Brian has got Sophie a role in what is to be the next "Carry on..." movie. The "Carry on..." movies are an anthology of what ended up being 31 "lowbrow" comedies made between 1958 and 1992, although there is a large gap between the last two of fourteen years. In 1964 when this show is set, there were already 10 movies in the series. They are primarily thematic send-ups of everyday life, or of popular culture of the day, such as
Carry on Cleo (1964) which was made immediately after
Cleopatra (1963), and
Carry on Emmannuelle (1978) which was made immediately after
Emmanuelle (1974). Most contain titillating sexual situations. Many of the movies have the same stable of actors including most notably
Sidney James,
Kenneth Williams,
Kenneth Connor,
Charles Hawtrey,
Joan Sims,
Hattie Jacques, and
Jim Dale. They are among the most popular and financially successful British movies ever made.
