Pearry Reginald Teo, the Singaporean-born genre filmmaker behind the Bai Ling-starring The Gene Generation and Dmx‘s last movie, Fast Vengeance, has died. He was 44.

Teo died Thursday of an unknown cause in his home in North Hollywood, his rep Italia Gandolfo told The Hollywood Reporter.

The writer-director’s body of work included the Hellraiser-inspired Necromentia (2009) and The Assent (2019), a movie about exorcism that featured Tatum O’Neal and premiered at the Toronto After Dark Festival.

Teo also served as an executive producer on Warner Bros.’ Cloud Atlas, directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer.

The Gene Generation (2007), released by Lionsgate and made for a reported $2.5 million, starred Ling as a kick-ass assassin battling DNA hackers and included a cameo by Faye Dunaway.

Fast Vengeance (2021), starring martial arts star D.Y. Sao, centered on the world of underground motorcycle racing. (Sao and Teo would reunite for 2022’s Shadow Master.)

If there’s one director whose films I will watch without hesitation or question, it’s Pearry Teo. In fact his filmic career is actually one that is key to mine. His second film, the 2009 fear flick Necromentia (which I still think out-Hellraiser’d Hellraiser itself), was one of the first films I ever reviewed professionally; and I’ve reviewed each and every one of his films since. Why? Because of the impact his twisted vision in Necromentia had on me and because no matter the story, no matter the budget, Teo always finds something interesting, admittedly often dark, to do with the subject matter.

Strange Blood, from producer producer Pearry Teo (Necromentia, Witchville), is the feature directorial debut of famed music video director and photographer Chad Michael Ward – who has previously worked with the likes of Static-x and Marilyn Manson. With the film set for a VOD debut later this month, distributors XLrator Media have released a brand new trailer and poster for the film… And you might spot a familiar name pop up on-screen at one point during the trailer.

When a brilliant but obsessive scientist goes to extremes to develop a universal cure for all disease, he finds himself infected with a bizarre parasite that begins to transform him into a bloodthirsty madman. Time running out, and with the aid of his med student assistant, he must find a way to stop the monster that is growing within and prevent the rest of the world from being “cured.”

Directed by Pearry Teo (Necromentia, Witchville) and produced by Kim Durham for Meraxes Entertainment, Pale Horse is a brand new gothic horror currently in post-production. Little, beyond the teaser trailer for the film on the official Facebook page and the fact the film is a new take on the voodoo mythos, is known about the movie – but it does have a stellar cast of genre talent, including Eileen Dietz (The Exorcist), Alexandra Bard (Strange Blood), Perish Dignam, Taylor Plecity, Jimbo Barnett and Lorenzo Leonard.

XLrator Media is set to distribute Pearry Reginald Teo's (Witchville) The Evil Inside. This film was previously titled Dead Inside and production on the film completed in 2011. The Evil Inside will launch this August (2013) on DVD and VOD. The film deals with visions and mental illness. Sarah (Hannah Ward) is at the center of both phenomenons. And, her friends begin to disappear during an innocuous sleepover. Is Sarah responsible for these disappearances, or can she prevent more murder with help from her premonitions? There are only a few early reviews available for The Evil Inside. However, the critic Pestilence liked the film's characterizations: "characterisation[s are] suitably strong, with well rounded (if not entirely likable) protagonists." Though, the film's protagonist might be the actual villain, in this release. Dread Central has given this horror title three out of five. We are excited to announce that Bedlam Stories will be released as a Novel on September 15, 2013.

Initially, the book will be a black and white paperback, but there are plans to create an app for mobile devices as a compendium for the Novel.

Bedlam Stories is a novel based on an existing franchise, which is also to be a new movie directed by creator Pearry Teo (Necromentia, Witchville, The Dark Prince), from Teo/Ward Productions.

Bedlam Stories Synopsis

Set in the 1920s, intrepid reporter Nelly Bly fakes insanity to gain admission into the infamous Bedlam Asylum. While researching her expose, Nellie meets a young patient, Dorothy, who has delusions of a fantasy land she calls “Oz.

If you’ve been a long time reader of Blogomatic3000 (now, of course Nerdly) you’ll know how huge a fan I am of director Pearry Teo. He has helmed some fantastic straight to DVD movies – some of which put big-budget cinema flicks to shame – including the awesome Necromentia, Witchville and Dead Inside (aka The Evil Inside).

His latest film, The Dark Prince, is another take on the Dracula legend which stars Brit actor Luke Roberts as the titular character and Jon Voight as Van Helsing. The film, which was lensed in Romania, is currently at the Cannes Film Market and director Teo has revealed the films poster on his Facebook page (which if you’ve any interest in low-budget filmmaking you really should be following).

It’s been three years since I first discovered the work of Pearry Teo. Back in the early days of this very site I was sent a horror film to review called Necromentia and immediately fell in love with the Hellraiser-esque nightmare – so much so that at the time I approached Teo for an interview (which he duly gave) and named it in my Top 10 of the year. Since then I have eagerly awaited news on each and every one of his films… From Witchville to Dead Inside, possible sequels to Gene Generation and Necromentia and his current project, the epic-sounding The Return of Captain Nemo.

Yes, our lives revolve around Google. It's gone from Yahoo!'s chumpy little brother, to the biggest website in the world. It's so big that Google somehow went from a noun to a verb! The people behind this kind of success have got to have their heads on straight. Let's hope the eight Google engineers who joined forces to produce the upcoming horror film Dead Inside were some of the good Google workers, not the ones who just hang around by the candy machine and try to say something that sounds smart.

Written by Jennifer Zhang and directed by Pearry Teo, Dead Inside is a creepy film set at a party where bad things begin to happen after one character has a premonition of another's death. Zhang is also featured in the film along with stars Lala Hensley, Matthew Mercer, Rayne Bidder, James Adam Lim, Tara Strand and Sage Howard.

MyAnna Buring is the name of the Breaking Dawn actress who portrays Tanya, head of the Denali coven. Her past interactions with Edward Cullen are enough to make Bella a tad nervous, but hey, what’s past is past. What was it like for Buring on the set? Let’s find out by watching today’s Twilight video offering.

Of course readers of Stephenie Meyer’s novels know the sexy blondes of the Denali cover are also “vegetarian vampires”. Kate, Irina, Garrett, Carmen and Eleazar are also family members, though the latter two are dark-haired and come from Spain. Kate or Katerina has a special ability to shock anyone who touches her in the books. Garrett starts out as nomadic vampire when we first meet him. At one time the Alaskans were also joined by Sasha, their adoptive mother…dun dun dun.

Breaking Dawn Huddle with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson...

The Syfy channel and I have not always gotten along the best. Sure, they gave me Battlestar Gallactica, but they also gave me Sanctuary, one of the worse sci-fi/fantasy shows I have ever seen. I always go into Syfy original programming with low expectations, so I didn't expect much from Witchville. Even so, Witchville was on a level of the bad movie scale that is reserved for movies like Birdemic and After Last Season, simultaneously campy, silly, and boring.

Prince Malachy (Luke Goss) is slowly traveling home taking plenty of time for boozing and carousing when his father dies. He returns home accompanied by his buddies Jason (Ed Speleers) and Erik (Andrew Pleavin), and a mystical crackpot named Kramer (Simon Thorp) claims that all the troubles facing the realm can be easily explained. There are witches around, and they need to be burned! Long story short, Kramer is right,...

Wake Wood - Is Hammer Films' third film since breaking back onto the scene. From what I've read it's a really good film that straddles the line between classic British occult and modern ghost story. Certainly one to track down considering Hammer's recent track record out of the gate.

13 Assassins - comes from Asian legend Takashi Mikke. This is one of the most highly acclaimed films of the year (review) and is balls-out amazing and quite possibly one of the best Samurai films ever made - not just in terms of staging and action, but in terms of emotional content. Highly recommended, even for those who don't really care to follow Asian cinema.

Hobo with a Shotgun -- is the splatter-iffic, grindhouse Canadian oddball movie that time forgot. From Jason Eisener it's one for those of you always looking for the craziest sh@t going.

Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville (pictured) has been cast in the title role in Captain Nemo, Shoreline Entertainment's 3D action movie set to start filming in China in August.

The steampunk adventure will see Nemo join forces with President Ulysses Grant to battle an evil genius who is causing naval disasters, reports HeatVision.

Pearry Teo (who helmed The Gene Generation, Necromentia and TV movie Witchville) will direct the feature, described as a sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

Universal has moved the release date of Snow White and the Huntsman (starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, with Charlize Theron as the evil queen) from December 2012 to June 1 that year.

This means it will debut ahead of Relativity Media's rival project, Brothers Grimm: Snow White, which comes out on June 29 and stars Lily Collins and Armie Hammer, with Julia Roberts as its evil queen. Mirror mirror on the wall,...

Lionsgate has announced they will release Peary Teo's Witchville on DVD on July 5, 2011. The dark fantasy film starring Luke Goss premiered in on SyFy to 1.5 million viewers and features some big genre names including Ed Speleers (Eragon), Andrew Pleavin (Inception) and MyAnna Buring (upcoming The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn).

Synopsis:

Prince Malachi (Goss) and his friend Jason (Speleers) are forced to match wits with a strong coven of witches who have taken over their kingdom after the death of the king. Led by the evil Red Queen (Sarah Douglas, Superman), the coven has destroyed the land, leaving the prince and his merry men to defend their honor and home.

Pearry Teo, director of The Gene Generation (review), Necromentia (review) and Syfy's Witchville will tackle Dead Inside which we're told will be a spine-tingling hybrid of Eastern and Western horror influences.

Directing from a script by Jennifer Zhang, Dead Inside is a mix of "teen slasher films in the vein of "Scream" and "Final Destination" with those from Asian horror films such as "The Ring" and "The Grudge"." According to 28Dla, Teo is scouting Victorian Era houses that can fulfill the required creep factor.

One of my favourite films of last year was the straight to DVD flick Necromentia. Directed by Pearry Teo (Gene Generation, Witchville), the film is a Hellraiser-esque tale that mixes freakish, nightmarish imagery, sadomasochism, gore, torture and dark twisted storytelling, to tell a story about how far you would go for love.

Now that Teo’s latest flick Witchville has finally aired on Syfy, the writer/director has announced that he’s begun work on a sequel to Necromentia. From his official Facebook page:

I'll tell you! SyFy has announced two new movies that will be appearing on their screens. They're billed as "fun", but I think they should just be seen as an excuse for drinking games.

To whit: 

"Take one drink for every washed-up, formerly touted as the 'Next Big Thing', star you see in the cast list...."

"Take two drinks if washed-up star has done cheesy abs revealing pictures to remind folks of what a hunk they are."

"Take three drinks every time someone says 'That's impossible!'"

According to Pearry Reginald Teo, speaking on his Facebook account, the director of Gene Generation, Necromentia, and the upcoming Witchville has halted production on the long-awaited sequel, Gene Generation 2.0. On his page Teo writes:

I’m putting Gene Generation 2.0 on hold right now. Please contact your department heads for further details. Not willing to compromise creatively with Ascension Pictures. No details given, thank you.

Meanwhile Teo’s Witchville, which stars Luke Goss (Blade 2, Hellboy 2), Ed Speelers (Eragon), Andrew Pleavin (300, Blood: The Last Vampire), Myanna Buring (The Descent, Doomsday) and Sarah Douglas (Superman 1, 2), airs in the Us on May 22nd 2010 on SyFy.

Witchville stars Luke Goss (Blade 2, Hellboy 2), Ed Speelers (Eragon), Andrew Pleavin (300, Blood: The Last Vampire), Myanna Buring (The Descent, Doomsday) and Sarah Douglas (Superman 1, 2), in a medival fantasy drama that sees:

Prince Malachy (Goss) return to his father’s kingdom after the Crusades. His first impression is that a bad harvest is the reason that the villagers are sick and hungry, but his arrival home is heralded by news of the king’s death and Malachy swears to take charge and help his people. But all is not as it seems and a stranger to the village, warns the new king that a dark force is the cause of their ills and only Malachy has to key to rid the kingdom of it forever.

Witchville airs in the Us May 22nd 2010 on SyFy.

Pearry Teo (Gene Generation) filmed Witchville in China throughout 2009 and now the film has been announced as part of the SyFy Channel schedule. The show release May 22nd and the film, unsurprisingly, involves witches. Surprisingly, the film also involves matricide, possessed hyenas, and "a rogue band of thieves" (Witch). Dust off your spellbook and get ready to cast some magic of your own as Teo's latest shows on the little screen in just a couple months.

The synopsis for Witchville:

"Summoned back to Draeganoth, upon the death of his father, King Malachy discovers

that Witches are responsible for the blight and disease that has destroyed his Kingdom. Accompanied by his knights Erik and Jason, and, reluctantly, by self-proclaimed Witch-hunter Heinrich Kramer, Malachy sets off in search of the evil ones. Overcoming obstacles such as a rogue band of thieves, Witches disguised as his palace guard and red-eyed monster hyenas,...

And we, the biggest of the big genre nerds, couldn't be happier. Many thought the channel jumped the shark with the change from Sci-Fi to the SyFy network but execs at the newly branded SyFy channel want us to know otherwise...

This past weekend gave us Dinoshark (review here), the trailer for the Syfy bound Dinocroc vs. Supergator just went live, and we're all chomping at the bit for Sharktopus; but what else does Syfy have in store for viewers? Glad you asked. A new slate of Saturday night creature features has been announced, and I can tell you about a few others, too.

First up, let's just quote from Syfy's own press announcement (note that we've previously reported on a few of these):

Syfy announced its slate of original movies for the 2010-2011 season, including the promised "Sharktopus."

"Riverworld," based on the classic sci fi novels by Philip Jose Farmer, is a four-hour movie event that stars "Battlestar Galactica's" Tahmoh Penikett and "Smallville's" Laura Vandervoort.

The story centers on the greater part of humanity that lived on Earth suddenly finding themselves resurrected on a terraformed planet known as Riverworld. Among these people are war correspondent Matt Ellman (Penikett) and his fiancee (Vandervoort), both of whom had been killed and now find themselves alive and kicking, although separated. Matt enlists the help of Mark Twain (Mark Deklin) and a 13th-century female samurai warrior Tomoe (Jeananne Goossen).

Another four-hour movie event, "The Phantom," premieres in June and reimagines the classic comic strip. Ryan Carnes stars as Chris Walker/The Phantom, along with the legendary Isabella Rossellini as the villainous Lithia.

I’ve been a fan of director Pearry Reginald Teo ever since I saw his first feature film The Gene Generation in 2007, he followed that up with last years Necromentia - a dark and twisted horror flick that recalls the best of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser, that in my opinion even out does Barker (for my review of that film, click here).

Back in September I managed to track down Teo for an interview on the set of his next film Witchville, which was shooting in China. At the time Teo revealed that the film was a fantasy/medieval film starring Luke Goss (Blade 2, Hellboy 2), Ed Speelers (Eragon), Andrew Pleavin (300, Blood: The Last Vampire), Myanna Buring (The Descent, Doomsday) and Sarah Douglas (Superman 1, 2), well now thanks to Teo and the Luke Goss forum we have the official synopsis and the first image from the film which is due to air...

Quite a while ago, we brought you the first details and images from Pearry Reginald Teo's dark fantasy film Witchville. Directed for release on SyFy (via: Rhi) he filmed it entirely in Yixian, China (perhaps why there's not a lot of info out there as yet).

However, we just got our hands on the first poster art for the project and even though we're dying for footage, we thought we'd share it with you all. We're not all big fantasy fans around these parts, but we love Teo's work and know he'll be bringing something unique to the project.

We've been sitting on this for a while now, but since the cat is ever so slowly climbing out of the bag on Pearry Reginald Teo's top secret Witchville projct, we feel inclined to start sharing some of what little info is out there right now.

First off, Witchville is indeed the fantasy project that Teo was filming in China back in August. We've tracked down a detailed synopsis for you, as well as two pretty random images that were snapped of Luke Goss on a monitor and Sarah Douglas on set in full eagle headdress. Having grown up watching Douglas in V, Conan the Destroyer and Superman, I think it's pretty apropos casting on Teo's part.
