Back in 2003 scenes of chaos as the government troop round up citizens. A man hides in his house. Awhile later he comes outside, no one else is around the small town. Bill explores the area, he goes to a local natural gas plant and opens a service valve, back at home he is now cooking with gas. Bill is a survivalist and is well equipped for a long time.
Three years later a man stumbles into one of the deep holes Bill has around his electrified property fence. Wary, at first Bill tries to get the man to keep on his way to Boston; however, the man successfully pleads for a meal. Bill agrees and takes him to his house and cooks a nice meal of roast rabbit with all the trimmings and a Beaujolais. Frank, the newcomer is impressed with Bill's setup. He notices a piano and digs through the sheet music, finding a Linda Rondstadt booklet. Frank tries to play and sing but is off-key and hits the wrong notes. Exasperated, Bill takes over the keyboard and does a much better version. Frank and Bill connect and soon are showered up and in bed together. Frank announces he isn't a whore for one meal and intends to stay awhile.
A few years later Bill and Frank are still living together, Frank is getting frustrated at the lonely life and wants to brighten up the village. He has also made radio contact with others and wants to invite them over. Bill is alarmed but soon the two men are ha, having lunch with Joel and Tess, who are on one of their forays outside of the Boston QZ. Bill doesn't like Joel, although Joel understands why. Joel warns Bill there will be raiders attacking them, they seem secure but Joel and Tess can trade things with them to improve the security.
Later still Bill is getting older and can't run laps around the village as well as he used to. One night raiders do attack but the better security holds them off, the attacker are burned and shot. Bill takes a bullet to the stomach area and Frank manages to get him inside.
Now, even later both men are old and grey, Frank is in a wheelchair. He wants to commit suicide rather than carrying on, and explains to Bill to put pills in the wine at their last meal together. Bill reluctantly agrees then tells Frank he also drank the poisoned wine, not wanting to live alone. Both men retire to their bedroom.
Joel and Ellie arrive at the compound, Joel knows the pass-code and enters the gate. They look around at the quiet setting, Joel eventually finds the locked bedroom. Ellie meanwhile has found the suicide note Bill left. for Joel. Bill's last will is for Joel to protect someone as he did with Frank and grants everything to him. Ellie and Joel have hot showers and prepare to leave. Joel doesn't want Ellie to have a gun but she finds a semi-auto and tucks it into her pack.
They take Bill's old blue Chevy S10 truck and hit the road.
