Magazine Dreams, which premiered at Sundance in 2023, had a long road to the big screen but arrived this weekend, along with Sami Raimi-produced Locked, sci-fi horror Ash, SXSW 2024 Audience and Grand Jury Award-winner Bob Trevino Likes It and Being Maria, a biopic of Last Tango In Paris actress Maria Schneider.
We’ll see. Last weekend was a box office dud and this one looks quiet too as audiences seems to have forgotten they really liked going to movies last fall.

Female-facing horror finds a striking new voice in Julia Max, making her feature debut at SXSW with The Surrender, which, if you can accept the interpretation of David Cronenberg’s The Brood as his idea of a body-horror Kramer Vs Kramer, functions similarly as a bloody genre reworking of Postcards from the Edge. Notionally, it’s a film about grief and how the death of a father reverberates around a tight-knit family that has drifted apart. Max handles that very well, but the real meat is in the story of a mother and daughter who find that his sudden absence opens up a whole other can of worms.
To keep you on your toes, Max opens the film with a bang; following a trail of blood on what looks to be floor of a cave or crypt, the camera finds a frightening demonic creature gnawing away at a human body.

Humanity has been sharing stories about horrific monsters since time immemorial, and some of these tales have become so ingrained in culture that they end up outlasting the societies that created them. That’s why we still see movies based on mythic figures like Hercules and the Minotaur over two thousand years after the end of the Hellenistic period.
And with even Christopher Nolan borrowing from Greek Mythology in his upcoming Odyssey adaptation, we’ve decided to compile a list celebrating six of the scariest depictions of ancient Greek monsters in film. After all, an epic quest is only as thrilling as the strange beasts that our heroes encounter along the way.
In an effort to keep things varied, we’ll only be including one entry per monster. That being said, don’t forget to comment below with your own mythic favorites if you think we missed a particularly spooky example.

Car-jackers beware. Hannibal Lector himself is administering a new brand of punishment in the upcoming thriller from producer Sam Raimi. Locked is directed by David Yarovesky, who has collaborated with James Gunn on the film Brightburn and also directed the disco-centric music video for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 titled “Guardians Inferno.” Yarovesky directs from a script written by Michael Arlen Ross, who penned Turistas. The thriller is small-scale and only features Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins in the cast.
The official synopsis reads,
“From producer Sam Raimi comes a relentless horror-thriller where luxury becomes deadly. When Eddie (Bill Skarsgård) breaks into a luxury SUV, he steps into a deadly trap set by William (Anthony Hopkins), a self-proclaimed vigilante delivering his own brand of twisted justice. With no means of escape, Eddie must fight to survive in a ride where escape is an illusion, survival is a nightmare, and justice shifts into high gear.

As far as horror directors go, they don’t get much more influential than Sam Raimi. If he’d only made The Evil Dead trilogy, his place in the pantheon would be guaranteed, but he also made two kick-ass thrillers, A Simple Plan and The Gift, and – oh yeah – the original Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. After a brief return to superhero movie directing with Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness (which made just under a billion dollars worldwide), Raimi is set for a return to horror with Send Help, which now has a January 30th, 2026 release date.
His first legit horror flick since 2009’s underrated Drag Me to Hell, Raimi’s Doctor Strange co-star Rachel McAdams takes the lead in what’s being called a survival thriller/horror film. Initial reports called it “Misery meets Cast Away,” with it said to be a two-hander. Film scooper Daniel Richtman...

It's hard to believe that director Sam Raimi, someone who has become synonymous with the horror genre, has only made one real horror movie in the last three decades. It's a testament to the enduring influence and brilliance of his Evil Dead movies (not to mention the underrated superhero horror movie Darkman). Now, the filmmaker is returning to horror with Send Help, which now has a release date. The film will play in theaters on January 30, 2026, and is set to be released by 20th Century Studios.

Elio, the latest Pixar-Disney endeavor, has been pushed back one week, and Raimi's Send Help and James L. Brooks' Ella McCay both received theatrical release dates. As we continue to watch the last vestiges of primetime dramas fight for their lives on Fox for various reasons, the network has thrown their all into an endless stream of reality television for our viewing pleasure.
Say what you will about reality TV, but Fox knows its bread and butter and delivers when it comes to anything involving Gordon Ramsay and whatever rendition of brutal survival adventure television that has us shouting obscenities from our couches.
Now, Fox has introduced Extracted, and I hate to say it, but they got me in a way that has me judging myself for whatever perverse pleasure I’m finding in the exploitation of families for cold, hard cash.

Demons have haunted humanity's tales since the dawn of time, with different parts of the world coming up with uniquely nightmarish monsters to be afraid of. Since the era of filmmaking, however, stories of demon possession have become a part of global pop culture. One of the most recent additions to this subgenre of horror movies is The Pope's Exorcist, available to stream on Netflix. Though a promising story based on a real exorcist, the movie failed to bring anything new to the genre.
However, there are some impactful horror movies with a demon as the villain. Some of these are icons of the genre, whereas others haven't received the credit they deserve. The majority of these demons have chilling physical forms, terrifying origin stories, and shocking abilities that make them the scariest demonic forces in horror. That said, even those invisible to the naked eye are capable of terrifying the bravest viewers.

When I was a kid, I wanted to watch every Alison Lohman movie I could find. The actor may not be a household name, but throughout the 2000s, she starred in some of the most interesting films being made, often opposite more experienced stars like Michelle Pfieffer, Nicolas Cage, and Ewan McGregor. Lohman always played characters younger than herself, and I mentally categorized her alongside other teen stars of the moment like AnnaSophia Robb and Keke Palmer -- even though she was born in 1979.
Sometimes, Lohman was cast as a cherubic beauty, but other times she played thornier characters, including troubled teens, child con artists, and, perhaps most famously, a "hag"-hating promotion-seeker. The actor had appeared in fewer than two dozen movies in her career, yet the majority of them were compelling in some way. Then, around 2009, she largely disappeared from the spotlight. The following article contains discussions of illness and suicide.
With its massive main cast, it's unsurprising that Shameless also featured a large variety of supporting characters throughout, with many having a significant impact, especially Bianca Samson. Premiering in 2011, Shameless ran for 11 seasons and revolved around the dysfunctional, lower-class Gallagher family comprised of alcoholic patriarch Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy) and his six children. The show walked a fine line between dark comedy and tackling serious, devastating issues like disease and addiction.
Though the Gallagher family were the stars of the show, Shameless' various supporting characters helped make the series as beloved as it is. The Gallaghers' dysfunction certainly extends to their romantic relationships, as Frank and his kids have a seemingly revolving door of partners. Most of these relationships are doomed from the start, but a rare few are able to puncture the Gallaghers' gritty shells and affect them in ways they never thought possible.

Sharon Stone, the Hollywood legend that starred in films like Basic Instinct and Casino, has called out Sam Raimi, her director in 1995’s The Quick and the Dead, for being disloyal to her after she reportedly gave so much to him: “He didn’t thank me, he didn’t hire me again, he didn’t acknowledge the relationship.”
Stone appeared at the Torino Film Festival, where she spoke about Raimi, and what followed after they worked together in The Quick and the Dead. Also a producer on the film, Stone was involved in making some very important decisions, as she recounted:
“I had my great Italian cinematographer Dante Spinotti, and I was very blessed to produce and to have the opportunity to cast this film. The director Sam Raimi, who I had an opportunity to bring from B movies to A movies, and then he directed Spider-Man and became a very big A movie director.

The name Sam Raimi has become synonymous with the horror genre over the years thanks to the Evil Dead trilogy, but following the release of Army of Darkness in 1992, he took a lengthy break from blood and guts to try his hand at other projects. The results were spectacular, to say the least, with the director bringing us such favorites as A Simple Plan, and – of course – Sony’s first Spider-Man trilogy. After more than 15 years away, though, Raimi returned to the genre that made him famous with the release of Drag Me to Hell in 2009, a movie in his filmography that’s not talked about nearly enough.
Now, Scream Factory hopes to change all that, as they’ve recently released some gorgeous 4K versions of Drag Me to Hell that are perfect to stuff in the stockings of horror lovers everywhere this holiday season. First up is the Collector's...

When we think of director Sam Raimi and horror, the first film that comes to mind is The Evil Dead. This 1983 supernatural haunt started a franchise that would redefine 80s horror and make multiple genre icons. However, there’s another beloved horror gem that the mainstream community rarely talks about because of its placement in Raimi’s filmography. That would be his 2009 film Drag Me to Hell. The horror thriller celebrated its 15th anniversary this year, and Scream Factory is honoring the occasion with new 4K editions.

Sam Raimi’s 2009 return to horror after the 1992 Army of Darkness, Drag Me to Hell, is from a more innocent time. Just like ye old E.C. Comics and Tales From the Darkside, Drag Me to Hell is a morality play, but wrapped in a big-budget extravaganza. The film has those hyper-kinetic camera moves and zooms, Raimi’s trademark. This film follows Alison Lohman’s (Gamer) Christine Brown, a loan officer in Los Angeles who’s got her eye on the assistant manager promotion. In order to get it, she’s got to win over her boss, who’s leaning towards giving her misogynistic co-worker the job. Unfortunately, she decides to show her boss that she can “make the hard decisions.” This means that when Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) comes...

While Sam Raimi is revered as one of the all-time great horror directors, Netflix's 2024 release Don't Move highlights a disappointing ongoing trend in his career. The movie, directed by Brian Netto and Adam Schindler, has Raimi as a high-profile producer, highlighting his ongoing investment and interest in the horror genre. However, despite having helmed genre classics like The Evil Dead and Drag Me To Hell, there is a disappointing truth to Sam Raimi's movie career that Don't Move exemplifies.
For all his success in horror, Raimi hasnt actually directed that many horror movies. After Evil Dead's third installment, the director gradually shifted to new territories. Notably, he directed the 2000s Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire, considered today one of the best superhero film adaptations. Around the same time, Raimi transitioned to the role of producer one that would become his main interest for decades to come. Don't Move...

There are so many movies released every year that it can be hard to keep up. The many different streaming services have made it difficult to even know when a certain movie is out. And when it comes to horror, these issues seem doubled. So adding in a familiar name can really be make-or-break in terms of getting the right eyeballs on it. And there are few names in horror that garner immediate interest like Sam Raimi. Despite not directing a horror film himself since 2009’s Drag Me To Hell (though that will end with his recently announced Send Help) the filmmaker has had quite the eye for talent. And with a film with the exact same name taking up the news cycle this week, the Sam Raimi-produced Don’t Move needs all the help it can get.
The story of Don’t Move follows a woman being pursued by a seasoned killer.

Rachel McAdams is currently in talks to play the lead role in Sam Raimis new thriller Send Help, and itll mark her first appearance in a horror film in 19 years. Send Help has been described as a cross between the Tom Hanks survival drama Cast Away and the Stephen King novel Misery, so it sounds like itll be a psychological horror two-hander set on a remote island. This will be Raimis first straightforward horror movie since 2009s supernatural chiller Drag Me to Hell, as hes focused on big-budget franchise installments since then.
McAdams potential casting in Send Help is an exciting prospect. If shes able to negotiate a deal, itll mark a reunion with Raimi after she reprised her role as Stephen Stranges love interest Christine Palmer in the Marvel Studios sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Anybody down for a Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness reunion? No, we've not got confirmation of a Doctor Strange 3 directed by Sam Raimi just yet (although we do live in hope) — but we are getting word that one of the stars of the Evil Dead director's first foray into the MCU could be about to team up on a new horror thriller. According to Deadline, Rachel McAdams is circling a starring role in Send Help, a 20th Century Studios chiller on which Raimi will serve as both producer and director.
As we reported back in July, Send Help — based on an original script from Baywatch writing duo Damian Shannon and Mark Swift — is currently being pitched as an island-set two-hander that falls somewhere between Rob Reiner's Misery and Robert Zemeckis' Cast Away. Further details on the plot however remain strictly under wraps at this point in time,...

Having received mixed to negative reviews upon their initial releases, a few horror films from the 2000s are worth taking another look at. The 2000s prompted some memorable horror protagonists and horror sequels, but a few films took a bit longer to find their audience. Films like Cloverfield and Drag Me to Hell are widely discussed entries from the 2000s that have only continued to grow in popularity, while films like Thirteen Ghosts and Slither took longer to earn respect.
In a genre with rich, inventive storytelling and special effects, it's only understandable that certain films were widely dismissed when they first hit theaters. A few of the films have earned massive cult followings, while others are on their way to achieving a similar status. With enough time having passed since they were first released, there's something to enjoy in each of these horror films initially marked as a failure.

Bonnie Aarons is surprisingly most recognizable when she looks nothing like herself, considering that her most famous role is the demon nun Valak in The Conjuring 2. Outside The Conjuring franchise, Aarons has appeared in over 50 movies, including some unexpected ones.
