Disney has pulled the untitled 2026 “Star Wars” movie from the release calendar, the company announced on Friday.

The film is being replaced by “Ice Age 6,” which will release on Dec. 18, 2026. Although unconfirmed, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was supposed to direct a film about rebuilding the new Jedi Order 15 years after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker,” which has Daisy Ridley attached to reprise her role as Rey.

A filmmaker and journalist, Obaid-Chinoy directed documentaries like “Saving Face” and recently helmed episodes of the Marvel series “Ms. Marvel.” Her feature will be set the furthest in the future in the “Star Wars” timeline that we’ve seen in live-action.

Charter Communications wants its customers to know that better access to free entertainment is coming. Charter operates the Spectrum TV cable business, and in the last 14 months has made deals with Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Warner Bros. Discovery and other programmers that allow it to offer its cable customers free access to their various streaming services, including Disney+, Max, Paramount+ and Peacock. ‘Ironheart’ is a new MCU miniseries coming to Disney+, created by Chinaka Hodge and based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Dominique Thorne will play Riri Williams/Ironheart reprising her role after her appearance in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’.

She will star alongside Anthony Ramos, Lyric Ross, Regan Aliyah, Alden Ehrenreich, Manny Montana, Matthew Elam, and Anji White. The series was announced in December 2020 and was at one point in development hell.

New data from Ampere Analysis shows that more than 50% of the global content investment comes from just six companies.

The streaming industry is continuing to epitomize the mantra of “you’ve got to spend money to make money.” That’s the biggest takeaway from a new survey published by Ampere Analysis, which digs into the global content spend by entertainment companies. The top six content producers in the world will spend $126 billion on content in 2024, which will mark a new record high and will account for 51% of the entire global investment in content this year.

Key Details: Disney will account for 14% of all global content spending by itself this year. Of the $126 billion, $40 billion will be spent on subscription streaming services like Disney+, Paramount+ and Peacock. Several industry groups have sued the Federal Trade Commission to try and keep it from enforcing new regulations.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) hasn’t made any friends in the cable or streaming industries with its new “Click to Cancel” rule. The regulation would force companies that provide subscription services to make it easier for customers to cancel their accounts, and now several of the largest groups representing cablers and streaming operators are suing the FTC to try and keep the rule from being enforced.

Another new “Star Wars” project has collided with some space debris.

Writer Steven Knight, whose “Maria” looks to be a major contender this awards season, is no longer writing the new “Star Wars” movie that would be centered around Rey (Daisy Ridley) and set after the events of 2019’s much maligned “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” Still, we were assured that the film is still very much in development.

Knight joined the project in 2023, replacing screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. The story is rumored to focus on Rey’s attempts at starting a new Jedi Academy. (Lindelof and Britt-Gibson’s supposedly featured Rey as a 60-year-old woman.) At the time that Lindelof and Britt-Gibson were replaced, filming was intended to begin in early 2024.

There is another disturbance in the Force. Screenwriter Steven Knight has departed the “Star Wars” movie set to follow Daisy Ridley’s Rey after the events of 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”

In March 2023, Variety exclusively reported that Knight had signed onto the project, replacing original screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Lucasfilm is actively talking with potential writers to take on the story, which has been said to chronicle Rey’s efforts to start a new Jedi Academy, but the delay likely means production won’t start until well into 2025 at least.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still attached to direct the film, which would be her feature debut; she previously directed episodes of the Disney+ series “Ms. Marvel” after twice winning the Oscar for best documentary short film. Customers curious about Disney+ now have fewer choices to sign up for the service. Previously, Disney allowed new subscribers to sign up for a Disney+ subscription as an add-on to Hulu, as they can do with ESPN+, Max, and other streamers in order to keep their bills all in one place and take advantage of discounts. However, the House of Mouse has begun informing customers that they can no longer purchase Disney+ as a Hulu add-on, instead pushing users to one of the Disney Bundle options instead.

Key Details: Formerly, Disney+ could be added to Hulu for an extra $2 per month. Customers are now encouraged to sign up for the Disney Duo Basic bundle for $11 per month. Viewers who had the Disney+ add-on via Hulu are being updated to the Duo Basic plan at no additional cost.

Apple takes a hefty commission off subscriptions sold through its devices, and Disney doesn’t want to pay any longer.

Disney is looking to cut out the middleman when it comes to its streaming services… or at least one especially greedy middleman. The company is no longer allowing new and returning customers to sign up for Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN+ through Apple, which will save the House of Mouse from paying a commission on each subscription. Of course, customers can still sign up directly through Disney and stream the services on their Apple TV streaming players or other iOS devices, but they just won’t be able to pay and manage their subscription through Apple.

The new bundling option allows Boost by Kroger Plus members to add one of three Disney-owned streamers at no extra cost.

There’s no denying that customers have signaled their desire for more bundled options. A recent survey from Antenna found that bundles have a marked effect on churn, and the best part about bundles is that they can combine subscription services from across more than one industry. Grocery giant Kroger is now getting in on the bundling game, as subscribers to the Boost by Kroger Plus service can now add one of Disney’s streaming services — Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+ — as a benefit of their account.

Key Details: Ad-supported Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN+ can now be tacked onto a Boost by Kroger Plus subscription free. Customers at the $99 per year level get streaming free as long as they have their Kroger Plus account. The partnership is similar to the deal between Walmart+ and Paramount+.

The International South Asian Film Festival of Canada (iSAFF) just completed its fourteenth edition and hosted the North American premiere of Usman Riaz’s “The Glassworker.” Riaz’s film is the first hand-drawn animated feature from Pakistan and the country’s official Academy Award entry for 2025.

The festival honors filmmaking in various categories; short films (international and North America), documentary filmmaking, feature filmmaking, and the annual Sher Vancouver Award for Best LGBTQ+ Film. Jurors across categories were filmmakers, content creators, performers, and more, including “Ms. Marvel” star Iman Vellani and Shahani Goswami, star of the U.K.’s official Oscar entry, “Santosh.”
