After the Marvel Cinematic Universe climaxed in 2019 with the release of "Avengers: Endgame" — a film which made eleventy skatillion dollars (adjusted) — many began to wonder if that was it for the series. After a $400 million, three-hour SFX epic with 40 main characters, a time travel story, and a 45-minute climactic fight scene, it seemed doubtful that it could be topped. Even after another decade of buildup, and an additional twenty-some feature films, such a finale couldn't possibly be recreated.
As it so happens, the doubters were correct. In the five years since "Endgame," the MCU has seemed both overstuffed and directionless. Multiple TV shows have oversaturated the brand, making each MCU entry seem less special. News began to come out about how Marvel Studios was engaged in vicious SFX bidding wars that were hurting the industry. Also, many have begun to notice the narrative limitations of superhero stories in general. There's...

Disney is happy with the results of its initiatives to curb account sharing among subscribers so far.
Password-sharing restrictions may not be customer-friendly, but there’s no doubting the effect they can have on a streaming service’s bottom line. They can help convince viewers who have been using — but not paying for — a particular service to bite the bullet and sign up themselves, lest they lose access to their favorite shows and movies. Disney is one of the latest companies to begin enforcing rules against password sharing on its streamers, and the company’s chief financial officer Hugh Johnston said that everything is going well on that front thus far.
Key Details: Johnston said this week that Disney+ password-sharing rules are “working out well for us in terms of subscriber growth.” He still expects to see incrementally more benefits from the restrictions in the coming months. Disney+ allows customers...

Password-sharing restrictions, new ad plans, and more international expansion will keep streamers growing in the years to come, according to a new survey.
The general consensus among streaming analysts is that there’s simply not that much growth to be had for providers in the United States. Generally speaking, everyone who wants a streaming subscription in the U.S. already has one, but that doesn’t mean there’s no room for growth elsewhere. A new projection from Ampere Analysis reinforces that notion, showing that global streaming subscriptions will continue to grow until they surpass 2 billion by 2029.
Key Details: Ampere says that growth in the Asia Pacific region will be key for pushing global streaming subscriptions past 2 billion by 2029. Password-sharing restrictions by Disney+, Max, Netflix, and others will be key in aiding growth. Revenues will grow almost three times faster than subscribers as streamers prioritize profits. As with any late-stage Marvel Studios production, “Deadpool & Wolverine” arrives with some accompanying homework. These movies aren’t merely standalone adventures, they are plugged into a larger framework of interconnected movies, television shows, sequels and spin-offs.
This is truer now than before, since Disney completed its absorption of 21st Century’s assets in 2019. That means that the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which was previously off-limits to both Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds again) and Wolverine, is fair game and that they have access to virtually every Marvel character.
But what should you actually watch before you see Deadpool and Wolverine team-up for their cross-universe romp? We can help, but this probably constitutes a light spoiler warning. As you can probably imagine, there are a ton of fun cameos from other parts of the MCU (and beyond). We won’t spoil those, but we will allude to more concrete callbacks that will greatly...

Disney has pulled the untitled 2026 “Star Wars” movie from the release calendar, the company announced on Friday.
The film is being replaced by “Ice Age 6,” which will release on Dec. 18, 2026. Although unconfirmed, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was supposed to direct a film about rebuilding the new Jedi Order 15 years after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker,” which has Daisy Ridley attached to reprise her role as Rey.
A filmmaker and journalist, Obaid-Chinoy directed documentaries like “Saving Face” and recently helmed episodes of the Marvel series “Ms. Marvel.” Her feature will be set the furthest in the future in the “Star Wars” timeline that we’ve seen in live-action.

However, that total does not account for overlap created by the Disney Bundle.
Will the holidays be a joyous season at the House of Mouse? Holy spoilers, Batman! This article discusses major events from the season finale of "The Penguin."
The flood waters have receded, the dust has settled, and Oswald Cobb's power-hungry Penguin is now exactly where we thought he'd be following his final scene in "The Batman" — left with nothing standing in his way for control of the city's criminal underworld. The eight-episode run of HBO's "The Penguin" lived up to its billing as "The Sopranos" in Gotham, adding all sorts of complexity and deeper layers to the one-dimensional, yet always entertaining mobster played by Colin Farrell in director Matt Reeves' 2022 blockbuster. Viewers who tuned into the spinoff series have been given a satisfying character study, detailing how an overambitious mama's boy turned into an insecure man hellbent on proving everyone wrong throughout his murderous rise to power. But for those who'll only ever end up watching the original movie and its planned...

The top-10 list adds to Disney’s efforts to make it easier for viewers to find the titles that they are most excited to watch.
The paralysis that you feel when you sign into a streaming service and can’t decide what you want to watch is real. Content discovery is one of the key focuses of nearly every platform on the market because the sooner cord-cutters can get viewers to the titles they are most interested in, the happier and more engaged those customers will be. To expedite that process, on Wednesday, Disney+ introduced a new carousel on its homepage called “Top 10 Today.” As the name suggests, the new row features the 10 most popular shows and movies on the platform every day. Another new “Star Wars” project has collided with some space debris.
Writer Steven Knight, whose “Maria” looks to be a major contender this awards season, is no longer writing the new “Star Wars” movie that would be centered around Rey (Daisy Ridley) and set after the events of 2019’s much maligned “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” Still, we were assured that the film is still very much in development.
Knight joined the project in 2023, replacing screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. The story is rumored to focus on Rey’s attempts at starting a new Jedi Academy. There is another disturbance in the Force. Screenwriter Steven Knight has departed the “Star Wars” movie set to follow Daisy Ridley’s Rey after the events of 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”
In March 2023, Variety exclusively reported that Knight had signed onto the project, replacing original screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Previously, Disney allowed new subscribers to sign up for a Disney+ subscription as an add-on to Hulu, as they can do with ESPN+, Max, and other streamers in order to keep their bills all in one place and take advantage of discounts. However, the House of Mouse has begun informing customers that they can no longer purchase Disney+ as a Hulu add-on, instead pushing users to one of the Disney Bundle options instead.
Key Details: Formerly, Disney+ could be added to Hulu for an extra $2 per month. Customers are now encouraged to sign up for the Disney Duo Basic bundle for $11 per month. Viewers who had the Disney+ add-on via Hulu are being updated to the Duo Basic plan at no additional cost.

Apple takes a hefty commission off subscriptions sold through its devices, and Disney doesn’t want to pay any longer.
Disney is looking to cut out the middleman when it comes to its streaming services… or at least one especially greedy middleman. The company is no longer allowing new and returning customers to sign up for Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN+ through Apple, which will save the House of Mouse from paying a commission on each subscription. Of course, customers can still sign up directly through Disney and stream the services on their Apple TV streaming players or other iOS devices, but they just won’t be able to pay and manage their subscription through Apple.
Key Details: Apple takes large commissions from apps that sell subscriptions on its devices. Other streamers like Netflix have also pulled the ability for customers to subscribe through Apple. Viewers can still watch Disney streaming...

Disney is raising prices on almost all individual services and bundles on Thursday, Oct. 17.
Disney may be the owner of the Happiest Place on Earth, but it is about to make tens of millions of streaming customers rather upset. I’m breaking down how the new rates compare to other streamers below, so you can decide whether or not the increased prices are worth paying.
Key Details: The cheapest Disney+ plan will cost $10 per month once the price hikes are enacted. The least expensive Disney Bundle option is only increasing by $1 per month. Disney has some of the most expensive ad-supported plans now available. Sign Up Now $9.99+ / month disneyplus.com

The new bundling option allows Boost by Kroger Plus members to add one of three Disney-owned streamers at no extra cost.
There’s no denying that customers have signaled their desire for more bundled options. A recent survey from Antenna found that bundles have a marked effect on churn, and the best part about bundles is that they can combine subscription services from across more than one industry. Grocery giant Kroger is now getting in on the bundling game, as subscribers to the Boost by Kroger Plus service can now add one of Disney’s streaming services — Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+ — as a benefit of their account.
Key Details: Ad-supported Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN+ can now be tacked onto a Boost by Kroger Plus subscription free. Customers at the $99 per year level get streaming free as long as they have their Kroger Plus account. The partnership is similar to the deal between Walmart+ and Paramount+.

Pakistan superstar Fawad Khan and Bollywood star Vaani Kapoor have started shooting romantic comedy “Abir Gulaal” at locations in and around London.
The film is directed by Aarti S. Bagdi (“Chalti Rahe Zindagi”) and produced by Indian Stories, A Richer Lens and Aarjay Pictures. Producers include Vivek B. Agrawal, Avantika Hari and Rakesh Sippy. It will be shot in the U.K. over October and November.
Bagdi said: “The film explores the journey of two individuals who unintentionally help each other heal, with love blossoming as an unexpected consequence.”
Since 2016, there has been an unofficial ban on Pakistani artists working in Indian films, following political disputes between the two countries. However, in 2023, the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition seeking to officially ban Pakistani artists from working in India. “Arts, music, sports, culture, dance, and so on are the activities which rise above nationalities, cultures, and nations and truly bring about peace,...

The latest crack at Stephen King’s acclaimed vampire novel managed to pull together a cast of recognizable faces despite being pulled from a theatrical release to go directly to Max. “Salem’s Lot” follows a writer’s return to his hometown, searching for inspiration for his next book, only to find out the place is slowly being overrun by vampires.

The International South Asian Film Festival of Canada (iSAFF) just completed its fourteenth edition and hosted the North American premiere of Usman Riaz’s “The Glassworker.” Riaz’s film is the first hand-drawn animated feature from Pakistan and the country’s official Academy Award entry for 2025.
The festival honors filmmaking in various categories; short films (international and North America), documentary filmmaking, feature filmmaking, and the annual Sher Vancouver Award for Best LGBTQ+ Film. Jurors across categories were filmmakers, content creators, performers, and more, including “Ms. Marvel” star Iman Vellani and Shahani Goswami, star of the U.K.’s official Oscar entry, “Santosh.”
This year also introduced the Rbc Film Fund in partnership with Royal Bank of Canada, which will provide five thousand Canadian dollars to each of five different iSAFF films. A year from now, iSAFF plans to celebrate the first batch of recipients from this fund and the work they’ve achieved.

Titles like ‘A Small Light’ and ‘Togo’ have been removed from Disney+ even as the streamer prepares to hike its subscription rates.
Disney+ is apparently feeling pretty confident about its ability to shrug off the ire of customers, these days. The service has enacted a new round of title removals, pulling more than 20 shows and movies from its catalog in its latest efforts to streamline. The removals themselves aren’t all that rare, but the response from Disney when asked about the pulled titles reveals a company that has no qualms about facing backlash from customers, despite the public relations year it’s had.
Key Details: Titles removed from Disney+ include “Hailey’s On It,” “Love & WWE: Bianca & Montez,” and more. Disney defended the decision to remove the titles, saying they represented less than 2% of its catalog. Disney+ plans are increasing in price starting Oct. 17. Sign Up Now $7.99+ / month disneyplus.

Streams on Disney+ allow viewers to lean back and watch a preselected lineup of shows rather than be forced to pick a new episode for themselves.
When you log into a streaming service, do you suddenly become paralyzed by the overwhelming number of titles to choose from? Well, Disney+ is aiming to help with that. On Monday, the streamer continued rolling out around-the-clock streaming channels for subscribers who don’t want to have to deal with deciding what to watch. These channels offer continuous feeds of select titles found in the on-demand library of Disney+, streaming 24 hours a day so viewers never have to try to sort through the expansive catalog and pick what they’ll watch next. The channels first launched in early September, and this week Disney+ has announced that it is adding four new options to the lineup.
