Sitting at a capacious round table filled with half-a-dozen entertainment reporters, Gary Oldman describes himself as a fan of television. “Some of the best stuff you see is on your television screen,” he said. “I love long-form.”
Frankly, this isn’t the first time a movie star who’s new to television has praised the medium printing his paychecks. But Oldman — in a winding, hourlong conversation pegged to “Slow Horses,” his first TV role as a series regular — really does seem to love the visual art of serialized narratives. During the December luncheon (hosted by Apple in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood), he brought up a dozen shows, often unprompted, and even quoted his favorite line from “Succession” off the cuff.
“God, [Brian] Cox had one of the greatest lines when he said, ‘What is that smell in here? It’s like a cheesemonger died and left his cock in the brie,...

It's time to rejoice, cozy drama fans! All Creatures Great and Small, the British series about the staff of Skeldale House and their vibrant life in the Yorkshire Dales in the mid-20th century, will return for at least two more seasons, PBS officially announced in February 2024.

Will Tristan Be Back for Another Season
The third season concluded with a heartbreaking cliffhanger as Tristan (Callum Woodhouse) decided to enlist in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps to prove his worth and contribute to his country's war effort. The Guinness World Records once listed the BBC’s Doctor Who as the “most successful Science Fiction television series in the world,” and, in November 2023, the show turned an impressive 60 years old. Doctor Who originally ran from 1963 to 1989 and was relaunched in 2005.
Despite its grand age, it’s not demonstrating any signs of slowing down.
Former showrunner Russell T Davies (fresh from his success with It’s A Sin) returns to the franchise following last year’s Christmas specials with fan-favorites David Tennant and Catherine Tate. With the 14th season — which, for the first time ever, will premiere simultaneously worldwide thanks to Disney+ (on Friday at 7 p.m.) — Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education and Barbie) officially becomes the newest incarnation of the errant Time Lord.
But, what about those who have already played the role of The Doctor (a.k.a. Doctor Who) over the past seven decades? Below is your 101 to all of the lead actors.

Even though many great period TV shows have come out lately, half of them dip into romance in far too much detail for anyone to want to watch. If you're still traumatized by the infamous Bridgerton ladder scene, or just want to spend family night watching a period piece, check out the list below.
These 10 TV series prove that there is a way to present romance, intrigue, humor, and drama in a way that everyone can enjoy.
North and South (2004)
Although this story is romantic, there is a great emphasis on the historical background. The main character, Margaret Hale, is a southerner who is forced to move with her family to a northern city that has already been taken over by the new wave of industrialism. She must adapt to new customs and watch the world change before her eyes.

Exclusive: All Creatures Great and Small scribe Jamie Crichton is taking on ITV’s latest campaigning drama, a series about the fight to repeal the notorious double jeopardy law starring Sheridan Smith.
Details about the drama first started emerging last night and we can reveal it will be titled I Fought the Law and is produced by Mary & George indie Hera Pictures.
Based on Ann Ming’s book For the Love of Julie, the series tells the heart-breaking story of Ming’s 15-year-long battle for her daughter Julie’s murderer to face justice. Ming’s daughter was found in the bathroom of her house in 1990, 80 days after she had disappeared, and the man who killed her was twice acquitted following mistrials before eventually admitting to the murder. The archaic double jeopardy law meant he couldn’t be tried twice for the same crime and it is this law that Ming and her family successfully overturned.

The titular gentleman of “A Gentleman in Moscow” is Count Alexander Rostov, a Russian aristocrat played with sprightly joie de vivre by an enthusiastic Ewan McGregor. An aesthete with impassioned opinions about wine pairings, Rostov was born to live the life of leisure handed down to him by his landowning ancestors. The problem is that Rostov is a man unfit for his time. Before he can assume management of his family’s country estate, the Russian Revolution rudely intervenes. A populist poem from his student days spares Rostov the firing squad, relegating him instead to a lifetime of house arrest in Moscow’s fictional Metropol hotel.
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Amor Towles, “A Gentleman in Moscow” follows Rostov through the doors of the Metropol and stays there through decades of Russian history, from the formation of the Soviet Union to Stalinist repression to World War II and beyond.

Hotels are strange, contradictory, but often wonderful places. They are permanent structures primarily designed for temporary lodging. They can offer more luxurious furniture and amenities than you get at home, yet you’ll rarely sleep as well as you do in your own bed. Dreams in hotels tend to be weirder and more vivid — there’s a reason so many of Tony Soprano’s more memorable nightmares either occurred while he was at a hotel, or depicted his unconscious self staying in one — and the setting is evocative enough to...

If you’re going to spend your life under political house arrest, you could do worse than the gilded cage of Moscow’s plush Hotel Metropol, even if one’s accustomed suite has now become an attic grotto. Those are the reduced circumstances to which Count Alexander Rostov (a lovably witty Ewan McGregor) adjusts in Showtime‘s poignant adaptation from Ben Vanstone (All Creatures Great and Small) of Amor Towles’ acclaimed novel, A Gentleman in Moscow. Is his spirit diminished? Hardly. “It is the business of times to change and gentlemen to change with them,” Rostov concedes with characteristic dignity in the wake of the Russian Revolution that renders the deposed nobility the enemy of the state. He is warned in no uncertain terms that should he ever step outside the Metropol he will be shot on sight, and his response to being moved to what once were servants’ quarters...

Intimacy coordinators, basically delicate choreographers for sex scenes, are not new to Hollywood productions. But this may be a first.
For the Paramount+ with Showtime limited series “A Gentleman in Moscow,” in which Ewan McGregor plays a Russian aristocrat banished to a bleak hotel room during the early days of the Soviet Union, the actor told Britain’s Radio Times that the production still used an intimacy coordinator for one romantic sequence, even though his scene partner was Mary Elizabeth Winstead, his wife of two years.
“We did have an intimacy coordinator!” McGregor said, when it was suggested he probably didn’t need one. “It’s still necessary, because it’s also about the crew, and it’s odd to be naked in front of people, it’s odd to be intimate in front of the camera. If you were doing a dance scene, you’d have a choreographer. It...

It’s natural that, while you may want to stay on the cutting edge of prestige TV drama and join in all those “How great is Shogun?!” conversations of the moment, there are also times when the world makes you want to shrink down to the size of a Subbuteo player, step into a book illustration from a copy of Thumbelina you owned as a child, and go to sleep underneath a single feather inside a walnut shell.
Those walnut shell moments demand a TV accompaniment that isn’t noisy or confrontational. There should be no difficult thoughts there, just a gentle tide of ‘everything’s okay-ness’ lapping at your brain’s shore. These British TV shows all provide exactly that sense of comfort. Please recommend your own picks below.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona star Rebecca Hall was one of the buzziest names to feature on the BBC’s recent 12-strong drama slate and the BAFTA winner can now be seen in first look images playing a teacher in Element Pictures’ The Listeners.
Adapted by the novel’s author Jordan Tannahill, Hall’s character Claire is tormented by a low humming sound that no one else around her can hear. This seemingly innocuous noise gradually upsets the balance of her life, increasing tension between herself and her husband, Paul, and daughter, Ashley. But despite multiple doctors, no obvious source or medical cause can be found.
Scroll down for more pics, including another of Hall and one of Ollie West (Hamnet), who plays student Kyle and can also hear the sound.
Also starring in the series, which was filmed in Greater Manchester, are Prasanna Puwanarajah, Amr Waked (Ramy), Gayle Rankin, Mia Tharia (Phoenix Rise), Franc Ashman, Samuel Edward Cook, Karen Henthorn, Lucy Sheen (Ping Pong) and Ian Mercer.
Deadline revealed the show’s development last March and Poor Things producer Element is making it with Janicza Bravo – whose past credits include Zola, Mrs America and Them – directing. Hall is also starring in James L. Brooks’ next movie Ella McCay and Tessa Thompson’s similarly-named helpline drama The Listener. Fremantle is distributing The Listeners.
Rebecca Dundon, SVP Scripted Content, International at Fremantle said: “The Listeners is a thriller like no other that will surprise, provoke and challenge the status quo.”

Tannahill and Bravo are EP-ing alongside Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Chelsea Morgan Hoffmann and Rachel Dargavel for Element Pictures, Rebecca Ferguson for the BBC, and Alice Birch. The series is produced by BAFTA-nominated Ed King. Fremantle is handling global sales.

With its feel-good storylines and delightful banter, All Creatures Great and Small remains the TV equivalent of comfort food, but after four seasons, the days of stability in Skeldale House are long gone.
In Season 4, the characters experienced a series of major life transitions, including the birth of James (Nicholas Ralph) and Helen Herriot's (Rachel Shenton) first child and housekeeper Mrs. Hall's (Anna Madeley) divorce, all while navigating the realities of World War II — namely, the absence of Tristan Farnon (Callum Woodhouse), who's serving on the front lines with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, and James' imminent departure for the Royal Air Force. Tensions were high as headstrong veterinary surgeon Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) struggled to control his emotions, but with the help of Mrs. Hall and new vet student Richard Carmody (James Anthony-Rose), he pushed through, and the Skeldale family emerged from the season-ending Christmas special stronger than ever.

For four seasons, All Creatures Great and Small has operated along a familiar timeline. Each installment begins in the spring — just in time for calving season — and follows veterinarians Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) and James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph) as they treat the animals of the Yorkshire Dales throughout the summer and fall. A few weeks later, viewers check in with the residents of Skeldale House at Christmas, at which point housekeeper Mrs. Hall (Anna Madeley) solves some kind of crisis, preserving the merriment for all. Lather, rinse, deliver a few lambs, repeat.

For years, the simmering romance between Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) and Mrs. Hall (Anna Madeley) has been more of a "won't-they" than a "will-they," but that finally stands to change in the wake of the All Creatures Great and Small Season 4 finale, "The Home Front."
Though Siegfried and Mrs. Hall end the season in uncharted territory, their romantic prospects weren't looking good heading into the episode. All signs pointed to Mrs. Hall, now free to remarry after learning her divorce has been finalized, leaving the Yorkshire Dales with Gerald (Will Thorp), her kind, garden-loving boyfriend. They made plans to move to the Lake District, where Gerald's sister has been recovering from an illness, and even got engaged, with Mrs. Hall proclaiming that "this is [their] chance to be together," and if they don't take it, they "might always regret it."...

The residents of Britain’s Yorkshire Dales are feeling the ramifications of World War II as Season 4 of All Creatures Great and Small picks up in 1940. The enchanting PBS series, based on the popular books by James Herriot, begins its new season with rural veterinarian James and his wife Helen a year into their marriage, wondering if the time is right to start a family, aware that any day he could be called to duty. “In some ways, it feels like the exact reason why they should have a child,” says Shenton. “And in some ways, it’s the exact reason why they shouldn’t.” For the actress, this new season is also the chance to show another side to her usually poised character, who moved away from the family farm after her wedding last season to take up residence at Skeldale House, where her husband lives and works. “I...

Callum Woodhouse's Tristan Farnon doesn't appear in All Creatures Great and Small Season 4, but his absence casts a long shadow over the six-episode season (and the accompanying Christmas special). With Tristan gone and Britain losing the war against the Nazis, the residents of Skeldale House struggle to keep their anxiety in check, and both their home and the veterinary practice are thrown into disarray as a result. To get through it, they must lean on one another like never before — and if there's one thing Ben Vanstone's British drama continues to do consistently, it's to remind viewers that there's power in numbers, particularly when coupled with good intentions and a hopeful outlook.
