The bar room is inspired by the bar room from Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980). In both films, the bartenders are dressed in red tuxedos, carry themselves in a sophisticated manner, have a strange friendship with the lead male, are not concerned with payment and are unable to leave. In addition, the primary light source in the bar and lounge shines from below rather than above. Finally, a variation on the iconic orange and red carpet design from Overlook Hotel hallways can be seen in the seating area.
The voice of The Starship Avalon belongs to voiceover artist Emma Clarke, who is also one of the iconic 'Mind the Gap' voices on London Underground.
The touchscreen interfaces that the characters interact with on various computers were developed on the Unity gaming engine. This eliminated the need of adding those interfaces in post-production.
In the deleted scene "Kiss In The Photo Booth",Jennifer Lawrence kicks off her high-heel shoes and walks barefoot through the Avalons public water fountain.This was improvised by the actress because the shoes were hurting her feet and because she simply wanted to run her bare feet through the cold water.
According to production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas, the inspiration for the ship's rotary design came from observing the seeds of maple trees, and how they spin like tiny helicopters as they fall.
