The tech giant has ordered The Secret Lives of Animals, a ten-part docuseries narrated by Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville.

It is the latest wildlife project for the streamer, which has previously aired series including The Year Earth Changed, Tiny World, Earth at Night in Color, Prehistoric Planet, Big Beasts and Earthsounds.

The Secret Lives of Animals will launch on December 18 and feature never-before-seen footage of rare animal behaviors, highlighting the intelligence of the natural world.

It is Bonneville’s latest nature docuseries; he previously narrated Netflix’s The Hidden Lives of Pets.

It also marks the third collaboration between the BBC Studios Natural History Unit and Apple TV+, following Prehistoric Planet and The Year Earth Changed.

Apple TV Europe boss and BFI chair Jay Hunt engaged in a rare public Q&a hosted by “The Traitors” U.K. presenter Claudia Winkleman during the BFI London Film Festival, where she discussed her lengthy career in U.K. public service broadcasting, move to streaming and the U.K. screen industry at large.

Among the advice Hunt shared with the audience was the importance of acknowledging failure and taking risks. BBC Studios Productions CEO Ralph Lee will exit the BBC’s commercial wing in April. He is leaving after six years to “pursue a new challenge outside the organisation.”

BBC Studios has initiated a search for a replacement, with Lee saying “the right time to explore other opportunities.”

Lee joined BBC Studios as Director of Content in 2018 and was made CEO of BBC Studios Productions in 2022, when the BBC pooled its Scripted, Factual, Global Entertainment and Kids & Family divisions into one single production hub.

BBC Studios Productions CEO Ralph Lee has announced that he will depart the company in April after nearly six years.

According to a press release, Lee is leaving BBC Studios Productions to “pursue a new challenge outside the organization.” The BBC has started its search for Lee’s successor.

Lee was appointed director of content in 2018 and has since led BBC Studios Productions to become the most-awarded production group at both the BAFTAs and Rts Awards. In the 2022-2023 financial year alone, BBC Studios Productions scored 400 nominations and 111 awards.

At BBC Studios, Lee has presided over productions including “Strictly Come Dancing,” “Happy Valley 3,” “EastEnders,” “Doctor Who,” “Prehistoric Planet,” “Good Omens,” “The Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final” “The Coronation of King Charles III” and more.

Lee took on the CEO title in 2022, when the company combined its scripted, factual, global entertainment and kids and family productions as well as talent relationships and content investment.

Two-time Oscar winner Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve (“Prehistoric Planet”) will compose the score for Sky and Peacock series “The Tattooist of Auschwitz.”

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Heather Morris, the limited series is inspired by the true-life story of Lale and Gita Sokolov. It follows Lale (Jonah Hauer-King), who arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942, where he was made one of the tattooists charged to ink identification numbers onto fellow prisoners’ arms. He meets Gita (Anna Próchniak) when tattooing her prisoner number, and they experience love at first sight. Under constant guard from a volatile SS officer Baretzki (Jonas Nay), Lale and Gita became determined to keep each other alive. Some 60 years later, Lale (Harvey Keitel) meets novice writer Heather Morris (Melanie Lynskey). Recently widowed, Lale finds the courage to tell the world his story.

The six-episode series is produced by Synchronicity Films in association with Sky Studios and All3Media International.

The streamer has greenlit a duo of six-part docs titled Born to be Wild and Endangered Planet, Deadline can reveal, both of which carry urgent messages around the need to help save rare species on Earth.

Born to be Wild will follow endangered animals including a Savanna elephant calf, cheetahs and a moon bear cub, as they are brought up by humans with a view to returning to their homelands once they are ready.

Endangered Planet, meanwhile, will use cutting-edge technology to uncover insights into protecting precious species including the Gobi bear, Malayan tiger, Javan rhino, Caucasian leopard, Cross River gorilla and the North Atlantic right whale.

This morning when the Emmy nominations were announced, Zimmer (Dune) was cited for the score of Apple TV+’s Prehistoric Planet and Shore (The Lord of the Rings) collected his first Emmy nom for Amazon’s The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power. They are among those celebrating Creative Arts Emmy nominations.

Nominees who could add an Emmy next to their Academy Awards are Oscar winning sound mixer for Bohemian Rhapsody Paul Massey (Emmy nominated for David Bowie doc Moonage Daydream alongside three-time Oscar nominee David Giammarco); sound supervisors John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone (Oscar winners for Bohemian Rhapsody, who are Emmy nominated for Moonage Daydream); and mixer Skip Lievsay (Oscar winner for Gravity, who is Emmy nominated for Still: A Michael J. Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, prosthetic makeup artist Barrie Gower, and composers Hans Zimmer, Nicholas Britell and Danny Elfman were among the industry heavyweights who landed Creative Arts Emmy nominations on Wednesday morning.

Four-time Oscar winner Atwood landed her second Emmy nomination in the outstanding contemporary costumes for Tim Burton’s “Wednesday.” Speaking about her work on the show and about recreating the icon Morticia Addams’ costumes, Atwood said, “We reinvented look with this silver fabric on the side, which was bonded to the black, twisted and sewn over. The dress had a more contemporary shape to it. I think we honored the previous versions of Morticia that had come before.

Britell, who won an Emmy in 2019 for outstanding original main title theme music for “Succession” landed three nominations. The composer was recognized for his main title music and original dramatic score work on Disney+’s “Andor.” He also landed a nomination for “Succession.

Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday.

Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category.

Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.

Among the seven music categories, a surprising number of first-time nominees was recognized, and more than one-fourth of all the nominees in the five composition and songwriting categories are women, another positive sign of change in the Hollywood musical landscape.

Rihanna could score a touchdown at the 2023 Emmy Awards: The pop star is nominated for her explosive Super Bowl performance, where she debuted her baby bump and broke the internet.

Rihanna’s halftime show earned five Emmy nominations — and she specifically scored a bid for outstanding variety special (live), which she shares with executive producer Jay-Z. The rap mogul is also nominated for outstanding directing for a variety special, which he shares with Hamish Hamilton.

Jay-Z, along with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent, won outstanding variety special (live) last year for the 2022 Super Bowl halftime performance.

Elton John, Selena Gomez, Lizzo, Ed Sheeran, Dolly Parton and Kid Cudi were among the pop stars who also scored Emmy nominations Wednesday.

John will compete with Rihanna and Jay-Z for outstanding variety special (live), and if he wins, the Oscar, Grammy and Tony winner will become an Egot.

Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination.

That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition.

Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.

The annual event continues to recognize excellence in nonfiction, unscripted and reality programming across broadcast, cable and streaming platforms.

Lisa Vanderpump was honored with the Impact Award this year and Eugene Levy won Star of the Year. Additionally, Bravo and Netflix were the biggest winners of awards, topping four categories each.

A special program showcasing the winners will premiere on Ktla+ and Ktla.

Welcome to Wrexham with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney scored the Best Sports Show award and The Amazing Race came in first in the Best Competition Series category at the 2023 Critics Choice Real TV Awards. Critics Choice Association members spread the love around, with only RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi, and Top Chef earning two awards each.

Given the quantity and quality of reality programming, the Cca launched the Critics Choice Real TV Awards in 2019 to recognize the best in nonfiction, unscripted, and reality shows. In addition to the regular competition categories, this year the Cca honored Lisa Vanderpump with the Impact Award and Eugene Levy was named Star of the Year.

The Critics Choice Association revealed the winners of the fifth annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards, which recognize excellence in nonfiction, unscripted and reality programming.

RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, Taste the Nation With Padma Lakshmi and Top Chef tied with two awards each. Drag Race won the award for best ensemble cast in an unscripted series, Taste the Nation won best structured series, and Top Chef won best culinary show. RuPaul and Lakshmi tied in the best show host category, which went to the three aforementioned shows. (The most recent season of Top Chef, which concluded June 8, is Lakshmi’s last after she announced she would not be returning as host ahead of the finale.)

Additionally, Lisa Vanderpump was honored with the Impact Award, while Eugene Levy — who hosts Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy, which won best travel/adventure show — won Star of the Year.

Prehistoric Planet (Apple TV+) Prehistoric Planet

Season one of this David Attenborough-narrated study of dinosaurs was snubbed (its VFX is cutting-edge, but some doc purists object to re-creations). However, voters have a track record of embracing nature/animal-related docs in this category.

“Prehistoric Planet” is back on Apple TV+ with over two dozen new extinct species to explore. Given the amount of dinosaurs and birds, the biggest challenge for supervising sound editor Jonny Crew was “capturing those prehistoric sounds.”

Without a library of extinct sounds to pull from, Crew, who also worked on the first season, says the trickiest task was distinguishing the sounds of different birds. That’s where chickens helped crack an important moment in the show’s first episode, titled “Islands,” in which audiences are exposed to the behavior of the Hatzegopteryx, a stork-like reptile. A key scene focused on two dinosaurs mating.

“Whether you’re in a rainforest or swamp, the birds are going to sound different, but at that time birds hadn’t properly evolved,” Crew tells Variety. The challenge was capturing the sound of “massive, ferocious creatures having this tender moment together.”

Prehistoric Planet season 2 will be released next week on Apple TV+ with new prehistoric creatures, new fascinating behaviors, and more. The dinosaurs in Prehistoric Planet feel more real than ever before, and even more care has gone into filling out the prehistoric world in the show’s second season. The five-night event series premieres May 22nd on Apple TV+, and a new episode will be released each following evening.

The visual world of Prehistoric Planet is immersive and captivating, but it is made even more impactful by the show’s musical score. Prolific film composer Hans Zimmer contributed music to both seasons of the show, as did Andrew James Christie, Kara Talve, and Anže Rozman. Prehistoric Planet season 2 is almost here, with Apple TV+ set to immerse viewers once again in the world of the late Cretaceous period. Returning are some fan-favorite dinosaurs from the unique docuseries’ first season, as is series narrator David Attenborough. The five-episode event series premieres May 22 on Apple TV+, with a new episode to be released every night.

The show follows in the tradition established by hit BBC docuseries like Planet Earth, focusing on different ecosystems with each episode to great and fascinating effect. Two major creative minds behind the series are executive producer Mike Gunton and showrunner Tim Walker, who together have managed to take what worked about the first season of Prehistoric Planet and flesh it out even more for season 2. From new creatures to a wider range of camera techniques, Prehistoric Planet season 2 has managed to improve upon the already fantastic original iteration.

Apple TV+ is opening its own FYC activation pop-up this year, taking over Hollywood’s Goya Studios to launch the “Think Apple TV+ FYC” space from May 1 to May 14.

The streamer’s signature Emmy-winning hit “Ted Lasso” will open the space on May 1 with a fan event that includes a series trivia game, followed by a conversation moderated by Yvette Nicole Brown (“Community”). Cast and creative team participating include series star and executive producer Jason Sudeikis, as well as Brendan Hunt, Brett Goldstein, Juno Temple, Phil Dunster, Jeremy Swift, Kola Bokinni, Cristo Fernández, Billy Harris and James Lance. The trivia game, hosted by comedian Ryan Budds, will feature cast members Charlie Hiscock, Stephen Manas and Moe Jeudy-Lamour.

Studio Soho has debuted a new trailer for Lotfy Nathan’s feature directorial debut ‘Harka.’

A modern-day parable about resistance, the film centres on the story of Ali, a young Tunisian who dreams of a better life, making a precarious living selling contraband gas at the local black market. When his father suddenly dies, he’s forced to take charge of his two younger sisters and their impending eviction. What ensues is a fight for dignity. The voice of a generation still trying to be heard 10 years after the Arab Spring.
