For about a decade, Leonardo DiCaprio was attached to produce a big screen reboot of the classic genre property The Twilight Zone through his company Appian Way. Multiple drafts of the script were written and Joseph Kosinski was set to direct the film… but it never made it into production. The Twilight Zone got a small screen reboot from producer Jordan Peele and his company Monkeypaw Productions instead. But DiCaprio isn’t leaving the Twilight Zone behind entirely, as IndieWire reports that he is now producing a documentary about the show’s creator, Rod Serling!
Appian Way is teaming up with Goodlight, Grub Street Films, and Verdi Productions to make this documentary happen. DiCaprio is producing alongside Chad A. Verdi, Jennifer Davisson, Phillip Watson, Taylor Digilio, Blake J. Harris, Michelle Verdi, Chad Verdi Jr., Paul Luba, and Jonah Tulis. Leonardo DiCaprio has just crossed over into…the Twilight Zone — and the life of its creator, Rod Serling.
IndieWire can reveal exclusively that DiCaprio’s Appian Way is set to produce an authorized biographical documentary on the life of Serling, the host, creator, narrator, writer, and political activist best known for his series “The Twilight Zone.”
The untitled film will be directed by Jonah Tulis, who previously directed “GameStop: Rise of the Players” for Neon and “Console Wars” for Legendary Pictures and Paramount+. He and the producers have received the full blessing of Serling’s daughters Jodi Serling and Anne Serling, who are executive producing the project.
The Serling documentary will explore how Serling’s writing helped change television forever. The film will look at Serling’s humble beginnings in television and how he later used his platform to affect change both on and off the screen, including his battles...

During the pandemic, a few key events were truly collective experiences as there was little else to do but observe what was happening. One of the biggest examples was the GameStop stock situation, which sent Wall Street into a frenzy and received global news coverage for weeks on end. The whole thing has now been documented in the upcoming film "Dumb Money," which hails from director Craig Gillespie ("Pam & Tommy"). It turns out, Gillespie had an intense, first-hand experience with the whole "meme stock" saga.
The filmmaker recently spoke with People about the film, which is currently in limited release before expanding wide over the next couple of weeks. During the conversation, Gillespie explained that one of his sons actually got involved in the whole GameStop stock situation after a YouTuber named Roaring Kitty and a Reddit page called WallStreetBets got a bunch of average Joes to drive the company's stock through the roof.

The future is either an incredibly exciting place where decentralized ledgers bring about change rapidly or a hellish landscape where organized groups can exploit vulnerabilities in rigged systems. Fourteen years ago, director Ondi Timoner’s We Live in Public predicted the toxic hellscape some social media platforms have become, documenting Josh Harris’ Y2K era project “Quiet.” In a doomsday-style bunker, Harris simulated a societal breakdown in 30 days that has taken Facebook nearly twenty years to achieve. The director’s latest documentary The New Americans: Gaming a Revolution applies some of the same insights as GameStop: Rise of the Players as it explores the relationship between gaming, crypto, mediated mobilizations, and the stock market.
Timoner includes a wide range of personalities to tell this story, including the experts that misread just how volatile a market can be when retail investors have the time and the money to learn how to play the game.

A lot of weird stuff has happened since the start of the pandemic, and studios are already working like clockwork to crank out film adaptations of that weirdness. In one of the most high-profile ventures, "Dumb Money" looks to tell the story of that time in 2021 when a bunch of Reddit investors broke the stock market by causing the stocks in GameStop, a barely surviving company, to skyrocket. Earlier this year, a documentary about the situation called "GameStop: Rise of the Players" became available to watch on Hulu, but this will be the first live-action retelling.
The story is based on the book "The Antisocial Network: The GameStop Short Squeeze and the Ragtag Group of Amateur Traders That Brought Wall Street to Its Knees" by Ben Mezrich. The screenplay was adapted by Rebecca Angelo & Lauren Schuker Blum, and the film will be directed by the current king of ripped-from-the-headlines adaptations,...

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.
On the movie side of things, May will welcome The Valet on May...

Industry sources confirm that the seven-screen the Landmark Theatre Embarcadero Center Cinema in San Francisco will shut down Friday. The theater’s website has no bookings beyond today, and distributors were informed earlier this week.
Although no reason for the departure has been announced, sources suggest it was the landlord’s decision to not extend the lease after non-payment of rent. Landmark did not responded to press inquiries.
Built in 1995 and completely remodeled in 2013, the theater has been a major Bay Area player in first-run specialized exhibition and one of the most critical national locations. It is currently showing “Parallel Mothers” and “Jockey” (Sony Pictures Classics), “Flee” (Neon), “A Hero” (Amazon), “Belfast” (Focus), “Gamestop: Rise of the Players” (Neon), “Red Rocket” (A24), and “The French Dispatch” (Searchlight).
It’s not the sole A-list specialized location in the city; these include AMC at the Metreon and Kabuki, Cinemark’s Century San Francisco Centre,...

Maybe Sony knew something when they delayed “Morbius” from its planned release this weekend. Omicron might not have been as harmful as it appeared when the studio delayed the film until April 1. But the winter blast that disrupted outdoor activity in the Northeast would have reduced its hopes for a strong opening.
In its absence (and without any other wide opening), the three day total will come to only $35 million. That makes it the weakest weekend since May 21-23 last year, just before “A Quiet Place II” opened and theaters started seeing steady improvement. This is how low a number this is – the last time the lowest gross of a year for a weekend was less than twice as much was in 2014.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony) scored its likely final #1 placement with an $11 million take, down 21 percent. Though a good hold, that put it at the lower end of...
