Prime Video has launched the first official trailer for Kate Beckinsale's next kickass actioner Canary Black, which will see the former Underworld star play a top CIA operative that is forced to go rogue to save her kidnapped husband while simultanously working to prevent the start of World War 3.

When you’ve reached part three in a movie franchise and you’ve realised that making it a prequel, and that dropping the main selling point may have affected your box office, what do you do? Make more hairy swearwolf and vampire movies of course. That’s exactly what you should do! I mean, it’s a tactic that’s been going on for years in Hollywood; to rinse a known, and existing IP for all it’s worth, in the name of making a quick buck. Usually in a desperate attempt to satiate fans of certain characters or franchises, and often at the expense of a decent story, sadly. Just look at the Die Hard and Terminator franchises. The first three Die Hard movies are great, and showcase the trials and tribulations of Bruce Willis’ weary, wise-cracking cop perfectly. Then the series lost its way and, sadly due to Willis’ unfortunate health issues,...

She Came Back: Amybeth McNulty of Stranger Things and Anne with an E stars in psychological thriller
About four and a half years ago, it was announced that Amybeth McNulty of the Netflix shows Anne with an E and Stranger Things (although she hadn’t been on Stranger Things yet at the time) had signed on to star in a suspense thriller called Maternal. If you’ve been wondering what happened with that project, we finally have an update to share with you today: Maternal has been retitled She Came Back, and it’s now available to watch through Dark Matter TV, Apple, Vudu, Google Play, and Microsoft Xbox. It can be rented for $3.99 or purchased for $9.99.
Part of the reason for the long delay is the fact that Maternal started filming in early 2020, then the production got disrupted by the pandemic lockdowns. The project had to be put back together at a later date so filming could be finished.
Coming our way from TriCoast Worldwide, Red Hill,...

It may be difficult to think of a film series that is more aesthetically dated than the "Underworld" movies, and I include certain century-old silent movies in that statement. The first "Underworld" film was released in the fall of 2003, and it was infused with all the genre trappings of its era. The long black leather coats, the blue-tinted photography, the use of slow-motion, and the stoic-yet-capable badass heroes all reek of post-"Matrix" malaise, appealing only to young people who were 16 in September of 2003. What's more, the film's soundtrack featured some terrible metal tunes that old-world metalheads found to be shrill and whiny. Sorry, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, and The Icarus Line.
The premise of "Underworld" sounds fun on paper, but the bleak, steely tone of the movie made the movie less-than-fun to watch. For centuries, vampires and werewolves — called Lycans — have been at war, killing each other out of sight from the human world.

When “Underworld” premiered in 2003, it was dismissed by critics, partly because its vamps, particularly Pvc-clad lead character Selene (Kate Beckinsale) hardly ever bite anyone. But the action-horror film, which costarred Scott Speedman, Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy, went on to spawn an entire franchise about the war between the Lycans and the Vampires.
If you want to watch the series in chronological order, you’d have to start with the second film, which is set in the early 15th century and doesn’t feature Selene at all.
Here’s how to watch all the “Underworld” movies in order.
Rhona Mitra and Michael Sheen (Screen Gems)
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009)
Although we got a hint of werewolf Lucian (Michael Sheen)’s tragic love story in the first “Underworld” film, this prequel tells how he fell in love with vampire Sonja (Rhona Mitra), despite the fact he was, essentially a slave to her father,...

Written by a Scot, adapted from an American novel, with a US director and two Brits playing Americans in the lead roles, HBO and Sky Atlantic co-production The Time Traveler’s Wife could scarcely be more transatlantic. The six-part time-travel rom-com, written by Steven Moffat based on Audrey Niffenegger’s hit 2003 book, is the story of Henry DeTamble, a Chicago librarian with a fantasy genetic condition that causes him to unexpectedly drop out and into his timeline, disappearing and reappearing in inconvenient times, places and states of undress. Played by Theo James, Henry is the titular time traveller, while his titular wife is Claire Abshire, played here by Rose Leslie (and by Rachel McAdams in the earlier movie.) Here’s where you’ll have seen James and Leslie before.

A new version of the Emmy-winning space opera television series Babylon 5 is in the works. The CW has put in development Babylon 5, described as a “from-the-ground-up reboot” of the critically acclaimed 1990s series, from original series creator J. Michael Straczynski and Warner Bros. Television.
Written by Straczynski, the reboot revolves around John Sheridan (played by Bruce Boxleitner in the original series), an Earthforce officer with a mysterious background, who is assigned to Babylon 5, a five-mile-long space station in neutral space, a port of call for travelers, smugglers, corporate explorers and alien diplomats at a time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war. By the power of Grayskull, Netflix’s list of new releases for July 2021 is here!
As you may have been able to tell by that clever opening, July is the month that Masters of the Universe: Revelation arrives on Netflix. This animated series from Kevin Smith continues the classic stories of He-Man and his buff friends. If nostalgia not be what ye seek, Netflix has plenty other original series this month as well. The amazingly hilarious sketch series I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson returns for season 2 on July 6. Also returning for a second season are Beastars, Never Have I Ever (both on July 15), and Outer Banks (July 30).

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

Young adult horror fans (and those who are young adult at heart) will have a great time scrolling through Netflix in July 2021.
The streaming giant announced the new original movies and series coming to the service in July, as well as the library titles it will feature for the foreseeable future.
Among the biggest projects include a trilogy of “Fear Street” films from director Leigh Janiak (“Honeymoon”) and based on the teen horror franchise by R.L. Stine. The three movies will debut over consecutive weeks on Netflix, with the first dropping July 2.

Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead isn't your average zombie movie. The zombies that reside in Snyder's apocalyptic Las Vegas are fast-paced, intelligent, and organized, presenting a lethal threat of the utmost degree. There's a bonkers Elvis Presley impersonator and an undead tiger, and the whole flesh-eating bunch is led by zombie king Zeus (played by Rich Cetrone) and zombie alpha Queen (played by Athena Perample). These zombies have some semblance of human intelligence and are hell-bent on keeping other species from invading their community. Much like animals and humans, they have a social hierarchy among their kind, with the leaders communicating with their kingdom in sentient ways. To bring these alpha roles to life, Snyder appointed seasoned stunt professionals.

Theo James and Rose Leslie have been cast in the lead role of HBO’s upcoming series based on “The Time Traveler’s Wife.”
Based on Audrey Niffenegger’s novel of the same name, the series tells the story of Clare (Leslie) and Henry (James), and a marriage with a problem — time travel.
Clare is described as fiery, clever and unstoppable – and for most of her life she’s had an amazing secret. Since she was six years old Clare has had an imaginary friend: a kind and funny man, sometimes old, sometimes young, who appears in the woods behind her house and tells her tales of the future. Visits from the mysterious Henry are the bright spots in the tedium of her childhood. As the years pass, and she grows into a beautiful young woman, she starts to realise her friend is not imaginary – he’s a time traveler, visiting from the future.

India Eisley grew up on sets because her mother was an actress, and she booked her first role when she was only 10 years old. Her 15-year career has thus far consisted of quite a few films in addition to television (“The Secret Life of the American Teenager”). Now, Eisley portrays the real-life Fauna Hodel, a woman who grew up believing she was mixed race, only to learn some dark truths about her origin story much later in life, in TNT’s limited series “I Am The Night.”

While Look Away might dive into a lot of teenage-minded subjects, the themes of isolation and insecurity at the center of the psychological thriller’s narrative are easily relatable to anyone at any age. Starring India Eisley as the film’s protagonist Maria, we watch as the awkward and overly shy teen grapples with her identity when she decides to let her doppelgänger take control of her life, which ends up resulting in some tragic circumstances.
Written and directed by Assaf Bernstein, Look Away also stars Jason Isaacs, Mira Sorvino, Penelope Mitchell, and Harrison Gilbertson, and it arrives in limited theaters this Friday, courtesy of Vertical Entertainment.
Earlier this week, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Bernstein, as well as with co-stars Eisley and Isaacs, about working together on Look Away as well as how the film’s story taps into the everyday isolation most of us feel...

Every October, we stab them with knives, killing their regular appearances and bringing them to new life with sharpened teeth, ghoulish gazes, and impossibly wide, sinister smiles. We make pumpkins into little monsters every year, but what if they came to life on their own... and wanted revenge for the years of jack-o'-lantern carvings, discarded guts, and baked seeds? Darin Beckstead's Proof of Concept for his planned feature film, Evil Nature, expertly explores this unnerving "what if?" with ample amounts of holiday humor and creature-centric horror. We've been provided with the fun and frightening Evil Nature Proof of Concept to share with Daily Dead readers, along with an exclusive Q&A with director Darin Beckstead.

The last time we saw Kate Beckinsale’s blood-sucking, wolf-slaying, blade swishing Selene she was battling a digital were-blob in a car park at the arse end of Underworld: Awakening: the abominable third sequel which belted the franchise into apparent oblivion. Failing to keep her promise of reclaiming the world from Lycans, made during Awakening’s tepid finale, Selene vanished from our screens. Five years later and following a staggering turn in Love and Friendship, Kate Beckinsale returns, back on autopilot, into her comfort zone and to the role that made her famous. While half a decade can’t quite waft away the stench of its putrid predecessor, Underworld: Blood Wars is surprisingly decent and easily the best of the franchise so far.

Being a big fan of the Underworld series, I’ve been anxiously awaiting Selene’s return to the big screen after four long years, and thankfully, that wait comes to an end with the release of Underworld: Blood Wars this weekend. For the most part, my patience was rewarded, as there’s a lot of fun stuff to be found in Blood Wars. Although the film does have its share of issues (more on that later), by and large, Kate Beckinsale’s “badass as usual” re-emergence as everyone’s favorite Death Dealer is highly enjoyable, and director Anna Foerster does a great job infusing this latest chapter with enthralling action sequences that rank among some of my favorite fights yet from the Underworld franchise.

Saturday Am Update: It is looking like a very close race at the top of the weekend box office as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is suffering a sharper drop than we expected, looking at a $23-24 million weekend while Universal's Sing is looking like it will hit around $23-25 million. Making things even more interesting is the performance of Fox's Hidden Figures, which may also have a shot at the #1 slot after bringing in an estimated $7.57 million on Friday, heading toward at least $21 million for the three-day weekend. However, with an "A+" CinemaScore word could spread quickly for Hidden Figures leaving Sunday's box office as the big question mark as to whether or not it will be able to surge above early projections. Meanwhile, the only new wide release this weekend was Screen Gems' Underworld: Blood Wars, which debuted with an estimated $4.85 million, headed toward a $13-14 million opening.

This Friday, Underworld: Blood Wars arrives in theaters courtesy of Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment. This latest chapter in the ongoing Underworld saga has Death Dealer Selene (Kate Beckinsale) up against a new Lycan foe named Marius (Tobias Menzies), who will stop at nothing to find out the whereabouts of her hybrid daughter, whose special abilities hold the key to the werewolves’ survival against their vampiric adversaries.
