Dracula movie, an expansion of one chapter from the source novel, "The Captains Log," into a two-hour creature-feature film. Because it adheres so closely to the book, it does not add anything new to the genre. Conversely, Renfield is a unique blend of comedy and horror that brings a fresh take to the Dracula cinematic universe.
The Renfield cast is led by Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as Robert Montague Renfield, Draculas servant. The movie is a loose sequel to Universals classic monster movie, Dracula, expanding on the relationship established in the original. The movie explores the dynamic between Dracula and Renfield after 90 years together, until Renfield's action-packed ending. But while the characters are familiar, the irreverent tone is completely unexpected.

At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Recently, there have been casting announcements for a movie called Primate, which is being directed by genre regular Johannes Roberts and is part of Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount. Now, Deadline has broken the news that another Hamada horror project that’s moving forward at Paramount has gotten another genre regular, Andre Ovredal, to sign on as director.
Ovredal will be directing this other film from a screenplay written by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess. Donohue previously directed and co-wrote the 2013 found footage horror film The Den and wrote and directed the TV series The Unknowable.

Director André Øvredal has set up his next horror project, with Deadline reporting that Øvredal has signed on to direct an untitled horror movie for Walter Hamada’s 18hz Productions.
Deadline details in this week’s exclusive report, “Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess penned the script for the new project, which has a logline that’s being kept secret.”
Gary Dauberman (Salem’s Lot) will also produce the untitled horror movie.
Via 18hz Productions, Hamada is slated to produce several mid-budget horror films for Paramount Pictures per year. Other projects in the works include Primate and Familiar.
Hamada, who recently left WB/DC, has a ton of horror cred from his time at New Line, producing countless horror movies including the Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street remakes as well as The Conjuring and its various spinoffs and the 2017 adaptation of It.

Hamada also is producing Primate for the studio; that film is in production. Dauberman, whose feature take on Stephen King’s classic novel Salem’s Lot was released last fall on Max, also penned several installments in The Conjuring series including The Nun and Annabelle franchises. His feature directorial debut was Annabelle Comes Home.
Dauberman’s feature take of King’s It grossed $1.1 billion.
Øvredal also directed the movies Mortal and Amblin’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

Dracula-adjacent horror The Last Voyage Of The Demeter is only just getting a cinema screening in the UK, over a year after it screened into in the US. A look at its mysterious absence from our screens:
Update: Two months after we published this feature about The Last Voyage Of The Demeter never making it to UK screens, the film is now available to watch at home! It appears that you can currently only buy the film on digital retailers, but a rent option often appears after a few weeks.
Coincidentally, Salem’s Lot is also being released in cinemas this week, so if you like vampire films, you’re having a great week, I bet.
prepare yourselves: #Dracula is making his way to the UK...
