The French box office rose 10.1% in September compared to the same month in 2023, with 9.86 million tickets sold (€71m based on an average ticket price of €7.20) according to estimates from the Cnc.
The rise was driven by Warner Bros’ Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, a slew of Cannes releases and a robust performance from Francis Ford Coppla’s Megalopolis.
However, the month was 11.3% down on the pre-pandemic 2017-2019 average – and September 2023 had been particularly weak, posting just 8.8 million admissions (€63.2m).
Nevertheless, the overall picture remained upbeat. Admissions for the first nine months of the year reached 127.68 million (€920m), down 4.6% year-on-year after a slow start.

Welcome to this review of 2023’s All Out pay-per-view, which once again emanated from Chicago and in particular the Now Arena. And we all know Chicago crowds can appreciate a good pay-per-view and this was a good pay-per-view! The pay-per-view kicked off with the usual Zero Hour, which saw The Acclaimed beat The Iron Savages; Hologram Dustin Rhodes & Sammy Guevara defeat The Premier Athletes; The Bang Bang Gang beat The Dark Order; and Undisputed Kingdom steal the win in a three-way trios match. With that out the way, let’s see what went down on the rest of the show:
Match #1: Mjf def. Daniel Garcia The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:
Danny Garcia ambushed Mjf as Mjf entered the ring. Garcia was out for blood! Mjf finally stopped Garcia with a neck breaker. Mjf drilled Danny with a Ddt. Garcia regained some momentum after landing a lariat. Garcia...

BFI has revealed the full programme for BFI London Film Festival and here are some of the highlights.
It’s that time of the year again! BFI London Film Festival is almost upon us (ar at least Londoners) and BFI has revealed the full programme today. Among the titles, you’ll find the usual suspects. The London Film Festival is usually a smorgasbord of big titles that have had world premieres at other festivals, but it’s also a great chance to see other films.
We already knew Steve McQueen’s Blitz will open the festival while Morgan Neville’s Pharrell Williams Lego biopic will close it and that the new restoration of Watership Down would screen at the festival too. We won’t list the entire programme here, but let’s go through some highlights.

Sexual Awakening, Asylum Seekers, Alpine Tourism, Sparrow in the Chimney: 7 Swiss Films at Locarno77
The Locarno Film Festival, taking place in the picturesque town in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, always shines a light on arthouse voices, whether new or established. And it showcases Swiss films worth audiences’ attention.
That will be the case again during Locarno77, taking place Aug. 7-17, soon after Switzerland also took center stage at the 2024 Cannes Film Market where the Alpine nation was the country of honor.
Among the Swiss fare featured at Locarno this year are such Cannes hits as Laetitia Dosch’s Dog on Trial, and Swiss animator Claude Barras’ Savages, which are screening in the Piazza Grande lineup along with the world premiere of Swiss director Simon Jaquemet’s Electric Child, the international premiere of U.S.-Swiss filmmaker Freddy Macdonald’s Sew Torn and the Swiss premiere of Swiss-Peruvian filmmaker Klaudia Reynicke’s Reinas.

“Soap opera” is a term that conjures cliché images. In hindsight it’s a rather sexist phrase, like the studio-system category of “women’s pictures.” Soap operas have always dealt, at times in depth, with women’s experiences. When the phrase came into vogue, in the 1960s, soap operas were what housewives watched on network television in the afternoon (I’d watch my mother get absorbed into them). One of the many ways that they were unfairly sneered at is that the culture gave no credibility to the fact that soap operas were a serial form, which allowed them to slip into the nuances of a dramatic situation. Sure, they featured broad acting and a certain mannequin-model handsomeness and beauty, yet they gripped people — mostly women — because there was something vital and alive in them.

The 1986 war drama "Platoon" was Oliver Stone's fourth film as a director, but it proved to be his breakout in the public consciousness. Before 1986, Stone helmed two horror movies and a biopic of war photographer Richard Boyle ("Salvador"), but "Platoon" put him on the map. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, and won four, including Best Picture and Best Director. Stone immediately emerged as an enfent terrible, ready to interrogate and criticize previously romanticized American institutions. He also became wildly ambitious, seemingly possessing the temerity to assume his films would change the way the public thinks. In some cases, he was right.
Stone wore his politics on his sleeve, and often spoke about how much he hated the American right wing. Two of his films are deeply critical biopics of Republican presidents, and several of his more recent documentaries analyze politicians in power. He has turned his lens on Vladimir Putin,...

In live-action filmmaking, a continuity error may be very annoying, but is usually straightforward to fix — simply reshoot the scene again. In the painstakingly slow world of stop-motion animation, where seconds of footage can take months to shoot, it can be something of a headache. So when Claude Barras realized that that he’d filmed several segments of his new film, “Savages,” with his lead character, the teen girl Keria, not carrying the rucksack she’d had on earlier in the story, he had a problem.
In the end, and following a lengthy brainstorming session, the addition of a large farting monkey proved to be the perfect solution.
“We decided that the monkey was going to steal the bag and give it back to her,” Barras explains. And while the loud accompanying fart may not appear entirely necessary, it also served a purpose. “We wanted to introduce a bit of humor,...

Eight years after My Life as a Zucchini premiered in Directors’ Fortnight en route to winning two Césars (and nabbing one Oscar nomination), Swiss director Claude Barras returns to Cannes with Savages, an emotionally resonant stop-motion fable that looks at rampant deforestation on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia.
A tight 87 minutes, Savages wastes no time tossing us directly into the action as pre-treen Kéria and her palm-oil-extractor father witness his employer’s murder of an orangutan. Despite this killing occurring off-screen, it is very distressing. The father-daughter duo act quickly to hide the lone survivor, a baby orangutan, in their bag. With this harrowing opening, Savages relays that the death and destruction at the center of its narrative will not be sugar-coated for children.

Are we on the verge of a Livelaissance? Four years after her last live-action movie role, Blake Lively is returning to the big screen this year with "It Ends With Us." The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's best-selling toxic relationship novel made waves this past week with the arrival of its trailer, which even came fitted with an appropriately bleary-eyed tune by Lively's buddy Taylor Swift. It's also a reminder of just how well Livelites (which is what I'm calling Lively fans until I come up with a better name) were eating in the 2010s.

Films about the ecological stakes of contemporary life often center the results of unfettered human consumption. By showing the abuses suffered by the environment, they function as both an urgent warning and a desperate plea. Claude Barras takes a different route in Savages (Sauvages), his incisive and edifying animated feature about an 11-year-old girl trying to protect her land and people from encroaching deforestation.
Premiering at Cannes, Savages focuses on elemental beauty and the dignity of community-driven preservation. It is the latest film from the Swiss director whose last film My Life as a Zucchini premiered at Cannes in 2016 and went on to critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination. As in that movie, Barras does not condescend to or patronize his youngest audience members. Savages, written by Barras and Catherine Paillé in collaboration with Morgan Navarro and Nancy Huston, is uncompromising in its messaging, deceptively spare in its instruction and absolutely gorgeous to look at.

The best part of “Savages” is its opening scene, which says less about the overall quality of Claude Barras’ sophomore feature and more about the strength of the vignette that establishes the stop-motion movie’s world. Against atmospheric music, the quote “The world does not belong to us. We borrow it from our children” flashes on screen, followed by images of a lushly rendered clay forest, brimming with life and energy. An adorable baby orangutan is briefly threatened by a small but deadly snake, before being rescued and cared for by his protective mother. Atop a tree, the mother gently breastfeeds her young son, in an idyllic image that is quickly disrupted by the sound of chainsaws, and abruptly, the tree falls to the ground, revealing a construction site filled with lumber and a factory spewing pollution into the air. The title “Savages” comes on screen against this image, and...

The entrance to the Palais in Cannes was closed briefly Saturday afternoon after a bomb scare due to a “suspicious” item.
The Cannes press office confirmed that there was a suspicious package found on the street but not inside the Palais.

Writer-director S. Craig Zahler (“Bone Tomahawk”) is set to reunite with his “Dragged Across Concrete” and “Brawl in Cell Block 99” star Vince Vaughn and Oscar winner Adrien Brody (“The Pianist”) for upcoming crime thriller “The Bookie & the Bruiser.”
Anton will introduce the film to international distributors at the upcoming Marche du Film in Cannes. UTA Independent Film Group and Range Media Partners arranged the financing and will be representing the North American distribution rights.
Set in 1959 New York, “The Bookie & the Bruiser” follows a pensive, Jewish fellow named Rivner and an oversized Italian-American tough named Boscolo from the Lower East Side, both of whom served overseas during WWII and returned changed men who no longer fit inside the lives they’d left behind. Uninterested in taking orders from bosses or playing by the rules of polite society, the two friends partner up as a bookmaker and an enforcer and...

They were the box-office titans behind sumptuous period masterpieces. Yet underneath, reveals a new warts-and-all film, they were skint, stressed, prone to blood-curdling bust-ups – and ping-ponging between lovers
If you were asked to guess which prestigious film-making duo had spent their career scratching around desperately for cash, trying to wriggle out of paying their cast and crew, ping-ponging between lovers, and having such blood-curdling bust-ups that their neighbours called the police, it might be some time before “Merchant Ivory” sprang to mind. But a new warts-and-all documentary about the Indian producer Ismail Merchant and the US director James Ivory makes it clear that the simmering passions in their films, such as the Em Forster trilogy of A Room With a View, Maurice and Howards End, were nothing compared to the scalding, volatile ones behind the camera.

The community of Helldivers 2 is very active and enthusiastic about the game. In the last couple of days, a very strange behavior by the dev team was shown on the different social media sites of the game. Leaving this behind, Arrowhead Game Studios has heard the fans complain about making some real changes to very specific things.
In a Discord message, the studio said they will work on some enemy spawn points so they don’t all spawn in the same place and will adjust the lives of these creatures, so they are not so impossible to kill.

Helldivers 2 keeps going very strong; the game has more than 300,000 concurrent players every day on Steam. Players are waiting for new weapons and vehicles that will be coming soon to the game.

Helldivers 2 is currently one of the most successful games of the year, with more than 1 million units sold in just four days. This game created a very great community that followed the title every step of the way. But currently, there are some developers that are not getting along very well with the community.
Thanks to several Reddit posts, some players show how the devs are engaging with the community, which is not very friendly or open to dialog. Helldivers 2 fans are not very happy with the behavior of the dev team.

One of the main reasons for the success of Helldivers 2 is the incredible community that was created around the game. Many players are very happy in this community, sharing memes and tips about this title that they are playing so much.

Helldivers 2 is still going strong, with almost 300,000 concurrent players every day on Steam. The game was developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and is the first title to ever launch on PC and PS5 at the same time. Sony was on point to launch this game with this particular strategy.
Helldivers 2 sold more than 1 million copies in the first four days on PC. But it is not all fun and giggles; some developers of the game are not being patient enough with the players, who will always complain. There was a little discussion over on Reddit where one developer talked about the lack of skill of a Reddit user.
The developers of Helldivers 2 have some complicated communication issues Helldivers 2 has some savage devs.
One of the best things that Helldivers 2 has is a community that is very united and is always eager to see some more action; they are not toxic at all.

Aside from the story or dazzling animation, music is often what we take away the most from Walt Disney Animation films. In this case, we're focusing on the music accompanied by words, not just the compositional score. The songs are frequently the heart and soul of the movie, bringing to life the characters' emotions and motivations and moving the plot forward through lively melodies and lyrics.
Music also establishes a particular style and atmosphere that is reinforced by the visual aesthetic. It's difficult to imagine the idiosyncratic humor of"Hercules" without the muses' Gospel anthems, or "Lilo & Stitch" without Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu's breezy vocals that immediately transport you to the Hawaiian setting.
The songs are either part of the diegetic story, meaning they are sung and heard by the characters, or a non-diegetic part of the soundtrack, outside the world of the narrative and overlaying the on-screen action. But...

Director Gavin Hood's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" was designed to usher in a shiny new era for Fox's "X-Men" films. After the studio's original mutant trilogy came to an ignominious end in 2006 with "X-Men: The Last Stand" (a film that saw alleged sexual harasser Brett Ratner replace alleged sexual predator Bryan Singer at the helm), Fox decided to soft reboot the franchise by making a prequel film about Hugh Jackman's Man With the Adamantium Claws. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" even teed up potential spinoffs by introducing Ryan Reynolds as a pre-Deadpool Wade Wilson and Taylor Kitsch as the Ragin' Cajun himself, the smooth-talking, card-chucking thief Remy LeBeau, better known as Gambit.
Pulling what we'd now call a "Black Adam," Hood's prequel did indeed change the hierarchy of Fox's X-Men Universe ... just not in the way it intended. The film's negative critical response and middling box office turnout led to...

Christopher Storer is no slouch when it comes to orchestrating kitchen chaos, having created the hit Hulu comedy-drama “The Bear.” Now, he’ll turn his camera on “The Winter of Frankie Machine” and trade trades the tense world of short-order cooking for a mob story about a hitman who is lured out of retirement to set up a meeting between waring crime families only to turn into a target himself.
It’s a mean streets saga that previously attracted attention from the likes of Martin Scorsese, who was set to make it at Paramount Pictures with Robert De Niro, only to abandon it in favor of “The Irishman”; as well as Michael Mann and William Friedkin.

Most viewers went starry-eyed for “John Wick: Chapter 4” when it was released earlier this year. But Oliver Stone isn’t most viewers.
Speaking to Variety before receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Transilvania Film Festival, the two-time Best Director Oscar winner unloaded on the Keanu Reeves blockbuster, calling the film “disgusting beyond belief.”
“I saw ‘John Wick 4’ on the plane. Talk about volume. I think the film is disgusting beyond belief. Disgusting. I don’t know what people are thinking,” Stone said of the feature, which grossed more than $432 million worldwide after its release in March. “Maybe I was watching ‘G.I. Joe’ when I was a kid. But [John Wick] kills, what, three, four hundred people in the fucking movie. And as a combat veteran, I gotta tell you, not one of them is believable. I realize it’s a movie, but it’s become a video game more than a movie.

Audiences in Las Vegas for CinemaCon Monday night received their first look at Aaron Taylor-Johnson in character as Sony’s newest supervillain, Kraven the Hunter. The actor appeared in a pre-taped video introducing the first footage. He described the R-rated film as a Marvel movie heavily grounded in the real world.
Sony has kept the details of the film under wraps up until now, short of emphasizing the film “will bring us on the epic journey that leads Sergei Kravinoff to become one of Marvel’s most iconic villains.” The movie will also include Ariana DeBose, Russell Crowe, Fred Hechinger, Christopher Abbott and Alessandro Nivola.
The footage began in a rural countryside where a handful of apparent mercenaries are confronted and hack-and-slashed to death (lots of blood) by Kraven. Russell Crowe, as the dad, provides the “what you are and what you’ll be” narration, noting that he and his son are both predators.

Artificial intelligence is slowly permeating the music world, and the prospects are perilous. Over the past year, songs have been released emulating the voices of Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and pop icons. Still, it feels like the most sparks are flying within hip-hop, where AI enthusiasts are involved in full-fledged digital projects. A viral Drake and the Weeknd AI cover titled “Heart on My Sleeve” amassed 8.5 million views over the weekend before being taken down this week.

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which once again this week features a mere Five matches (music to my ears!) Anyway, on with the review…
Match #1: Juice Robinson def. Leon Ruffin
My Thoughts: This is Easily the best match Juice Robinson has had in Aew so far. Leon Ruffin was a great opponent and a brilliant foil for Robinson, who needed the win to build his rep in the company, especially considering his antics on Aew’s main show(s) last week.
My Score: 3.5 out of 5 Match #2: Kiera Hogan def. Leila Grey
My Thoughts: An interesting match-up, with a former baddie taking on a current baddie in what could be a new feud in Aew, one that would allow the Jade Cargill hype-train to continue but allow for “camp” to take loses whilst building up possible opponents to dethrone Cargill.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5 Match #3: The Iron Savages def.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has joined Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Emma Corrin and Willem Dafoe in Focus Features’ Nosferatu, written and directed by Robert Eggers (The Northman).
Production has begun in Prague on the film, in which Skarsgård is set to play the titular vampire character in the reboot of the 1922 classic horror pic by German director F. W. Murnau.
Eggers’ Nosferatu will retell the Gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.
Jeff Robinov, who originally developed Eggers’ remake at his Studio 8 banner, will produce along with John Graham, Eggers, Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus. Earlier remakes of the Dracula tale loosely based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel include Werner Herzog’s 1979 pic Nosferatu the Vampyre.

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which this week features thirteen(!) matches which -like last week – immediately fills me with dread… Anyway, on with the review.
Match #1: Matt Sydal def. Slim J
My Thoughts: So we’re getting Matt Sydal back with Top Flight And adding Ar Fox to the mix as well? That would certainly seem the case after the end of this match. I hope this “feud” with the Trustbusters doesn’t drag out too long. Mainly because Trustbusters are a waste of time Imho. Still, you have to appreciate how good this match was!
My Score: 3 out of 5 Match #2: Julia Hart def. Devlyn Macabre
My Thoughts: Evil Julia Hart does bad things… In a squash match once again., which will come as no surprise to anyone – especially given the House of Black’s dominance in Aew.
My Score: 1 out of 5 Match #3: The Workhorsemen def.

Prior to “The Accidental Getaway Driver,” which won best director at Sundance, Benssalah starred opposite Daniel Craig in the James Bond film “No Time to Die.”
Speaking to Variety, Benssalah said he was introduced to UTA during a trip to Los Angeles where he was presenting “Athena” as part of the American French Film Festival (previously Colcoa) in November.

ABC‘s newest drama series Will Trent revolves around a controversial Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent who isn’t too popular among other law enforcement officers. But the detective that Will Trent clashes with the most is Michael Ormewood, played by Jake McLaughlin.
Jake McLaughlin as Michael Ormewood | ABC/Kim Simms Jake McLaughlin plays Detective Michael Ormewood in ‘Will Trent’ on ABC
The Will Trent series premiere makes it clear that the audience isn’t supposed to like Jake McLaughlin’s Ormewood when they first meet him. He is brash, stubborn, ignorant, and abrasive. Ormewood takes advantage of his power as a detective with the Atlanta Police Department and regularly threatens and intimidates suspects and witnesses.
During the pilot, Ormewood doesn’t hold his hatred for Will back. As fans came to find out, Will previously worked on a case that outed numerous crooked cops, and many other officers dislike him for “betraying their own.
