While Venom’s nearly forty-year-long tenure in Marvel Comics began with villainy, he has gradually evolved past his initial parasitic nature into a genuine champion for life and love across the multiverse. Venom has bonded with over thirty hosts, each having taught him a lesson that helped develop the amorphous alien’s character. But there is one host that Venom admits showed him what it truly meant to be a hero.
Nearing the climax of the Venom War, the fate of the multiverse is on the line. Meridius is making his last stand alongside his zombiote army. Carnage is nearing his destiny as the King in Crimson. Spider-Man is doing what he can to mitigate the chaos of it all. Venom is trying everything to hold the Brock family together.

Eddie Brock's symbiote, Bedlam, is revealed to be connected to Red Goblin through Rascal, a symbiote with rage issues. Kang the Conqueror strikes a deal with Eddie to acquire a piece of Bedlam, hinting at his grand design involving symbiotes. The upcoming Venom War event may shed light on Kang's ultimate plans for manipulating symbiotes like Rascal in the Marvel Universe.
Many of the symbiotes in the Marvel Universe are offspring of Venom, but Kang the Conqueror has recently revealed a surprising connection between Eddie Brock's symbiote and another hero in the Marvel Universe. When a symbiote is revealed to be related to Venom, it's often not a huge surprise, but Kang still managed to shock readers when he revealed that Eddie's current Bedlam form led to the creation of the vigilante hero, Red Goblin.

Sony's Spider-Man Universe movies are set to expand dramatically with the introduction of Madame Web, Venom 3, and Kraven the Hunter. There are several powerful symbiotes from Marvel Comics that could still appear in future films, such as Hybrid, Silence, Sleeper, Red Goblin, Toxin, Bedlam, Scorn, Grendel, Anti-Venom, and Knull. These symbiotes offer unique powers and compelling storylines that could add depth and excitement to the Sony Marvel franchise.
Sony's Venom movies have already featured several of the most powerful symbiotes from Marvel Comics, but with just two movies under its belt, many are still missing. With Madame Web, Venom 3, and Kraven the Hunter joining the shared universe soon, Sony's Marvel franchise is about to expand dramatically. It's currently unknown if Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock will ever come face-to-face with a Spider-Man, but he'll surely be crossing paths with a few more symbiotes in Venom 3.

Warning: Spoilers for Venom #17The metamorphosis of Eddie Brock is still not over in Marvel Comics, as the most famous host of Venom gets killed by the fabled Soulsword only to transcend (or perhaps descend) to another plane of existence, where he will be reborn as a powerful new force, and perhaps gets his chance to oppose the nefarious plans of his future evil self, the King in Black Meridius.

Written by a Scot, adapted from an American novel, with a US director and two Brits playing Americans in the lead roles, HBO and Sky Atlantic co-production The Time Traveler’s Wife could scarcely be more transatlantic. The six-part time-travel rom-com, written by Steven Moffat based on Audrey Niffenegger’s hit 2003 book, is the story of Henry DeTamble, a Chicago librarian with a fantasy genetic condition that causes him to unexpectedly drop out and into his timeline, disappearing and reappearing in inconvenient times, places and states of undress. Played by Theo James, Henry is the titular time traveller, while his titular wife is Claire Abshire, played here by Rose Leslie (and by Rachel McAdams in the earlier movie.) Here’s where you’ll have seen James and Leslie before.

A March 1945 notice in the Los Angeles Times reported that following his return to Hollywood from a Uso camp tour, Boris Karloff was to begin work on a Rko Radio production titled Chamber of Horrors. The film was to be produced by Val Lewton, the producer who had already brought to the screen such psychological-horrors as Cat People (1942), I Walked with a Zombie (1943) and Curse of the Cat People (1944). Karloff had already appeared in a pair of Lewton’s horror-melodramas for Rko, The Body Snatcher (1945) and Isle of the Dead (1945). The actor had been enjoying his freelance status of late. Recent castings in a series of mad scientist films (1940-1942) for Columbia solidified Karloff’s reputation as cinema’s preeminent boogeyman - even in roles sans grotesque makeup appliances. So the engagement of the actor for Chamber of Horrors was properly trumpeted in a 1945 Variety notice as...

Mélanie Laurent is probably still best known to American filmgoers for her literal barn-burner of a performance in “Inglorious Basterds,” but on the global stage, she’s a filmmaking force, premiering her sixth film in ten years at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival on its way to a global debut on Amazon Prime, the streaming service’s first original French production.
“The Mad Women’s Ball,” adapted by Laurent and Christophe Deslandes from Victoria Mas’ novel, explores outdated medical practices and even the supernatural, and it’s another powerful examination of how the asylum essentially served as the witch-burning post for more “enlightened” times — a place to take care of women who didn’t know their place, all under the guise of serving the public order.

With seven titles selected for Venice VR Expanded at this year’s film festival, Taiwan has once again demonstrated its potential as a global leader in virtual reality content production. But this time, the tech hub in Asia has more to offer: it aims higher than just flaunting its technological advancement and the quality of locally produced works. It wants to elevate itself as an international player that collaborates with creative forces from around the world.
Of the seven titles, five featured in competition and two in out-of-competition, four are co-productions with talent from other countries. Among the five titles in competition that are backed by Taiwan Creative Content Agency (Taicca), three are international co-productions. The entries for this year’s VR Expanded has set a record for the independent agency promoting the island’s creative and content industries established under the Executive Yuan and the Ministry of Culture.

All evidence suggests that Mark Robson was producer Val Lewton’s “go to” director. Or, at the very least, for his celebrated series of psychological horror and mystery films released by Rko Radio Pictures 1943-1946. Of the six thrillers produced, Robson would helm no fewer than four (The Seventh Victim (1943), Ghost Ship (1943), Isle of the Dead (1945) and Bedlam (1946). The latter two are perhaps the best remembered of the four as both would feature free-agent boogeyman Boris Karloff in a starring role. Though the first of the Lewton horrors, The Cat People (1942, directed by Jacques Tourneur) is likely the best celebrated of the six films overall, I’ve always held a special fondness for Isle of the Dead. Now, revisiting the film with this stunning Blu ray transfer, I’m as impressed as ever with Robson’s claustrophobic direction, the thoughtful...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday released its official entries for 2021 Oscars in the categories of Documentary Feature, Animated Feature and International Films. The takeaway: As expected, the eligible Documentary Feature lineup shatters the record for the most ever.
A total of 238 features are eligible for consideration in the Doc Feature category, breaking the previous record of 170 set in 2017. Last year, by contrast, 159 feature documentaries qualified. The Academy relaxed eligibility rules in light of Covid-19, so that any film that could make a claim of an intended theatrical release was deemed eligible. Earning awards from film festivals was an alternative way to qualify.
For the International Feature race, Lesotho, Sudan and Suriname are first-time entrants among the 93 eligible titles, the same total as last year. Earlier this year, the Academy’s Board of Governors boosted the number of films eligible for the shortlist from 10 to 15. Under the new rules,...

The Oscars Best Documentary Feature race, which set a new record for entries in December when it passed the previous record of 170, has now left all previous years in the dust with 240 eligible films.
An additional 25 documentary features were placed in the members-only online screening room devoted to the category on Saturday, in what the Academy told voters would be “the final batch” of this year’s entries. It was the last of seven groups of documentaries that qualified and were placed into the screening room: 25 in July, 12 in August, 16 in September, 33 in October, 36 in November, a huge group of 93 in December and now 25 in January.
Academy rules put in place because of the Covid-19 pandemic made it easier than usual for documentaries to qualify for the Oscars this year, which opened the door for a field that obliterated the previous record, which was set in 2017. Films could qualify simply...

The Academy has added 93 more films to the members-only screening room devoted to entries in the Best Documentary Feature category, bringing the total number of eligible contenders to a record-shattering 215.
The previous record for entries was 170 in 2017. And this year’s crop of nonfiction films is expected to pass that number by an even bigger margin — at least 50 — once a final, smaller group of films is added to the screening room in January.
New eligibility rules that were passed in the wake of the Covid-19 theater closings made it easier for documentaries to qualify this year by allowing them to do so by playing at film festivals, even virtual ones, and by easing requirements for theatrical runs. In an email to members detailing the new additions, the Academy said, “The Documentary Branch Executive Committee felt it was important to be inclusive and supportive of documentary filmmakers in this unprecedented and challenging year.

If you were to look at the members-only screening room where films in contention for the Academy Award for Best Picture stream for voters, you might think that documentaries are going to do very well in the Oscars top category this year.
As of Dec. 7, there were 104 films in the Academy Screening Room for the Best Picture category, 26 of which were documentaries. That’s a full 25% of the field, which seems to suggest that nonfiction filmmakers and the companies that release them are optimistic that Oscar voters will recognize docs when they vote this year. After all, it costs $12,500 to put a film in that screening room — and all 26 docs that paid the cost to be there are also in the separate screening room available to the Academy’s Documentary Branch. Spots in that screening room are free for any film that qualifies in the Best Documentary Feature category.

The Academy dropped another 33 feature films into the online screening room for members of its Documentary Branch on Oct. 30, giving the Oscars doc race its biggest influx of new films to date. The branch now has 86 films to consider, with two or three more batches of films (and potentially more than 50 additional contenders) likely to be added to the field by early January.
Coming the same week that the Critics Choice Documentary Awards announced its nominees and the International Documentary Association’s Ida Documentary Awards revealed the 30-film shortlist from which it will make its final choices, the Academy move kicked the Oscar doc race into another gear in a year that promises to be highly competitive.

Before Disney ended up purchasing Fox and acquiring all of their most marketable assets, it appeared as though X-Force would add a new dimension onto the long-running X-Men franchise. Having spent years stuck in development hell, The Cabin in the Woods‘ Drew Goddard was attached to write and direct a spinoff that would place the focus on Josh Brolin’s instant fan favorite Cable.
Of course, X-Force had already been introduced into the big screen mythology at that point, although the team’s involvement in Deadpool 2 was played entirely for laughs. Given the amount of recognizable talent that had been assembled for the lineup, it was very much in keeping with the irreverent nature of the Merc with a Mouth that they were all killed off in the space of a single scene.

Even though every single one of them was played for laughs, Deadpool 2 contained so many cameos from various superheroes and A-list actors that it put the Marvel Cinematic Universe to shame.
As well as the fantastic moment where James McAvoy and his entire X-Men team show up without Deadpool even realizing, Alan Tudyk and Matt Damon also appear buried under heavy makeup as two rednecks that Cable encounters early in his journey. Despite Fox building towards their own X-Force movie at the time Deadpool 2 was released, the Merc with a Mouth still took the concept and turned it upside down by bringing in some recognizable faces to play the team and then killing them off before they could even start their first mission.

Dr. Ken Rosenberg became a psychiatrist because of Merle, his late older sister who suffered from schizophrenia. But did the documentarian and Cornell Weill Medical College doctor set out to tell Merle’s story in Philadelphia when he began shooting Bedlam, his new documentary on the troubled American mental-health system, nearly eight years ago?
“No, never!” Rosenberg told me during a phone interview on Monday. “Years into the project, that was not my intention.” Rosenberg had done some film work in the 1990s, but until Bedlam premiered Monday night on PBS’ Independent Lens,...

It took a global pandemic, but Courteney Cox has finally joined the millions who binge-watch “Friends.”
Having extra time in an era of “safer at home” and “shelter in place” was an added factor in the “why now” aspect for Cox, as she revealed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on March 25. But the former star of that NBC sitcom noted she was finally watching her way through her own seminal work because so many others love the show.
In fact, the series has become a go-to source of comfort for audience members who grew up with the original broadcast run, as well as those who found it in syndication or streaming.
On a normal day many television fans find themselves putting on their favorite television shows while they cook or get ready for bed as a way of self-soothing and coming down from the stresses of their workday and the global news cycle.

Hollywood takes a hard look at the mundane horrors of mental asylums, and Olivia de Havilland scores another career high with her portrayal of a housewife experiencing a nervous breakdown. Some people found the show scary and a few felt it was tasteless, but Ms. de Havilland’s performance is riveting, 71 years later. Anatole Litvak’s intense direction makes good use of expressionistic visual devices, without veering into dippy Salvador Dalí psycho-surrealism.

In the second live podcast recording of the New Hollywood Podcast at the Sundance Film Festival, we dive deep into Lgbtq content from the documentary angle with Where’s My Roy Cohn? director Matt Tyrnauer and Bedlam subject Patrisse Cullors, who is also the co-founder of Black Lives Matter.
During the panel titled “Preserving the Past for the Future: Documenting Untold Histories,” Tyrnauer and Cullors were on the same page when it came to discussing relevant socio-political issues affecting marginalized communities. Exclusive: “The way we treat mentally ill in this country is insane.” That’s how one psychiatrist starkly describes the state of affairs in America’s broken mental health system, which is put under the microscope in Bedlam, a documentary directed by psychiatrist-filmmaker Kenneth Rosenberg. The pic is having its world premiere later this month at the Sundance Film Festival.
Check out the trailer that offers the first look at the docu, which bows in Park City in the fest’s U.S. Documentary Competition section. It will also air likely later this year as part of PBS’ Independent Lens series.
Rosenberg, fueled by his own sister’s battles with mental illness, captures footage shot over a five-year period at a Los Angeles County psych ER, revealing the sometimes horrific reality of a deinstitutionalized system in which emergency rooms often provide the only refuge for the severely mentally ill who need care.

A new clip has been released for the upcoming animated series Young Justice: Outsiders. It features Nightwing and Oracle infiltrating a secret metahuman lab run by the mysterious Bedlam.
I've been such a huge fan of this Young Justice series and I've got high hopes for its return. So far I've liked what I've seen, especially with that five-minute long trailer that was released during Comic-Con. That definitely stirred up some excitement among the fans!
The superhero line-up also includes Static, Kid Flash, Robin, Wonder Girl, Spoiler, Blue Beetle, Thirteen, Arrowette, Arsenal and Beast Boy. Here's the synopsis:
In Young Justice: Outsiders, the teenage Super Heroes of the DC Universe come of age in an animated world of super-powers, Super-Villains and super secrets. In the highly anticipated new season, the team faces its greatest challenge yet as it takes on meta-human trafficking and the terrifying threat it creates for a...

In case you didn’t know – but judging from the alarming frequency in which we’re receiving marketing material, it really should’ve been apparent by now – Deadpool 2 completed the journey to home video today.
Along the way, the Merc with a Mouth picked up a quarter-hour of additional footage, and an audio commentary featuring Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, David Leitch and, of course, Ryan Reynolds – which Wade Wilson and company are deeming: Deadpool 2: The Super Duper $@%!#& Cut. That said, the theatrical cut really is good enough to warrant the purchase, let alone with the slew of bonus content promised on the packaging, but I digress.
As I stated earlier, throughout the last week or so, we’ve witnessed an onslaught of promotional ballyhoo – not that we’re complaining, mind you – including a new teaser that one can’t help but feel is teasing Deadpool 3. Not to mention,...
